Update: The Shack is one of my favorite restaurants for home cooking. We got there around 1 pm and waited for over 30 minutes for a table. That's how popular the restaurant is! I got the chicken and dumplings with three sides: one side was peanut butter pie which was delicious. The lunch meal also includes a beverage and bread corn bread or a store bought cold roll. I've been driving by this spot for years and it's always been packed... not regular packed but people parked in the street and the road trying to get in packed. This Thursday I was heading up with the wife to buy some fish and we decided to go for it. Of course there was zero parking with a parade of cars in the parking lot waiting to pick up food, when my wife noticed a pick up truck right in front of the place about to exit. She sped right next to the spot and jumped in before anyone realized it. We're in...or so I thought. We strolled up and there were about 35 people sitting on benches and rocking chairs under a tent right in front of the place all waiting to get in. I figured this is not going to be easy. I went up to the hostess station and asked how long for a table for two and she said 35 minutes or so. I looked at my wife and gave her my name. I had to find out what all the hub bub was about. In about 30 minutes they shouted my name and I sprinted to the front door...I wasn't about to lose my table. In we went and we're shown a nice size table in the middle of the place. It kinda reminded me of a beachy mom and pop diner. The friendly waitress came to the table right away, gave us our menus, showed us the specials board and took a drink order. The menu was simple but had some choices on it. While we were thinking, she came back with our drinks and we quickly ordered an appetizer. In this case, onion rings. A few minutes later my wife settled on a crab cake app and a salad which she asked to be combined. I went for the soup of the day(NE clam chowder) and one of the specials...pork chops(I took my grilled not fried) with 3 sides, Lima beans, okra & tomatoes stewed and green beans. The meal came with a choice of cornbread or roll. I opted for the cornbread. In a flash, the onion rings came out followed by the soup. Now I do love me some onion rings and these were fantastic. Crispy, flavorful and not stringy. The soup was home made. Creamy with bits of clam and chunks of potato. No salt or pepper was needed as it came out steaming hot and perfect. It was a meal in itself and I ended up taking 3/4 home with me(something rarely do). After a few minutes, the main course came out. My wife dug into a very large homemade crab cake, chock full of crab meat and very flavorful. She loved it. The salad was fresh and crisp. My pork chops came out and the size of the plate shocked me. Now, I almost never talk about price but my plate was $12.49 and I got two large perfectly prepared, juicy pork chops with a healthy helping of the best okra and stewed tomatoes I ever had plus absolutely delicious green beans and tasty lima beans. What a deal! The only thing that wasn't above average was the corn bread which was a tad dry and plain. Most of the regulars opted for the home made roll(and the fried chicken which was being served at every table!). I was stuffed and had trouble finishing my plate. My wife who said she was full, managed to save enough room for dessert. Now everyone was eating the homemade peach cobbler so I suggested that. My wife never had it before and was thinking about the Oreo pie, but I persuaded her and she was glad I did. Instead of the usual whip cream she wanted vanilla ice cream with it and it was a fantastic combo. The cobbler came out piping hot and crumbly with sweet chunks of peaches that paired well with the cold vanilla ice cream. She attacked it so fast that I couldn't get a picture. I broke my own rules and dipped in for a few spoonfuls and I'm glad I did. It was heavenly. The bill came and I couldn't believe how reasonable it was. Now I know why you can't get into the joint. We paid our bill and gave the super friendly waitress a nice tip and were on our way. We will absolutely be back and will try to time it a bit better so we can find parking...or we'll take an Uber...it was that good. read more

We came when it was raining, but it was still really busy. My little kids enjoyed playing in the sand pit in the back searching for shells. We got seated after about a 20min wait and everything on the menu looked good. I really appreciated the complimentary hush puppies with honey butter. They were delicious. The littles got shrimp with Mac & cheese and a hamburger and fries. They each really enjoyed their meals. The older kids and I each got the Mama Todd's Dinner Special (meat & 3). I got the fries chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy and cornbread. One of the older girls got the fried chicken with fries and Mac & cheese and the other one got the grilled chicken with fries and Mac & cheese. We all ate until we were stuffed, and thoroughly enjoyed everything. Bonus for the price being very affordable. I would definitely eat here again the next time we're in Myrtle Beach. read more

