For Providence neophytes, Fox Point is the historically Portuguese neighborhood that you approach as you travel south on Hope St. I call Fox Point land of colonial houses, petty theft and cheap macaroons. The latter is thanks to Silver Star (a Portuguese bakery) where you can buy a bag of macaroons for about two dollars. Hooray for the melting pot. read more

Came here for dessert on a Saturday afternoon and was pleased to see that the bakery wasn't busy and that they had a wide variety of goodies. The Portuguese egg tarts and the carrot cake caught my eye and both were priced very well. We took our order to go and everything was pretty good. The egg tart crust wasn't as flaky as I would have liked but I enjoyed the filling. The carrot cake was a bit too dense and I would have wanted it to be a bit more moist but the cream cheese frosting was delicious and not overwhelming. I wish I had more time in Rhode Island so I could try their other baked goods but I enjoyed the items I ate. read more

Don't trust Gary Sousa's review and photos. The photos he uploaded are not actually from this bakery. The malassada from this bakery is just a giant piece of fried dough with no custard fillings. The photo of the malassadas linked to this business is from Leonard's in Oahu, Hawaii. Gary, you should be ashamed of yourself. Also, I went there on Sunday morning and the place was dead. I was the only customer. There were plenty of baked goods/donuts available. The cashier came out to greet me and told me to ring the bell when I'm ready. The glazed donut is like any you would find in a grocery store. Nothing like the Krispy Kreme looking donuts you see linked to this business. I also tried the Portuguese egg tart. I've actually had this at many bakeries around the world. This just wasn't that great. There was a large selection of other baked goods. I can't comment on that since I didn't try them. There were plenty of free street parking around this corner bakery. Come check out this bakery if you want, but don't believe everything the reviewer Gary had to say about this establishment. read more

Very fairly priced and the best eau claire I've ever had.

There's something about walking into a small business and knowing that its been there forever... a staple of the neighborhood. Silver star is one of these gems and as a result, you get genuine and friendly service along with some excellent food choices that were made from the 'heart'. My favorites... the sweet bread... particularly on sunday when they make the minis and the coconut cup cakes. Bought two rather large baguette-type rolls and a cinnamon pretzel. Both were excellent and VERY reasonably priced. Will definitely be getting again. (I would give 5 stars if I just got those!) However, the real treat I was hoping would be great were the two pieces of carrot cake I bought. Sadly they were mediocre, at best. Very dry and lacked flavor. (But maybe I'm a carrot cake snob...?) I went early in the morning, so I was hoping they would be fresh. Anyway, I would recommend this. Can't wait to try all the other pastries at some point. There were SO MANY!! read more

Ok Portuguese bakery with the standard options. My bf enjoys the rolls for sandwiches. To me, the pastries are ok and while the pastel de nata are decent here, they're nothing like the gold standard pastéis de Belém from Antiga Confeitaria de Belém which I had the pleasure of eating twice a day for the wonderful months that I lived and worked less than a 5 minute walk away (seriously, about 1.5 euro for pastel de nata and um bica pure bliss, which I indulged in minimum twice and sometimes three times a day. heaven! but I digress). Overall, Silver Star is a no frills and inexpensive bakery option if you're in the mood for Portuguese baked goods. read more

I don't get it, why all the rave reviews? The pastries are bland, over-processed, too sweet and low quality. Everything has way too much sugar and I suspect cheap vegetable shortening instead of butter. It's grocery store quality bakery, tastes just like the manufactured stuff at Stop-and-Shop. Not worth the calories. Keep driving up Hope street to 7 Stars where they have top quality stuff. Haven't tried the bread, probably won't. read more

The pasteis de nata are delicious and not very expensive ($1.25 each or $12/dozen). Glad I went for the full dozen! Unfortunately I can't say the same for the assorted cookies. I bought two types (jam thumbprint-like ones and the rainbow seven layer cookies) and both were terrible. So awful and dry, and didn't taste like they were made fresh in house. They were so dry they tasted like they'd been left on the counter for three days before they got to me. Not that great tasting either, and expensive compared to the pasteis de nata. Cookies are $6.50/dozen or $11/pound, but the minimum for a the per pound price is a pound. read more

