I was the only customer and I sat there for over a minute before she would even look up and acknowledge me. then she ask what I wanted and I ordered she was extremely rude and then her friends came up while I was waiting on my order and she continued to tell her friends how she cannot wait to get off of work and how she hated all the old people that are ordering, and she can't stand them. Sorry, but you are making Polish dinners. That's your clientele old people that you hate, and then I ordered a all white meat dinner apparently they cannot tell the difference between thighs and breasts, I paid an up charge for an all white dinner and got two thighs. and I thought a Polish dinner came with Polish sausage. "Christmas Dinner 2025!" We catered in (picked up aluminum trays of food) of the Polish Dinner items except for the chicken. Food was fabulous, and couldn't have asked for a better tasting meal. Only drawback was when we put the aluminum trays in our chaffing servers and put water in them, we found that they had holes in each of them and leaked all over our counter. Thankfully, we had the large replacement aluminum "pans" and a small crisis was averted. Other than that, we have absolutely no complaints about getting future food orders from the Skillet. P.S. A few extra rolls with the carry out order would have been nice. read more

Drove a half hour to dine at their buffet this afternoon and we even checked their website to confirm their hours of operation. Upon our arrival we came to discover the door was locked. Someone came to the door and said they were open for "curbside only". If you're going to change your business model and how you operate it is imperative to update your website accordingly. This place use to be so good in the 90's and then it became a dump under new ownership. Now, the service is always terrible, the food is either always luke warm or has hair in it, and the place is a dump. I miss the old Skillet. Stay far away unless you want food poisoning. read more

Like hundreds of other folks, we decided to do the Easter drive-thru during COVID-19. We thought we were smart going early (around 10:30), but everyone else had the same idea. We ended up waiting in line for about 2 1/2 hours. Once we got through the line, the ordering process was friendly and efficient. We picked up three polish dinners ($11 each) which included two pieces of chicken, polish sausage, noodles, mashed potatoes, green beans, roll and cookie. Huge portions for the price. Everything reheated well several hours later at home (thank you air fryer!). We also picked up some meals for friends which included the Easter dinner for $15 - also seemed like a generous portion for the price. Nothing fancy (and I haven't actually visited the dining room), but they definitely have the drive thru service down during this challenging time. read more

Wow, I moved away from South Bend 30 years ago. Back then, The Skillet was a good restaurant. My mom loved eating there. I never dreamed they'd still be in business when I recently moved back to SB. Tonight, I was wanting some home cooking, without me cooking, in googling places I ran across The Skillet. Anyhow tonight was Swiss Steak or Polish sausage. I chose Swiss Steak, mashed potato's & green beans. Just finished eating and wanted to share my experience. The drive thru service was fast and very friendly. The food amazing. The food here is lousy. Poor imitation of a polish style dinner and all other daily specials are not good at all. The only saving grace for this place is they do have fantatic Chicken Noodle soup. So guess what they pulled off the menu. They also advertise on their web site an American goulash but again a no show or never has been. Enough said, you have been advised. read more

I got their Thanksgiving dinner and OMG..it was just like my grandma cooked it!! The turkey was so tender and the ham was absolutely delicious!! Went here for Thanksgiving about 10 years ago with my now departed father. Seating was long picnic tables. Food was all soggy, prices high for food quality. Think its called polish style cooking, but St Hedwigs has the real deal on that style. If you ever get invited to a wedding reception at St. Hedwigs, go. You will get hearty correctly prepared polish pesent food. Hope the new owners here have made improvements. read more

The fish dinners were not worth 15 dollars. they were dry overcooked fish sticks,.. and they might have been cooked yesterday. The batter was hard . I ended up throwing away. I tend to hold back on 5 star reviews, but we've been here many times and liked it so much we had them cater our wedding. Their event coordinating staff was fantastic, covered every detail from the food to table linens and even hosted a free, full meal for us and our immediate family to sample anything on the menu we'd were interested in having at our wedding reception. They were exceptional at the reception itself as well and we received lots of compliments and overheard several people saying things like, "Oh they got the Skillet to cater? Yesssss!". We've been coming here for the occasional dine-in experience and ordering ahead for family holiday parties for a long time and will continue to do so. Highly, highly recommend. read more

