I have been trying to get in this place for ages! I'm happy to report that I was finally able to see what the hype was about , and on my birthday weekend!! Woot woot! The place is quaint and cozy. The food was amazing! I enjoy local spots, and Farm to table places have come to be my fave. Oh how deprived I've been all these years of eating quick meals! You can appreciate the fresh veggies, herbs, and fruits. My go to at many eateries is shrimp and grits, if they have it on the menu...and they did! But, the shrimp comes shelled (thank you to the server for the heads up). Although I enjoy playing with my food as much as the next person, I didn't want to risk it. I ordered the hash instead. That hash? Oh you HASH to try it! It was maybe in the top 5 of the best I've had...and I've HASHED a lot in my day. My bf and I waited outside huddled under the overhang from the rain for almost 30 minutes even though it was 1:30 and they close at 2. The inside is homey, little and just adorable. Like a dining room of a bed and breakfast. The cute/little factor ended up being a dud because the waitress bumped into me almost every time she walked by. It was not her fault, there is barely enough room to turn around. If your are claustrophobic I would not suggest coming here as it is a tight fit. We got the cheesy omelet with pea shoots, chicken with biscuits and gravy and the maple sausage. All were subpar. The cheesy omelette was not "fluffy" and the cheese was kind of gross. Biscuits and gravy was underwhelming with my bf refusing to finish it, the chicken chunks were bland. In addition that meal just looked wildly unappetizing. I hate leaving one star reviews, but this was not a great experience for us as we did not have much as far as menu choices went. The menu was very limited and we were not offered any options not on the menu. We went on a Wednesday morning because we both had heard great things about this place and figured a Wednesday was a great day to try it because there wouldn't be the long lines like on the weekends. We got right in and we're shocked at the VERY LIMITED menu. We ended up getting a cinnamon roll and splitting it and my wife got a coffee that ended up being $3.50 alone. Our total bill was almost $12 for a water , coffee and cinnamon roll. Not sure what the Hype is all about if this is their normal menu as the menu we had was VERY LIMITED. Neither of us could find anything on the menu that sounded good to us. We saw several items on the yelp page that looked good to us but when we went none of these items were on the menu we were given. Love trying local places but I was so unimpressed. My suggestion would be to get your food to go. It was very delicious but the service was beyond awful. So unaware of how slow they are. Very small restaurant and limited seating. Waited an hr (told 30 min wait), finally got sat at the bar only to then be told the hostess skipped a group on accident and we had to go wait back outside. Best.Omelette.Ever. While in Columbus, do Skillet. When we pulled up, we were met with a bunch of people waiting outside. We were told 6 parties were in front of us but not quoted a time. We decided to grin & bear it - And I'm so glad we grizzlied it out! We ended up waiting about 45 minutes for our table but Skillet has Cafe Brioso coffee outside for patrons waiting. I don't know I have ever seen a restaurant do something of this nature and it was such a sweet, much appreciated extra touch. Just one example of Skillet going the extra mile in customer satisfaction! The only thing to keep in mind is you will be waiting outside, so heed with caution depending on the weather. Once we were called and walked in, I could see why the wait builds up as Skillet is a fairly small spot. Maybe about 15 tables? It's a packed small space but you don't feel like you are smashed with strangers or anything of that nature. I found it cozy, welcoming and an overall chill and inviting atmosphere vibe. The food focus is farm to fork which for me is always an appreciated concept. Who would scoff at eating fresh, locally sustainable ingredients and the restaurant they are dining in being friendly with local farms?! I tried the Corned Beef Hash ($14) which was served in a warm skillet and quite tasty. The real winner for me was my Farmstead Cheese Omelette ($12) - Laurel Valley Creamery Harvester, Gruyere, and white cheddar folded into a Copia Farm four egg omelette, topped with some greens. The different cheeses melded so well into each other and the omelette was slathered in butter. On my first cut into the omelette I could quickly see it was the smoothest omelette I'd ever had. I have never had such a perfectly cooked omelette that was so simple yet delicious. I've been daydreaming about the milky egg delight since I had it. As delicious as all the carb heavy starters sounded, I felt a bit better I couldn't eat them (healthy living yo) when I heard most were not baked in house. Service was superb! Our server was personable, funny, seemed to be genuinely happy to be there and attentive. What more could we ask for? I went to brunch with my cousins a while back, while visiting them in Columbus from Chicago. We gave this place a shot at my cousin's suggestion. I ordered a simple salad. They had beautiful salads on the menu with tons of ingredients but I just wanted something more basic. When I asked our server if I could just get some greens with tomatoes she told me no it was not