While on a round trip to San Diego, this fun little town has so much to offer with various bars and restaurants along Mission Blvd. Single Fin caught our eye, and seemed like a chill bar & grill to try! As soon as you walk in you're greeted by the friendly bar tender, and are instructed to take a seat anywhere you'd like. The menu is available via QR code, and you order both your food and drinks at the bar. At the time we came in there weren't many people, but a crowd started gathering after about 30 minutes or so, which was nice! Our food came out - with a decent amount of wait time - and it looked great! We ordered a couple of cocktails from the menu as well, which we got right away. I had gotten something similar to an Espresso Martini, but the drink fell short in both the taste and the presentation. My beer battered fish tacos were good, but nothing extraordinary. I believed they lacked a bit of taste...perhaps seasoning? The jam burger on the other hand, extremely juicy and flavorful! The fries were nice and crispy & seasoned. Overall, the food and drink were a bit inconsistent, but it may also very well be the items I ordered. For that, I'm docking it one star, but again it may come down to my taste buds and previous items I've had from other grills. The fish in both the fried and grilled option lacked flavor; they tried to compensate with the toppings but even then, every bite was kind of just the same bleh taste. It was a Sunday afternoon when I went so it was pretty much empty. We sat at the bar and the service we received from Marcelle behind the bar was warm and friendly, efficient and attentive. I had really high hopes for this place as I found it on the recent Yelp Top 100 2025 restaurants in the country but it was a bust wouldn't recommend. Single Fin Surf Grill has a great beach vibe with an open patio and seats facing the main street. The staff was very friendly they have a full service bar with lots of great drinks and specials. I came in for seafood tacos especially since they were listed on Yelp Top 100. I was really disappointment. My friend got the beer battered fish tacos and said they were just fine. I got the Sriracha shrimp tacos and they were just meh. I got them with a corn tortilla and one of my tacos tortillas was on the grill long enough that it turned into a tortilla chip and it was difficult for me to eat. The shrimp was just fine nothing amazing to write home about. I was really underwhelmed. Part of me had great expectations given its listing in Yelp Top 100 but I was just left disappointed. Great staff and great place but the food was just sub-par especially in Pacific/Mission Beach where you can find better food around the corner. read more

I ordered take out. They said 15-20 minutes on the phone. It took nearly an hour- 3 times as long as they said-and my kids were extremely hungry. They weren't even particularly busy. There were like maybe 3 tables and a few people at the bar. Being generous- I'm guessing they got a few more takeout orders than usual. But I'm unclear why they wouldn't have adjusted the time they gave me on the phone if they knew they had just gotten other orders in. I would have gone somewhere else. The food was fine. However, the fish tacos were under seasoned and needed a sauce. They also forgot the chips that come with the tacos. Credit where credit is due: the fries were good and the onion rings were crispy. Amazing staff and food and vibe. The barman was super friendly. The vibe is fun and laid back. It clearly has a lot of regulars which is a good sign. The Sriracha shrimp tacos are amazing and huge. I live in LA. I know my tacos. These were excellent. I saw a review complaining about portion size and I can only imagine it is from someone who has to have 4 large meals a day as I can barely finish one taco let alone both of them. The flour tacos hold up well and don't collapse. There is PLENTY of shrimp in the taco, the person complaining about that must have expected a whole buffet size bowl of shrimp. The prices are realistic. This is right by the beach in a nice area in a tourist city. Honestly it feels that the ones complaining are used to taco bell portions and taco bell prices. I wanted to like this place that I found in Yelp's Top 100 restaurants in the country, since it is close by. We went on a Saturday night (2/22) and the place was quite empty (red flag?). There didn't appear to be a hostess or waitstaff, but there were tables to sit at. We gave an order to the bartender after seeing the menu on the wall that we passed on our way in. I thought that $17 for two fish tacos seemed a little much, since they came with nothing else, but the food was supposed to be fantastic so we got two orders. We added fries for an additional $5. Total after tax and tip, $49. Someone brings your food from the kitchen to you, so we never had a server. When the food comes out, the fries have seasoning salt, which is not listed on the menu. We had asked for the fries to be really well done, which they weren't so we were glad to see the new batch come out hot and crispier. That said, they looked like they came out of a bag, rather than being made fresh in house. They were mediocre. The fish tacos were so underwhelming. They were served in a cold tortilla; not just not heated, not even room temperature. The tortilla was on the cold side. The taco comes loaded with all kinds of stuff on top. When I dug down, the lack of fish was disappointing. Keep in mind, we got four tacos and fries for almost $50. Since we didn't have a server, when we needed something, we had to get up and ask the bartender. The food, service, and decor were all meh. I am floored that there are so many rave reviews. Maybe there has been a change in ownership or management, which would explain the empty room (it's a single room). Very disappointing experience. Portion sizes are quite large. Service is fast and friendly. Table was painfully uncomfortable. There's a metal strip around the perimeter of the table that makes it impossible to lean your arm on the table without doing damage. Fish and chips were not crispy. The breading was soft and the whole thing fell apart when you tried to pick it up. French fries were crispy. Not a tartar sauce fan but their version of tartar sauce wasn't bad. No cocktail sauce. Coke glass was always full. Ceviche was tasty although a little sweeter than I like. Not complaining. I'd order it again. Restaurant was reasonably clean, as was the bathroom. Parking is not cheap on this street. The little public parking lot costs over $16 for 2 hours. read more

