Honestly, I don't how my first experience there this week could have been made any better. The food was amazing. The house salad with the basil vinaigrette was WOW so so good. The asparagus (ask for ranch to dip it in, secret we learned from our waitress) was cooked and seasoned perfectly and the chicken, WOW, was DELISH!!!! and oh so tender and then we threw some of the barbeque sauce on it which is on the table and it was just awesome. We will definitely go back. Oh yeah, one last thing, if you go in the bar inside, there is a barrel of peanuts. I love munching on peanuts while drinking my beer!! Slightly disappointed. I remembered this place being better than it was. I think their big thing is all about the Atmosphere. It is a super cool outdoorish venue that makes you feel like you are in South Florida. For this they get 5stars. The food is where the 3 star comes in. It has been packed every time I come in, but very easy to get a table. My advice get the famous half chicken, but skip the sides they are frozen and tasteless. The mac and cheese was from a Kraft package and the fries were frozen as were the chips and others. This is our "Go To" place, anytime we have a business lunch! SSH is just one of those places that everybody always wants to go to! But be forewarned, Get There Early! If you are not there by 11:30 for lunch during the week, good luck :-) It is the local go to "Chicken Joint" and it is delicious! This place is completely packed by 12, inside the restaurant or on the enclosed patio area. They have a private lot, which is filled to the brim as well, you will see people parking across the street and walking. It's crazy!! Seriously, I don't know where they put all these people!! It is a really down home feel with tons, and I mean tons of pictures. Its good for a friendly lunch, but don't expect to just talk business, because it can get loud - even at lunch. The menu is pretty large and you really can't go wrong with anything, my favorite is the Fried Chicken Salad with honey mustard dressing - yummo! I get the lunch portion, and I never even finish it.....I can't imagine what the dinner size would look like...... The staff are extremely friendly and always, and I mean always welcome you with a warm smile!! The only reason I give 4 stars instead of 5 is sometimes, especially if you are with a bigger table, it can take a while for the food to come out. I definitely recommend checking them out! Went to the Chicken Place! I ate at the Silver Spring House yesterday and got the chili and chicken taco salad. The chili is not Cincinnati-style chili (cause I am not a fan of that) - but its good chili and not spicy. You can get it topped with onion and cheese. The chicken taco salad was also good. Instead of shredded or pulled chicken in the salad, the Silver Spring House tops the salad with diced white meat. Normally, I get the wing appetizer and onion rings for lunch. You can't go wrong with the wings and rings (sounds like another place, hmmm). The downside - I've rarely been to this place when it wasn't busy or the parking lot jammed up. That should tell you something about the place. It's a minor inconvenience, but the food is worth it. read more

I recently went back a couple of times with some friends. I tried their chicken salad on a croissant and boy, it was out of this world delicious! It's just bursting with marvelous flavor! However, if you don't like red onion, I'd stay away from it. It was huge and priced right. We hung out at the bar with some of the regulars and they were a friendly bunch. We recently visited this restaurant with a group of around 20. By the looks of the parking lot it was packed but we got a table right away. Our server was great and did a good job. The food was good except for my wife's bowl of chili which was cold but they corrected it. The chicken was fantastic as were the wings. If you like chicken (grilled or fried), cheeseburgers, salads, wraps, saratoga chips, french fries, ranch dressing, or beer, Silver Spring House is perfect for you. Pros: the food is delicious. Whether you're getting a salad or a cheeseburger (one of my favorites in the area) or roadhouse skins, you won't be disappointed. SSH is known for its [fried] chicken, so I also recommend that, but there is a pretty extensive menu, so there are plenty of items to choose from. There is also free popcorn and peanuts, so even if the service is slower (as it can be given how crowded it usually is), there are at least snacks to hold you over. They usually have a pretty decent beer selection, too. Cons: the place is usually pretty crowded -- during lunch, happy hour, and evenings -- so be prepared to wait, have slower service, and even struggle to find a parking spot. Thankfully there is additional parking at CHCA across the street in the evenings and you can make reservations. I'm a big fan of SSH and really like their food (and