allowed. I told her I understood it wasn't on the menu and I would pay whatever the cost would be. She told me it wasn't possible because the tomatoes they had were for other dishes. I asked her to ask her Manager or the Chef to see if they could manage my request - which I thought was pretty basic. She came back and begrudgingly said it would be ok. I told her I appreciated it and if they could just slice up a few tomatoes for my greens I would love it. That's when she said the Chef cannot slice the tomatoes because the knives were for other items. OK...WHAT?!?! My cousins and I started laughing and thought we were being pranked. I told told her I'd take whatever I could get. Well... my plate arrived with a few greens and the most gorgeous array of about 25 unsliced tomatoes!! I shared my tomatoes with my family and we all loved them as we laughed our entire brunch. It's been quite a while since this brunch visit and we still laugh about my tomato salad! Skillet serves up my favorite breakfast in Columbus. It may actually be one of the best breakfasts i've ever had. While I hate to build up people's expectations and set the bar unrealistically high, I believe Skillet deserves its hype and the food does not disappoint. My buddy and I got there at 9:30AM on Sunday morning. We still waited 10 minutes, so getting there early is a good idea. The restaurant itself is relatively small, with seating for about 20 people. The interior is pretty no frills. It's clean, contemporary and casual without being particularly upscale or ornamental. The waitstaff was quick and attentive. They got our orders in promptly and the food came out just as fast. Our coffees and waters were routinely refilled. I was impressed by the quick turnover and by the efficiency of the staff. We shared a cinnamon crumb cake which was decadent. Crisp on first bite, yet soft and melt in your mouth afterwards. I don't have a huge sweet tooth, but this had the perfect amount of sweetness without being too overbearing. We also shared the Pig and Grits, which happened to be my favorite dish that day. The succulent porchetta, smooth polenta combined with tangy tomato gravy topped with a poached egg was pure perfection. The amount of sour, saltiness and savoriness was just right. This dish pretty much encapsulates my ideal breakfast. If ordered alone, it would be a light but satisfying breakfast. Finally, we each ordered the smoked chicken & andouille gravy and biscuits. In hindsight we should have shared one order, but our male egos refused to share and we ordered one each. The plate was HUGE! It consisted of 2 large biscuits and at least 4-5 scrambled eggs. The biscuits were moist and soft without being soggy from the gravy. The gravy itself was flavorful without being too heavy or salty. The one thing that threw me off was the use of scrambled eggs. The eggs were pillowy soft, but did not add any new textures to the dish. Asking for a runny sunny side or poached egg instead may be an idea. Maybe a smaller portion of eggs would be better or if they served it on the side. However since they were on top of the biscuits, I felt like it took away from the dish. It should be called biscuits, eggs and gravy instead of just biscuits and gravy. Despite being super picky about the scrambled eggs, I loved all the dishes at Skillet. So I am probably biased as I live down the street and love having a great neighborhood restaurant so close - but Skillet is amazing! So, I had to make sure to come back to my previous review. After becoming a repeat customer, I have decided that this place deserves 5 stars. I like it more the more I go. One thing I love the most is how their menu basically changes every day. It makes it there is more variety every time you go. And if you get there too late in the day you risk the chance of them running out of certain items. Which is cool because you know everything must be fresh. They also post their menu everyday so you can see what they are making. Their food is very good, and one of the reasons I like it more every time. Last time I got these cheese potatoes and Pimento cheese omelet. Let me tell you. These were fire. One of the best omelets that I have had in a loooong time. And it was stuffed! And the potatoes had like pockets of cheese throughout. It was just crazy good. I'm sorry I can't remember the exact names of these dishes, but believe me, if you see something similar on the menu, make sure to grab it. The interior also has had an upgrade. They have places a bar inside. Which I would have thought as impossible because of the small size of this place. However, it fits, and I like it. The bartender that was working when I as there, was super friendly and had very good customer service. I gave it 4 stars before because I didn't really like the cinnamon roll and I didn't think the food was spectacular. Also, I came late last time so some items that I wanted were sold out. But after going more and trying more items. I've declared that this place is great. The Food is great, the customer service is great, and I like the environment. Everyone at my table loved what they ordered. While visiting Columbus, a friend who lives here said if we got brunch with her, we MUST go to Skillet. She called in and put our names down at 11:18am and they said it was an hour to an hour and a half wait for Sunday brunch. Fine, we toured German Village for a bit. At 11:40am they called saying our table will soon be ready so we