I'm happy we were brought here by the RI Food Fights sandwich showdown last month. The Caçoila (pulled pork sandwich) was solid. Their list price was like, $4.50? Ridiculously cheap and can easily make a meal here with a sandwich, some of their other hot options and a sweet treat. The service was friendly and answered all the questions we had. This is definitely a local-heavy spot hidden in plain sight on tauton ave. Few tables inside of the you wanted to enjoy your food and pastry there. Would be a good spot to meet up with a friend for a quick in and out chat or on the way to your next destination. The pb chocolate brownie was OK, texture was fantastic but wasn't heavy on flavor in terms of chocolate or peanut butter. Would definitely try their other pastry. There were a lot of really great looking things in that case. The sandwich was very tasty. I would have preferred some more peppers on it and some melted cheese would have been a chefs kiss, however for the price, no complaints out of me. read more

Every time we have the craving for Portuguese natas, we come here. They are priced very cheaply and they taste like heaven. They usually have at least 4-6 different flavors that you can choose from. But they also have sandwiches, soups, breads, pastries, etc. A really good bakery for those who want something that tastes very close to home made, even though is a full serve bakery. Taunton Ave Bakery is a local Portuguese bakery located in East Providence. I visited for lunch with my husband and the first impression was a good one! The bakery case was full of tasty looking treats, and the flow of customers was constant. The atmosphere was really positive and welcoming with workers and customers speaking Portuguese in an exchange of friendly conversation. It had that close-knit community feel. Upon the recommendation of the employee who helped us, we both ordered their Cacoila sandwich, which was described as a Portuguese pulled pork sandwich. It was quickly prepared and handed to us as a dine-in order. This sandwich was around $5 and made for a great easy lunch option. It wasn't loaded, but there was still enough meat to leave me feeling satisfied. I also had some red peppers added to it and those were scrumptious. They were a little vinegary and added a nice complement of flavor and texture. I do wish there were more of those! The pork itself was very tasty and seasoned well, but it was a bit dry, and the bun was fresh and fluffy. We also treated ourselves to a peanut butter brownie to share, and this was also good. It had a nice fudgy texture and was very moist. However, the cocoa and peanut butter flavors were not as pronounced as I had hoped. They were rather muted. But, it was still enjoyable and I liked the crunchy peanut bits on top. I'm glad we stumbled across this spot and I'd like to stop by again! read more

Came to try the Bifana sandwich as part of RI Food Fights Best Sandwich competition, but they were sold out and offered us the chourico & pepper sandwich instead. Let me just say that it was amazing! The chourico was flavorful without being overly spicy, and the peppers & onions were perfect. Best of all was the fresh Portuguese roll, which soaked up the sauce from the chourico and was so delicious. While we were there, we definitely needed to pick up some sweets. Taunton Ave Bakery's pastel de nata (custard tarts) are the best I've ever had, so we picked up a few to take home. Also got some sweet rice pudding topped with cinnamon and that is to die for as well. Love this bakery so much! read more

