rented a car earlier this week and the process seemed quick, easy, and honestly great. However, when I got to my car, it he'd ton of cosmetic damage- literally scratched on every side. The car only had 2k miles on it so clearly someone had really put it through hell. Anyway, I followed the app instructions and uploaded no less than ten photos of more damage to the already 10+ photos that were present. I took the car for a few days with no issue. When I returned it, a Sixt employee completed a damage inspection, told me everything was good, and then quickly hurried me into the airport because he was busy with other cars. Now today, I receive an email accusing me of damaging the windshield. The attached photo shows no visible damage. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that maybe there's a small chip even though I can't see it. However, it's nothing compared to the mountain of damage when I picked it up. The audacity of Sixt to give a customer a car with over 15 separate instances of damages, inspect the car upon return, approve it as fine, and the turn around days later after its customer is long gone and allege damages is insane. I wanted so badly to love this company, but I can never recommend them now. Their rental process relies heavily on trust and the honor system of self-reporting damage. Apparently, their employee inspection means absolutely nothing. This company cannot be trusted. Clearly, they are renting severely damaged vehicles and then gouging as many customers as possible to make up for the cheap rates they are offering. Do not use Sixt! It's to risky. Every part of the process relies on apps and you noting all damage. This leaves too many loopholes for them to accuse you of causing damage. Especially, considering that their employ will inspect the car, tell you it's good, then come back days later and try to charge you for a hardly visible (if it exists at all) scratch. Something that would be considered normal wear and tear on a vehicle. Also, so small that any windshield repair company would tell you not to repair. This company is deceitful and dishonest. This was by far the worst car rental experience I have ever had. It started with a cold, militant man on his fist day, not answering questions, being aggressive and finally throwing my license at me and walking away. After apologies from the staff, taking pics of the car, I was stopped at the gate for 10 minutes with others but continued. Within 10 minutes I looked at the gas gauge and it was HALF FULL so I took pics of that and the location of where I was which included the time stamp. It took 3 phone calls during my vacation to reach a customer service rep (there is no direct line for Sixt and it is outsourced) who said all would be ok just return car gas tank to half full. Upon return I showed the pics and was told "I was good and all was resolved." I received an email with an additional charge of $90 that included a FULL tank of gas and interest. At which I wrote customer service and explained. NOTHING HAPPENED. I called again and after explaining the situation, I was told by a frustrated rep that there was no confirmation number or guarantee that she could provide for me but supposedly (like the others) she said the $90 charge would be returned. I rented a Rav4 Hybrid from PHX SIXT car rental. I arrived after dark, and it was very difficult to see the car to do a walk-around to check for damage. They expect you to use their phone app to review and report additional damage. However, the app was very difficult to use, especially with it being so dark. The car was dirty, so we had to wipe off the dirt to check for damage. I needed to have an attendant assist me with photographing all the extra damage and reporting it through their app. For instance, there was unreported physical damage to the body of the car, and cigarette burns to the upholstery. I had to trust that the attendant got everything that I pointed out, as there was nothing for me to review before I had to sign approval. I rented the car on April 1, 2026, and returned it on April 6th. On April 2nd I received an email asking for an explanation of additional damage that they found on the vehicle, just hours after I left the lot. This was pre-existing damage that they were now blaming me for. I didn't see their email until I returned home from my trip. The email only had a link to a page where I was supposed to explain the reason for the damage, even though it existed before I rented the car. I attempted several times to contact them by phone, but the AI agent kept sending me to someone in another country who only spoke Spanish, who would then hang up on me. Apparently all phone assistants are in the Philippines. I finally found someone who spoke English, but they had no way to send me confirmation of my report of this issue. So I don't know what I can do if they try to charge me for pre-existing damage. I won't ever use this company again. I'll stick with only American-based companies. Date of Rental: 8/22/2025 - 8/26/2025 I rented a car from Sixt in PHX Airport between the above listed dates, and returned the vehicle within schedule with NO DAMAGE. Even when returning the car I was checked out by a member of Sixt that visually examined the car along with me and my 2 friends; no damage existed. I have the return receipt that includes no damage reported to the vehicle; left and got on my flight headed back home to KY. 8/27 - I noticed an email from Sixt stating I needed to respond to a notice that had