I live a few blocks from this place. The food is really good but..... When the posted hours are closed at 10PM, then you call to verify then it seems like you'll get served This is NOT the Case! My GF, and I arrived at 9:40 PM only to be told that they were doing take out orders only. There was a 6 top with drinks on it still, we would've been out no later than 10:20. The OPEN light sign was on only rubbing it in that we would only eat Bar food tonight. I probably will NEVER be back. Mgmt needs to honor their words. Been here a couple of times. This is a really nice neighbourhood restaurant. They have room for 30-40 people. The service is good but not overly attentive. Last time we were here I ordered the yellow curry with chicken and steamed rice. The dish was very tasty and I had it with a thai beer. Everyone at our table had a great time. Parking outside the restaurant can at times be a challenge, but otherwise a great place for Thai food and meeting friends. read more

Love the Pad See Ew and they have great lunch specials that include a salad and pot stickers. This is my go-to place for Thai food in Solana Beach. Since I moved to San Diego, I have tried Thai restaurants up and down the county's coast, in Hillcrest, Kearny Mesa, and downtown and none compare to the quality of the food at Similan. We have ordered from here twice. Food is ok, but not our favorite spot in Solana Beach. The pad woonsen is mediocre, not a ton of flavor, but still edible. The chicken satay is odd, as it's chopped into pieces, and not served on a skewer in the traditional fashion. Peanut sauce has room for improvement too. The coconut shrimp were done nicely, and the pad see ew was the best of the dishes we ordered. So glad I finally found a good thai place close by without having to drive all the way to Mira Mesa. We go the Pad Thai, Panang Curry,. Green Curry and Pad see ew. The pad thai was so good, it was sweet, sour and spicy! Fantastic flavors. The green curry had a good kick of spicy and the Panang was hot but mild because of the coconut milk. The Pad See Ew was a bit bland but overall a really great place that delivers as well from what I saw. Loved it and we will be back! read more

Okayyyy, best panang curry I've ever had. And I LOVE that it's vegan and that they have other vegan options as well. (Nothing I hate more than a sneaky fish or oyster sauce.) The curry was so rich and flavorful. Just amazing. Couldn't stop doing the happy food dance. The Thai spring rolls were also too notch! So psyched to find vegan Thai options and will definitely come back to try the rest of the options. (Also worth mentioning that we came here on a Sunday night and for over half of our dinner, we were the only customers in the entire restaurant. Holy cow! Have you ever eaten something so good you just want to keep rolling it around in your mouth savoring it and never swallowing? Well today was my first experience with that. It was weird but... I digress. I always order pad see ew and papaya salad when I go to a Thai restaurant so these items are my benchmark test. The papaya salad was perfection. Pro tip: ditch the dried shrimp and get it with grilled shrimp instead. The light charring on the shrimp adds a smokey sensation that contrasts nicely with the spice and tartness of the salad. The beef pad see ew was executed just as well. It had that guilty greasy goodness without being overbearing. The veggies retained some of their fresh natural crunch and the beef was of good quality (not to mention there was 50/50 split of meat to noodle!!) Bottom line: Best. Thai food. Ever. Hands down. #1 Service is nothing to write home about. They could have spit in my face and I'd still go back because the food is just that good. read more

It's taken twice as long as we've been quoted and the staff has no care or concern when we show up only to find out the order hasn't even been started. This has happened twice. Food good but poor service. My family and I came in for dinner and waiting politely to be sat down. When we sat down, we spent 20min waiting for them to acknowledge us - after some time they just dropped water on our table as if we were bothering them. I asked for tea - tea was dropped at the head of the table rather than in front of me. My knife was just dropped on the table rather than on the napkin that was opened. Every staff member that walked past other tables checked in to see how their food turned out and if they needed anything. When they walked past our table, they never made eye contact. Very strange and rude. And no, we did not do anything wrong to offend their staff. I guess it sucks to be the only African American family in a restaurant trying to enjoy a nice meal. read more

Came here twice and it doesn't disappoint. I usually get the Penang tofu curry which is really good. I love the vibe in the place. It's clean, comfortable, and relaxing. It's not loud or too busy where there are too many people. The staff is friendly and will answer any questions you have on the menu. Their side salads are my favorite, they are fresh and the dressing is tasty! I will be frequenting this place since it's near my work. I have eaten at Similan tons of times. But last night wehad a horrible experience that prompted this one star review. I won't be going back and will be eating at Bankock Bay from now on. The restraunt was relatively empty and a family of 8 showed up. First two parents and two kids. The parents were loud and obnoxious, the kids were dirty, had snot running down their faces, were let run around the restraunt screaming. - out of control. Then two more families joined them with equally obnoxious screaming entitled kids, one was in hysterics as the mother walked up to the table. The entire scene was out of some trailer trash horror movie. The parents were entirely oblivious to their inappropriate and ridiculous behavior. And their negative impact on every other person in the place. The restraunt did nothing. Yes, I get that this was a large party and they are customers. But there are simply minimal standards any business must maintain. And letting one low-life group impinge on everyone else is simply not acceptable. However up to this point I actually felt sorry for the staff. But when I finally had enough and we got up and asked for our food to go, the waitress gave us attitude. Like we were inconveniencing her. Another group moved to a table as far away from the disruptive brats as possible and another simply left without ordering. I should have done the same thing and gone down the street to Bankock Bay. But that felt unfair. When the waitress brought up my food, she shoved it at me without even so much as a sorry. I asked her if she even care that our evening was ruined and she angrily said "they are customers" and I said so were we, but no longer. It's one thing to have a disgusting, poorly mannered bunch of losers to deal with, but it's another to do nothing and then take it out on the customers who aren't willing to put up with it. If this place wants to allow this kind of unacceptable behavior and have their restraunt turned into an incubus of snotting primates, then they should rename it Simian and install some monkey bars. If I wanted a Chuck-E-Cheese experience I would have gone there and expected screaming kids. But that wasn't ok here. Eat at Bankock Bay. read more

This is our first time at Similan Thai and we're super glad we come here. The foods are above average and the service is attentive. We order papaya salad- good balance of spiciness, saltiness and tartness. Tom kha gai soup is very good. Soft shell crab pad Thai is flavorful (and they don't skimp on the crab either, with 4 large halves). Crying tiger dish (rare steak, papaya salad, and sticky rice) is another good dish - I especially like the sauce with the flavor of roasted rice powder). We're so full, we couldn't force ourselves to eat the sticky rice mango, even though mango is in season right now. We will be back ... soon!! Very happy with the foods. read more

Great little Thai place. We've definitely found our favorite Thai place in SD. It looked kinda small but once inside the decor and attention to detail was fabulous. The menu is pretty extensive and the food is delicious. Good sized portions and the flavor was mind blowing. Authentic and delightful. They tend to get busy as the night progresses so definitely make a reservation. They are kid friendly as the got ikea plates and spoons etc for the kiddos to eat with which made kiddos super excited and that made us happy parents. We will definitely be back. The pick up order is extremely poor. The host told me I put 630 for an online order when it says on the printed receipt 530. They told me I will get a store credit after waiting in the parking lot for 40 minutes. I don't want a store credit I want a refund. This place lies about when food will be ready and I wasted hours of my Mother's Day waiting for an order they could not produce in time. I'm really discouraged about the customer service and the food ordered, I feel taken advantage of. If the food is going to take 2 hours tell me it will take 2 hours.
