Took my brother for his birthday. We ordered glass of wine and seafood stuffed mushroom caps appetizer which came quickly and were delicious! But our main course took a very long time and my scallops arrived cold and were not very good. Server was not attentive. When in north AL I plan to pay cash as most places charge 3.5-4% for cards, though this was not posted on the menu or anywhere in the restaurant. When check arrived, there was an automatic 3.7% "convenience fee" already added to the bill. I inquired; it was "for using your credit card". "But I am paying cash" and my bill was reprinted. I don't appreciate unwarranted charges that I am not even warned about being slipped into my bill and in spite of a delicious appetizer, the dinner portion and service were subpar, so I do not recommend Simp McGhee's. read more

Simp's is my go-to recommendation, and my favorite, in Decatur. I never go without getting the side salad with the house dressing (a feta ranch) and a cup of she-crab soup. Other favorites are the filet (always tasty and cooked perfectly), fried green beans, and Dean's Delight (pasta in a creamy cajun sauce topped with a small filet and shrimp). It can be a bit loud downstairs but we much prefer sitting there than upstairs. Nice outdoor seating. read more

Simp McGhee's was amazing. Let's start off with the parking, it was plentiful. The service was great. Everyone was extremely nice. I ordered the wings as an app. They were very good and the sauce was amazing. I ordered the dean's delight as my entree. The steak was cooked perfectly and exactly how I asked(Medium rare). The pasta was a little overdone but that was no biggie compared to all of the flavor in the dish. Overall, it was great and highly recommend it. It was hot but we had ceiling fans but the management didn't know how to get them on. The food was really good. Little confused but sweet.

We waited over 30 minutes to get our drink (beer) order, then another hour to get our food order in. I told the waitress to not worry about my food. I ended up leaving, passed my buddy $5.00 for my beer and the food took about 1 hour to even get he said. Once their food arrived, it was not only wrong, but cold. This place is horrible, under staffed, and I highly recommend never even going there. McDonald's is better. read more

When we checked in at our hotel I asked the front desk where they recommended for supper. Their response was a resounding Simp McGhee's. I thought this was a good sign, so we headed over. At 7PM on a Saturday night there was ample street parking within a reasonable distance at no cost. When we arrived we told the hostess that there were 4 of us. She said that there were no tables downstairs and she didnt know about upstairs. After she confirmed that there weren't any tables available, we got put on the waitlist and was quoted 20 minutes. We chose to wait outside, since there isnt really room to do so inside. It appears that normally they would also have patrons dine outside, but it had recently rained and that wasnt happening at this time. While waiting there was a family that came out and she made comments about how bad it was. Hearing this it made me question her about further details, which she readily provided. I was informed that her food was way overcooked, as was every other persons at their table. She did mention that usually the food is really good, but not tonight. Another patron that I saw leaving I asked about their experience and they told me that they never actually got their food until they spoke to the manager and then it had been so long that they just took the food to go. Neither of these were reassuring. When the hostess came outside and told us that she had a table we headed inside. This table shouldnt have even existed. it was so close to the other tables that there was no way for the servers to get around. We tried to position adults and children to give the most room possible, but found out within moments that it was going to be a problem. The hostess sat another table behind ours, and the people couldnt even get to their chairs. We had to stand up to allow them to get past. Meanwhile on the other side of our table there were 7-10 people that were standing incredibly close to the table while waiting on one of their own. I was uncomfortable with how closely everyone was jammed into the space and didnt want to eat a meal that way. After waiting for 15+ minutes for a waitress to come by and even get our drink order I decided to leave. Maybe tonight was an off night, but I will never know. Not going to be in the area again as far as I know, and even if I am I won't try this place again. I can't comment on the food, as none of the tables that i saw even had any. read more

We went here for our joint birthdays in May. Sat at the bar to await our table. The estimated wait time was 25 minutes. We were seated in ten minutes! We sat by the front window downstairs. The food was delicious and the service was attentive. Everything was good. We had the green beans as an appetizer; Winston's catch for entree. Everything was impeccable. Total bill was $101 but was worth every penny and I will definitely do this again. This was only my 2nd time eating here. The 1 st time was 20 years ago and it was good then. Traveling through the area and stumble upon this place. This place covers all your needs. Upstairs is fine dining atmosphere and downstairs is upscale bar atmosphere suitable for any type of occasion. Service was outstanding and food was excellent! A little pricey but the food quality, service, and atmosphere was well worth it. Our group had the Filet Mignon $35, Prime Rib $34, and Wings $10 with a wedge salad $5. Protein was prepared perfectly and the wings were excellent. We'll be back when ever we're in the area again. read more

We really enjoyed this restaurant. Service was slow, but we were in no hurry, so that didn't bother us. We were seated outside and were enjoying the evening. Drinks from the bar took a long time (each round). Food took a long time too. Right before delivering our food, we were informed that the special that had been ordered by one of us, was not longer available (surf and turf and the surf, crab cake, was what they were out of). The turf was delivered well done when it was ordered medium rare, the potatoes that were served were cold and the asparagus that was supposed to come with the meal was not served at all. They recooked the steak and it was perfect and delivered with the asparagus. This took too long also and the other person in the party was nearly finished with their food. The taste of all food, including cold mashed potatoes) was delicious. Surprised no food was comp'd nor did a manager on duty ever come out. I assume this was just an off night, and would go back. Ate dinner here during a busIness trip to the area. This unassuming restaurant looks like a historic bar, but with an upscale flare to the menu and Creole/Cajun influence. Prices are in the $$ neighborhood, with entrees ranging from about $22-30+. The dinner menu leans toward seafood, with a selection of different preparations for the catch of the day plus dishes featuring shrimp and crab. We split the stuffed mushrooms to start (6 to an order) and they were delicious! I especially liked the dipping sauce. All of the entrees come with a sIde salad, and the house dressing is worth a try. It's ranch-ish with a buttermilk base, herbs and feta. For dinner, I had the Crystal shrimp--basically shrImp and grits. Spicy, savory, delicious! The sauce was rich but complex and the perfect to foil to the pile of shrimp. The grits were creamy and perfectly cooked, with bits of andouille sausage throughout. I'm kind of obsessed with shrimp and grits, and these were really good. Portions are decent but not huge. I didn't quite finish my meal, but my dinner companions cleaned their plates. Even with the included salad, I would definitely think about ordering an appetizer or two if you're hungry! read more

I stopped here while passing through. I ordered the grilled salmon. I got new potatoes instead of fries. The seasoning on the salmon was strange. I order salmon almost everywhere I go. I've had it all kind of ways. This one fell flat. The new potatoes are literally boiled in water. There's no butter, no seasoning, no salt. It was sad. The place had a Louisiana feel to it so I was shocked that the food was so bland. I doubt that I'd return. They get three stars instead of two because my server, Cameron, was very nice and the hostess was very friendly when I entered. read more

A Decatur classic, the first time I ate here it was right after their ten year anniversary and they just recently celebrated their thirty fifth. This place is like stepping into a time machine to the golden age of restaurants. Great service, consistently amazing food and an owner that will check on every table. The house dressing should be bottled and sold everywhere. There are so many great items on the menu, but the Dean's Delight is my go to, named for their original chef and my mentor Dean Moore, though he may have left this world, you can still feel his presence and his love for great food and good times.