especially the ranch dressing). We had the Spring House Chicken. So deliciously tender with just the right smoke and char. The sweet potato I had with it was so soft and fluffy it was almost soupy. Almost! The coleslaw was also delicious. I dipped my chicken in the bbq sauce that had a fair bite of heat to it with just the right amount of sweetness. Silver Spring House is ALWAYS packed. The first two times we attempted to dine there we couldn't find a parking spot in their rather large lot, so we nixed the idea and went somewhere else. This week we decided to avoid the lunch crowd and dine at 1:30! Voila! We got a table without a wait. I really like their huge indoor/outdoor patio. The breezy screened in patio allows guests to enjoy the summer air without worrying about cicadas landing in their food. However, there isn't much light on the patio other than the ambient light from outside, which might make the menus hard to read for some folks. Both my bf and I ordered the 1/4 chicken breast and wing lunch specials, which was accompanied with two sides. My mashed potatoes were decent and my side salad ample, but I didn't touch them once I tasted that succulent chicken. No wonder Silver Spring is known as the "The Chicken Joint." The roasted chicken meat was seasoned with a scrumptious dry rub and then roasted to perfection. I don't know that I've ever had roasted chicken that was as good. My quarter chicken breast was so full of meat, I can't imagine what a whole chicken breast would be like. Not until I was almost finished did I notice the bottle of BBQ on the table. I dabbled a little onto what was left of my chicken breast to make a zesty version of pulled chicken breast (which is also on the menu, btw). Though the chicken doesn't need extra flavor, I really enjoyed the BBQ sauce. I can't give them five stars because I wasn't wowed by the side dishes and they had advertisements in their menu (big pet peeve). But otherwise I really enjoyed my meal. So skip the sides and fill up on the chicken--that's my advice. read more

Went here for the first time this week. Had a large party of 19 during lunch time. The restaurant was packed and yet we received amazing service. The server had our group and other tables and stayed on top of everything. The food and service was top notch!! We will be going here again. We ate here on a Monday night and it was BUSY! Sat at the patio bar and watched a Reds game while we enjoyed a drink and the "beach bar" atmosphere. This place seems to have grown since the last time we visited, the patio area is huge and really has a great feel. Ordered the Haddock Special and the half BBQ Chicken dinner. Saratoga Chips and Chipotle Slaw, baked sweet potato for the sides. The chicken was so delicious and perfectly cooked: juicy and tender, very flavorful. This is the "house" food item and rightly so. The Haddock was also excellent and was cooked exactly as it should be: not overcooked with a tasty batter coating. The chipotle slaw was tangy, I'd say medium hot, so probably not for Grandma. Love this place, just be prepared to wait if you are a walk-up. Regular dining hours are always packed, even on Monday nights! But there is a reason for the high demand here, it's really good and really packs some entertainment value into the experience, too. read more

Every time I go here, I never remember what I've ordered in the past. And I've been here a handful of times. The main reason I'm fond of this place is because my coworkers have dubbed it the chicken shack. Meet at the chicken shack. It's a cool place to get lunch and linger a bit on a Friday. Free unlimited popcorn, which shouldn't be a big deal, but it is. Last time I went, I ordered the chicken salad (still remembering). I could've sworn the menu said goat cheese and almonds. But my salad came out topped with your run o' the mill shredded swiss or cheddar, whatever it was, and def no almonds. Disappointing. Also the portion was huge. Putting a fork in it caused an avalanche of leaves on all sides. Ok, I'm exaggerating, but you get the idea--it was enough for lunch, dinner, and then some. This place is like a cross between a sports bar and a convertible. They have garage door style windows that open up throughout the restaurant, allowing for a dual indoor/outdoor dining experience. I quickly realized that I had chosen a secondary entrance, as there was no one there to greet me. No big deal, I thought. Rather than go back out and walk all the way around to the ambiguously defined front of the building, I'll just seat myself. Sat there for approximately 20 minutes, before I finally had a waitress ask if I was being helped. I informed her that I was not and asked for a menu. When the menu arrived, the lamination on it was so scratched up and worn that I couldn't read the list of sides offered with an entree. I asked for another menu. Same story. I ultimately had to have