My friend and I ordered both the roasted pork belly and roasted duck dishes. The roasted pork belly was better in flavor, but both meats lacked in quality. I would skip out here and just make the drive to Bellaire/Chinatown!

Do your research and trust the more recent reviews that have been posted up since change in ownership over the last year. This place just ain't it. I was hopeful so I still gave it a shot since it would've been nice to find a spot within the inner loop that serves up good Chinese BBQ, but I was left extremely disappointed and my partner ended up sick to her stomach. Roast duck 2/5 I've had a lot of roast duck growing up as it's a staple dish within my family, I wasn't impressed at all. Superficial flavor without any penetration, no crisp skin, and served lukewarm. The duck meat was moist though so that's the only reason I didn't rate it 1/5. I've had so much better in Houston and would not come back. Service and ambiance 1/5 Sooo many strikes. 1) The lady working up front was straight up rude and racist to black patrons which left a sour taste in my mouth. Even the way she interacted with me... a fellow Asian... I just felt unwelcome as if I were a bother. 2) The tables were extremely sticky. 3) They were serving hot tea in flimsy disposable plastic cups which is a no no as it may result in plastic leaching. Some other people asked for foam or paper cups which they didn't have to offer. 4) They were doing routine sweeping around us as we were eating. I'm okay with that type of behavior if it's a few tables away or near closing time to give us a clue to hurry up and rush out, but otherwise please refrain, I don't need dirt and dust flying up into my already sad food.

Solid for Chinese bbq for midtown. Doesn't beat the iconic spots on Bellaire but the lunch special is definitely worth its value. A hefty large to go container filled with a simple fried rice with stir fried cabbage or bok choy topped with your choice of two meats. All of the options are so flavorful you can't go wrong even if you don't choose the Barbecue. I've tried a decent amount of the meat and in order my ranking would probs be: Spicy Ribs, Singapore Chicken, Char Siu, Roast Pork then Salt and Pepper Shrimp followed by everything else. Note: I have gotten cold roasted pork/char siu which was a little disappointing but I've had the same meal hot and it was so much better.

Came by for lunch with a friend recently. It looks like the ladies and the previous owners are gone and new owners are in; usually this isn't a great sign. The previous ladies have been holding down the fort since I first visited Siu Lap. The menu hasn't seemed to change much except that the menu prices all got whited out and increased 20%. The meat on display look similar; I think the flavors and meat quality may have gone down slightly; the higher prices definitely hurt the value proposition of their lunch plate.

After a change in ownership through the last year, it's been a slippery slope (#1) of mishaps and disappointing experiences to the point where this update needed to be written. Growing pains come with the territory when there's a changing of the guard, but the only consistency has been the mediocrity of the foods. Price adjustments and service snafus aside, I think the main issue has been the execution. Something is off with the seasoning or perhaps something to do with the preparation of the meats. The roast pig is less succulent and more dry, despite the crispy skin. There is also something to be said about the bbq pork, which has seemingly become an average if not bland version of what was once succulent and nicely charred. The same goes for the roast duck, which is still oily, but considerably less memorable. Another strike is the fact there is no one that takes orders in Canto (#2) anymore. This wouldn't be an issue if the main offerings weren't siu mei, a Cantonese specialty. Mandarin is not an issue on this end, but there is a considerable lapse for the community that it represents. It's not different than showing up to a Mexican restaurant only to find out that no one speaks Spanish. This is not the update I would want to post, but this is the new reality for what was once the most legit option for Cantonese BBQ in Houston. Siu Lap City was one of the remnants of the previously thriving Chinese enclave in Midtown, which is now looking more bleak than ever. ___________ (#1) downward. (#2) Or moreover, Vietnamese.

Came here towards the end of business hours which might've been a mistake... everything on my plate was lukewarm. The flavors of the meat were good but it did taste a bit stale. The pork belly is much better than the duck in my opinion. The ginger scallion sauce is a must try though if you're coming here. I wish they'd keep the quality of their food consistent throughout the day though!

This place never disappoints especially when you're looking for a quick cheap bite. I'm hungry now just thinking of it. Might be a lil greasy but what do you expect. The food is always flavorful!

