Visited Simp's while on travel for work based on the Yelp rating, I was not expecting much judging incorrectly on the local area, Simp's is a great local place I had the Hoover Duck it was delicious. Very cool, two story restaurant in Huntsville. I'm glad we found this since there isn't much in the area. I was hesitant of ordering duck, as it can be really dry if not cooked probably, but I am so glad I did. It was the best duck I ever had. The prepared it medium rare for me and was so juicy, tender and full of flavor. The cocktails and wine were tasty and service was good. We will certainly go back next time we are in town! read more

We were so disappointed, food was awful. Had to send food back. I ordered Pontchartrain. Fish was over cooked and over salted. Shrimp were very small and over cooked as well. Sent it back as it was inedible. Ordered another dish Crystal, shrimp again were over cooked and drowning in sauce. A drizzle would of been sufficient. So much sauce the rice was hard to find. Service was excellent, felt bad for her she tried to make it right. Not her fault for the way the food came out. We tipped her well. Cocktails were good. I never mind paying for a good meal, but this was over priced and not good. If you have any difficulty with stairs you will have to sit in the bar area, as we did due to disability. read more

Charming restaurant in Decatur. Our server was nice enough, but I wouldn't describe him as friendly. The menu is full of meat and seafood; however there is one vegetarian option - mushroom ravioli with veggies. The veggie of the day was broccoli so I was expecting mushroom ravioli with broccoli. Boy was I wrong. My mushroom ravioli was topped with broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, asparagus, and carrots. Even the carnivores at my table commented on how fresh and delicious my plate looked. The mushroom ravioli was just ok, but I would go back for those veggies!! I also would recommend the house salad dressing for your salad. read more

I am in Decatur on business and asked around about the best restaurants in town. This one and The RailYard were recommended; I should have given the latter my business. At S. McGhee's, the wedge salad was half the size of a picture on Yelp. It arrive probably the paltry size of a quarter of a head of lettuce. One you cut the lettuce, the pieces sat swimming in the dressing. The walnuts were chewy; they should've been toasted. I ordered the lamb chops for my meal. Needless to say, I left hungry and don't have that big of an appetite. (I likely consume what a typical female does.) There were four lamb chops that easily should've been an appetizer. They were a laughable size for a meal size portion. So after a $36 bill for the meager salad and chops + 20% tip for the lovely waitress, I went back to my hotel and snacked to satiate my hunger. If the quality and portion size were a high end quality, I'd have no problem paying more. I imagine the locals know better than I how to order because I doubt they leave as disappointed as I did. read more

Decided to host my husbands 70th birthday party at SIMP'S...it was the best decision I have made in a long time. There were 11 guests and the food could not have been better! Everyone loved their meals (thanks to our waitress, Whitney) the wine was perfect and the setting was all we could have asked for! We have always had wonderful food at this restaurant and it has turned into our favorite dining place in Decatur. Wonderful ambiance, great wine list but the food...simply amazing!!! read more

My wife and I have been going to Simp McGhee's for the past 23 years for anniversaries and the like. We have never had a bad meal or bad service. We have had great steaks and seafood on numerous occasions. Most recently, last week, my wife had the Shrimp Ridgeway and I had the Sunnybrook Surf and Turf. We both thought the food was great and enjoyed our meals and our service. We moved downstairs after dinner for some drinks at the bar. The live music enhanced the already great atmosphere. We enjoy the local non-chain restaurants and establishments when we find a good one. read more

I have lived in Huntsville my entire life and I had never been to downtown Decatur. Sad, I know, Bank Street is truly lovely and I will most certainly venture there again. For this trip, my wanderings had purpose and so I found myself in front of Simp McGhee's. Opened in 1986 and so-named after the famous river boat Captain, Simp McGhee's stands at the northwest corner of historic Bank Street. The menu was posted in the window and I was instantly drawn in. Duck, smoked salmon, ponchartrain..... Yum. A nice gentleman opened the door for us and I couldn't help but notice the chef's smock and apron. None other than Head Chef Dean Moore was welcoming us in! The restaurant was dimly lit, only a few lights over the bar and the sunlight streaming in from the front windows. Diners can choose to eat upstairs, a more formal affair, with white linen table clothes and wee candles on the tables or downstairs. The dark and quiet early afternoon bar scene appealed to me so downstairs it was. A few other patrons were on hand, but only a few. We were seated at the front windows, in a perfectly quiet corner where we could watch the approaching storm. Our waitress approached and greeted us with menus. Upon closer inspection, the menu was simply exceptional. Everything sounded wonderful. We started with the mushroom caps, stuffed with seafood dressing, bacon and Jack cheese. Then we decided on the fresh ponchartrain and the char-roasted duck. Still beaming over the menu, our salads arrived and thus ended the fairy tale. Wilted, brown baby spinach and iceberg lettuce and a few cherry tomatoes. We were off to a bad start. Then the mushrooms came and I was instantly reminded of the difference between fiction and reality. The seafood stuffing was stale at best and the bacon.... Well, there is really no way to sugar coat this. The bacon was raw. Now I am not a professional chef, but really, raw bacon? Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't there a rule somewhere about not eating raw pork? Needless to say, that dish got a trip back to the kitchen. After asking for and receiving some bread, the entrees arrived. The duck looked luscious and tender and yum. The trio of apples, baby spinach and sesame glaze was inspiring and a perfect complement to the rich depth of the duck. A bright spot indeed! As it would turn out, the only bright spot to be had. The ponchartrain before me was heavy and dry, not the light tender fillet I had anticipated. The shrimp and crab were utterly flavorless. I nibbled on the broccoli while gazing longingly at the duck. Lesson learned, I guess. Our waitress came to gather up the lot and presented us with the bill and yes, the disappointment continued. The mushrooms remained on the bill. So, for a mere sixty eight dollars we had some duck. Hum...... Overall, the aesthetics weren't bad, perhaps in need of a good dusting, but overall pleasing. The service was fair, not awesome, but better than the food. I have to say, I will venture across the river again, downtown Decatur still has treats in store for me, but my experience with the river boat captain will be my last. for Simp McGhees. read more

I don't normally venture out of Huntsville to eat but I had a friend from out of town suggest we meet at Simp McGhee's. I have to admit I have some preconceived notions as far as Decatur goes but I met my friend at the Restaurant and was highly impressed. This place has a wonderful menu of Cajun inspired dishes, I sampled some of my friends food as well. I have always hated that in Huntsville the choices are so limited when it comes to cajun food. This restaurant is incredible, great food, neat historic atmosphere complete with a tin press ceiling and our server McKenzie was a sweetheart. I will definitely go back and I suggest that any and all of my foodie friends check this place out. I just wish it were in Huntsville but on the bright side I have found a good reason to drive to Decatur just to visit this restaurant again. read more

Party of 6 met for birthday dinner, nice setting upstairs. Out of the 6 orders 2 were wrong, service was very poor, empty wine glasses for 30 minutes, no refill of water, bread arrived half way through our meal. Server had very bad attitude and didn't try to make our experience pleasant. Food was good when it finally arrived, only time we got good service was when he brought the bill and want to be paid immediately. Simp mcGhees is a wonderful gem of a restaurant located on historic Bank street. The atmosphere, friendly staff and consistently good food and drink keeps us coming back over and over, despite the fact we've seen an influx of restaurants in the area in the last couple of years. We only eat at a few of the local restaurants because the quality of the food and atmosphere is lacking at many of them. We LOVE simps and we love the owner! :) read more