the waitress recite the side choices to me. What was not obliterated were the entree prices, each $1 more than the menu posted on Yelp. So, not only have their physical menus not been updated in quite some time ... I think you see where I'm going with this. I went with the Cajun half chicken platter with red skin mashed potatoes and the black bean salad as my two sides. Initially, I was torn between the half chicken platter and the chicken black bean salad, since a few pictures of the latter posted on Yelp had my mouth watering before I ever arrived. They were roughly the same price, so when the waitress mentioned the black bean salad for a side option, my "best of both worlds" siren went off and I knew that was the wtg. While waiting for my meal, I noticed several other patrons snacking on complimentary popcorn. I hadn't been offered this freebie, so I decided to walk over to the bar and ask for some. The bartender didn't say anything. All he did was give a vague head nod towards the far end of the bar, where the popcorn machine was located. So, a help yourself establishment of the friendliest kind. Hey, at least I was starting to learn the ropes. By the time I got back to the table, it was only a matter of minutes before my meal arrived. Curiously, there were only three pieces of chicken on my plate. Now, being somewhat familiar with the anatomical makeup of poultry, I knew that most chickens are graced with two breasts, two wings, two legs and two thighs. It took me a few minutes to work out the math, but I eventually came to the conclusion that I had been shorted a wing. Then, as luck would have it, I flipped my rather large breast over and discovered the wing was still attached to it. It was a little T. Rex arm of a wing. For a moment, I imagined the breast was pointing at me, as if to say "I had you going for a while there, didn't I?" Not being the biggest fan of practical jokes, I ignored him and began tearing him him apart with my fingers. I should mention that I went with the Cajun chicken, because the only other menu option - at least that I could discern through the badly clawed plastic - was barbecue. That's not to say I don't enjoy BBQ chicken. There were simply no extra napkins on the table. Just the one my utensils came wrapped up in. Had it not taken 20 minutes for the waitress to show up in the first place, I may have considered the messier format. In hindsight, I wish I would have, because "Cajun" apparently translates to some sort of cayenne-based dry rub(?) Guessing here. It wasn't horrible, but it did have me looking for a refill on my soda a lot sooner than I normally would. So, basically you're either going to be Jonesing for mo' napkins or mo' beverage, depending on what half chicken platter you order. Choose wisely. In my case, I was actually in desperate need of both. Somewhere between the chicken and the popcorn, my hands had become greasier than the Lords of Flatbush. Fortunately, the waitress was much more attentive than I had anticipated, so it wasn't a major ordeal. My two choices in sides were both outstanding. Special thanks to whoever it was that recommended those on an earlier review. As far as the atmosphere goes, it's a very nice ... dare I say unique? ... set up. While I wasn't crazy about the chicken platter, I would definitely give this place another shot. Preferably just as a major storm begins to blow through the Montgomery area, as I'm super curious as to how they go about shutting all those windows on short notice. Like, do they race around pulling them all closed manually, or is there a secret button behind the bar somewhere that sends the whole facility into Optimus Prime mode? Either way, it seems like it would be something cool to witness first hand. Speaking of hands, I would highly recommend a roll of paper towels on each table, a la City Barbecue. Especially if you're going to be serving ... check that, having patrons serve themselves ... buttered popcorn. Further, a patron accessible beverage fountain might not be such a bad idea, either. So I'm here every weekend with my daughter. Every now and then she bails on me. I still come, sit at small front bar, and get the worst experience. Literally no one behind bar on a Sunday. I sat and waited. Clearly a friend of the owner came to the bar and owner appeared and a bartender appeared and he got a beer and I got ignored.. so bizarre. The nights I have been there the tables are full and the bar is empty. Wonder why? The bartender is a bossy old man who needs to be let go - not a fun experience. The half chicken white meat meal I ate for lunch was phenomenal. The chicken was moist and full of flavor. The Mac n cheese was cheesy and fresh, noodles were cooked perfect. The fries were your basic freezer crinkle cut fries with no seasoning. You got that and a coke for 12.99, best lunch deal around... The service by the bar tender was lacking at