After Heng Lay, Simply Khmer is probably our 2nd go to Cambodian restaurant. A popular choice at the Cambodian restaurant is the Triple Combo with papaya salad, wings and sticky rice. You can get plain wings or flavored wings. The spice in the papaya salad can be custom-ed to your preference. I think it's a great deal at $ 8.95 and can also serve as an entree for one person or a starter for several people. The menu has many rice plates with stir frys and grilled meats. Our favorite is the popular Cambodian beef loc lac dish. This time, we shared the grilled pork chops. I thought it was nice that they cut the pork in the kitchen to make it easier for the diner to eat. When we go in a group, we typically order a few dishes and eat it family style. Our eyes are always bigger than our stomach and we tend to over order. My family loves the wings, calamari and Mee Ka Thung wide rice noodle dishes. My sister loves their pineapple and mango fried rice. Although their mee Ka thung Chow foon wide rice noodles is delicious, I absolutely love their mee bumborng noodles. The yellow noodles are deep fried to shape like a bird's nest or basket then is topped with a seafood or meat stir fry. The thick gravy softens the noodles and creates a great texture. It is very similar to Chinese's pan fried noodles. The crowd generally prefers the popular hot wings but I actually prefer the Angkor wings which is also deep fried but tossed with garlic and peppers in lieu of the sweet chili sauce. When I am lazy, we order quite a bit of takeout from the popular establishment. Our favorite dishes for take out are eggrolls, pad thai (Mee Cha), fried spicy calamari and the famous Hot Wings. With numerous Khmer restaurants located nearby, Simply Khmer sure has a lot of competition, yet I kept hearing everyone mentioning this new kid on the block. Recently I've finally had the chance to try it with some friends. Albeit a bit tiny, the food on the other hand is amazing and the prices are out of this world! I love how they serve simple authentic Cambodian comfort foods that caters to the locals yet keeps in mind of those who aren't too familiar with Cambodian cuisine, I find it really amazing that almost everything on the menu has a picture to go along with the dish, really helps those who want to know what they'll be eating before they order it. Okay, Simply. You've won my heart back over and I'm washing away the sour taste that my previous review left in my mouth with delicious food and regularly filled glasses of water. Half a year later, and my visits have been consistently good since then. There's still a lot of new faces I don't recognize, but the service has been on point, the food delivery punctual, and the overall experience enjoyable. I've even expanded past my regular choice of loc lac or kuy teav, and branched out to try their spicy chicken mee katang. I haven't experimented with much of the menu, mostly because when I find something I love, I consistently get it. The spicy mee katang sauce has a kick to it that compliments the chinese broccoli, flat noodles, and meat perfectly. I brought two Khmer food newbies there recently, and they enjoyed their loc lac and mango fried rice. Their plates were clean, and they left full and happy. Parking on premise is limited. Simply Khmer gets packed very quickly and there are only so many spots one can get a hold of. More often than not, people park off-street on Lincoln. I know I'm in the minority when I express my opinions. There are people who SWEAR by Simply Khmer, but I just can't bring myself to even like the food. It's just ok. That, paired with the hosts' lack of ANSWERING THEIR PHONE CALLS for a to-go order... This is some place I'd only go if someone paid for me (case in point: the last time I went was on Thursday and it was because my cousin was "craving" Simply Khmer and offered to pay for my mikathang!)! I've come here a few times over the years and my opinion of the food hasn't changed. The mikathang (or pad see ew, chow fun) is kinda bland. I feel like the sauce needs to develop more flavor! I know hoisin sauce and sriracha are normal accompaniments to the dish, but should I feel the NEED to use 'em? I don't think I should. I've also gotten kathiew (or Cambodian pho).. and the broth is just ok. My H, when we do go, usually orders the fried squid app. It's ok... but bland! Great experience! I have only been to a Cambodian restaurant s couple of times. When I walked in the cashier greet me right away. She told me to just wait a few minutes and she sat me. I only order two items since I went alone. Papaya salad- it was