I like to come by and pick up their small sliced cakes whenever I'm craving some "healthy" desserts (healthy in the sense that it's lighter and contains much less sugar compared to the American desserts). This allows me to satisfy my sweet tooth without feeling too bad about the sugar and the calories. They have multiple locations, but this one is more convenient for me. The bakery also contains a restaurant inside for you to order normal food, mostly breakfast items though. They have a large variety of different pastries, buns, cookies, cakes to choose from, and all are relatively cheap. Everything is individually packaged, which is great for germ prevention. Our favorites were the giant macarons, the taro ( real taro not the dyed purple stuff) tulip, and the moon cake pineapple and date. My mouth was watering before I even picked up a tray to grab the goodies off the shelf. It was a Tuesday afternoon and the little shop was filled with people, hate to imagine what it looks like on weekends. The slice of black forest cake was so moist and flavorful, but not overwhelmingly sweet or rich. The curry pork bun was delicious and not oozing with grease. However, when I went to check out, the lady at the cashier was being rude. There was a white family before me. She smiled a lot and kept saying thank you for visiting her store. And then when I came to check out, her attitude completely changed. She grabbed my breads and then say something in Chinese. I was confused at first and kept looking at her. She repeated it one more time and that's time I could guess that she gave me total price. But obviously I didn't understand what she said. Then a young man showed up, maybe her son. He said sorry to me and let me know how much they were. Since it was such a bad impression, I don't think I would ever come back again. WHERE DO I BEGIN. First of all, my love and appreciation for bakeries (of the sweet and non-sweet) is immense. Six Ping definitely met all of my expectations for an Asian (Chinese? Taiwanese?) bakery. Their breads are soft (hopefully meaning they are freshly baked) and the textures are just right. The ratio of filling to dough (especially for their Taro buns) are just right. They so far have the best sponge cake that I've been able to find in Houston's Chinatown. The prices are incredibly cheap considering the quality and freshness of their products. Their bread selection is enormous considering the small size of the store, and they have all their basic breads down to a T. I know my family in particular are not a fan of super super sweet desserts, so Six Ping's level of sweetness if very suiting for someone who can't stand too much sugar. I want to actually give 4.5 stars, because they aren't perfect. The Durian sponge cake, although really able to deliver the Durian flavor, seems a little fake (aka they most likely use a flavoring instead of the real Durian, I think). Their decorative kid appealing breads (like the really cute crab or turtle shaped ones) are really dry and lack flavor. In other words, if you're here, I would go for the basics (i.e. the red bean bun, the taro bun, the bo-lo bun). Some of their more exciting items are really great too, but buy those experimentally (and not in bulk) unless you're absolutely sure they're super good - which, hey, given Six Ping's reputation, may just be the case. :) read more

I've only tried the sweet selections and they were all great. They're all reasonable in price and taste great. I only had one problem in that the labelling of the different pastries were difficult to determine which was which because there would be two different kinds of pastries on one tray and it is hard to tell which one is which since they aren't individually labelled and customers would put the pastries back on the wrong shelf. I go to six ping all the time but this location is horrible service. She tried rushing us out when we paid. We stepped in the store at 4:45 and we knew they close at 5pm. But we knew what we want, so made it quick within 5minutes. There were 4 people came in after us. The order was $4.50. I gave her $5 and told her I have 50 cents. The old lady told me "no, I don't want too many cents" and lay 50 cents on the table for me. It's not a big deal but what is it? What kind of business that doesn't take a quarter? I was out hanging with one of my Asian friends on Saturday and we ended up need 6 Ping. We were on the beltway and she had hey we're by Dun Huang I want to go to 6 ping. I'm like girl I don't want to play no ping pong lets keep going. As she exited she explained that it was Asian bakery I had to try. On my first visit there I was spoiled because we arrived super early and had our pick of every item and we're the only people in the store. I basically got what she suggested and OMG this is where my love for Asian desserts began. I've had the sponge cakes (I've also heard someone call them Vietnamese cupcakes.) The chocolate was my favorite but vanilla was good also. My other favorite item are the small oval cheese cakes. Everything is so light and airy with an ever so mild sweetness. Its a welcome break from the overly sweet American desserts. My second visit was at 1PM and not only was the place teeming but they were out of several items. They were shelling them out as fast as they could be just couldn't keep up with the revolving door of patrons so arrive early. The place itself is no frills and I don't think the cashier said one word either time I visited. They not rude, more so extremely timid. Okay, so the problem is: when baked items are reasonably priced I tend to stock up. Not crazy stock up, like there's a Hurricane entering the Gulf stock up, but rather a vast swath of variety stock up. Like a cornucopia or a buffet. I have lots of freezer space, so I'll generally freeze most of the baked items, then when I need a bit of a pick-me-up, let whatever it is sit on the counter for a spell (five minutes), then devour. Not directly on the counter, on a cute little plate which is sitting on the counter. My problem with Six Ping is that I didn't get enough blueberry cream buns. It's a mixture of cream cheese and blueberries that was piped into a giant bun. I only got one; I should have gotten the entire tray. It's giant, like a mini-bun pie, so it lasted me for a few days. Really, I should stop there. That's all you really need. There were a large number of items with western flavors and fruits (aforementioned awesome bun, almond, cinnamon roll, brownie sandwiches, and so on), but with an twist. Mainly the style and the breading. I got an assortment of things, but really the only ones worth mentioning were the blueberry cream buns and the red bean buns (with black sesame seeds on top). What didn't I like? Ha! It's hit or miss this whole grab a tray and create your cornucopia of goodies. Just go. You'll grab some winners and some losers. It's like going to a panaderia, talking to people at a networking event, or getting drunk and buying random songs "you have to listen to right now!!!" off of Amazon. I've never visited Hong Kong but it rates as one of the most densely populated places on Earth. Broom closets in America are veritable palaces compared to some of the teensy-tiny shoeboxes that pass for housing there. This place is tiny as noted in other reviews. But, it may be "palatial" in Chinese bakery measurements, clocking in at around 100 square feet. I lucked out and visited on a quiet Fifth of July (no mobs).* The bakery goods are on the perimeter shelves with a center double rack island. Each item is individually wrapped - the prices seem a bit higher than other places but, after sampling the goods, are reasonable. I tried out the coconut and cheese topped bread ($1.25) and the raisin bread with dry cream item ($1.25). The coconut and cheese bread was an interesting taste combination - I figured that, since I like each component, I'd like the blend. I was right. The coconut lost its taste punch to the cheese as I wolfed down the serving but it was still good. It reminded me of a Filipino pastry called ensaymada. The raisin bread with dry cream was not such a winner; it had an interesting orange glaze on it but the dry cream was half true to its name: dry and powdery, it didn't have much of a creamy flavor. I ate it over the sink since the powdery filling was getting everywhere and the last thing I wanted besides a bland experience was having to clean up after it. Overall, Six Ping is cutesy, tiny, and welcoming but the jury is still out on the pastry since they are only batting .500 with me. I'll give them another chance. * While there were no mobs, I still am amazed at how my people are such bad drivers. On the way home, an Asian lady was driving her minivan so slowly - she definitely wasn't "driving it like she stole it." Heck, she was driving it like she had a heavy mortgage on it. read more

