This is the best place to recycle metal. Sims always provides the best prices compared to other recyclers. Other metal recyclers take their metal to Sims to make a profit. Sims always provides good prices since they are a large international company. There is always a long line so be prepared to wait. They are closed for lunch at 10:45-11:45, so avoid going at that time. There is a non-ferrous building where items can be placed in 4'x4' bins and weighed. Recycling tin/iron is accomplished by driving onto a scale to enter the scrap area and driving off of the scale upon exit to determine the scrap weight. Large aluminum scrap such as engines/transmissions can also be deposited through the drive on scale area. Be sure to bring a hard hat and vest. They have loaners if you don't have the required safety gear, but it may not be clean. They no longer take CRV items. Now it is not crowded with homeless people since this used to be the main CRV recycler of the entire population of downtown homeless. There is a building to receive payment. They are very vigilant about preventing scrap metal theft. You must present your driver's license in order to recycle metal. Thumb print may also be required depending on what is being recycled. They will also make you look at a camera so they can take a clear picture of your face. Payment for non-ferrous metals is provided in 3 days and you can come back to receive cash or elect to have a check mailed. read more

Go to Schnitzers. This place ripped me off. I had 5 gallon buckets full of nuts, bolts, screws, and tools. Very heavy iron and some gutter and downspouts. I was graded as ALL TIN!!! $48.00??? This place has a problem with explaining the requirements for recycling copper wire. After calling this place about the necessary requirements to recycle wire, we show up to find out that they want additional information. This scenario played out twice for us. Now they are requiring a letter from the CEO or CFO of the company stating that it's ok to recycle said wire. The letter is understandable but how about telling your customers this requirement when they call and ask what's required. Their website says they cater to plumbers and electricians for scrap copper. That's not really the case. They actually make it quite difficult. Even after talking to the office manager about the lack of information being given out to customers who want to follow the law, her attitude toward us was actually rude. They just lost a returning customer. read more

i came here because sim's downtown location was extremely crowded with long wait times. another guy in line said that the rancho cordova location was less crowded, so i made the 25 minute drive to rancho. also, i think that the 12th avenue location caters more to the large commercial/industrial guys and the rancho location is better set up for us small scale recyclers. there were only a couple of other guys there when i arrived, but i was the first to unload. i compared prices between sims and universal service recyclers. sims is way better, e.g.: $2.00/lb for yellow brass vs $.70/lb; $.44/lb for dirty aluminum vs $.20/lb; $.38/lb for clean lead vs $.30; and $.12/lb for car batteries vs $.05. also the staff here are very friendly and willing to help. read more

Ida's parents asked me to help them remove some custom iron gates from their yard and offered to let me keep the money from the iron in return so I loaded up my truck and headed for Sims Metal Management with her father. Sims is kind of way out off of the beaten path but I still managed to drive there in a little over 20 minutes. I didn't really see any instructions when I drove into their yard so I drove my load of heavy duty scrap iron up onto a scale and went in the door beside it that did not read "authorized personnel only". Surprising enough, I was in the right place and after waiting a couple of minutes someone provided me with assistance. They outfitted us with safety gear that included hard hats and safety vests. I was amazed how fast they converted me into a redneck. It was almost as good as playing dress up on Halloween. Next I was given directions to the pile they wanted me to dump my iron "scrappage" onto. Good deal, I hopped back into my truck and headed over to the pile he described and backed right up to it. I jumped out of my truck, struggle to get my gloves over my strong, fat fingers, and lowered my tailgate. That was when some guy immediately started yelling at me from a crane. Unfortunately, it was too loud for me to hear him from his crane and I had been instructed not to go near the crane by the guy in the office so I was standing there surrounded by giant piles of metal with huge ugly looking trucks chugging by wondering what to do when another employee walked up and instructed me that I was indeed putting my heavy duty metal products on the wrong pile and should be putting them on the identical looking pile just down the way. Feeling really grateful that this guy would take the time to help me, I moved my truck over to the appropriate pile and unloaded what seemed like tons of iron. Once empty with my tailgate back up, I reversed my direction and headed back to the scale. This time I had to wait for other vehicles before once again getting back on the scale and going back in the door that was not for employees only and once again I was assisted by the guy behind the counter who asked me to remove my truck from the scaled once he had recorded my weight. After moving my truck and returning to the counter I was given a form, asked for many signatures and told to take my paperwork to the cashier across the hall for a check. The line went quickly and before long I was standing in front of the cashier's window where I asked to receive cash rather than a check and then I signed some more papers and the lady came out the door from her office to instruct me on how to use their ATM to get my $30.30 in cash. I have done a pretty extensive research by finding all the recycling centers close to South Sacramento area and I called just about every place except for the very little ones. I found that Sims Metal Management in Rancho Cordova has the best prices. Ever since then I started to come here and one Saturday I visited this place and met a guy who drove there all the way from Elk Grove. I asked him why did he drive so far just to recycle some metal. He told me the reason why is because only this place was honest to him. He said other places that he visited would cheat him and were dishonest. He also said that this is a big company so they give good prices. They don't act like the little places that try to get every penny they can off every pound. While I was talking with the guy behind me the worker added that this company is also an international company. Recently they added a new rule for accepting non-ferrous metal. They want some sort of a written letter from where ever you get the non-ferrous metal. I believe this is only if your recycling a lot of non-ferrous metal. So if you have just a little bit they wouldn't mind but I would still call and make sure with them. read more

SAD but TRUE! I usually go there to bring scrap metal. Even though it's far, they have good prices. However, i brought most of my best copper, all at once. What happened was inconceivable! NOT how you run a business! Usually, one man handles the whole transaction: you bring the scrap metal, and put it on the weights. The weight is shown on the digital scales. Then they look at it, and itemise it, and give you the totals. Today, they decided to come up two people at a time. One guy faced me, and the other fumbled at the scale, behind the other's back. He brought a cart with other metals nearby, and as if throwing the items from the edge to the center of the scale. But some things, i suspect, flew somewhere else, on his cart!!! And they also changed the categories of copper wire prices. I asked them last time how much per pound for this wire, they said 1.65/lb. Today the same kind of wire, on receipt they paid only 79cents/lb! I think they stole about $35 of copper from me. I don't know if the management is in on this, but the employees are VERY strange. PAY ATTENTION next time you are there. Don't let them come close to your metals while on scale. They are THIEVES!! Thou shalt not steal. One of the ten commandments of God. I have been to many of the recycling yards around Sacramento, I do this for a living. this was the worst experience I have ever had. I only had a couple items and it took me 1 hour and 12 min waiting to get serviced, and they all just took off for lunch and shut down. The employee treated me like I wasn't even there. I have been to the Rancho location and the downtown location several times each and I have finally had it. I will never be back to this place again. read more

I had some useless junk parts off my last resto job and my buddy at work told me these guys buy scrap metal. the line was quite long cuz you're in line with people who do that for a living. I drove up with my truck they scaled my truck. We then parked next to a pile and unloaded. They weighed my truck again on the way out and subtract the difference. The dude was nice and helped me out. May have good prices but customer service was quite poor. Need to POST their ACTUAL closing times like TKO recycling does. Showed up the other day a few minutes before closing & they wouldn't let me in to recycle. When i went into their office to complain, i noticed their clock was fast, 3 mins ahead of internet time. Their system of vehicles weighing in on a scale may work well for big haulers but waiting in line with numerous other vehicles lined up is obnoxious for those with small loads, a 45 minute wait/process.