Stopped here this morning for breakfast. Upon walking in, we were not expecting the delicious sights and smells awaiting us. Fresh pastries galore along with coffee ground straight out of the machine. Ordered a canolie, egg custard, milk custard, elephant ears, croissant, egg & cheese croissant, two rainbow cookies. Everything could not be matched by any other bakery we have tried in the area. Will be returning to try from the vast selection of pastries available. Customer service is extremely nice and genuine; it can be seen how much time and care goes into the baking and customer satisfaction. Came both days we were staying in Providence. Raspberry twists and almond bar were awesome, elephant ear was alright. We also grabbed a loaf of sweet roll to take with us, it was fantastic. Pricing was very fair, wonderful smells were free. I'm jealous of the lucky dawgs that live nearby. read more

I got a slice of tiramisu, and a macaroon. These are two of my favorite desserts, and I couldn't have been more disappointed with them. They were both the hardest and worst version of each that I have ever had. They were probably both close to a week old. I'm not usually one to write a review, but this was bad enough to make me feel like I had to. I'm in the area frequently, and I will never go back. I love the sweet bread. The sweet bread gets five stars. However, I'm an early bird. I tend to be up by 5.30 and ready for breakfast. I live a short walk from Silver Star, so sometimes I'll get there around 5.45/6. First few times this was not a problem. However, the last three times I've gone over in vain. They don't have sweet bread. They don't even have regular bread (?!). All that's there at 6 is sugary pastries. I know I shouldn't complain, BUT why not open the store an hour later in that case? Or a few hours later? The last time, a different woman was (wo)manning the store, and she was super unfriendly when I asked her when they would have rolls/ bread. She told me by 8am, i.e. three hours after opening. The woman who's usually there is always great. read more

After watching Anthony Bourdain on Portuguese food in his early espiode, I always wanted to go to Providence, RI to check out their community and I finally did last weekend when we want to Cape Cod. This was one of my stop that I wanted to go to and even the local people say this is the bakery to go to for their famous sweet beard. So off we want and I was soo excited to go inside and started ordering a small sweet bread which was big as my head and that was the small. I also got the eggs custard, a pastry w/meat inside and a fried dough w.sugar and cinnamon on it. We asked the girl who work there how does sweet bread taste like and we asked her if it taste like Hawaiian bread and she say alot of people think so. Anyway got in the car, and i ate everything up beside the sweet bread because it was way too much food plus the bread was dense as hell. The food taste ok but nothing special. If i had to do it again, i wouldn't buy anything from the store. Sorry I would pass on this place. I later found out why people think Hawaiian sweet bread and Portuguese sweet beard taste so close because a lot of Portugese want to Providence but a group of them want to Hawaii and then start making it over there. Personally I prefer the Hawaii one because it is smaller and more airy. read more

Simple shop with Portuguese pastries and bread. I picked up 6 large rolls for $2 and once I realized the bargain, I rattled off some of the pastry items as well. The bread was delicious (perfect for sausage and peppers) and the pastries were good but I believe their bread is the true star. read more

Tried this bakery on a whim after having an enjoyable lunch next door. The bakery looks inviting, and the counter staff was friendly. However, after pondering the various choices, I decided on A chocolate Napoleon. The slices at the front of the case looked fresh and appealing, however what was in the box wasn't. The chocolate coating was multicolored, with the back edge of the slice oxidized and almost white. The layers of pudding were dry, the puff pastry was not flaky or crispy. Honestly seems like this piece placed in the box was old and tired. The counter person asked if it was out first time, but based on this experience, It will be our last time. read more

Hit or miss kind of business. If I had ordered the cannoli and the whipped cream chocolate pie the first time even a one star would have been a stretch. The three stars owe to the saving graces that are the egg tart and the tiramisu (I don't like tiramisu but I found it decent). After experiencing mild success with those two pastries, I felt adventurous and mustered up some courage to purchase a chocolate pie with whipped cream and a plain cannoli against my good instinct, which I fully paid the price for later on. Oh, boy.... They tasted exactly as they looked. Quite the worst decision I have ever made in my dessert loving journey my whole entire life. The cannoli was shocking, no other words to describe my initial reaction but with straight-up disgust and shock. The papery shell exterior, soft playdough like filling lend to the overall stale and blandness of the cannoli. It's been standing on the shelf for at least a good whole week for sure. It took me instantly back to my childhood memories of the the "Western" pastries section at an all you can eat Chinese buffet for $7.50. And those tasted better than the cannoli in my memory. The chocolate cream pie was no better. I was compelled to wash the remaining flavors out of my mouth ASAP so I jogged to like no udder and got their ice cream. My husband and I have been going to this bakery for years now. The family who owns it is very nice and they have the best prices and pastries!! Our favorites are the wine biscuits and the sweet bread - which cannot be beaten in Providence. They also recently started selling very reasonably priced gourmet cheese.
