Finally made it into the Sherman Oaks outpost of Sincerely Syria, a small chain of Shawarma restaurants in SoCal. I was pleasantly greeted by the owners, a friendly middle-aged couple who exude experience making this kind of street food from Damascus. It's a no frills venue with a good number of tables, clean bathrooms, and an array of Banksy prints lining the walls. The menu is small. You could even say it's micro, with just 3 items: Chicken Shawarma, a combination Beef/Lamb Shawarma, and Falafel. These are served in wraps of 2 different sizes or on a "platter" that is really a wrap sliced into pieces (like a sushi roll) and presented with French Fries. Canned sodas are available, along with a small selection of desserts and Middle-Eastern Pickles. I chose the Beef/Lamb Shawarma Wrap, and opted for the 6" size, which was plenty of food for lunch. The flatbread is lined with the meat, then adorned with tomatoes, onions, fresh parsley and Tahini. Finally, they warm the wrap on the flattop, which gives a nice crisp to the outside of the bread while further warming the fillings. The result is a nicely heated Syrian sandwich that's full of flavor and very satisfying. The tahini is creamy, with a touch of grit from the ground sesame that adds a pleasing texture to the chew. The meat is tasty and tender, having been marinated in a blend of Mediterranean seasonings before being slow-cooked on the upright spit, which leaves the meat charred on the outside, juicy on the inside. I love an extra pop of heat on wraps like these, and the house hot sauce did not disappoint. It took just a drop of the fiery relish to add a serious jolt to the bite, and I really appreciated the way it elevated the experience. Pickles were appropriately flavored, but very mild; I'd prefer them to have a more aggressive flavor profile, but this is just a minor complaint. So yes, Sincerely Syria is serving top notch, very satisfying Shawarma, and I look forward to heading back in before too long to try the chicken or Falafel, and to seeing this lovely couple again. It was suggested by the owner of Velvet to try the chicken wrap. Not a huge menu but what they have is flavorful. I ordered the 12" plate. It came with chicken wrap, French fries, "pickles" and garlic spread. I didn't try any extra garlic sauce. The wrap was tasty. I think some of the pickles were chopped up in the sauce? There was a crunch to the wrap. Oddly enough, I really liked the fries. My order was ready pretty quickly. By the time I took a few pictures it was ready. There was no one in line in front of me so my plate was prepared fresh. Walking by after eating at Velvet it was pretty busy inside and out. Inside was clean and very minimal table decor. Very disappointing experience with Sincerely Syria in Sherman Oaks. I ordered through DoorDash and unfortunately the food was not prepared properly. The fries were extremely undercooked, and the meat also seemed undercooked and was not something I felt comfortable eating. For the price I paid, I expected the food to be cooked properly and arrive in acceptable condition. I reported the problem through DoorDash, but I was not given a refund, which made the whole experience even more frustrating. Second time here because the first time we came, the restaurant posted an 11 am opening and they weren't even ready to serve food when we arrived after 11:00 am so we left. Our thought was to give it another shot and came later in the afternoon. Big mistake. We should've learned our lesson the first time. What's our thought? This place is a hard no. Walking in the second time and the first thing we experienced was the cashier had a resting you know what face and the shop wasn't even busy. Why is she so angry and bitter? I told the lady it was our first time in here and asked her if it was just chicken and beef to get her recommendation and she just rolled her eyes at me. Surprised by her reaction, I played it cool and continued to order 12" Chicken Wrap and 12" Beef Wrap. Once I ordered, we paid, was given a receipt and there was not a thank you to be heard - just silence. We walked to an open table and sat quietly as we waited for our food. In total, it was about a 15 minute wait. Sitting down, I forgot to get extra garlic sauce and pomegranate molasses so I waited until the food was ready to ask if they can put some in the bag. I asked the lady for the two condiments and she said the wraps don't come with any sauce and it'll be a dollar each. A dollar each?! Did you see the container of pomegranate molasses that I shared on Yelp? It's tiny! Either way, I ordered and paid since my wife requested it. Once we got home, the family sat down and tried the food. We bit into it without the additional condiments and with the condiments. The pomegranate molasses was really sour with a hint of sweetness and the garlic sauce just has a mild garlic flavor. Definitely not what our family is used to as we usually like the intense garlic flavor so this was a miss. The beef in the wrap was on the drier side and so was the chicken. Portions are small too for the price. Think two Taco Bell sized bean and cheese burritos for the 12" wraps. Was the food good? It was ok. Mind blowing? No. Would I come back? We enjoyed the french fries a lot. This is a small place with a friendly staff. The place is very clean, and we were relaxed. THIS PLACE IS PHENOMENAL. As a shawarma fan/lover, this is defenitly one of the best spots to grab in Los Angeles. I've gone to now the Hollywood and Sherman Oaks Lovations and they are both AMAZING. Picked up a chicken shawarma wrap up for lunch at this location and the service here was incredible. Servers were friendly and helpful. Once we ordered, our foot was out in 5 minutes? It was super fast and we appreciated that. For $20 bucks I got the small wrap, a drink, and a hummus and baklava so the prices are really good too. The chicken wrap was the star of the lunch. Great portion considering the price and SO FLAVORFUL. The garlic sauce was also a great addition to the wrap. Overall I will defenitly be back very soon. I was looking forward to trying a wrap, as it made an Instagram influencer's list of best LA wraps. Unfortunately I was disappointed from the tepid service to the food. The 6" chicken wrap is filling and the garlic paste great though unevenly spread. Some chicken pieces were too dry. One piece was so hard at first I mistook it for bone. The pickles were also sparse but gave much needed acid to counter the heavy garlic sauce. Something else like cucumbers, tomatoes or onions to also lighten the filling would balance the overall taste. The place is clean and the prices good. A 6" chicken wrap is $8.99 and the beef one a dollar more. Maybe a beef wrap is the better tasting choice? There's also a sizeable outdoor eating area. Both times I have stopped here to try the shawarma(once for the beef and the other for the chicken) the attitude I have received from the staff has been as if I've ruined their entire day by wanting to give them money. It was additionally off putting to see the note on their online menu about the Fries. I get if a place wants to be fully authentic. I respect that. But to give in and add one item to the menu as a side and be passive aggressive about it, combined with their in person attitude just makes this a place I know I will NEVER re-visit. Priced at ~$15, the value is decent, though I didn't feel like they were particularly generous with the meat portions (especially with the beef wrap). The chicken seemed to have significantly more substance, which is perhaps why I enjoyed it more. Needless to say, I left full and satisfied. They cut it into 8 pieces, so it's very convenient to enjoy. The shawarma meat is very tender, juicy and well marinated. I've been looking in many different Shawarma places for that authentic Syrian flavor and I couldn't find it anywhere except here. It's insane. Every bite took me back to Syria, to Mazza, to Zabadani, to Maliki... I asked the lovely lady there, Rabiah, to make it extra crispy, like how it is in Syria and she was more than happy to do so.