Coming here is like the Asian version of going to Willy Wonka's Chocoloate Factory or a zoophilia going to a farm. Everything looks, smells and tastes great! Of late, they've significantly raised their prices by 10-20%; which may sound a lot, but on relative terms, it's like $0.20 per item. You, the consumer, get the last laugh. Hahaha! They've also expanded their cake selections. Everyone has their own preference, so it's hard to say what you should get, everything is so delicious! But if you can scrounge one of those up, the breakfast options are legit and reminds me of our go-to spot just blocks from my grandmother's place in Taipei. The first two Six Ping's are pastry-only, but this location ups the game by adding hot foods that are typically found in Taiwan joints specializing in a good hearty early morning meal. I'm talking lo baak gou (Taiwanese-style turnip cake), dan bing (Taiwanese pancake with egg), you tiao (Chinese doughnut), and dou jiang (soy milk), as well as some lunchable foods like niu rou mien (beef noodle soup), lu rou fan (braised pork belly rice), and xiao long bao (soup dumplings). The menu is ridiculously difficult to read since the English translation is basically worthless (hence the need for a native speaker). But if you can navigate that field, the delicious reward at the end is well worth the pain. read more

My parents always get cakes from here, and I never thought much of it. But I ordered a cake to bring to my workplace, and it was absolutely life changing. Because mangos are in season right now, I ordered the cake that had sliced pieces of mango around the outside of the vanilla cake. As for the fillings, I chose to go with the egg pudding and more mangos. I picked up the cake and the smell of light vanilla cake and fresh mangos were just spilling out from the box. When we opened it, it so wonderfully decorated topped with an assortment of fruits and two small macaroons. It was absolutely beautiful. It tasted even better than it looked or smell. The vanilla cake wasn't that sweet and the frosting on top was light which fit well with the refreshing mango and egg pudding. Definitely one of the best cakes I've ever had in my history of cakes. Next time, I'm always going to order cake from here no matter what. The breads are also extremely cheap, yet extremely high quality. You absolutely cannot go wrong with it! The one thing that does stand out to me (besides the cake) are the gigantic macaroons sitting at the front. They're 2/$4! That's such a steal! Other places you're paying $3-$4 for tiny macaroons! Six Ping Bakery sets itself apart from the existing Chinese bakeries in Bellaire Chinatown by wrapping up their pastries and breads really nicely in crispy cellophane and selling a huge variety of pastries, many being variations of each other. For instance, they might add cheese and/or nuts to many common Chinese pastries and sell them in separate display cases. Six Ping's pleasant smell of pastries reminds me the most of bakeries in Taiwan. Few of the bakeries in Houston have that awesome smell. The store is really small--a rectangle with layers of display cases around the outer wall and a middle aisle also loaded with levels of display cases. I prefer not to buy pastries here because their prices are a little higher. Something about 85 cents at other bakeries might cost $1.xx here. However, the few pastries I've had here are tasty and my Mother's friend shops here regularly. The last time I came here, about a month ago, it seemed quite popular--one of the more popular places in this part of the Diho Square shopping center.
