Sister Pie is great - and I love what they're all about: sister-bakers collectively creating delicious desserts. As a pie baker for my entire life, Sister Pie has been on my must-visits for almost as long as they've been open. I had the honey lemon merengue and my husband had a slice of the chocolate coconut pie. Both were great, though admittedly I love my great-grandmother's pie crust recipe a little bit more. Beautiful interior and totally amazing pie. They've got tons of plants everywhere and it always feels breezy and open even if it's cold outside, somehow. I've never stayed to work or dine in, but their seating area looks nice and well laid out for one or two people per party to hang out in. Their coffee is generally very fresh and good quality, and there's a good selection of sweeteners, milks, et al laid out. They also provide hand pies and other baked goods to various other coffee shops, so I tend to most often get their food from Germack and the like. Would recommend any of the savory hand pies, but particularly the squash one, if it's in season. Super convenient if you're in a hurry. read more

We visited Sister Pie on our last trip to Detroit, this place was around the corner from the Airbnb we were staying at, all I can say is Sister Pie knows their pies! They also have other pastries but their pies are on point. Make sure to get their early. We made the mistake of going in the afternoon and they were pretty much out of everything. Sister Pie is a little bakery on the corner of a residential neighborhood. There are a couple of tables inside, but there isn't much space. We had to duck around other customers to see the desserts available for purchase. We purchased a few products to sample. The coffee chess pie is amazing, and definitely the best item we purchased today. The lemon drop cookies were divine. The apple gouda sage pie was unique and rather good. Everyone wants to love a homey sounding place named " Sister Pie", and why not . At first, I expected to see some older African-American women, tuning out mouthwatering "down home southern delicacies " . Nope. Well how about a family of bakers who are sisters ? Whatever one may conger in the mind will probably not fit reality. Deception, maybe just a tiny bit. $30 for an imaginative pie, consisting of inharmonious ingredients , thick crusts and brick hard chocolates. Strange bedfellows that could never cross paths anywhere other than "Sister Pie". I purchased some lemon squares with actual Rosemary Leaves inside ! Sweet lemon and bitter rosemary , that desolves into a mouthful of dusty leaves is awful ! Detroit's food code says that if a venue sells fresh cooked food items, they must discard all unsold items at closing. These items must be sold as day-old, usually at a discounted price. No discounts (except a small one for seniors citizens ). I was in the store when I heard the clerk tell a women who asked about end of the day food discounts this : "we don't give discounts, if we have any leftovers, WE eat them ourselves". I was speechless ! As for the $4.50 slice of pie, all the clerk kept saying was " it's really good, it's really good !". It was Rubarb and Potato ! The lady just turned and walked out. I went to Sister Pie for the first time after a busy morning in Detroit. They make all of their pies from scratch and they had blue berry, lemon and a peach pie available that day. We ended up getting a slice of each to eat with dinner that evening. I also got a more savory spinach and potato pasty and it was so delicious! If you are in the area and love a good pastry, definitely stop in. The staff was friendly, the store was clean and they had a Hanson poster in the bathroom. They had many people chilling for what looked like several hours and I would bet they have a free Wifi situation also. There were a couple tables outside to sit at also. So excited to go there as I have friends who've been there and I received the cookbook for Christmas and love love love the story of its creation. Arrived around 1 pm on Thursday. Not a pie in sight. A friend and I ventured to Detroit for some pie and we were not disappointed! I had the apple butter custard and hers was chocolate and coconut. We both enjoyed our pies very much! She got a scone to go as well and I know there was jalapeño in it, not sure what else, but I tried some of that and it was very good. Stopped by Sister Pie this afternoon for a sweet treat with family visiting from out of town. I'd previously stopped in this past fall to pick up a Thanksgiving pre-order and forgot how cute this little bakery is! Grabbed a slice of the Banana Pete and the Chocolate Coconut to-go. Both flavors were great, although found the crust to be a bit tough. Both were also very rich, so I think they'd be excellent with a cup of coffee. Sadly no pies today on Christmas Eve's eve. Sold out within hours of opening. We picked