I forgot to review! This busy bakery is a must go to. The lilt of Portuguese is very present, English is switched back and forth depending on the customer. The staff are efficient, friendly and organized. The space is inviting and casual, with a few places for seating. As for the bakery products, be still my heart. Pastil Da Nata was my goal, I ordered what I needed plus one, smart move they would not have made it home un molested if I hadn't gotten that extra! The sweet bread is so fresh you need to portion it out in the most effective and wonderful way, rip pieces off, skip butter, this is sheer heaven all by itself. Well, what a wonderful experience. I have been waiting in line so long that it went past the time of the coupon by a couple of minutes, but the girls still gave me my sandwich off the sandwich, passport coupon because it was like five after. It was super busy in there, even though those three people in the front waiting on customers getting the sandwiches getting What is getting Pastry baked goods, etc. But they were all friendly calm right on top of things making suggestions explaining what things were if you didn't know what they were. It was kind of quiet. I think they might've had a couple of tables, but it was just for Eden side, but I don't. I'm not positive only because the fact that I was trying to get waited on and trying to pay attention what was in the case of the variety of things. I still did get other bakes. I got a pineapple roll with powdered sugar, which is like a jelly roll with pineapple in it I also got peanut butter, a brownie for my honey, and a homemade thing of bread pudding, which was very reasonable. It was under two dollars of serving, which was absolutely out of this world. The prices were very, very inexpensive the quality of food is excellent like I said the interior of the store just makes you wanna buy more cause everything else look good and so fresh Looking forward to going there again sometime and getting something else. Stopped in for #RIFoodFights #BestSandwichRI. I grabbed an apple stick and cacoila sandwich with red peppers. I have had quite a few cacoila sandwiches in my day, but this one took me by surprise... The woman behind the counter recommended the pulled pork over the pork loin, and I am happy she did. I was looking for a quick grab on my way east. I will return to try the loin next visit. The sandwich was spicy, moist, sweet peppers added a nice touch, not sloppy, and a fresh roll... can't ask door more on this simple delight. I liked the atmosphere of this quaint bakery with a few warm food options, elegant pastries, and coffee... I was searching for a sweet snack around Providence and came across Taunton Avenue Bakery. Upon arrival, there were already about six people inside the store, so we did have to wait outside for a bit until they cleared out (there is a max # of people allowed inside at once). There were all sorts of goodies to choose from. I decided to try the chocolate eclair, palmier, raspberry twist, and cinnamon twist. To be completely honest, the pastries were extremely lackluster. The cream inside of the eclair was tasty, however, the chocolate exterior tasted artificial; like that sickly sweet chocolate flavor. The palmier and twists were probably some of the driest pastries I've ever eaten. I'm talking so dry I couldn't even get past a few bites. I want to give Taunton Avenue Bakery the benefit of the doubt. Maybe I just ordered the wrong things at the wrong time! I expected to try their Pasteis de Nata, but they ran out of the original flavor by the time I visited. I don't know what the hype is about this place but, after buying some cupcakes, cream cheese brownies, and other pastries I have to say that it's definitely not worth it. I love this place and I really like their location since they moved. There's much more parking here around and in back so it's much more convenient. Service is always excellent here and they're big products of just terrific. I'm always impressed that they have young people working here but they are bilingual and that is so helpful to a lot of the customers that I see around me. What a treat to visit this Portuguese bakery, right down the street from my office! In my neck of the woods, I'm surrounded by great Italian bakeries, so this was a nice change of pace. I stopped in to get some treats for a meeting at work. The cases were chock full of amazing looking pastries and other sweets. And I cannot even describe the breads! I decided on a dozen mixed Portuguese egg and custard tarts (Queijada and pastel de Nata). They were delicious and as fresh as can be. They also do wedding cakes - or any other occasion. I love this bakery. Some of the best pastries I've ever had, Portuguese or not. They also have some limited lunch options like sandwiches and soup. There's a small cafe counter that will make you an espresso or latte and one sole high top table. To say the least, it's small, but it definitely makes up for it in taste. I'd probably give it five stars if it weren't for the fact that I feel I always get better service when I speak Portuguese instead of English. It shouldn't matter, honestly. Also, in my last visit, I asked for a cinnamon stick and a cinnamon custard cup. The girl gave me a raspberry stick (I hate raspberry) and a traditional custard cup. I didn't go back since I didn't think it was worth the trip. I gave away the stick, which my friend gladly enjoyed. I find it hit or miss. I do have to say that I don't buy many of the Portuguese breads, sandwiches and pastries and maybe they are much better than the other items. Example, delish mini cheese cake cups, different taste which I like. Great red velvet cookies. Good turnovers. Downside, had soggy cannoli, slightly stale cupcake and pastries, whipped cream a little to fake for my liking. Good prices. Staff is fine. Like some reviews have said, can be indifferent, never found anyone rude, not at times overly helpful or patient, and sometimes very nice, customer service can be tough. None of it stops me when I'm having a craving and drive by but I don't go out of my way either. I Just stick to a few things I know I like and hope they're fresh. Such a great little bakery! Great selection of both Portuguese and other style pastries. The natas are almost as good as the ones I've had in Portugal. The cupcakes are lovely and yummy. The rolls are perfection! They also have a small selection of very good Portuguese cheeses and chourico. Last time I came I loved it. This time they were out of the fruit tarts I so dearly loved so I ordered the red velvet cake. It was moist, but I didnt like that the frosting was dyed and the cake itself tasted stale and I didn't enjoy any of it. My aunt ordered mini cheesecakes which had chocolate chips at the bottom. Had she known, she wouldn't have ordered it. But nothing is labeled so you don't know what you're getting yourself into, and nothing has a price on it. Let me tell y'all, when I moved away from Rhode Island to Philadelphia this one of the places I missed the most. The pastel de nata is to die for! Every time I come home to visit its my last stop only because I want them fresh to take back to Philadelphia with me. I've never had an issue with parking here. The space is always clean and I've never had a big issue. Only reason I deducted a star is because the staff isn't friendly at all, like not once have I come in and had a friendly encounter. The best Pastels de Nata (Custard Tarts) I've had--and I've had them in the Azores, Canada, and all over the U.S. The custard is perfect. The shell is buttery and crisp. Amazing. The orange cake is an Azorean delicacy. Amazing texture and subtle orange flavor. Don't underestimate it based on its humble appearance. Meat pies (Azorean style) are crisp and fresh.
