I really had high hopes for this bakery. I saw all of the amazing reviews and the great pictures so I gave this bakery a visit. There wasn't a lot of variety when I went in, just a lot of the same thing. All of the breads I bought were very dry and flavorless, and the puff pastries were so dry and crumbly that I couldn't even eat them. The large macarons were also awful; they were dry and hard and super crumbly. Even the tiramisu was horrible- all I could taste was shaving cream. Wonderful little store out of a chain that has multiple locations up and down Bellaire Blvd. It's just a storefront as the goods seem to be made somewhere else. I like the different options from the red bean pie to the sweet breads and they retain their freshness even into the night. So many different kinds of cake here; all look great. I haven't had a chance to taste anything other than their mango cake and let me tell you, it was Delicious. The mango slices to the side of the cake were sweet and all the other fruits (as toppings) were fresh and tasted good too. I didn't quite like the fact that it was a little "over" and "heavy" with the whipping cream; it was pretty overwhelming to me. This particular location is older and I don't come to this one often (I go to the one in the plaza with all the dessert and boba shops) but nevertheless, I discovered this location first. The bakery goods here are ridiculously cheap. I went crazy and grabbed like two bags worth of breads and the price was still cheap. I love how the fillings aren't too sweet either so I feel safe grabbing whatever that's on the shelf. They also make some cute breads in the shape of animals and golden coin. I had a slice of taro cake here which was good too. I don't know if they use the same recipe for the cake as in other places but I bought a cake from one of their other locations and it was beautiful and delicious. I totally happened across Six Ping by accident!! This place has some high quality baked goods!! I would recommend the honey cookie, and anything with custard-those are my favorite! Everything here is made fresh daily and it seems like they definitely run out of things fairly quickly so come early to get the good stuff!! For 5 items we paid $11.25, which is a fairly good price compared to some of the other comparable places that I've been to. We also tried the pineapple cookie as well as the vanilla cupcake! But since I started dating my gf, her sweetness level has increased and mine has decreased and we are somewhere in between. I guess that's what love does to a person. They are happy with giving up what the used to enjoy. =x All joking aside, this place makes some mean pastries. One of my favorites is their pandan leaf cakes. They make the big cakes, but also makes individually packed slices and mini "cupcakes". Skip the cupcakes as they are awfully dry, but the individually wrapped slices are amazing! B-E-A-UTIFUL cakes. I work right around the corner from this bakery and when boss man's wifey was celebrating her birthday, I stopped in to pick a nice cake up for the office. The green tea cake was gorgeous, topped with macarons, fresh fruit and chocolate twills and even stuffed with pineapple and egg pudding. They have really interesting pastries. Perhaps the most interesting was a french toast Bahn Mi. Imagine a sandwich with 3 layers of French toast. In between the first layer is your normal ham and cheese. Ahhhhh !!! The thin sliced Mango fruit on the outside of our cake was such an enticing and pleasurable site to see we could hardly wait to see and taste the inside. We were not disappointed. 3 tender cake layers surrounded by a light sweet cream/pudding made the entire presentation beautiful just to look at. A variety of fresh fruits adorned the top. Of course the point is to enjoy and just... Wow ! The sweetness of the natural Mango combined with the light cream filling made for an incredible texture and taste that i have not experienced. Comparing to other bakery shops nearby, this one looks the cleanest and offers a great selection. The amazing bakery smell upon entering Six Ping is a good sign. Aside from offering traditional Taiwanese breakfast selections, Six Ping also has a bakery on the side with all the baked good favorites! The cash only is not an issue as most of the menu and bakery selections are cheap. Went pre-Chinatown rush hour on a weekend for breakfast (~9:30am) and seating was quick. You order at the counter and snag a seat. Top picks: Red Bean Cake - flaky sweet bread, fresh from the oven, stuff with sweet red bean Steam Brown Sugar Bun with Egg - warm and fresh, I could eat the bread by itself but the scallion egg was delicious Salted Sticky Rice: ordered it with egg and fried dough which were great additions but the sticky rice was a bit tough on the outside Pork Xiao Long Bao: $6 for 8 pieces of