I really hoped they would at least be decent quality, if not as good as the original owners, especially since they are the only Chinese roast meat option in Downtown anymore. But no... The cleanliness on the last two visits killed all desire to return. On one of the two occasions, I ordered a whole duck as part of my order. While chopping the duck, one of the leg quarters fell on the floor. I happened to be looking right at the guy as it happened. He stopped, slowly peered AROUND the hanging meats to see if I was looking. We made eye contact. He reluctantly sliced off a leg quarter from a hanging duck. Yeah, I know what you were going to do if I wasn't looking. The second time (I can't believe I went back after that duck leg incident), another fella was grabbing the styrofoam to-go boxes to package up an order. Two floated to the ground. I don't care how it hit the floor, the boxes hit a dirty floor. He picked them up, placed them right back on the clean stack of boxes to be used. If that's how they operate out in the open, I don't want to know how they operate behind the doors. That's a hard no for me. read more

Finally found a good Asian place in Midtown! The roasted duck was authentic (skin separated from meat) and tasty. Veggies soaked in garlic. Their "duck drippings" sauce is an umami bomb. The only thing about this place is that it's pretty much only available for lunch. It's the second time I've ordered CBBQ for a party and both times I had great friendly customer service. I don't mind driving 30 minutes for good roast pork. I no longer go to Chinatown, which is an additional 15 minute drive. I always order 3lbs of roast pork, a whole roast duck, and 2lbs bbq pork. I hadn't seen a CBBQ place offering spicy tendon and spicy tripe. I had to try it so I only got a pound of each. They were both so good! The spiciness and texture of the tendon and tripe were a perfect balance. It was so good that I'll order more than a pound next time. So far both times I ordered the roast pork wasn't mostly fat. The flavor was good and the skin perfectly crispy and not greasy. The duck wasn't anything out of the norm. It could be more flavorful, but still decent. The same goes for the bbq pork. I was hopeful so I still gave it a shot since it would've been nice to find a spot within the inner loop that serves up good Chinese BBQ, but I was left extremely disappointed and my partner ended up sick to her stomach. Roast duck 2/5 I've had a lot of roast duck growing up as it's a staple dish within my family, I wasn't impressed at all. Superficial flavor without any penetration, no crisp skin, and served lukewarm. The duck meat was moist though so that's the only reason I didn't rate it 1/5. I've had so much better in Houston and would not come back. Service and ambiance 1/5 Sooo many strikes. 1) The lady working up front was straight up rude and racist to black patrons which left a sour taste in my mouth. Even the way she interacted with me... a fellow Asian... I just felt unwelcome as if I were a bother. 2) The tables were extremely sticky. 3) They were serving hot tea in flimsy disposable plastic cups which is a no no as it may result in plastic leaching. A hefty large to go container filled with a simple fried rice with stir fried cabbage or bok choy topped with your choice of two meats. All of the options are so flavorful you can't go wrong even if you don't choose the Barbecue. I've tried a decent amount of the meat and in order my ranking would probs be: Spicy Ribs, Singapore Chicken, Char Siu, Roast Pork then Salt and Pepper Shrimp followed by everything else. Came by for lunch with a friend recently. It looks like the ladies and the previous owners are gone and new owners are in; usually this isn't a great sign. The previous ladies have been holding down the fort since I first visited Siu Lap. The menu hasn't seemed to change much except that the menu prices all got whited out and increased 20%. The meat on display look similar; I think the flavors and meat quality may have gone down slightly; the higher prices definitely hurt the value proposition of their lunch plate. read more

After a change in ownership through the last year, it's been a slippery slope (#1) of mishaps and disappointing experiences to the point where this update needed to be written. Growing pains come with the territory when there's a changing of the guard, but the only consistency has been the mediocrity of the foods. Price adjustments and service snafus aside, I think the main issue has been the execution. Something is off with the seasoning or perhaps something to do with the preparation of the meats. The roast pig is less succulent and more dry, despite the crispy skin. There is also something to be said about the bbq pork, which has seemingly become an average if not bland version of what was once succulent and nicely charred. The same goes for the roast duck, which is still oily, but considerably less memorable. Another strike is the fact there is no one that takes orders in Canto (#2) anymore. This wouldn't be an issue if the main offerings weren't siu mei, a Cantonese specialty. Mandarin is not an issue on this end, but there is a considerable lapse for the community that it represents. It's not different than showing up to a Mexican restaurant only to find out that no one speaks Spanish. This is not the update I would want to post, but this is the new reality for what was once the most legit option for Cantonese BBQ in Houston. Came here towards the end of business hours which might've been a mistake... everything on my plate was lukewarm. The flavors of the meat were good but it did taste a bit stale. The pork belly is much better than the duck in my opinion. The ginger scallion sauce is a must try though if you're coming here. TLDR - probably the only Chinese bbq place inside the loop. Still your best bet unless you wanna go to Chinatown. Food still good, but not the same as in the past. Been coming to Siu lap city for a few years now. We're getting older so we try not to overindulge in Chinese bbq especially the char Siu and roast pork, but when we want it this is where we go when we don't want to drive all the way to Chinatown. The place is situated in a strip with predominantly Asian businesses. There's plenty of parking on the parking lot and parking garage. It's a simple set up inside. You see the bbq meats hanging with a few side options. They have the prices listed on the wall and you order on the counter. Service in the past has been fine, although recently I noticed it's different people at the counter. We ordered the roast pork, bok choy and some salt pepper shrimp just to add some variety.. The pork was good, although some dry pieces here and there - definitely didn't have this issue before. The bok choy was ok. The salt pepper shrimp was flavorful but a little too greasy for me - still edible though as we finished it all! We didn't try the char shui, duck or any orher meat but I'm afraid that the rumor of the change of ownership might be true just based on our most recent visit. Overall I am a little sad about the noticeable change in quality, although it probably won't stop me from coming back for convenience.Still nice to have a Chinese bbq place in midtown, just wish the old owners would take it over again. read more