sent. Unbeknownst to me during my trip Sixt Damage Department created a false damage report and sent me email correspondence about it on 8/24. I never triggered this damage report in anyway on 8/24 and not sure how they could've with the vehicle in my possession and like I stated no damage whatsoever was found on the vehicle upon return 8/26; especially not a crack in the driver side windshield as they have claimed in this fake damage report they have fabricated. I responded to the damage report as requested with the following: The claim was started Sunday before I even returned the vehicle not sure how that could happen when Sixt didn't even have possession of the vehicle. I returned the car without incident Tuesday 8/26, a Sixt rep came over when I returned the car and checked it and told me I am good to go. This crack was not present nor was there any damages to the car at all. This is a fraudulent attempt to get more money out of a customer and I'd advise Sixt to stop these fraudulent practices. This is the second time I've rented from you all and Sixt tried to claim damage or a smoking fee in order to get more $ from the customer. 10/15- Sixt sent email correspondence to me to pay a balance of $953.40 to pay for the damages that were fabricated or they will seek collections against my credit. Sixt will need to provide video evidence with time stamps that show when I left with the vehicle 8/22 and returned it 8/26 with the damage reported. Furthermore upon investigating the damage report it clearly states the "damage date" was 8/20. I didn't even rent the car until 8/22. This is clearly a fraudulent scheme. Sixt has already been sued in a class action for this exact behavior it's a shame to see it playing out all over again. Renters beware! Stay away from any SIXT rental car facility especially the PHX Airport location!!! Disgusting practices! Shame on you! I have filed complaints with the BBB, FTC, Arizona Attorney General and will continue to publicly call out these fraudulent practices until this business is no longer in existence! Our experience- firstly, we had already paid for a MID-SIZE SUV before online. The employee tried to act like they only had a smaller SUV and that's what we would have to get. But we could upgrade and then somehow they would have a MIDSIZE if we paid more. We stood our ground and said we paid for a MIDSIZE SUV so we wanted what we paid for and we are not paying to upgrade. He literally pretended to make a phone call downstairs (we saw his phone not light up) and he then proceeded to act like he was doing us a HUGE favor by giving us a BMW SUV and that there were barely any left. We said okay, as long as it's a midsize SUV like we paid for... lol. He then tried hard to get us to pay for all these extra things that we already know we don't need (we felt bad the older couple in front of us because they fell for all of this and paid a ton of extra money). So remember do not let them add on things. Then- we get downstairs (surprise surprise) there are tons and tons of these BMW SUVS. Lol. They are handing them out like candy because they obviously had a surplus of them. Before we even made it downstairs- we knew we were leaving a bad review for all the scam behavior from the representative. But it gets worse unfortunately. When we returned the vehicle (with a full tank of gas we have pictures of lol because we had a feeling they would try to squeeze any penny they could) - days later they charged our card for 100$ for gas, 63$ for an extra day of renting the car (we returned the car on time), and a rental facility charge (a made up charge if 20$). We have rented from so many companies and this has never happened. Ever. Four minutes after I booked I had the instinct to just look at reviews and literally the first six reviews said they claim fake damage to the car door and try and charge you an extra $600. I immediately went to cancel my reservation (which Expedia said I could do before the rental which is still 3 days away mind you) and Sixt wanted to charge me a $100 to cancel... for a reservation I made less than 10 minutes before and was days out. Luckily the Expedia team was able to help me out and grateful for Neftaly there who really went above and beyond. But I have rented many rental cars both personally and for a whole crew for work and have never experienced a company trying to literally charge you for not using there car - which in and of itself belies they are dishonest and trying to get money any way they can. As seasoned travelers renting cars for over 30+ years, husband and I should've known better, (much less read all the the well-documented customer complaints against SIXT BEFORE trying them for the first time)...NEVER AGAIN!! Top complaint - #1 upsell on vehicle upgrades, both car and insurance - The former we bit on (more on that later), the later we never do...but maybe this time we answered the declination of insurance too quickly, and tipped-off the agent that we were a candidate for the SIXt special pay more later in damages category so many on Yelp here have mentioned? The rental agent at the airport was attractive and personable, slick in hindsight, but efficiently moved people along...so what that he sold our car upgrade as "brand new" (it wasn't, had 22K miles), but the car looked clean...what could go wrong treating ourselves? Top complaint #2, as every travel expert today repeats ad nauseum , "always take videos and pictures of your rental car in case of dispute"...but let's be real, who doesn't