decent sized dumplings, great deal! Loved the dumpling skin and the flavor of the meat inside The baked sesame pancake wasn't very good (bread was hard and difficult to chew) and paired with just the fried dough and egg, dish was pretty plain. Stopped by the bakery and grabbed a couple of sweet breads. Not sure how the quality is later in the day, but we snagged everything fresh so it was delicious!!! Being that there are so many locations of Six Ping in the same vicinity I wanted to get the right location. The one in this review is next to a hair salon by Jusgo supermarket (Old Diho Market). The question here is: do all Six Ping locations have the same standard? My wife and I always ordered bread with red beans and taro stuffings, triangle chocolate cakes, and our favorite, bread rolls with pork foil and onions. The last time we were here the taro and red beans stuffing were not up to the standard of Six ping. We only got just over a third of what we used to get. Normally, Six Ping are very generous with the stuffings with their breads. Also, the bread rolls with pork foil were not as soft and moist as other locations. Honestly, we could have caught the place on their off day. If we were to be around this Six Ping location again, we would drop by and give them a try again. Normally, Six Ping are pretty solid with their offerings. All and all, this Six Ping got a 3-star rating from me. read more

I personally have not done a lot of exploring in Bellaire eateries but I do know when I stumbled soon this gem I found some of the best pastries I've tasted before! This bakery has a "hole in the wall" type ambiance when looking at it from the outside. Then again...most of Chinatown is like that. Six Ping offers daily fresh bread and pastry desserts (and even lunch breads). I have had the pleasure of eating random things from here, but sadly...I don't really remember what I bought. I literally went into the store, grabbed a tray, and just picked random things off the shelf. The bread from each pastry has an oily, melt-in-your-mouth taste (hmm...similar to cotton candy). Don't take my word for it, just go in there, buy anything, then eat it. One of the breads I remember getting was a Japanese milk bread. Now, I am not a person who eats sweet stuff like candy, cupcakes, cakes, etc., because they are all too sweet for my taste. But this milk bread fell exactly in the middle. It wasn't too bland of where it was just like eating a piece of bread, but it also wasn't over powering with sweetness - so I didn't feel like I needed to see the dentist afterwards. I can't really say anything about the services, due to the fact they don't really help you unless you ask (never really had to ask for anything). But they seem like a nice bunch of people. Mainly because of their varied selection of buns and pastries. It's like Anpanman and company live here! But most importantly they taste good. I've been fooled by other bakeries where the texture is there but falls flat in flavor. My personal favorites are the pork sung (aka carpet meat) breads. Both the original and nori sesame one. Also prices are very reasonable. Each bun is $1-2, so a whole week's worth costs no more than $10 at most. Unfortunately I end up scarfing them down within three days...Everything is individually wrapped making it easy for on the go eating. They have an extensive selection of both. I like how they have both the English and Chinese descriptions. Some of the pastries have creative presentation (pig, turtle, lobster etc). They even have cute miniature desserts as well as fancy cakes (hello kitty, angry birds, and Asian style cakes). You can call ahead of time to order the specialized cakes. I'm not sure of the prices of the cakes as they may vary and they're not on the cake menu, but the pastries are inexpensive. Each one is approximately $1-$2. Best ones in town at the moment. Crispy and airy, delicious. Yes, they're fried so be warned, it's oily. But worth it. Soy milk - standard, good. Pan-fried buns - ehhh ok this was not that great... My boyfriend surprised me with a cake from here for my birthday, so this review is based solely on that. However, I will definitely be back to try their other pastries and breads so that I can write a more accurate review based on the location as a whole. The cake was beautifully decorated and coated with mango slices on the outside as opposed to a traditional iced spread, and the mangoes were very sweet and fragrant. The cake topping was a bit excessive because there was so much of it, but it was a nice amount of fruit and was a good portion to share amongst guests. On the inside, it had a moist vanilla sponge and mango mousse and mango chunks. It wasn't overwhelmingly sweet, and was very light in texture. My only major complaint is that it was a messy cake to cut and came apart quite easily.
