The drinks are so cute, especially the ones with the bear ice! They also have some new coffee drinks. I really enjoyed both the rice and pasta dish. The sauces were good and added lots of flavor and the proteins were cooked well. I would skip the Fried Fish Ball. They were quite tough and topped with weird toppings that usually go on things like takoyaki. For dessert, I recommend that pretty strawberry toast. It was so crunchy and sweet with a nice cold scoop of ice cream. They also brought out a new dessert which was a peach shaved ice that was so refreshing and creamy. Loved the texture and the balance of sweet and fluffy. The best pineapple bun I've had near the NYU area. The Spicy Noodles were delicious. Broth has a nice kick to it and it's tasty and filling. Lots of seafood too. The rice with chicken comes with a Malaysian curry sauce and it's very flavorful. For next time, I'd get the egg without cheese but I'm sure many will enjoy that. While the food was pleasantly presented and the price point is fair for what you get, the food is ok. Service could be more organized, especially during busier times. I came on a weekday afternoon and it was surprisingly quite busy. There aren't many tables available so my group of 3 had to wait quite a while. They need to get their waitlist properly set up and ensure staff do a better job at seating guests promptly and fairly. Once tables became available (as folks finished eating), people did not abide by the line order and rushed to claim tables. Even folks or originally ordered takeout due to the long line decided to change their mind and get seated. This makes for a frustrating experience overall. Unpopular opinion, but I feel like social media really overhyped it for me. I came in on a random Thursday evening with a friend and we were able to get a table right away. We both had the slippery eggs over rice with chicken, which was quite good. I liked the curry sauce that came with it. I had the bear milk tea, which was pretty damn pricey and really only for the gram. The regular milk tea is just as good. We split the golden toast with ovaltine topping. This was the most bland toast I've ever had in my life. It just tasted like bread topped with ovaltine. I couldn't taste the toast flavor at all? Love this new spot! It's a high energy modern cha chaan teng. They have a few kiosks for you to order takeout if you are not planning on sitting down, which is very convenient. Most tables indoors (normal night) are 2 seaters. The enclosed garden (very warm, perfect for winter) has 4 seaters, but the tables and chairs are low. Tall crowds may have a problem fitting, but children and petite crowds are going to have a fantastic time. The foods are inexpensive and delicious. Their desserts like pineapple bun with ice cream and HK French toast really stood out for us. Drink wise, we really love the HK milk tea (so smooth!) and their coffee varieties (Jasmine, lime, and coconut are all bomb). Entree wise, love the slippery egg and beef pasta!! Gonna come back to try more items Some items I didn't 100% enjoy include the fried shumai and fried sausage. Fries are mid, but no one's in a cha chaan teng for that amirite . It's pretty difficult to have a meal in NYC that's not fantastic, like you have to go out of your way to land somewhere bad, but this meal was extremely mid. I've been to many cha can tings (HK style cafes) in my life and I know to expect simple comfort food, nothing fancy. I first discovered it from an IG reel raving about how the strawberry HK style French toast was their best dessert of 2023. It certainly looks appealing, a pink explosion and milk gushing out when you cut into it. But where's the strawberry flavor? And honestly I don't understand the liquid milk, because I'm used to condensed milk on my HK French toast. And the sad frozen lone strawberry they serve on the side...they couldn't have at least given a fresh one? The whole thing just tasted like it was fried in old oil. Not appetizing. The fried chicken with slippery egg rice was dece, and the curry added a touch of flavor. The pasta with tomato and beef was really unmemorable. Each dish came with one small piece of broccoli as garnish. Overall just a very mediocre meal. They did play good canto and mando pop songs but it was a touch too loud for a casual diner and we had to really yell over the music. Nice to see a cha Chan teng concept opening in this NYU area. While the menu is limited, it does offer some popular plates, like hk French toast (albeit not authentic as these is chocolate with peanuts, so remember to let staff know if any allergies) and sadly not much vegetarian options as entrees. I have no idea why we had to pay for the meal while we were still eating. It seemed like the staff had zero communication.