Like many who use to frequent this place before the new owner, it was a delicious hidden gem in midtown Houston for Cantonese BBQ. However, with the new owner, the quality is barely edible at best. While going early at 10am to try the items as "fresh" as possible, both the duck and bqq pork were dried. The roast duck itself lacked any seasoning as if they roasted with no salt or any of the spices typical of this dish. The bbq pork lack any of the "char" you come to expect of Char Sui, as if they just pan fried the pork. I won't be coming here again and even more sadly; there are no other options in the area close besides Chinatown. read more

I think this spot deserves a lot more spotlight and love for being the delicious community staple that it is. Tucked away in a corner you may just pass it up without noticing it's there. But once you try it, you'll want to come back as soon as you can! The parking is easy and the prices are incredibly reasonable. Another customer came in to pickup a whole roasted pig and was grossed out when a roach crawled out to the box it was sitting in. Used to eat at the original restaurant when it was in Hue Houng (not sure I'm spelling it correctly) supermarket tucked in a corner of the store and it was excellent and cheap back in the 90's. The Mom and Dad ran the business there then moved just south of downtown - it was called Long Sing. They moved from there to Sui Lap City and the food was as good as ever. I retired in 2023 so didn't go there for a couple years and when I did, I was disappointed not only to find that they had sold the restaurant but also disappointed in the new owner's food. I was in the big city earlier today to take advantage of something complementary downtown when it occurred to me that Siu Lap City in Midtown had been calling out to me for a very long time. With Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month almost ending, I embarked on an impromptu mini food crawl that started at a fairly new Filipino restaurant and concluded here. It was more than three months ago that I tried to eat at SLC, but was met with locked doors because the owners and staff were off for Lunar New Year. So, during my first real visit, I worked on a small lunch special consisting of char siu pork, kimchi, and rice. Humans make mistakes, and mine was getting chili oil paste on the pork when the kimchi was already there. Simply put, the meal set my mouth on fire. *Facepalm then laughs* Still, I liked it nonetheless with the generous helping of hot, freshly cooked rice and the succulent entrée of which the flavor was enhanced by its spicy sidekicks. Should I come back here, I need to tell the pretty woman at the register to just lace my order with duck sauce just to be safe. SLC reminds me of the Chinese BBQ joints that were ubiquitous in Houston's former Chinatown i.e. present-day EaDo back in the day. My parents used to do their grocery shopping there, and we sometimes had lunch at one of them. And you know an ethnic eatery serves authentic fare when there are more people of that particular ethnicity in the place. You can place SLC in that category. read more

Parking at the ground level can be a challenge, but there are always spots in my experience if you drive up the ramp to the rooftop. Siu Lap is an underrated gem for Cantonese BBQ! They have all the classic Cantonese BBQ options - roast pork, bbq pork, roast duck, soy sauce chicken, and cold braised chicken as well as braised beef tendon and braised tripe. We tried two of the large rice plates that came with 2 meat options each, rice (steamed or fried), and a vegetable side. The BBQ pork and roast pork were my favorites, but the roast duck was solid too. The BBQ pork was really flavorful, not as caramelized on the outside as I'm used to but pretty good and slightly sweet. The roast pork had a great crispy skin and juicy interior. We tried the bok choy for the vegetable side; it was nice for a lighter bite between all the meat. The taste, portion, and price were all amazing, and I will definitely recommend this restaurant to others! The inside of the restaurant has a few tables for dining in. The atmosphere is very casual. We were in the area and decided to try out this Chinese roasted meat spot. The exterior and interior were very nondescript. So, we just ordered and picked up their whole roasted duck, which had a great flavor and overall texture. But, their duck meat wasn't as moist and juicy compared to Sinh Sinh in Chinatown. On the other hand, this spot's roast duck was slightly less expensive and they accepted credit/debit cards if your order was over $20 (Sinh Sinh only accepts cash). Overall, if you live in the Midtown area and it's too far of a drive to Chinatown, than Siu Lap City is a great spot to get your roasted duck fix. read more

SLC is located next door to Pho Saigon in Milam. I usually come in after eating pho and order a plate to take home and by then there isn't much selection of protein options. However yesterday I came in around 10:30 am to better my chances and was lucky everything was fully stocked. I got the large lunch plate special with crispy pork belly and bbq roasted pork on fried rice with a side of bok choy and chili oil. I also ordered a small broccoli veg stir fry and small order of their chili wings. I had an awesome lunch which really hit the spot after coming home from Miami. The service is good, the ladies are helpful and confirm with you what you're ordering/wanting and let you know if they don't have more of any particular item. It seems like a family run spot as they are pretty quick and efficient. On this particular day they half chicken leg quarters, chicken curry, mapo tofu, braised tendon, beef tripe, fried beef ribs, and sweet and sour pork to choose from as well if you don't care for the hanging items. The interior is pretty small with maybe 10 tables. Service is just straight to the point. They take and fill your orders. Nothing more. Nothing less. I always stick with my usual, which is the roasted pork belly, char siu, and bok choy over fried rice. The portions are large so I always end up taking half to-go.
