My date and I were looking for a place to grab food after some drinks at mini boss. Was surprised to see a skewer place in dtsj just down the street from all the bars. It's a a bit small and right next to the corner so you might walk past the sign without realizing it. Food was cheap, the skewered were a tad over cooked but no where near bad or tough. I'd rate the skewered a 3.8/5, we got beef, lamb, and a mushroom one. Garlic fries were tad soggy but they were made fresh with loads of fresh garlic, would bump up the score if they were a bit crunchier 3/5 Onion rings were a little on the harder side but we weren't looking for anything super fancy 3/5 Veggie egg rolls were small but they came with soy sauce and sweet/sour sauce. I want to note that even though most of the food seemed to be premade/ store bought, they sold them for CHEAP and the wine was cheap too with a generous pour. You get what you pay for food wise and the service was great so it was a nice cheap place to grabe a few small bites, drinks and chat before jumping into clubs like temple, lab or splash (just a short walk in each direction) The service was really good and quick! They were nice people and very attentive to my date and I. The boyfriend and I stumbled across this hidden gem by accident -- and, we're so glad that we did. For starters, we were able to grab a seat immediately upon walking in on a Saturday night. Came here for food after a night of barhopping. I've been eyeing this spot for a while as it's conveniently located right next to a row of bars downtown, but haven't had the chance to go until recently. There was house music pumping and a steady stream of people coming in throughout our time there. The seating area is quite small although there's a coffee table, small couches, and as well as seating available outside. The menu is straightforward and affordable. I was surprised at how small the selection of skewers was, although it had the most popular/basic meats that people would want anyway. I got the beef skewers, lamb skewer, and garlic fries. To my disappointment, the garlic on the garlic fries was from prepackaged minced garlic, so it didn't have that spicy/fragrant quality that we craved. Fresh garlic would totally level it up. The meats were good though and had that Chinese seasoning that makes everything taste delicious. The service was great. The wait was a bit long for our food but we didn't mind as the beers came out right away. Got the Eyecrosser, Triple Blitz, and the Monkey banana-flavored beer. All of them were refreshing. I like that the name is straight to the point. Let's you know they got skewers and brew here! Location is great being right next to my favorite cocktail bar (shout out to 55 South), but Skewers and Brews being a new establishment, they do have some points to polish. Nonetheless, I'm rooting for them since their skewers prices are doable and great for lining my stomach before bar hopping. Came out on a Wednesday, and I wanted to try this place out before hitting Whiskey Wednesday over at Five Points. I had the Blonde Kolsch to pair with the chicken, beef, and shrimp skewers. I also got garlic fries and those take about 15 minutes. My Kolsch was great, absolutely refreshing and crisp. Skewers were pretty good, not mind-blowing, but they do the job. Our bartender, Reuben, was very nice and was running a one-man-show between grabbing our brews and prepping our food. Owner showed up when we were finishing up our skewers, and naturally because of the small-environment of this place, just about everyone can probably hear your conversation. Music could be played a little louder to ease the environment's awkwardness, and tables were not the cleanest when we walked into the empty place. He also put on the basketball game I wanted to watch. There are many skewer options. However, they were out of most of them. I ordered two of the vegetarian options: eggplant and mushroom. They were out of the eggplant. Again, the customer service was good because he brought out extra mushrooms but on a Friday night at happy hour time, they shouldn't have been out of one of the only vegetarian options. They were also out of two of the meat options. We were the only ones there for over an hour. It wasn't very busy the entire time. We stopped in because of all the great reviews and we're lovers of meat on sticks, but I haven't experienced service this poorly in a long time. Upon entering, we received an awkward, loud, HELLLLLOO from the guy behind the bar, who aside from that, was engrossed in a conversation with his friend and couldn't be bothered after taking our order and serving us our drinks. 30 minutes later, drinks finished and sitting around waiting for our food order, I had enough and asked if our food was being prepared. Mind you, the place was empty except for said friend and 1 other table. Oddly enough, the chef was talking with that other table THE WHOLE TIME. I was given some BS excuse that the onion rings take long because they're being air fried. 