Stopped into The Shack (finally...lol) for lunch today as I have been wanting to get here for quite some time. Their lunch special is $11.99 (which includes a drink) and the amount of food you get is totally worth it. I got the fried chicken lunch plate with squash casserole and mac n cheese and peach cobbler for dessert. The corn bread tasted under cooked to me which bummed me out. The food was so good and I had plenty of leftovers to bring home for the hubs. My friend got the grilled chicken lunch plate with Cole slaw and green beans and peach cobbler for dessert. She was very pleased with how juicy the chicken breasts were as they can be so hit and miss. Service was mediocre and only saw our server when she took our order and dropped the check off. The food is wonderful. No doubt, and the collards are sweet and the chicken sandwich was good but the onion rings are made there and dang if they aren't the best. The ambience is pure Myrtle beach... old Myrtle beach... the location is small so when it's busy, it's busy. We were there around noon and it was pretty full. The service was ok, nothing to write home about, honestly. The ladies (the waitresses were all women) moved about and checked on things. The reason it's a maybe is because if your not a local, the customers seem to notice and while I didn't feel anything, my wife was pretty uncomfortable, which had us skip the fantastic looking cobbler... hence the maybe but the still three stars for standard for food, ok service, but nothing truly that stands out... read more

Everyone was so sweet and friendly! (We went with some lunch combos via to-go ordering and our food came in +/- 7 minutes) The "Chicken Bog" is incredibly tasty & filling. The fried chicken is what Chic-fil-A wishes it could be. The collards and mac & cheese are both top-shelf recipes ... to the point that my 6-yo - not usually keen on either - ate more of them than his french fries (which were also good). The peach cobbler and banana pudding weren't pretentious by any means, but they were definitely elevated compared to the average blue plate sweet course. I absolutely love this place. It's hard to find places to get good vegetables at but this one definitely has it rockin. Their menu lets you do the classic meat and 2 or 3 while also offering platter type choices. From the road it's not much to look at but surprisingly the interior fits more people than the outside lets on. I love their rotating specials where you can get southern classics or fish. I've haven't had anything where I thought "it's just ok". The service and food is great! Be prepared to wait for a bit to be seated though. This place is not a well kept secret. This place is a gem! Imagine going to dinner at your grandma's house where she serves the best southern food with lots of love baked in.......that is what The Shack offers. We came for dinner and did have to wait for a table, but they have rocking chairs in the shade and the weather was fine. We arrived around 10 a.m. (late for me, but breakfast time for my wife). We were seated quickly and Elisabeth greeted us within a minute. She was smiling and friendly. We ordered our drinks and breakfast. Elisabeth suggested over-light for our eggs rather than our usual over-easy. It was great. We were on vacation to Myrtle Beach and this place seemed like a good idea. We ordered the surf and turf and crab cake sandwich. The steak on the surf and turf was suppose to be medium but was rare in most spots on the steak and it was heavily seasoned with pepper which was off putting to myself and husband. The turf part of it was 2 jumbo scallops and baby shrimp which I wasn't expecting. Being by the water I was expecting larger shrimp. Brought out some Take-Out after all in our Seniors group were unable to make the trip. Many places have turned against a good off premises meal, but these guys are so helpful and cheerful about it. Really really tasty home lovin' FOOD! The staff for one are all so sweet, & welcoming. We got sat pretty late because we were driving around trying to find a place to eat. The shack is straight up good. The honey butter hush puppies are so fun and a different type of hushpuppies then most are used to. Liked that they were complementary. The seafood was very fresh and battered wonderfully, not too thick and great seasoning. The shrimp and grits are divine and so home cooked, tasted like your grandma cooked them. Must go to this place! Definitely a place where locals go, and try to get there early normally a line. Also! In the summer they are OPEN PAST 8. We arrived around 7:30 and there was a 45 minute wait. The staff were all very nice and welcoming even though we were sat 15 minutes after their 8:00 closing time. We never felt rushed. The food was very fresh and came out quickly. We had fried and grilled seafood and the steak and shrimp entree. Everything was cooked to perfection. We always see plenty of cars outside the Shack so thought it must be pretty special. I can say that the staff was great!! The food, on the other hand left all (three) of us disappointed. Generally, the fish was overcooked - way overcooked. Returned one dish for another selection but it wasn't much better. We probably won't be back in the near future. read more

The Shack is decent food at a very reasonable price. We had a group of 6, and everyone enjoyed their meal and nobody left hungry. The $10.99 dinner special is the way to go with meat choice, bread, and 3 sides (and one of the sides can be dessert!). My choice was fried catfish with slaw, lima beans, and strawberry cobbler. Also got some tastes from other family members. The best were: seafood platter, fried chicken, fried catfish, lima beans, apple cobbler, and strawberry cobbler. The food here is always great, like Grandma's home cookin! There is always a meat n 3 sides menu available along with the other menu items, and the prices are very reasonable. The service here is top notch, we frequent this restaurant and have never had poor service. Love the cozy feel of this locals and tourist favorite, old fishing pics on the walls from local fishermen and other historical pictures.