ventured to the restaurant. The line to get in is quite long but what's nice is the water and free coffee you can help yourself to while waiting. Too bad they never refilled the coffee because during our 20minutes outside, we remained uncaffeinated. The inside is tiny, less than 10 tables for sure, which explains the wait. By the time the waiter came by to take our order, they were already out of three of their main dishes, one of which was the reason for our visit - the hash. SAD. Wanting meat, we got the turkey sausage with eggs and biscuits. It was good, very peppery, and you can taste the quality. We also shared a blueberry scone which was a nice addition. This restaurant reminds me of my favorite breakfast spot in Providence. The restaurant is tiny and seats no more than 20(?) at a time. The decor is rustic chic. The owner (and frankly the whole staff) is super friendly. I read reviews earlier and knew to come early. We walked along the River and got here around 9:30 am. We waited about fifteen minutes before we were seated. If you plan on coming during brunch times, I would suggest grabbing a coffee while you wait. There isn't much within walking distance to see. so even if they call you, you probably will just be walking along the residential side walk. Everything we had was amazing. We weren't planning to drink that early in the morning but boy were we not disappointed. Their cocktails were so delicious. My favorite dish was the mushroom grits. I LOVE their biscuits and gravy. They are my everything. It is a subtly spicy dish with deep flavor baked into every bite. They come with scrambled eggs sitting atop fluffy and yet crispy biscuits. Skillet exceeded expectations!! When we got there, we were told we'd have to wait about 10 minutes. It's a cute little place with only about five tables. We chose to wait. They told us to look at the menu. When we sat down to eat we ordered Waters to drink that came with a carafe. When we ordered, we ordered the cheesy taters and the grits with mushrooms and biscuits. I only tried the grits because it was one of the few vegetarian items on there. I do not regret it at all!!!!! That was one of the best breakfast dishes that I have ever eaten. Skillet is one of my favorite places to check out for brunch, and has always been consistently delicious for me! From the adorable little skillet used as the door handle, to the ever changing rustic menu, every touch here is truly a delight. If you're worried about parking there is not a parking lot but there is plenty of free street parking on the road. You could also park at Giant Eagle just a ways up. I recently came here with a couple of friends around 11:30AM on a Saturday which is one of their busier times. Despite the place being very small and cozy on the inside we only had about a 10 minute wait. The downside is that you have to wait outside since there isn't room indoors (so weather wise this could turn into a problem), but the plus side is they had a free coffee stand outside for you to help yourself! Nice touch. After a small cup of coffee we were seated at a smaller table outside. Our waitress came shortly after and she was super nice and helpful (we even joked about being Yelpers!) and allowed us enough time to peruse the menu. We all ended up ordering the same thing, the Chicken and Andouille Gravy & Biscuits, and some Cheese Taters for the table. The Chicken and Andouille Gravy and Biscuit was absolutely delicious and quiet hearty. Definitely enough to fill up and still have enough to take home! The Cheese Taters were gooey and delicious and had a nice kick with the fresh chunks of jalapeño! I've also had the Griddled Cinnamon Roll here in the past which is a large cinnamon roll cut in half and warmed up on the grill with syrup and powdered sugar on top! It's a MUST try, but I would recommend splitting it with at least one other person as it is quite indulgent and sugary for the morning. We like to explore Columbus for new brunch and coffee spots and came across Skillet. I had the cinnamon roll latte - it was decent. Both my husband and I had the duck confit hash. Unfortunately, the duck was over cooked and the dish was underwhelming. Also, the ambiance and seating was just less to be desired. This was definitely one of those "we came, we saw, we won't be returning" experiences. I understand Covid has affected many businesses, but many have found effective ways to mitigate the problem, I think they could use some help in that area. I had the turkey and bean soup, one of the best I've ever tasted and the omelette that was equally amazing. My friend had the scallops and grits that was truly yummy. Skillet is a quaint restaurant with simple yet elegant American food. I visited for Saturday brunch. I got the Piemento burger, recommended by our server, and my girlfriend got the Russian hash. We split the cheese taters. Despite Skillet not being a burger joint, the Piemento burger was one of the best burgers I've had. The medium rare patty, the toasted buns, and the creamy spread along with fresh vegetables combined for an exquisite taste. It was a little difficult to eat due to its size, but I was able to manage (definitely not a first date meal). The Russian hash and the cheese taters were also excellent. I didn't feel like any of the items were unique or rare, but they all seemed to hit the foundations well. This is a great place for anyone looking for a luxurious American brunch. read more
