This local coffee shop is small but mighty. The inside has little seating, but the seated is does have is well lit with natural lighting and gives the shop a quiet and quaint vibe. The coffee itself was very flavorful and the barista was friendly. This cafe is also attached to the next-door hotel which includes a photo camera booth where you can take pictures by yourself or with another person in a old fashioned style booth. Overall, I would definitely recommend this coffee shop if you are looking for something local or something new. It is conveniently located ~5 minutes walking distance from the Powell's off burnside making it a great spot to stop in a grab a quick coffee while walking downtown as well. read more

Never understood the allure about Water Avenue. The nitro in a can was okay. More confirmation that breakfast burritos sold inside office buildings are almost always underwhelming. This is the fourth disappointment in South Downtown. The guy/barista is stoic to borderline unfriendly. The big plus about this place is the layout and seating area. read more

I've been to their location on the east side before and enjoyed it. So when I found myself staying three blocks from their west side location, I wanted to go. I got a lavender latte and a cinnamon roll. If I were rating the latte by itself, I would give this place five stars. Too often, coffee shops try so hard to not have the lavender be overpowering that the milk actually overpowers it. However, they got the amount of lavender right. The lavender stood out without being overpowering. However, the cinnamon roll seemed really tough and a bit stale. This location is in the lobby of the Wells Fargo Tower, so it's more of a grab-and-go vibe than a chill-and-savor vibe. The barista was good too. read more

Both people working (the girl behind the counter who took my order and the barista who made my latte) were really friendly and helpful. The girl was so pleasant and upbeat with every single customer she encountered for the entire time I sat here-- over 45 minutes. I got a decaf soy latte and a raspberry scone (vs blueberry) at her recommendation. They have almond soy, oat, coconut, and regular milk options. You guys.... the decaf is actually really good!! This is so exciting. It's mellow and not strong or bitter. Also the scone I got was sooo tasty. The outer parts were crisp and it was sweet with just a bit of tartness in the raspberry. Great coffee, friendly baristas and convenient location if you're staying at a hotel (or working) downtown. The place itself is small as it's in the lobby of an office building. There are only 3 two person tables and some counter seating, so not a place you're going to hang out for awhile to work on anything. Some of the tables are so close to the building lobby entrance you get the draft of the doors hitting you and constant foot traffic in and out. read more

Firstly - Autumn (short brown hair w/glasses) is the coolest gal ever. She was really helpful and I was beyond impressed by her service and knowledge about coffee. I got an iced soy latte and a 12oz coffee (a smooth, yet strong tasting coffee originating from Ethiopia - I didn't need any creamer, which says something about good coffee). The small shop is located at the lobby of a hotel, so it wasn't the greatest feel if you're looking for a place to have a conversation. Water Ave Coffee is one of my favorite spots. Their coffee is phenomenal, and the brunch is a very delicious treat. The Parmesan and Herb scones + Toad and a Hole are my frequent eats. I really only know about Water Avenue Coffee from other establishments that serve their coffee (such as Little Red's Bakeshop) and have always found it super smooth yet with an agreeably strong flavor. I had to do some background reading because I only have drank their coffee elsewhere. They have their flagship store over on the east side in the old produce district where they roast their beans. They have also started a barista training school so very apropos to Portland. I read a portion of their blog and liked their strong commitment to Portland, their interesting tea blends, and their expansion plans. Their expansion plans are actually the point (and like Ellen Degeneres likes to say, "and I do have a point,") point of this review, so let's talk about this excellent Water Avenue Coffee Shop outlet. It is located in the lobby of the Chase Bank Building just across the street from Pioneer Courthouse Square. It was a smart move to open it now while the Starbucks is under wraps during renovation of the Square. Starbucks is in sore need of an update and renovation as it is showing its age, so it is very refreshing to walk into this cheery light-filled space that is open to the lobby to order coffee. There are lots of windows and use of golden-toned wood (birch I believe). Decoration focuses on the light and wood. Seating is limited to a couple of tables and a bar with high stools for some great people watching. Otherwise, this is a grab-and-go place for the downtown worker bees. I sat at the window bar after receiving my smooth Americano and relished our first sunny Saturday in ages. Service was friendly and efficient. I am going to enjoy my future trips here a great deal! read more

When I told them that my preference was for soy or almond milk due to my intolerance of whole milk, they didn't pour the milk for me; they let me pour to my heart's content so that I could get the consistency just right. That's personalizing a customer's experience! The amblence for a small shop was also just right. I liked the street view, as it was on a nice, clean street right across from popular restaurants such as the new "Jack Rabbit", "Fogo De Chao", and the like. Meh. As is often the case I think there's probably more to say for the flagship location than there is this smaller satellite. It's conveniently located downtown PDX by Pioneer Square, but so are 100,000 other coffee options. I don't think this Water Ave has anything really setting itself apart right now. Other than the fact that it's not Starbucks. That's a plus, sure. The atmosphere is also noticeably weak for a coffeeshop. It has an "entrance to the mall" vibe going and the clean, but small interior is just not really a place you'd want to sit and relax or chat for long periods of time. There's nothing bad or WACK about this coffee, but if you're downtown PDX you can do much better and much more interesting than this. My experience was so generic I don't even have a hilarious twist on this review. I wasn't drunk or with any strippers. I know. Yawn. read more

Not too many options if you're looking for food with your joe but the coffee menu offered plenty of variety for me. This place is really hipster. It's classic Portland, fancy sign, and coffee is $4 for a drip. I ordered the golden mylk which is pretty much a turmeric latte with spices, and it was the perfect thing I needed in the morning before Church. My drink was $5 which is again pricey, but this place is in Portland and if you can take a photo of the inside, you'll be paying more than what you want for a cup of coffee. Would return! read more

Coffee is good. I've been going to Water Ave and buying beans since they opened in their original location. Tried the downtown spot for the first time. Very limited food options besides sweets but did have an $8 breakfast burrito with veggie sausage (or ham). Fellow at the counter said they were out of veggie sausage. Told him I'd have one without either protein then. He got a little premade burrito out of a fridge, popped it in the microwave and handed it over. When I am attending to business in Downtown Portland, Oregon I stop in at Water Avenue Coffee sometimes. I prefer this location to other less safe coffee shoppes in Downtown Portland. Also, sometimes... it's easier to stop in here than walk for another six to eight blocks for a different coffee shoppe experience. The barista who crafted my hot coffee drink was courteous and efficient. And I was told that I had to wait for another order to be crafted... as I was second in line. I didn't wait very long as I remember. Also, .... this location is across from the MAX stop that is headed West and East at Pioneer Courthouse Square... you can literally hop off the MAX, and hop back on to another MAX a few feet away. Remember to tip your Barista. Did I mention... sometimes, there are handsome and cute tourists that are waiting for their Mocha Lattes here. It's been a while since I was here last...