up a buckwheat lavender scone which seemed a little over priced but was actually delicious! Fresh lavender seeds with every bite and a nice crunch glaze. Only Vegan option was their brownie, which was also delicious and not too sweet. The chocolate chip walnut cream cheese muffin wasn't very good. The cream cheese was all stuck on one side of the muffin where all the chocolate chips had migrated. I have not yelped in a while but I just had the most ah-maz-ing lunch and I had to tell someone!! Driving home from the Downriver area I was STARVING and trying to think about where to stop for lunch. I had sent my husband to Sister Pie to pick up some goodies in the past but never stopped in myself. I decided to make a bit of a detour and I am so glad I did. Sister Pie is in the West Village area of Detroit. The shop is adorable and the display case is filled with delicious, unique sweets. They also have a featured soup or salad of the day. Today was a roasted carrot, sumac, rye berries, scallions with a dollop of yogurt on top. This soup was fabulous. Super filling and just perfection on the cold winter Detroit day. I opted for a mug and wished I would have gotten a bowl! Pie. Of course I got pie!!! I brought home a slice of the malted lime and a slice of banana for the husband. I know their signature is the salted maple but I just don't love it. The malted lime? OH EM GEE. The pie was tart and not too sweet and the pie crust was perfectly done. I just finished my slice and I am contemplating getting back in my car and driving back downtown for some more! PLEASE keep this on your menu!!!!!! The moral of the story is: Sister Pie is not just for Pie! Check out the soups! Check out the Salads! And of course - make sure to get a slice. I went to sister pie today with my parents after I have talked about it for months! I was very excited. We arrived, there was one person in line in front of us and then it was our turn. They were out of most things, but that was okay since it was late morning. However, the ladies were in such a hurry and did not give us much time to think about what we want. There was NO ONE in line behind us!!!!! I asked all the questions I wanted and felt that it was my fault that I was asking for things that were sold out, and finally I had to be like, "this is my first time here". Atmosphere in the store was actually nice, lots of people coming in and out. Cranberry pie was mediocre. My savory pie was good, however it didn't fill me up at all. On thanksgiving's day I stopped by Sister Pie and picked up a Brandy Pecan pie for a whopping $32.00 to take to my sister's house. Needless to say I decided to keep the pie and was not pleasantly blown away by the taste. I am a baker and I come from a line of great cooks, This pie was just plain old awful, it had no taste and the Brandy was too over powering. The pie also crumbled when sliced and the consistency was loose. I truly LOVE this little family-run pie shop. I followed their journey from the very beginning on Instagram when they first opened the shop. The pie was super duper, heavenly DELICIOUS. Their crust has become my gold standard for judging pie crusts from now on: flaky, sturdy, not at all soggy and very buttery. The filling is always on point: not overly sweet, just the right consistency and interesting to get above all of the standard pie fillings out there. I introduced this place to a bunch of friends, and so far everyone has been loving it. The shop is very cute and filled with quirky characters of everyone who works there. As you enter the bakery, smell of the baked goods consumes you. Beautifully displayed pies right in front of you. They sell pies, cookies, coffees, breakfast and lunch. They are focused on the natural ingredients and come up with seasonal flavors. Their unique menu consists of the beautifully combined flavors and the variety is just extra ordinary. I had ordered the "Salted Maple Pie". The salt and maple were perfectly balanced and the dough was perfect . I am a bakery person and trust me that one bite of the Pie gave me goosebumps. Damn..... Went on Sunday morning. You walk in and are assaulted by smells and sights that make you want to consume everything. After very difficult internal struggles, I decided on the lemon poppy seed muffin, which my daughter also got. My wife got the BananaPete pie. We grabbed some cool mugs out of the cabinet, got our coffee, and went to work. Quite possibly the best muffin i have ever had. Could only eat half due to its size. This thing was insane. The banana pie tasted like heaven. I ate myself sick . Very proud of myself. And just because I have no self control, grabbed a couple double chocolate cookies and a brownie (gluten free!!) on the way out. These will not last the day. The interior is cute and hipster friendly. The wait staff was very pleasant. It was not crowded at all on a Sunday morning.