30 minutes? I think not. Miraculously, after asking, the chef goes into the kitchen and 10 minutes later, our food arrives. The food itself wasn't half bad, they season a lot with cumin and I happen to like cumin. A cool, little bar that just opened up in the Downtown San Jose bar scene. They're pretty much in the area near 55 South or Paper Planes. That being said, there's still a lot of room for improvement for this place. If they were swarmed by a large rush of people, I kind of doubt they'd be able to manage it well given the experience of my visit. The biggest draw here is probably going to be value. The prices here are much cheaper than most of their competition, assuming prices remain around where they are now. The skewers are at a great price at $2.45 a pop for the meat skewers (lamb, beef, chicken, etc.). All of the skewers seem to have a similar Chinese dry rub applied to them. Despite other reviews saying they were really tasty, I think it might've just been more of an unfamiliarity with the spices used since it's a bit unexpected given the appearance of the bar (FYI, might be good to mention it as to not catch customers off guard). Also, the skewers had a somewhat large amount of fat on them and were chewy, but given the price tag, it's not a huge gamble to try one and see how you feel. The guy next to me at the time though definitely spit out a bunch of fat. They have a bunch of beers and wines here for you to choose from. There isn't much detail on the wines, it's just ok, I'd probably lean more towards the beers. I tried a bit of both. Service is the other area where improvements could be made. Mark is a great and hospitable guy, but service wise, there could be a bit more focus on getting what the customers need. The other bartender was more attentive to those needs. When I got in, I was sitting at the bar for quite a while before getting any help from Mark, It could be good to at least call the other bartender from the kitchen while you're talking with another guest... Checking out was a little weird since tabs are opened by name rather than just holding people's credit cards. But aside from all this, friendly environment, just needs a little hustle in my opinion. Given the speed, had the place been packed, you'd see a bunch of disgruntled customers. This spot is a cool new addition to Downtown SJ. It has potential, but there are areas that need to be worked on. They haven't been open for too long so hopefully they're just working out the kinks. This place is just average. I was super excited to come here after work with a friend. We came upon an empty restaurant and the cashier gave us recommendations. He had pretty good customer service and was friendly! However the atmosphere was lacking a bit. I do like the medieval theme though. Food was just okay. The skewers seemed as if they had been sitting out for a while and then just reheated a bit. I got the lamb, shrimp and mushroom. For the decent price I paid, I guess it was just alright. However everything was pretty dry to me, and my friend thought there was too much seasoning on her eggplant skewers. As for beer, they have just an okay selection. I would I could give this place a better review, but perhaps it can be taken as honest feedback for improvement? It's clearly a mom and pop shop that's trying their best. They seem to cater well to the young, foreign, college student (with fake IDs?), as there's a couch, tables, and games, paired with cheap(er) food offerings, beer on tap, and wine. For the 30-and-up patron, like myself, I would prefer a cleaner establishment. It felt sticky. The food takes a while to come out, and when they do, come out on plastic cafeteria trays and plastic baskets. Furthermore, the utensils are of the takeout variety: knife + fork + 1 napkin encased in plastic wrap, which is odd for what is supposed to be a dine-in experience. Although the prices appear cheap and reasonable, the food is actually not a great value, considering the quality and amount. The shrimp skewer is ONE shrimp; the dumplings are 6 underwhelming bite-sized morsels for $5, the garlic fries tasted old, and the onion rings, which though made-to-order were not crispy. It just has an odd, confusing vibe. I would not call this place a restaurant, but it's also a weird bar. I think they're trying to go for a "pub" feel, where you can hang out and play games while enjoying a brew and some bar food, but this space desperately needs some decor to create that sort of ambiance. read more

Clean spot, prime location, and different food. Parkings always issue downtown, but thats not the reason for a four star. Owner talked to us on Friday of last week, and the meat skewers were priced well, but no sauce which is important with plain grilled meat. Some choices of sauce can help bring in more business as, some of my friends found the meat to get boring after 1-2 skewers. Decided to check this place out after coming from Original Gravity Public House across the street. We ordered one lamb, one chicken, one eggplant, and one mushroom skewer. Each is cooked with Chinese five spice, a delicious blend of sweet, bold and spicy flavors! Although each skewer is cooked with the same seasoning, the meat/veggie each tasted unique. I think the only downside was the lamb skewer was pretty fatty, and I had a hard time eating some of the pieces. Most of the beer on tap is from Das Brew (I recommend stopping by the brewery in Fremont). The owner was also super nice! My boyfriend and I talked to him for a bit before heading to the Sharks game. What is surprise to find a place open till midnight with craft brews, my favorite IPAs and sours paired with skewers, styled in a Northern Chinese barbecue way. Passed it 1 million times then decided to check it out and realized it's not just a bar but has great food, surprised to find the lamb and beef tender and tasty. Shrimp complete with the head which I love to chew on. Green chili & Oyster mushrooms spiced up nicely. Onion rings were not hand battered, but still fresh. Skewers were well-priced--I didn't try any; my boyfriend reported that they were "decent" but not the best he'd ever had. We came in around 9pm Saturday and the place was empty, but business really picked up in the following couple hours. Despite being empty at first, it felt very inviting--good for conversation. They have several games available (including my favorite, Cards Against Humanity!) Watch out for the bathroom: the handle came off when I tried to open the door, trapping me inside for a couple tense minutes, before another customer who knew about the problem opened the door for me.
