The sandwiches are always delicious but it's getting pricey. I had a 1/2 sandwich then add avocado and cheese which ended up being about $13.00 for the 1/2 sandwich. There is usually a long line (for good reason) and the wait to get your food does takes a bit so expect to wait. Delicious but definitely a once in a while splurge. read more

Very nice sandwich shop in the heart of DTR right next to the Mission Inn! There is lot of seating space inside the shop, but be wary that during the peek hours of brunch it can get pretty packed and crowded! The great thing is there is also an option of outside seating. Their menu is super simple (hence their name), There are a lot of sandwiches, soups, pastries, and breakfast items to choose from! I came here for brunch and I had their mediterranean omlette ( replacing the olives with spinach.. not much of an olive fan). The omelette came with potatos and toast and a few slices of fruit. It is super filling and delicious! I also ordered a large orange juice and though it seemed a bit pricy, it made sense since it tasted like it was freshly squeezed orange juice. I will come back again to try their sandwiches. I've heard good things from my friends and need to see it for myself! The price of this place is a little more expensive than other sandwich shops I've been to, but keep in mind that this place serves good quality and has great presentation for their plates of food! read more

One of my favorite sandwich places here in riverside. This location is super cute and lowkey. The workers are very helpful and welcoming. And their sandwiches are suuuuper good. My favorite sandwich is the BLAATT with bacon, lettuce, arugula, avocado, turkey, and tomato! the ingredients are always fresh and so crunchy! What a gem! Popped in here this week for a quick breakfast. I had a custom omelette along with fresh fruit. It was so good!!!!! I also grabbed a blueberry scone for a later snack. There were a lot of people around, with lots of talking so it's a bit hard to hear. FOOD: I got the deluxe chile - it came with black beans, cheese, sour cream, avocados, tomatoes, etc. Around $10. My friend really enjoyed hers as well. It also came with a side of cornbread which was delicious and went very well with the chili. Very good food, but really overpriced for what you get. It's a breakfast and lunch place that serves soups sandwiches and assorted breakfast dishes. Most of the service is presented on paper plates and most of the time. There was a very long wait. There are other restaurants downtown in Riverside that you should try. This little spot was right next to my hotel and open for breakfast. I might have skipped it if it weren't recommended by a local. He told me that their sandwiches were delicious. You order at a counter and the food is brought to your seat. I decided to go with an omelet that had mushrooms and a chicken sausage. The young man who took my order told me it was his favorite. He asked me what kind of toast I wanted and then sent me down to pay. This is where the experience took a downturn. The young lady with funky colored hair was on the phone. She didn't make eye contact with me, gesture that she'd be with me shortly, or say anything to me. So, I stood there, waiting. I waited some more. She finally got off the phone and took my ticket. She didn't say anything. I saw the total pop up on the register and I gave her cash. She handed me my receipt and a cup. Ok. I went to the beverage area and got my iced tea. I found a small table and sat down. A few minutes later, the young man who took my order came over with my breakfast. "Did you pay? " "Yeah, here's my receipt." "She didn't give you any silverware?" "No." "I'll be right back." He disappeared and returned with my toast and some ketchup and preserves. He apologized for her not giving me the silverware. "I think you'll love it. It is my favorite thing on the menu." He was only slightly wrong. I liked it, but didn't love it. I wasn't sure if it were the onions or the sausage that had a sweet taste. Something was overly sweet and threw off the other flavors. It wasn't awful, but if I could isolate the sweet, I wouldn't eat it. The potatoes were perfectly cooked and had a nice seasoning on them. The star of the show were the preserves. They were delicious. I would have bought a jar! I am not a fan of the high back wooden booths. They strike me as flimsy and I'm a big man. I went to Simple Simon's for a quick lunch. I ordered the BLAAT sandwich (just missed the breakfast service). You place your order at the front of the counter, then take your ticket to the back of the counter to pay. Once you pay, you choose your seating. Luckily I went at a good time so there was plenty of seats available. The first time I went here it was pretty packed so it was hard to find seating inside the store. The food came quick and it was good. However, I'm giving 4/5 because it wasn't anything special. I personally wouldn't go out of my way to get this sandwich again. This section of Main is very quaint: It is blocked off and there is an Italian restaurant across the way, and several small shops close by. Simple Simon's has breakfast bakery items, sandwiches and full breakfasts available. I ordered the breakfast sandwich special: One egg, tomato, your choice of meat and cheese for $4.50. I opted for sourdough bread, egg white, no mayo, bacon and no cheese. I also had a small, freshly squeezed OJ for $3. The sandwich was very good. The bread was fresh, and my special order was made to perfection. In addition, they put avocado instead of mayo at no extra charge. The OJ was also very good: Both 4 Stars. The ambiance is very nice. You walk up to the counter and you can see some of the bakery items to make your mouth water. The service was also very friendly and efficient. The sandwich came out very quickly: Both 4 Stars. If I have another am meeting in Riverside, SS's is my go to place. The food is good and reasonably priced. In addition, the location is cool and the staff is chill. Everybody praises and kisses this place's butt, but, there are several bleak moments in my history of coming here. Yes, Saturday is bad unless you come ultra early, my gripes have more to do with coordination of service to the time it takes to pay. Ok, here's the good part before the slam: pastries = yummy; carrot cake, ditto; many sandwiches, good. Breakfast, well, the next paragraph will assess that. Busy but not peak was the situation. Late November or early December. I ordered breakfast (great bacon, fantastic toast, properly cooked eggs to order, good fruit, whatever potatoes). The line never moved. .. some schmuck ordered a ton of gift cards with different values, and instead of delegating the register to another employee, the owner tied up the line for ten minutes! I had already claimed a seat by leaning over the divider wall and placed my order number card. While I stood there, about six people back, my order was called and delivered to my table. I was faced with the following dilemma: go and eat (for free minus the coffee I wanted)? Or be honest and eat a cold meal that would never get replaced? I opted for cold, but I immediately regretted my honesty. The toast sucks cold, as did everything else that was supposed to be warm. It is moments like this that I feel like finding other options, like a place with a grilled reuben. Go when it's slow, and take your chances in the winter festival season. read more

