I had such a wonderful experience at this diner! The food was absolutely delicious, and the servers were attentive throughout my entire visit. The staff checked in multiple times to make sure I was enjoying my meal and kept my beverage refilled. I ordered the Loco Moco, which consisted of white rice, a generously sized hamburger patty, brown gravy, and a choice of eggs. I opted for over-easy eggs, and everything was cooked perfectly. Wow this is such a find! Inside the 4th Street Bowling Alley -- a separate coffee shop and full breakfast bar/diner feel. I did the Western omelette (add sausage) with hash browns well-done and wheat toast -- so tasty! The hash browns are so uniquely made in-house -- thinly shaved slices of full potatoes. So good! We shared the loco moco and pancakes and both were so yummy (sorry was too busy eating that I didn't take pics of our food)! Coffee was perfectly brewed and the perfect pairing for our breakfast. I've been coming here for years. This is the first time I've been disappointed in the food. I ordered the Coulotte Steak & Eggs medium rare. It came out medium well. It had a liver-ish flavor from being over done. Very disappointing. I almost sent the steak back, but this is the first fail ever here, so I gave the cook a mulligan and ate it anyway. The service was stellar as always. My coffee never got below 3/4 full. The server and the bus boy were on point! This will definitely not stop me from returning, as this is one of the best breakfast spots in the valley. The boyfriend and I were out and about, and my hungry self wanted breakfast food (it was already 1pm!). He suggested this diner and was surprised when I told him I have never been before. When we arrived, the diner -- and it really felt like a traditional diner -- was relatively empty as it was a weekday afternoon. We sat at the bar because I wanted the diner experience. Service was super quick and excellent! Our drink orders were taken almost immediately -- now that I think of it, we ordered coffee and orange juice before menus were handed to us. My date ordered the two eggs breakfast with sausages, hash browns, and sourdough toast. After reviewing the very rich menu, I couldn't make up my mind so I ended up ordering the club sandwich. It was a very good choice. Everything came out of the kitchen quickly and the presentation was truly an old school diner "feel" -- so awesome. The menu is packed with a lot of options ranging from breakfast plates to burgers to sandwiches, and even steak dinners! Would definitely recommend this spot for those who have yet to try. At first the outside did not look like much and inside looked like a typical coffee shop. This includes booths along the wall and seats on the counter. It was self seating, so we took out seats. That's when the magic started. Our waitress appeared and gave us the menu and took our drink orders. On review, the menu was extensive not your regular coffee shop menu. It had burgers and hotdogs, but also Hawaiian and Asian foods as well. We gave our orders and then noted how busy they were. Many of the counter seats and booths were filled. Apparently, we were in a working person's restaurant. Good, hearty food at reasonable prices! When the food arrived it was tasty and plentiful. Wow the coffee shop brings back so much nostalgia of old school coffee shop diner style. We came in on a Sunday afternoon. My son was craving for pancakes. We knew if we went to any of the other breakfast spots it would be so packed and have a long wait. This place really hits the spot. Love that they offer rice as an option to your plate combination. I had brunch here one weekday morning and I actually ate beforehand so I only had an appetite to eat a side of eggs. The rest of the table got loco mocos which looked delicious and I thought the portion was shockingly small, but in a good way! Usually, Hawaiian meals are way too large for a human being so it was cool to see a more reasonable size plate of loco moco. The side of eggs were delicious, and I loved hanging out in an old-school diner. The waitress was so friendly and would check in with us multiple times. I MUST PROTECT FOURTH STREET AT ALL COSTS. So many childhood memories here. As the kids say, if you know, you know. Fourth Street is a local's hangout for sure. A lot of the people stop by pre or post bowling, but I would say the majority are there just for friendly servers and good old fashioned diner food. The diner food is a cut above the typical fare, especially considering the Japanese-American and Hawaiian flair a lot of dishes feature. If you want rice with your meal in addition to hashbrowns or toast or whatever else, Fourth Street is the place to do it. I absolutely love the corned beef hash with eggs as well as the franks and rice. Just real comfort food. I also have ordered the Steven's Stir Fry (beef, onions, bell peppers, rice) like 100 times, and I always make sure to add jalapeños because somehow they are so spicy here. Been meaning to try this place for awhile, so finally took the opportunity when the boyfriend and I felt like having breakfast food. Especially after a day of vintage video game shopping. AMBIANCE It's located in a bowling alley... so expect that old diner feel where people over 50 like to hang out. Seriously. But that's the charm of this kind of place, it's no frills diner food with counters and booths. FOOD Chicken Fried Steak: It was a very flat, deep fried steak. Very tender though, because I was most able to cut through it with my fork. I liked it mostly for the texture because it was very crunchy with a slightly meaty inside, but dipping it in the gravy gave it the best flavor. The waitress had told me the gravy was a little different, so I had it on the side just in case. It was like a tan color... tasted fine (like gravy), so I'm not sure what the difference was. I loved that it came with hash browns - they do their hash browns right here. Crispy outside and piping hot. It also came with a side of eggs and toast, which I got overhard and