Ive been to eat the polish buffet once, the restaurant could use a remodel badly. The buffet was medoicre overall. Friday this week we ordered the tailgate special for carry out. 20 pc broasted chicken and 2 lbs polish sausage. The chicken is good and the special is a good value. their mashed potatoes are usually really good... everything else in my experience is poorly executed over starched and the demographic in the dining room leans towards octagenarian. tl;dr. I had my best Thanksgiving in memory because of the Skillet! A typical holiday meant me preparing food from early morning until mealtime while family and friends arrived just in time to enjoy it. This year my wife suggested taking advantage of the Skillet's Thanksgiving Dinner Take Home Package and what a great decision that was! With 12 people to feed I decided to opt for 2 plans, turkey and ham and we ended up with lots and lots of leftovers. We enjoyed 11 lb. of turkey with delicious dressing and gravy, several great side dishes and 2 pies. The chocolate cream pie was a bit disappointing but the pecan pie was outstanding. My wife has already circled her choices for the Skillet's Family Christmas Dinner so I guess our planning is done! I'm looking forward to another relaxed and delicious Christmas dinner. read more

First time there and the staff couldn't be friendlier or more accommodating!! I was with my elderly aunt so it was difficult getting up and down the stairs but everyone was willing to help. Limited menus but the Polish buffet was delicious. We did the one plate version and were full and content when we left with a bill for less than $20. Well...I am 1/4 Polish and my Great Grandparents immigrated here from Poland. Let's just say that they would roll in their graves (to use an old cliche). I live about an hour from a "good" Polish buffet in Lynwood, IL called the Warsaw Inn. When I drove by The Skillet, and saw "LEGENDARY POLISH BUFFET" I had to try it! Basically, everything to eat was terrible. The waitstaff, and who I believe is the owner, were all very nice and the people around me were ranting about how great everything was! I couldn't find it in my heart to complain. It was your average, family owned buffet with cheap food and about as Polish as KFC is. Pierogis were deep fried?? They also had some type of cream sauce for them, which was a lot like Alfredo sauce... no idea here... Honestly, best thing there was BBQ rib tips...Also not even a little Polish. Haha. Golabki (stuffed cabbage) was not terrible, but not good..if that makes sense. "Potato pancakes" were hash browns smashed together... Everything was canned/frozen except the fried chicken which also was flavorless. It was two ingredients. Chicken and Flour. That's it. No seasonings. Just sad really. Food was either cold or dried up to a crisp... Yet there was a line to get in here. Only reason I left 2 stars instead of 1 was because they were all so nice. read more

For a place that has boasted & been voted "Best Polish Dinner" I was not impressed at all. We went because we saw they were rated to have one of the best burgers within 100 miles. We ended up getting the Polish Buffet. We should have stuck with the burger plan. The "award winning" Polish buffet had: no fried chicken, only baked & broasted, the Pierogi were random, you didn't know what flavor you were going to get (scary), Polish sausage was flavorless, and the potato pancakes were not what I grew up with in a Polish household. I asked for real butter for them out of the kitchen, not "honey butter" cup packs (yuck) and that took about 15 minutes to achieve. The potato pancakes that were in the steamtable stayed and stayed. The ones in when we arrived were old & nasty, and the ones brought out were not much better. In summary, I will never be back for the Polish buffet...ever. read more

Good luck if you're a vegetarian. Maybe you can stick out your tongue and sprinkle a little salt on it, because that's about the only non-meat thing you'll eat here. I like how old school and falling apart it seems. I like how my dear friend Esther spends each Lent obsessing over which Friday fish fries she'll attend. For some reason, I associate her obsession with the Skillet, maybe because she told me about it here. Or maybe it's because they advertised a Lenten Friday fish fry here when we lived in South Bend. My son and I enjoyed the breakfast buffet, after much anticipation due to all the good reviews we'd heard from friends. We had waffles, made to order omelets, crepes, bacon, sausage, potatoes & biscuits and gravy. Service was excellent. The young man who was working the breakfast buffet is attending Ivy Tech studying culinary arts; he was very pleasant and professional. The staff seemed to enjoy the patrons and each other. Went this past Saturday and what a disappointment. The quality of the food went way down. The sausage was dry, the sweet sour cabbage was close to inedible, the brosted chicken seemed old. The help was slow to refill drinks, and the one lady who is someone to do with the owners stood looking at our empty glasses and just turned and went into the kitchen. This was a place I looked forward to eat at when I came to town but now I need to find a new polish buffet. read more

All this for $8 to $10. Not really cholesterol friendly, but a tasty feast. It's all you can eat, by the way. Individual meals off the menu as also available at a likewise reasonable price.
