    An excellent Southern Chili Dog.
    Fred B.

This is the original Skid's restaurant that opened in 1947, and was run for many years by J. E. Skidmore before being sold to the Katsoudas family in the early 1980's. They still do things pretty much the way they've always been done here, including having car hops to wait on you as you sit in your car. This is a small place, very worn, and rather cramped feeling inside. They serve a nice, inexpensive breakfast here, some plates & daily special, a Greek item or two, but for me it's always been about the Chili Dog and Skid's Special Cheeseburger with mustard, chili, & onion, and they are both excellent, at least for my tastes. The chili dog is pure Southern - a red wiener (Curtis, Jesse Jones, or Brightleaf), a meaty chili with some character, and a soft, gooey bun - and that is exactly what you get here. The burger is also very, very nice, and it is the same chili as for the dog. It is a diner style burger - a bit small, cooked to a perfect outside crust on a flat top grill, and severed up on a real, old school hamburger bun - no foo/foo here! The Fries are ok here, but generally are under salted. This Skid's is owned by the same family that operates the Skid's in Elon on W. Haggard St, but it is not in any way connected to the other 2 restaurants with Skid's in the name (on S, Church St. in Burlington, and N. Main in Graham), though they were part of the original local chain. I've always felt the food here was the best of the lot, and by a pretty wide margin.

Best hotdog I have ever had!

Fantastic food and great waitress! This will be a regular stop for me when in Burlington. Definitely worth stopping by!

This isn't a modern, spotlessly clean fast food place, but that's why I like it so much! It's like stepping back in time. The place is small, only a few tables plus a bar, but there is outdoor seating and they'll even come to your car. The burgers are heavenly! Probably the best burger I've had in a long time. It had the tastiest slice of tomato on it. Fries were nice and crispy too. I'll be back!.

Wow!!! Incredible mom and pops place. This established has been in operation since the 1940's. It is family owned and operated and you can tell that they put a lot of love into their restaurant. Mother and son were working side by side today, serving up meals there were hot and fresh. You can see right into the kitchen, so there is nothing to hide. Now in my opening comments I said this place opened in the 40's and it looks like not much has changed. However don't let that fool you, their food is delicious. The family is Greek and they have a few traditional Greek dishes on the menu to try if you wanted to give that a go Today I opted for the Skids Special Cheeseburger, because I wanted something a little more simple. It was fantastic!!! I also had it with a side of hush puppies and those were also amazing. You must try this dive if you are passing by the Burlington area. You will not be disappointed.

I stopped here because I was hungry and wanted to take a break from all the running around. Plus I could have a cheeseburger and a beer, but of course that had nothing to do with it. There were two gentlemen working at the time both very polite. Asked if I could have chili on a double cheeseburger and I was told I absolutely could and asked what else I wanted. So I got my cheeseburger with fries and a beer. I was the only person in there but it was also a weekday in the middle of the day. They brought my food to me and I got to sit down and enjoy it while watching the Addams family on television. It was pretty relaxing actually. The place is spotless, brightly lit, and the tables have lots of space between them which is really nice. The classic TV was also nice. I'm really glad they didn't have news or sports on. Lurch and Thing are a lot more entertaining. Anytime I'm in this area I'm going to look for a reason to stop here. I highly recommend this place.

This time I decided to keep things a little more Atkins/keto friendly and ordered a grilled chicken salad and a cup of chili. The total came to just over $26, with the salad alone costing almost $17. I understand prices have gone up everywhere. I can accept that. What I can't accept is paying premium prices while the overall experience falls short. The first issue started before I even got inside. The restaurant was packed, and customers were parked all along the curb directly in front of the designated to go pickup area. That completely blocked access. It took me nearly ten minutes of circling the parking lot, backing up near the dumpster, moving again, and eventually squeezing my truck into a parking space (in the "to-go" pick up area where I'm supposed to be anyway) just to pick up my order. When you're that busy, parking becomes part of the customer experience. At some point management needs to step in and help keep traffic moving instead of allowing the pickup area to become unusable (don't tell me I'm wrong because I'll tell you what not only did. I have to navigate that situation due to cars being along the curb in front of the to go area, but two other vehicles that were parked in the to go spaces had nobody in them and I was there for 10 minutes waiting for my food so those people were inside eating in the restaurant I presume-given that I observed their empty vehicles for a total of 20 minutes). To be fair, the employee who brought my order out was excellent. She greeted me with a smile, was friendly, professional, and was easily the brightest part of the entire experience. Then I got home and opened the salad. For $17, this was honestly disappointing. The chicken, bacon, and toppings had simply been simply tossed in there, while the rest was mostly plain, sad looking lettuce. It looked rushed and careless, especially considering the price. The first of several photos are exactly how the salad looked the moment I opened the container on my kitchen counter. I hadn't touched it or moved anything around. The last photo, however, my awesome lady was able to turn that same salad into something amazing in just a couple of minutes. SHE chopped up some pepperoni that we already had in the refrigerator, diced a little Colby Jack cheese, added tomatoes, mixed everything together, and finished it with ranch dressing and a level 10 appearance on the plate. She didn't have to cook anything. She simply took the time to prepare it the way a $17 salad probably should have looked when it left the restaurant. The chili was good, and I'll absolutely give credit where it's due. Drake's still has menu items I enjoy, and I've had plenty of good meals there over the years. But when you're charging premium prices, customers deserve the same level of quality whether the restaurant is half full or packed to the walls. Being busy explains delays. It doesn't excuse lowering the standard. I genuinely hope Drake's takes this as constructive feedback because I know they can do better. I've seen them do better!

My husband and I stopped in on a Thursday evening around 7pm and the place was pretty full. We sat ourselves at a table in the back room, and I noticed how laid back the place was, which is something I really appreciate. Sadly, it seemed that the relaxed vibe extended a bit too far and reflected on their cleanliness, as I noticed all of the chair rails were dusty, the floors a bit littered, our table sticky, and the plastic menus in need of replacing. Service, however, was wonderful. Our waitress was friendly and pretty attentive given how busy she was. My husband was happy with their on tap beer selection, deciding on Red Oak ($3 on Thursdays!). I went with a margarita and it wasn't the best, but thankfully I didn't pay much for it since it was also on special. They were out of the southwestern egg rolls I initially ordered, so I ended up going with the Philly cheesesteak and homemade chips. I enjoyed the cheesesteak's fresh bread; plenty of tender meat, peppers, and onions; and gooey cheese. It could have used more mayonnaise, but it was still quite good. The homemade chips were tasty but undercooked; if I had been hungrier, I definitely would have returned them and asked for a fresh batch. My husband absolutely devoured the cheeseburger and fries he ordered. He said that it was one of the best burgers he's had in quite a while, and this is a guy who loves burgers and eats them often. I want to return to Piedmont Ale House in the future. I think there are some things they seem to do really well, namely burgers and beer at really reasonable prices!
