After searching view Google Maps, this one popped up closest to us. It's located within an old brick building, and generosity the staff have by placing an entrance sign because this doorway could easily be overlooked. The interior opens up to a wide area with some seats alongside the walls, further inside there are more seats and benches. In my case, I was also looking to charge my device and I only found one spot (a bench enclosed in a small roof) that had some electrical outlets). I ordered a pastry that I don't recall the name anymore, but inside included cheese and ham. I also ordered a cup of coffee. To my surprise, the city hosts some local events and we happened to arrive when all the coffee drinks were treated by the city free of charge. The details are vague in my memory, but the time window frame is narrow and the city chooses random cafe places. Out of the many, our first coffee place in Portland happened to be the one that was free. It was a friendly surprise and a great start to the food experience to come. The coffee and the pastry arrived at the same time, soon after I paid, so I got to pick them up and take them to the table we chose to sit down and relax for a bit. The coffee was slightly sour but it mellows out after a few drinks. It didn't need a lot of milk or sugar in this case. I liked the pastry we decided to get with the coffee. I thought this was unique for its crispy and tough crust and inside it contains hot melted cheese and ham. There was a strong saltiness coming from one of these ingredients but I couldn't pinpoint which one. I would be able to eat this with a drink but on its own it might become quite salty in the mouth later. read more

The coffee is amazing and although I am grain-free and sugar-free the food offering looked amazing and She makes it in house! She also hosted a local business mixer that we crashed by accident and she comped our coffee which was an amazing way to end our Portland visit. Once we found this shop-she is the Only business in this huge building in a very quiet but visually interesting part of town. Highly recommend!!! read more

This is the cutest coffee shop I've ever been to; it's a perfect mix of comfy nautical vibes and elegant decor. Coffee itself was excellent. Drink was ready quite quickly despite the line going out the door. Cheddar apple scone was almost fluffy - after years of torturing myself with Starbucks scones, I had no idea that they could be something other than military rations with sugar. The woman who runs it makes the pastries herself everyday and puts a lot of care into the coffee and atmosphere, even remembering the regular patrons usual orders. I came here for an industry related meeting (they let us host in their "atrium" area adjacent to their cafe) and I was really surprised how great the carafe of coffee was! Came upon this coffee shop as I was venturing through downtown Portland on the hunt for some Voodoo Donuts. The first thing I noticed was the cute blue sign outside and knew I wanted to step inside to check out the coffee shop. I ordered the Honey Lavender Iced Latte and it was phenomenal. The latte had a subtle hint of lavender and perfect amount of sweetness from the honey. It was definitely a great drink to help me cool down from the heat, especially after a few hours of bike riding. Might be my very favorite coffee shop bar none. Daughter and I arrived fairly early on a Monday morning and the line was fairly long. Worth the wait! I had an amazing specialty coffee drink made with home made syrup. We ordered three pastries to share for just the two of us. All three were great! The marionberry muffin was a standout! As we were leaving (and the line had died down) we spoke with the woman manning the counter and making all the drinks. She and her husband are the owners. She takes the morning shift because he gets up in the middle of the night and makes all the pastries fresh for day. He is a talented baker! If I lived in Portland it would be hard to keep me away from here! read more

Visited this establishment today and the server was insanely rude to myself and other customers I was with. We were on our way upstairs to set up and the person was rude to us about not immediately buying product. Which would normally be reasonable if it weren't for the fact we explained that we were going to come back down to order our beverages after we set our books down (this for a study session.) She behaved unprofessionally in front of other customers despite the fact that we calmly explained our intentions--that we were absolutely interested in purchasing a drink. She did calm down AFTER I set my armful of books down on the counter and placed my order and carried the mug upstairs (with my books in my arms) as proof we absolutely were patrons with the intention to purchase and consume goods. Absolutely will not return and I do not advise others to go. read more

Cozy. Warm. Inviting. Awesome. Some of the nicest folks in all of Portland run this awesome spot. Arrive early for gooey pastries and delicious hot cocoa + lattes with house-made syrup. They also have baguette sandwiches and soup for lunch... until they run out, which they tend to do frequently because they're so damn good. Guess I'll just have a cinnamon roll for lunch. Things could be worse, believe me :-) PS Check out the upstairs 'loft' for a nice spot to do some writing or meet a friend. It is a small shop but the line moves fast. This is my go to spot when I have someone in town who wants to meet and catch up since there is always seating in the common area. You can also catch a peek into the shanghai tunnels below this building. There are a lot of alternatives in this neighborhood and I've tried them all, this is the one to beat. Love this quaint, local business, just a couple of blocks from Worldmark, where I was staying. Super friendly staff of one! Pastries were always warm, right out of the overnight, and different that what can be found at other shops. The stuffed bagel was amazing, and the apple cheese scone was definitely a taste of the PNW. Tried the drip coffee and salted caramel latte, which was the right bakance and not overly sweet. Loved reading at this shop when we could still go to cafes. Simple Local is open for shortened hours now (some time until noon?) and has a great set-up. You order online and she gets your order ready, then leaves it on a table just inside the main hallway of the building where she can see it but there's plenty of distance between you and her. Super cute, just like everything about Simple Local. If you haven't been here, I recommend her salted caramel late and salty chocolate chip cookies. But don't overthink it. She's using Sterling so just a simple americano is pretty baller too. Regular secret? Try on that grapefruit soda. It's ah-mazing if you have a hangover or you're just feeling low. Lauren is the shop's owner and she has one of those rarely-rewarded customer service personalities. When I had my youthful barista years, I was occasionally crunchy in the morning. Lauren is ALWAYS pleasant and real. Tip her! So she can keep offering up excellent coffee and sweets. read more

Our group of 7 (5 adults and 2 kids) stopped in after a tour of downtown yesterday. The barista that was working was charming and helpful. She helped each of us decide what we wanted and even helped to make some of their specialty hot drinks into cooler options since it was so hot outside. My salted carmel iced latte was absolutely delicious! My kids ordered the lemonade, and I was completely blown away when the barista spend the next several minute HAND SQUEEZING lemons! Really. . . I'm serious. It was fresh squeezed. She added extra sweetener for my kids, and left my husband's tart, just how he likes it. This place is by one of one the coolest little treasures I've ever seen. Everyone that walks in is treated like a well known friend. And the caramel and muffins... When I first went in, I was in love with the high-vault ceiling and simplicity of the cafe. But I found the barista off-putting. Not genuine. Snobbish. I've gone back a few more times bringing co-workers, friends, etc. and I've experienced the same weird attitude from the same barista (blonde lady). It's a shame. I'm not expecting enthusiasm but from personally working years in the service industry (cafes, bars, restaurants), attitudes like this barista makes me not want to come back to this cafe. The Americano is okay. Fortunately, Pine Street Market is opened and I can just walk there for a great cup of coffee with easy-going people. Adore this place... the physical space is breath-taking: high ceilings, big windows, exposed brick walls, original harwood floors. The coffee is even better -- from Sterling Roasters, and the barista/owner (who I found absolutely charming) knows her stuff... my drinks were prepared to perfection. Seriously, the best London Fog I've had. I live in San Francisco but fly up every month for work and I always have to stop in for a London Fog because they're that good. The owner is so sweet and warm every time I come in and remembers my order. Also, she has amazing hair styles which is irrelevant but true. She makes all of her pastries fresh, in house, every morning and you can tell. 100% I've become a regular from San Francisco.