delicious. It was Cambodian style and it did have the pahok sauce but it did not stink at all. It can with lettuce and basil. It was a big portion for one person. Pleah Sach Ko- this is the Cambodian beef salad. Wow better then my moms. Usually nothing is better then moms cooking but I really enjoyed it. The only down side I found about this place was the difficulty finding it. Even with my GPS leading the way I had minor trouble but I found it and thank the food gods. The service isn't stellar here but it's not that kind of place. That's not saying it's bad service it's just not sleek polished upscale it's adequate. The surroundings as well are spartan at best even the fish tank is boring however the humongous Pacu Pacu are the entire display. A bit ominous and a bit overcrowded in the fish tank. I asked if they were to eat and the waiter said they were the bosses pride and joy. The menu is the star of the show and it's a Broadway sensation. Slam dunk! Grand Slam! There's two things I hate about restaurants and I've hit both of those things when I came here today. 1. I hate bad service. It was fairly busy I suppose when I went to dine here earlier today but there were three waiters there to handle a total of probably... 6 tables? That's 1 waiter per 2 tables, I shouldn't have to wait to get refills on my water (which never came) or 20 minutes for a check (which i had to flag down the server for). This is the first time I came where it was just bad and if that wasn't bad enough... 2. I hate inconsistent food. I ordered their Pho a few weeks back and was totally blown away by it. Ranted and raved about it to all my friends and family members, telling them to go get some. Came here today and the Pho was nowhere near what it was that day. Simply Khmer Food seems like a pretty popular choice for Cambodian food. Heck, it seems to be so popular that even Andrew Zimmern dropped in for a visit to film to film an episode of Bizarre Foods! But, I'm sorry to say this, but I think that Simply Khmer Food might be a tad bit overrated. The food here is pretty good, and I'm a Cambodian guy, so I know my Khmer food. They serve the usual Cambodian dishes here, like Fried Rice, Noodle Soup, Congee, Chow Foon, Steak Salad, and Loc Lac (steak tips), and they taste all right, though I thought that there wasn't much variety, and that the portions were tiny! The lunch portion of the beef chow foon was so small that even my 11 year old brother wasn't full, and he barely eats a lot of food. But, portions aside, the food is pretty good, and their Angkor Wings are amazing! Crunchy, sweet, sour, and spicy deliciousness! Get these with a side of Fried Rice, and you'll be in Cambodian food heaven! One time while I was at the restaurant, I asked for some water, and the waiter poured me some, but while he was pouring it, I saw a piece of straw wrapper swirling around in my glass. Yuck! I got a Thai Tea Shake instead to replace the water, and the shake was delicious, although they didn't have any Tapioca Pearls, but that's not a big deal. The service here can be a little ditzy. The majority of the staff is comprised of teens, and they seem to like to gossip with each other a lot, so they may be a little hard to flag down. Overall, Simply Khmer Food is an OK, yet overrated, Cambodian restaurant, but I think that there are much better options for Khmer food in Lowell, such as Red Rose Restaurant and Peephuptmei Restaurant, though the Angkor Wings here are really good! I've frequented this place often enough to say it has always been consistent. Some say it maybe a little pricey, but those people have not come to realize inflation is real! The only time I've had Khmer food was in Toronto so I'm definitely not an expert on authenticity or anything. We picked Simply Khmer because we read an AP article saying it was perhaps the best Khmer restaurant in the US. We stopped by at 6:30 on the Sunday of the folk festival and had no trouble getting a parking spot or a table. The waitress was helpful, kind and friendly. She helped us pick out some of the more "authentic" dishes, warned us in case we didn't like our beef rare and even charged our phone in the back so that we could get to the airport. It seems that the westernized dishes are at the front and the more authentic ones are at the back. (No surprise). The only problem with Simply Khmer is that dishes are meant to be served family style and each dish could feed 3-4 people. We didn't know that when we come in and so we WAY over ordered. We ordered a beef salad and a pork belly stew, and rice and those three things could have feed us for three