Great food, terrible service! No food for 30 minutes, when I inquired, I was told it was made...My blood sugar was dropping and my friend had her food and was waiting to eat it. This is the hot focaccia sandwich and the vegetarian chili. The hot focaccia sandwich was really good, but I don't think it's the greatest. The balsamic red bell peppers just had a very strong taste that over powers the eggplant. However, the bread was very good, I would recommend getting a loaf of sourdough because all of the breads are well made. The vegetarian chili was the greatest part of the meal. The black beans were well cooked and I am truly going back to get more chili. I think the deluxe vegetarian sounds really good, but I am not so sure if it's worth an extra $4 for. Overall this was an amazing meal and I recommend trying this place and if your a fan of balsamic then try this sandwich. Also the pasta salad was a great side dish! read more

This is a good solid 4+. While I do not love everything on their menu, those things I do, are fabulous. I love their homemade granola, strong coffee, and moist nutty carrot cake. Their pastry case is always temptingly filled with decadent goodies. How many places do you know that make a rhubarb tart? Breakfast plates always are presented beautifully with the season's nicest fruit . Since they've re-opened post-fire, their bacon has returned to great, as did their fried potatoes with their breakfast dishes (there was a time pre-fire where things were sub-par and stingy, and I found myself not interested in going anymore, so I am relieved at this revival). Their bread is delicious, and don't forget to ask for the raspberry jam they pump into little paper cups. Yum. And serve-yourself coffee. When the weather is nice (technically most of the year round) there are tables with umbrellas outside, and you can marvel at the great view of the magnificent Mission Inn (and at Christmas time, lights and decorations are extra special). Their outdoor dining area welcomes your canine friends as well. Your doggie will love the outing. Parking is a challenge, with the nearest lots available only if you have a permit. Street parking is limited and requires coinage. Otherwise, you must walk a bit. My regret is that since the fire and re-opening, the ambiance is not quite the same. Yes, the same rich deep colors, and 100+ yr old brick walls, and interesting woodwork and crown molding, but I miss the authentic tin ceilings, charming pictures and wall hangings, and the patina made by various antique-y things that screamed of "quaint". I hope that will return someday. Meanwhile, that is not a deal breaker and I happily return. read more

Located in the historical and beautifully architected downtown riverside is a cute, quaint, and delicious sandwich shop know as simple Simons. I am always pleasantly surprised when I find a hidden gem in riverside with tasteful food (cause to be honest it's a bit hard). Simple Simon has a great selection of delicious sandwiches; ranging from chicken pesto (what I normally get), chicken salad, to blt, they are normal sandwiches made very well. You won't expect an out of ordinary sandwiches but it is a great lunch spot located in the nice part of riverside. My grilled chicken pesto sandwich included perfectly toasted nutty bread, while the chicken was perfectly tender and juicy; the pesto was the perfect amount, and they had avocado, lettuce, and tomato. Come come come & try it, I always enjoyed coming here for lunch. Forewarning though, you park via meters in DTR, but it's $1 per hour so it's not too bad. read more

We went to Simple Simon's at 2:30 on a weekday afternoon hoping to grab a quick sandwich. It took over 50 minutes for them to make 2 sandwiches! The sandwiches were not good. The "club" sandwich came as roast beef swimming in mayo instead but we were starving by then so ate it anyway. The lamb sandwich had two very thin strips of drastically overcooked lamb with a thin layer of hummus painted on the bread. The tables and floors were dirty. The bathroom was dirty and had no hand soap. The iced tea was refillable except they ran out of it and never brewed more. The bear claw was the best I've ever had so I have to give the restaurant 1 star for that. read more