hate going back weeks later to delete the dozen or so pictures of some rental car that you forgot to delete after the last half dozen trips you also forgot to delete? All for the sake of maybe having to "prove" that you didn't actually damage a car when you know you didn't (because you are a decent human being who owns up to their mistakes)....and besides, the last time you actually pointed out a scratch to the car attendant (at Hertz etc.), they begrudgingly noted it on some plack card that was later shoved into the car's glovebox for the remainder of the trip, while giving some serious side-eye for having them do this extra step part of their job, (it's never seemed to be very important to Hertz, Avis, Alamo, etc), but that was then, and this why your husband's a preferred and gold member at several of these other agencies (you should have used instead of trying something new). Thought it weird at drop off when the SIXt attendant went over the car (my husband at his side) with an exceptionally fine toothed comb...hmmm...and all the while his flunky side kick attendant trying to distract and hustle us off to our flight by saying that the airport was a complete mess and the TSA lines were averaging over 2hrs (SIXt knew our flight was boarding sooner than that). I was struck in the moment with the thought "how helpful, but distressing too...no other rental car company ever mentioned that kind information at drop off before". Unfortunately, any appreciation was short-lived when we found no TSA lines and no overcrowded airport chaos...none. Why would their attendant worry us like that? Why indeed. Today we received our first ever damage notification for a "10cm scratch down to the primer on the passenger side door", No way we would've missed that kinda of damage at drop off and no way I would have missed a scratch like that on a door I opened and closed nearly a dozen times over the last two days, and lastly...no way would we have tried to "hide" something like that upon return (which SIXt now seems to be implying). But without pics it's ours word against theirs and nothing about it smells good. I'm loath to think, but maybe this is how SIXt does business, by getting unsuspecting customers to pay for the cost of doing business and refreshing their fleet of luxury "new" cars with 22+k miles on them. Reading their do-not-reply-to-this email, I'd be surprised if our word means much. Stay tuned (I'll report their decision and update my review accordingly), but STAY AWAY FROM SIXt at Sky Harbor airport. The lines may be out the door at Budget and the other car rental companies on site there too, but there's a good reason for it! 10/23/2022 - Just heard back from SIXt: "Regarding the damage sustained to our vehicle during your rental, please settle the outstanding balance of $358.00 by 10.30.2023. According to our papers the damage has occurred during your rental. Thus we claim for indemnity." Oh, and the pictures they took supporting their claims were blurry, reflective, and piss poor at showing any damage whatsoever. The part of the car shown in several of the pictures (back, hood, etc) wasn't even the passenger door in dispute, and one photo closeup showed a scratch, much less 10 CM to the primer, anywhere. Nice racket...BEWARE of this company and BE WARNED! If it looks too good to be true (lower pricing online than other major car rental companies, and slick no waiting lines kiosks at the airport) it is. When it came time to get a refund they said ther was no refund due. The agent had slip in a charge for insurance against my specific directive to decline their insurance. Sales person there was fine, they do like to up charge you on a different vehicle. During the 2 day he tire warning system came on leading me to believe I had a flat tire. No issues after exiting interstate and pressed "relearn" button and it went off, breaks at 66%. It came back on and just ignored. It comes on at least three times a day. I sent an email on their company web site with pictures of the warning in Saturday, this is Tuesday and no one has called. I called them yesterday morning, that person was going to have someone call me back for a vehicle exchange, that's when I was in San Diego...no call. I called today and was told that I didn't talk to anyone yesterday and they don't see an email. And yesterday it came up showing I needed an oil change soon. All these errors are uncalled for and I have another 4 days yet. Calling them, they are hard to understand when talking. BEWARE! I was falsely accused of damage to a vehicle. The proof they provided, you could not even tell what kind of car or the color of the car! This seems to be a very common trend now with Sixt. The damage was a small "scuff" on the wheel and they charge me $462 and I didn't even do it! They are pinning damages on everyone and providing limited proof to even show it is your vehicle! When asked for better pictures or proof, they said no! I asked the agent what color the car was in the picture and they said black. Mine was grey! I asked for the call recording and they denied it! When I picked up the car, they asked if I'd pass any tolls. Obviously, I didn't know. I told them I wouldn't in the city I was visiting, but I wasn't sure if I'd pass any on a highway to drop the car off. They asked which highway and said there wouldn't be any tolls. I passed a toll on the highway. I don't carry cash. No big deal. Guy says rental company will bill you. Fine. Toll was $1.75. BUT, that's before Sixt's "administrative