TLDR - probably the only Chinese bbq place inside the loop. Still your best bet unless you wanna go to Chinatown. Food still good, but not the same as in the past. Been coming to Siu lap city for a few years now. We're getting older so we try not to overindulge in Chinese bbq especially the char Siu and roast pork, but when we want it this is where we go when we don't want to drive all the way to Chinatown. The place is situated in a strip with predominantly Asian businesses. There's plenty of parking on the parking lot and parking garage. It's a simple set up inside. You see the bbq meats hanging with a few side options. They have the prices listed on the wall and you order on the counter. Service in the past has been fine, although recently I noticed it's different people at the counter. We ordered the roast pork, bok choy and some salt pepper shrimp just to add some variety.. The pork was good, although some dry pieces here and there - definitely didn't have this issue before. The bok choy was ok. The salt pepper shrimp was flavorful but a little too greasy for me - still edible though as we finished it all! We didn't try the char shui, duck or any orher meat but I'm afraid that the rumor of the change of ownership might be true just based on our most recent visit. Overall I am a little sad about the noticeable change in quality, although it probably won't stop me from coming back for convenience.Still nice to have a Chinese bbq place in midtown, just wish the old owners would take it over again.

Lunch specials with tons of food for under $12? Count me in! (And that's the large). The duck, pork belly, bbq pork, are all so delicious. I think this spot deserves a lot more spotlight and love for being the delicious community staple that it is. Tucked away in a corner you may just pass it up without noticing it's there. But once you try it, you'll want to come back as soon as you can! The parking is easy and the prices are incredibly reasonable. Nothing stopping you from coming unless you hate delicious Chinese bbq, and I highly doubt that's you.

I was in the big city earlier today to take advantage of something complementary downtown when it occurred to me that Siu Lap City in Midtown had been calling out to me for a very long time. With Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month almost ending, I embarked on an impromptu mini food crawl that started at a fairly new Filipino restaurant and concluded here. It was more than three months ago that I tried to eat at SLC, but was met with locked doors because the owners and staff were off for Lunar New Year. So, during my first real visit, I worked on a small lunch special consisting of char siu pork, kimchi, and rice. Humans make mistakes, and mine was getting chili oil paste on the pork when the kimchi was already there. Simply put, the meal set my mouth on fire. *Facepalm then laughs* Still, I liked it nonetheless with the generous helping of hot, freshly cooked rice and the succulent entrée of which the flavor was enhanced by its spicy sidekicks. Should I come back here, I need to tell the pretty woman at the register to just lace my order with duck sauce just to be safe. SLC reminds me of the Chinese BBQ joints that were ubiquitous in Houston's former Chinatown i.e. present-day EaDo back in the day. My parents used to do their grocery shopping there, and we sometimes had lunch at one of them. And you know an ethnic eatery serves authentic fare when there are more people of that particular ethnicity in the place. You can place SLC in that category.

    Yes, several 2-4 people tables.

The lunch specials are available all day on Tuesday - Sunday. They are closed on Monday.

    How's the wait and parking?

Parking sucks. I came at 5 pm Friday and parking lot was packed. Luckily I got the to go only parking spot. Otherwise try the shady smelly parking garage

This is cafeteria style with you ordering and your order is sliced and plated right in front of you. We went around the corner to the bar area and sat inside. That was really nice since the main restaurant was packed. We got 2 of the 2 meat and 2 side plates. I got the turkey and jalapeño cheddar sausage with Mac n cheese and potato salad. Everything was delicious. The turkey was so moist and tender. The sausage was Smokey and spicy. The Mac n cheese was super cheesy and the potato salad had a lot of flavor. The BBQ sauce provided was too spicy for me, but that didn't matter. My husband got the brisket and pulled pork with green beans and the elote. The brisket was super tender and flavorful. The pulled pork was Smokey and tender. The elote was really good. I didn't care for the green beans, but my husband liked them. Really enjoyed this spot. My experience here is why I tend to not frequent BBQ places, I hate being disappointed. The barbecue sauce (the signature and regular) were not good at all. Neither tasted like BBQ sauce. One tasted like tomato sauce with seasoning and the other tasted like a vinegary Tabasco sauce. The brisket was okay, nothing super impressive but no complaints. The queso might have been the most egregious issue (after the BBQ sauce) imagine paying $11 for tasteless, unimpressive, liquid cheese. Nothing in it but cheese and prayers. Adding the brisket (1/4lb for ~$9) along with a variety of other seasonings, made it okay. Ironically, reheating it after a few hours made it actually taste a bit better (enough to justify the price? Absolutely not). The mac and cheese was equally tasteless. One thing I think the Pit Room does EXCEPTIONALLY well is making pickles! These were delicious, seriously I'd go back just for the pickles (only the pickles).