meals. I was actually embarassed at how little we ate but we weren't going to make a decent dent in it so there wasn't even a point in stuffing ourselves. The waitress kindly packed up our delicious food in plastic containers (the soup kind) to make it easier for us to take it on the flight. We actually drank as much of the pork stew/soup as we thought necessary right before security and combined the rest with our rice to get it through security because we didn't want to waste any of it. I'm sitting here eating my pork belly flavored rice for breakfast and very happy with our decision. Total for dinner was like $44, but really, that was for three dinners! So I took my bf on a long trip up the East coast. I mean, I needed a driver, right? Between our Brooklyn and New Hampshire stops we planned ahead to stop in Lowell. Lowell has one of the highest cambodian populations. One of us (I'm not saying who) is Cambodian so they wanted to check out some eats. After fighting our way out of NYC we finally arrived there and hungry. We ordered two items. The waitress thought we were crazy. These are meant to feed a family. But, variety, yo. We got a soup and a stir fry. And rice. Duh. The soup was Som-Law Ma-Ju Kroung Sach Ko. Aka a beef/beef tripe soup with a tangy tamarind kaffir lime broth and a variety of tasty vegetables. SO GOOD. The other dish was Cha Kroung Sach Ko. Beef stir fried with slices of bell peppers, jalapeno, basil and a bunch of freaking delicious flavors. Oh and it was spicy. Someone was sweating. I won't say who but I will say it's not the Cambodian one of us. We took the rest to go and kept on our merry journey to my aunt's farm in New Hampshire, where my aunt, uncle and lambs were waiting. read more

Talking about service which I have seen from the reviews as bad to poor service, my experience is different, my waiter and waitress has been attentive and kind. I order spring rolls and other few items on the menu which was the Angkor Wings and hot spicy wings and meekathung specials and some egg rolls I placed the order for pick up and finally gave it a taste! I went online to their website and called in a lunch special lok lak (this review was updated for someone with reading comprehension who messaged me directly Timmy k or something). I already wanted to cancel my order but they had already begun making it so I decided to suck it up. I received my food and asked for a hot sauce. She said it was 50 cents...... On a 14 dollar lunch? Whatever... just prepping me for the rest of my meal. I get out my credit card and she says no credit card for 50 cent charge (who carries cash?). It's sad to say that I have to downgrade to one star. It's really no surprise that the service sucks. Don't expect to get acknowledged and make sure you order if you know what you want when you are seated or you'll probably never see the waitress again. I'm not sure where the waitresses are for the majority of the time but tonight I was VERY annoyed and needed to share my experience. I came in with two other friends and we were catching up so the lack of service didn't bother us as it normally would. I ordered calamari to go on a separate check and spoke to 3 different girls about it. We had a new girl give us our check at the end (not our waitress). We paid and everything but sat there for another 45 minutes just chatting. When I walked out, I had noticed I didn't get my calamari yet so I came back in and asked for it. The girl at the counter proceeded to tell me that since it was on a separate check, I still need to pay for it. What do you mean?? I literally signed the receipt when I was still sitting down and I gave a tip that they didn't even deserve!! I told her I already paid when the other waitress brought all our checks out. They were rummaging through the mounds of receipt and were trying to accuse me of not paying for it yet. I told her the table hadn't been cleared when I left and she snapped back at me and said the receipts would have been in front of her. I was getting so frustrated because it seemed like they forgot about my order altogether and all they were concerned about was if I paid yet. The girl seemed pretty convinced I hadn't so she brought out another woman who looked at my tab on the computer screen and the thing still said "open" and said I haven't paid. At this point I was PISSED so right when I pulled up my bank statement on my phone to prove to these people I paid for it, she found the receipt. I bet they felt SOOO stupid. MAYBE IF I HAD ONE WAITRESS WHO CONSISTENTLY SERVED ME AND ACTUALLY DID HER JOB FROM BEGINNING TO END, THIS WOULDNT HAPPEN.