fee" of $15. Unfortunately, I had a poor experience renting from Sixt last week at the Phoenix Airport. While getting and returning the car went smoothly, when I had realized I had left a gift in the car, customer support was far from helpful in finding a solution. We had immediately tried to call the Sixt front desk at the Phoenix Airport. This number is unpublished and unavailable to customers. The desk was clearly equipped with a phone when picking up the car. Instead we had to contact the general customer support number in hopes of being connected. The main operator was unwilling to connect us to the front desk or call them directly whatsoever. We called for multiple days following, and at this point we were unable to speak to anyone! Eventually, they claimed they did not have my gift in their lost and found... To put it simply, either their employees are taking items left in cars, or they are not properly cleaning and inspecting vehicles before renting them again. If they had been able to connect us to the desk, we would have quickly fixed the problem. Instead, I am without a $200 Christmas gift due to the lack of assistance and correspondence. What is the point of customer service, if all they do is make you jump through hoops that never get you where you need to be in the first place? I rented a Dodge Challenger at the beginning of the month and was horrified at the invoice they emailed me two weeks later. 400 smoking charge! I don't smoke and no one else was in my car. I dropped it off and some young guy was checking all the vehicles so next time I will make them do the physical walked around when I pick it up and drop off. SIXT appears to be running a SCAM!! We rented and paid for a COMPACT vehicle. Upon arrival we were told we would be driving a MINI COOPER. We were asked if we wanted to upgrade to a HONDA ACCORD for an additional fee, which we declined. When we got to our vehicle it was a BMW228 GRAN COUPE, which is considered a LUXURY vehicle. We checked our receipt and there was no additional charge. There was NO VISIBLE DAMAGE. Husband ggot to Sixt late b/c of delayed flight near closing time in what felt like the middle of the night to them b/c of time change. Best premium car rental place in the world! After our disappointing 1.5 hour wait in the sweltering heat for our Dollar no-show rental, we showed up at the pristine Sixt counter. It was like encountering an ice cold glass of water after traversing an endless desert. Despite having no reservation, and no membership number, we were treated like VIP. Price matched to a BMW X3 by our thoughtful Sixt agent. The car was pretty much brand new, clean, and sitting ready for us in the garage floor below. Rented medium sized car for ~1 day for Business. After I'd returned the car, got notices that it was not returned. Kept calling and messaging SIXT to let them know I'd returned it (where and when). Was told not to worry about the notices. Went from weeks into over a month, including a letter that the vehicle would be reported stolen if I did not return it. Never able to get a call from Manager or late returns department, after requesting so I could discuss (copying various SIXT email addresses including service@sixt.com). Was told to not ignore the will report stolen notification. Two month's later, got charged over $7,000 on my credit card. read more

I didn't receive an email from anyone or any communication (other than here), but they refunded close to 60% of my total for the inconvenience. I didn't have to reach out and request it, they just adjusted my invoice automatically. That was helpful and it showed they accepted accountability. If there was a way to give 0 stars, I would! I rented from Sixt in the Jacksonville, Florida Airport. I used my Expedia points so did not put the cost on my credit card. Big mistake! A few days after drop off, we were accused of putting 2 scratches on the car and charged $540. We put NO scratches on this car! I challenged this charge, but they would not budge. I tried to get my American Express to handle the claim since we used them as the deposit credit card. They would not accept since we did not actually pay with AE. I called to dispute and was told they were not even fixing the "scratches," just charging me for it and they would settle for $250. Total extortion! Not sure where we will go from here. Lesson learned is to always take pictures when picking up and dropping off a rental car and to always pay with a credit card that has rental car protection. I arrived at the Sixt Phoenix Sky Harbor rental counter late night after a very long flight. I had reserved a VW Atlas as I needed an SUV for purposes of my trip. I checked in and went to retrieve the car but found, to my surprise, that it wreaked of smoke. I thought about just taking it and sat in it for a few minutes but literally started to get nauseous. The counter manager Scott C refused to substitute with another SUV, which they had available and instead tried to give me a minivan. I explained that the clearance on the minivan would be an issue but he refused to help and was incredibly rude about it. I canceled the reservation and walked over to Hertz. No issues there. I prepaid my rental. They took a $200 deposit. Car returned last Monday. $200 deposit still not returned to my card. I called two days later to inquire. They said it takes up to 10 business days to return my deposit???? Outrageous! Do not rent from these crooks who make interest in MY money, when I should be making that interest!