Our order didn't actually take that long. Or maybe it took a little while and we didn't mind waiting. Either way, it wasn't that bad! Luckily it's located in a shopping area so there's always parking. My main gripe is that they close at 7pm. I'm sure there's a good reason for that but I've wanted to try it multiple times before but they've been closed! I ended up going with the infamous brisket and fried rice. The brisket was super tender - I was able to pull it apart with my fork. I typically shy away from brisket because usually it's tough. But this was delicious - tender and had a nice smoky flavor. Not overwhelming or too salty. The rice had a great flavor too. There were chunks of meat in that as well and the rice had a nice smoky flavor. Not too salty or greasy. It also came with some accoutrements - pickled onions, fresh pickled cucumbers, jalapeños, bbq sauce and bread. The cucumbers and onions stole the show - very fresh and refreshing. We were surprised at the pickled onions - they were soo good! Overall - worth the hype! I'll definitely be back to try ribs, chicken or pulled pork sandwich. I heard everything is good here!!

I'm viet and imo that's the best way to pickle anything. Restaurant clean, service friendly and very fast. You can tell they are a neighborhood favorite, so many people came in after us to pick up and dine in! Only thing to "improve" is it was a little warm in the restaurant. Not sure if the ac was struggling bc of this Texas heat or what but other than that, food was excellent and we definitely will be back. Highly recommend!

You can ask to see the piece of rib before they cut it for you and they will happily oblige (patrons behind you might not be so thrilled with that move, but they'll live). Sides were excellent as were the mashed potatoes with white gravy on the side, green beans that were just tender enough, but also a bit crunchy. Perfect. They were seasoned with pork, so if that's not your thing, you might want to skip it. We also ordered their shareable onion rings, easily enough for three people that were huge, hot, and crispy. Let's get this out of the way, some of their prices are a little up there, but if you're anything like me, and don't frequent BBQ places often, it's a rare but enjoyable treat. Sometimes you have to splurge and live a little. Also, they have their regular sauce on tables, but you now have to ask the cashier for their sublime coffee BBQ sauce. Don't be shy, ask. It's worth it. Oh, pro tip: If you want beef ribs, the 'plate' is actually cheaper and a better deal than 'by the pound', so save a little money and get two sides.

The restaurant is cute and they do their best to keep the service consistent throughout the entire visit. The BBQ was a little dry but good. The disappointing part of the trip were the sides. 95% of the sides had pork in them which made the entire wait not worth it. This was my first time visiting and it will be my last.

Visiting from out of town and decided to give this place a try. I was greeted as soon as I walked in the door. I was not sure what I wanted to try, so Sam, the owner, gave me a sampling of everything; brisket sandwich, spare rib, potato, salad, coleslaw, beans, macaroni and cheese, jambalaya rice, and french fries. Everything tasted better than expected, especially the french fries, as few BBQ restaurants are able to get these just right. I will definitely return tomorrow to try something new. Definitely ordering the macaroni and cheese and potato salad again. Special thanks to Sam, the owner, who definitely took care of me. He knew I was from out of town, but treated me like a long time customer, which I greatly appreciate. Give this place a try... You will not be disappointed!

The counter service keeps things moving while the food speaks for itself. The brisket was exactly what you'd hope for: a pronounced bark, a rendered fat cap, and slices that held together until they were pulled apart. The surprise for me was the brisket taco. Instead of feeling like a gimmick, it showcased the meat in a different way, balancing smoke, richness, and fresh toppings without masking the brisket. Good barbecue restaurants know their sides matter just as much as the meat. The mac and cheese was creamy, the sausage had a satisfying snap, and the house barbecue sauce complemented rather than covered the smoke. If you're visiting Houston, this is the kind of place that reminds you why Texas barbecue has earned its reputation. Efficient counter service, excellent brisket, and enough menu variety to keep you coming back.

Also ordered turkey sandwich and 2 tacos , one beef and one pulled pork. My favorite thing was the fixings bar. I seriously felt fomo when I saw the food being made. The portions seem small to me. We enjoyed the food though. I did not like the pulled pork taco, maybe because it got soggy. I would like to try some other items and also their dessert.