with rye bread. Spam + Eggs: Pretty much your basic spam from a can... they fry it up nice and crispy though. He got his eggs scrambled and opted to have it with rice (he likes to eat Filipino/Hawaiian style haha). Short Stack of Pancakes: "Short" misleads you into thinking they're small, but these are pretty big pancakes. Fluffy though, and they retain syrup pretty well when you pour it on top. I enjoyed them! SERVICE We sat at the counter and got great, attentive service. So attentive that whenever I questioned something on the menu to the boyfriend, the waitress working the counter would overhear and explain what something was. Haha! VALUE Portions here are HUGE... so the food is worth it for the price. Especially with the toast, eggs, and hash browns included in some of the combos. Was only stopping over in San Jose overnight and was looking for a breakfast place close by. I was at Four Points hotel and Fourth Street was next door. The food was ready quickly. The waitress was your typical "I'll get you what you need, you just have to tell me what it is" type. Nothing wrong with that, especially early in the morning, in fact, I prefer it. The food was ok, I had the pancake sandwich, which really wasn't a sandwich... it was pancakes, bacon and 2 eggs. Go figure. The bacon was good... but that wasn't a surprise. The pancakes were rubbery. It took a knife to cut these bad boys, I like my pancakes fluffy and soft enough to cut with your fork. All in all, I'd go there again, but not for pancakes. read more

It's your classic diner that's called coffee shop! Always a great topic to discus. We went after we found out a league took over the whole alley last night. The fries were nice and hot. Chicken nuggets were definitely your classic frozen bag select. The split pea soup definitely didn't seem appetizing but it was great! When you order large fries, you definitely get large fries, a plateful. We definitely came for the hang out and it served it so well, the food can't be judged by a michelin star representative so it's great late night diner food! Nothing seemed oily at all. read more

Had the pleasure of dining here last night. I've heard of the Coffee Shop at Fourth Street Bowl many times. However, I could never seem to get there before their 9pm closing time. Finally, last night I was able to sit at the counter and indulge in some diner classics. As this was my first time I kept it basic to get a feel of their take on the classics. I ordered, club sandwich with fries and a cup of homemade soup (chicken noodle). Let me tell you this was one of the BEST club sandwiches I have ever had. The perfect ratio of bacon, turkey, lettuce, tomato and mayo. I asked for the fries to be done well and they were perfect! Crunchy on the outside and soft and flaky in the middle. My waitress was a lovely young lady who was very helpful and chipper throughout. Sadly, I don't recall her name because she was really the best. For desert they were all out of the apple pie so I went for a pancake (that's desert right). The pancake I'd say was just average as I'm a Bill's Cafe freak when it comes to discs of dough. Overall, this was a 5 star experience because of their tasty classic diner renditions, helpful service and rock bottom low prices. Everything I listed above which was washed down with a Diet Coke (watching the calories. Hahaha) was under 20 bucks!!! This place is going into my heavy rotation. This is one of the OG's cafe this bring back memories. Workers are nice and always smiling especially their cook. Out favorite to order there is the ham and cheese omelette with swiss cheese and hash brown on the side with A-1 steak sauce. It's our favorite. One of the best place and really good tasting food!! I have been going to Fourth Street Bowl Coffee Shop on 4th/Gish, San Jose for many years. I am surprised that I have not reviewed this wonderful restaurant. I have tried so many items from their breakfast lunch and dinner menu. The service is always first rate, regardless who the server is. However, I always request "Ning", who has been my regular for a long time and one of the finest most professional servers I have experienced. As you walk in you are reminded of the Diners of the 1950's and 60's. Everything is kept very clean, the steel cooking area and serving counter, although the restaurant is in need of some cosmetic touch up. It has a large banquet room in the back for groups. In the same building there is a fantastic bowling alley. Now to the menu which pretty much has anything you would want and everything is home made. My favorite special (which changes daily) is the Tuesday Ham Hocks, Bean Soup, Thursday is the Corned Beef and Cabbage, the best I have ever had. The salads are fresh and plentiful. Hand spun old fashion milk shakes (Yes-real scooped ice cream with a mixer) and of course, excellent lemonade. The prices are very reasonable. You can get a huge meal and drink (enough to take some home) for less than $15. The breakfast always use the finest fresh eggs and ingredients, but be warned, portions are huge. Everything is great! The Chefs are Masters and take great pride in the product. THE ONE NEGATIVE THING I have to mention is they no longer make their home made rice pudding. It was so good like my grandmother use to make. PLEASE BRING IT BACK! I will order it every time I eat----I'll take some to go. Whenever I go out with friends I ask them, where to? Sometimes I have an appetite for a simple breakfast without any fancy ingredients or presentation, traditional style. This is exactly what Fourth Street Bowl Cafe is about, a diner with regular folk having regular food. Most customers are blue collar workers starting off their days with a straightforward breakfast. The decor is also quite traditional with an endless bar to eat at. Their menu is very simple, includes mostly classic breakfast combos. You won't find anything sumptuous diverging off of the traditional path. I usually get whatever I feel that morning as everything is prepared homestyle and quite tasty.