Came to Fin's starving and on a mission for fish tacos. Parking was easy, with a paid public lot just a few feet away. Ambience during Christmas season is very charming. The National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation theme is fun and festive, with the entire bar decked out to the nines in vibrant Christmas decor. They have a decent amount of seating both inside and out. The staff is super friendly, hospitable, and easy to talk to. I'd ordered grilled fish tacos and a makeshift mock tail. Thanks to the help of one of the bartenders helping the other with the order, I was able to get a Beachside Bali minus the liquor. Grilled fish tacos were incredibly overpriced and flavorless at $16 for (2), while the mocktail was essentially an overpriced lemonade with no glam. On the mocktail, that's on me, as that's something off menu and an abnormal request, so I should've known better. My cousin's fish and chips were pretty delicious however; crisp, piping hot, with great texture. If it weren't for the friendly service, overall vibes, great music, and a taste of those fish & chips, I'd honestly be pretty bummed out since my meal wasn't it. read more

Given the name, I was expecting to have some good fish. Though filling, the battered fish tacos (2) and sriracha shrimp tacos (2) a house favorite were lacking in flavor. The tacos were 3/4 coleslaw and 1/4 meat. Very disappointing. The fries were basic, and dosed in too much salt. Maybe the burgers are better or maybe they just expect you to be 3 drinks in before enjoying their food. The waitress/hostess could have cared less about us. Maybe since we didn't order any drinks? It was basically DIY - seat yourself, get your own menu, come up to the counter to order.... Definitely kicking myself for going here and not somewhere else. read more

Teddy is, hands down, the best bartender I've ever had. From the moment I sat down, he made me feel welcome like a regular--even though it was my first time there. His drink recommendations were spot-on, his pours generous, and his attention to detail unmatched. He keeps the bar running smoothly while still taking the time to check in, chat, and make sure everyone's having a great time. After an afternoon of watching the girls paddle boarding with some friends we all decided to check out the local eateries. Mission Blvd is not part of my usual Venn diagram of SD haunts so I really wasn't sure what to expect at Single Fin. What I found was a mostly pleasurable experience. We arrived just before 6p for the Tuesday HH specials. Literally there only two patrons sitting in the patio. Once 6p hit it was interesting to watch the regulars drop in. The bartender who also served as cashier and server knew people by name and immediately struck up conversations yet still managed to pull his triple duty without pause. The place was so relaxed. TVs we're on mute, no loud music, and no wasted college kids. Just drink, eat, and talk story. =) Tuesday HH includes fish tacos. They were pretty good sized. The breading was crisp but a tad fried too long and I feel that the oil may have needed changing as there was a bit of a greasy aftertaste. Both kids went adventurous on me and ordered the signature nasi goreng, an Indonesian fried rice. One got shrimp, the other chicken. They liked the rice which came with a sunny side egg to mix into. No complaints on the proteins either. I did notice that they didn't finish the side of pork rinds. I took a bite and didn't feel too inspired either. Several beers on tap along with house cocktails. Insanely good fish tacos! This place was near our Airbnb so we headed over for dinner one evening. The fish tacos were out of this world delicious and Tony provided excellent service from behind the bar. Mom liked her salad, too! We came back the next morning for breakfast and were not disappointed!! For $3, you can get eggs, bacon, potatoes and toast!!!! Whaaaat? We each got the breakfast special and ordered the corn flake French toast to share. Everything was great! Can I just say that hat Tony is amazing?!? Mom is super short and walks with a cane so can't do barstools or high top tables. Instead of having us wait on a booth to open up, Tony bought a drink for a solo patron and asked him to move to the bar so we could have the booth.
