Latte and drip coffees for the win!
    Carlene P.

This was not bad, but not exceptional either. The coffee wasn't as smooth as I'd hoped for and the service was not especially friendly. I liked the openness of the seating - it was quite comfortable. That's about all I can say.

Technically, this review is for their brand new location in the Wells Fargo tower on 5th Ave. that just opened this week. The staff is so wonderful & we're so happy to have them in the building.

We'll worth a visit if you're in the area. I needed a space to work on the ole laptop and got a great fresh roasted cup and excellent service. All the usual concoctions you'd want. A few snacks too. Nearby are some cool furniture stores and a flea market. So good area for a stroll and some Joe.

While visiting downtown a couple weeks ago we stopped at this place and I would highly recommend their soy vanilla latte. We ordered another two drinks which I can't quite remember, but the flavor was good. I would like to try more customizations though.

Raspberry scone and soy latte (excuse the mess, I'm clumsy)

Both people working (the girl behind the counter who took my order and the barista who made my latte) were really friendly and helpful. The girl was so pleasant and upbeat with every single customer she encountered for the entire time I sat here-- over 45 minutes. I got a decaf soy latte and a raspberry scone (vs blueberry) at her recommendation. They have almond soy, oat, coconut, and regular milk options. You guys.... the decaf is actually really good!! This is so exciting. It's mellow and not strong or bitter. Also the scone I got was sooo tasty. The outer parts were crisp and it was sweet with just a bit of tartness in the raspberry. So glad I came here and angry at myself that I didn't bring cash to tip. More angry that I didn't come here sooner. Great service great coffee and great pastry!

This place is great, but they are often closed. 4/7 times I have gone there over the last two months they were closed. I won't bother to try again.

Iced Soy Latte & 12 oz black coffee

Firstly - Autumn (short brown hair w/glasses) is the coolest gal ever. She was really helpful and I was beyond impressed by her service and knowledge about coffee. I got an iced soy latte and a 12oz coffee (a smooth, yet strong tasting coffee originating from Ethiopia - I didn't need any creamer, which says something about good coffee). The small shop is located at the lobby of a hotel, so it wasn't the greatest feel if you're looking for a place to have a conversation. Needless to say, it's a Saturday morning downtown Portland and I was able to get a good cuppa coffee and find seating at the bar to do some work (wifi is available).

Water Ave Coffee is one of my favorite spots. Their coffee is phenomenal, and the brunch is a very delicious treat. The Parmesan and Herb scones + Toad and a Hole are my frequent eats. A great place for a lunch break, or a coffee to go. Never been disappointed and find myself craving their lattes frequently. Coffee beans are great to take home and brew on your own as well. Not to mention, very cute merchandise! : Toad in a hole, medium latte, duck confit.

The tables and chairs appeared well kept and the interior was decorated nicely. I was kindly greeted and my order was taken promptly. While waiting for my drinks, it felt overly warm inside the establishment but not sure if that was weather related or if it was their A/C. The matcha drinks were quite refreshing and tasteful. I ordered them less sweet and felt like it was appropriate because it didn't mask over the umami and astringency notes of the matcha.

This reminds me of the Korean cafes that are sprinkled all over Southern California. We were delighted to see it here! I ordered a black sesame late and a black sesame mochi donut. Being only one barista, right after you order, he makes your drink immediately. You can hear and see the espresso shots being made and the ice filling your cups. Dependent on your order, he pulls out the cream for the top. I can see the black sesame cream top being very thick and full. A lot of patrons were ordering their tiramisu latte, and I don't blame them! It's what is very popular here. Personally, I enjoyed the black sesame latte very much. It was the perfect amount of cream and sweetness. The taste didn't overpower the coffee, which is nice. Their mochi donuts were good, too, with the consistency of mochi dough. Definitely would make another stop here if I'm ever around!

His hospitality set the tone for the whole evening--warm, relaxed, and full of conversation between people from all over the world. One of the highlights was watching Joe prepare traditional Egyptian coffee over hot sand, a centuries-old method that slowly heats the coffee and brings out deep, rich flavors. But the real comfort of the night came in the form of Egyptian Sahlab. Imagine a thick, creamy winter drink made from warm milk, gently sweetened and flavored with vanilla and orange blossom water. Those of you who tried it know what I am talking about! It was very nice to get a beautiful taste of Egyptian culture right here on Hawthorne. Huge thanks to Joe for the incredible hospitality and for sharing these traditions with us. I hope they expand to include a full Egyptian, Mediterranean food menu.

We stopped in here after playing a round at the Wonderwood Mini Golf. It had been hot and cramped and we really needed a drink. The door was being held open by a line of people and usually that is a great sign. Being busy is awesome for the business and I am glad they are so popular. It was a weekday, probably around 11 am and there were just so many people in line. It was really cute inside but SO chaotic. There were tons of kids screaming and at times it was difficult to tell where the line really was. After about 5 minutes of the line not moving, I started to get a slight headache from the noise and we agreed we would have to go somewhere else. It was probably for the best as all the indoor and outdoor seating was full so there would have been nowhere for us to eat even if we had braved the line. I think when a business reaches this level of popularity, it's important to put systems in place to keep patrons from feeling crowded and overwhelmed and it's definitely something they might want to look into in the future.