best and made me feel unwelcome. She told the host as in leaned over the bar and yelled at her " I only have this one bar customer, you need to fill my section" as my cup sat empty. We have lived 3 miles away for almost 4 years now. This was our first time in the restaurant. They always look busy so we've never tried. We were surprised when they seated us right away in the tent section. My enthusiasm quickly halted when the noise level in the tent was so high I had to yell at my husband to talk. A girl came to take our order for drinks after sitting at least 5 minutes. She never returned. Another girl came by and got our drinks and order. Maybe I should have read the description but I was expecting fried chicken, after all, they are a "Chicken Joint". The chicken came out roasted, which was good, but not browned enough. I wanted to try the chipotle slaw since I really don't like sweet slaw. It tasted like hard carrots and that was it. There were more carrots, thickly cut, than there were cabbage. The salad was okay. I don't like tomatoes or cucumbers and they would not let me put anything else on it. So I had lettuce and dressing. The first girl came back after we had already ordered and tried to take our order again. Very disorganized, too loud, and the food was okay, but not what I expected it to be. The food was fantastic but the reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is the portions weren't as large as I anticipated and service was ok. It was a slow Monday night and it took the hostess a while to seat me and even though the food came out quick the waiter took too long between checking on me. I've haven't been to the Silver Spring House in years. And today I remembered why. The prices for food have become absolutely ridiculous. This is standard bar food in a bar atmosphere. Which is fine but not at these prices. I wouldn't mind hanging out at the bar and having a few beers but I don't think I'll be back for lunch/dinner unless I'm with a group that really wants to dine here. I've had the onion rings, chicken tenders, chicken salad plate, chicken salad sandwich, chipotle slaw, bbq shredded chicken sandwich to name a few. Nothing to complain about but nothing extra special about any of these items for the menu prices. Service can be slow at times too. read more

We are fans of chicken, so since the sign said "The Chicken Joint", we thought we'd give it a try. We weren't disappointed. My husband got the quarter chicken dark meal, roasted chicken with sweet potato fries and stuffed green pepper soup. I got the Silver Springs chicken tenders meal. with plain baked potato with butter and sour cream on the side. I liked the chicken tenders, four pieces of rather big tenders. DEFINITELY enough for two people. The coating was not crispy, and had a slight flour taste. But the chicken itself was moist and flavorful. I got ranch dressing on the side, but didn't need to use it. As usual, I sampled my husband's meal. The sweet potato fries were crispy, and just sweet enough. No need for extra sweeteners (honey, brown sugar, whatever). The restaurant itself, even with MANY TV's, was on the quiet side. Which is very nice. The service was quick, which was also a pleasant surprise. The place filled up rather quickly, mostly with families that had kids. This restaurant is down the street from my dad's office so we frequently come here to meet him for lunch. The restaurant has both inside seating and "patio" seating. The patio has garage door type windows that open all the way around the restaurant. There are several fans, but it can get hot in the middle of summer. The patio also has TVs covering the walls so you can catch your favorite sporting event. There is self-serve popcorn and peanuts that guests can get to snack on. Every time we've been here the food is delicious and the service is great. The chicken is always tender and the saratoga chips with bbq sauce are especially tasty. The portions are very generous and a good value for the money. The only thing that can be an issue is parking. This is a very popular place and has a tendency to be very busy most of the time. The parking lot is not very large and there is not an adjacent lot for overflow. You will often see people making up their own parking spots during busier times. This restaurant is about a block from my office, and we affectionately call it the "chicken shack." It's a great place to grab a quick but sit down lunch, we can usually get back to the office in just about an hour. For $8 you can have anything off of their lunch menu + a drink. Their salads are really tasty, and they otherwise have a pretty wide menu. I haven't had anything disappointing there. Bonus points for the fact that when you get a drink refill they usually bring you back a little pitcher of whatever soft drink or ice tea or whatever you had so you don't have to keep asking for refills. read more
