UPDATE: I realize I haven't updated this review, and fairness demands I should. For several months, I had to come to this area to help care for elderly parents. This place became a refuge for me, and I have noted they have improved quite a bit. Execution of the food has really improved, and the staff works hard and makes it clear they appreciate your business. The restaurant is still a bit old, but they've done a lot to clean it up where they can. It is no longer 'grotty'. I'd call it clean and 'well loved'. Recommend, and thank you to the management and staff for hanging in there and making this location once again a place a person would like to visit! read more

I was so excited to find this location! We used to have a Skippers in Lacey so I went here a lot growing up. It was just as good as I remembered and everything was super fresh. (Almost too piping hot!) my kids loved feeling like they were on a boat! the two guys working were very friendly and helpful too. Ordered delivery ( uber) expectation wasn't high but in hotel and craving fish and chips. Got family meal with chowder( had choice or coleslaw) and still recieved coleslaw too.,and fries. Fish light ,flavorful, and so crispy even on delivery. Chowder ,creamy deliciousness. Fries,a little undercooked in my opinion, didn't eat them,but so much food we couldn't possibly. First time EVER visiting this location after driving by it for 30-40 years or however long it's been there. I was welcomed immediately by the 2 guys working there on a Sunday evening. I was in my weekly mood for fish and chips and happened to be across the street. Before stopping in, I checked Yelp reviews and their Skippers Puyallup website. They have halibut and cod but don't mention what they use for regular fish. Turns out it's Pollock. No thanks. I went with the 4 piece cod and fries. Both were scorching hot when brought to my table. That was nice. The place was clean, and the fish themed decor was a nice touch. BUT... the cod was NOT worth $16.99 or even half that! Although it was breaded and cooked to perfection on the outside, the inside was VERY mushy and soggy! Sure, it tasted like cod, but it was like eating mashed potatoes! No flakyness at all. I was pretty disappointed in the price I paid, more than Ivars with less pieces of fish! At Ivars you can feel and see the flakes in their fish. Not here. At least not MY order! I really wanted to eat here again but my first impression makes me get second thoughts. If I do return it certainly won't be for cod and chips. The 2 stars are for the crew who were great! However, the food was not good. Pretty sure they use frozen fish that you get from the grocery stores, as they were familiar triangles. I wasted $20 on frozen fish triangles and overly salty chowder. I should have known since the place did not smell like a seafood restaurant. Stopped in while I was in the area for a quick bite and bringing back memories when I was a kid. The all you can eat fish, chips and chowder on Tuesday and losing count of how many times I refilled my order. I digress, the restaurant on the outside definitely needs a little work and it looks like it has seen it's better days. The inside is very welcoming and looking like it has been maintained well. The crew behind the counter was friendly and very helpful. The chowder is pretty much how I remember it, pretty good but definitely not top shelf. The fish was for some reason a bit sweet and very off putting. I found out that I could have asked for the beer battered fish instead, now I know and so do you. Fish quality is okay, and a better than the fish sticks from the school cafeteria. If I find myself in the area on a Tuesday, I might try to break my old record for all you can eat. read more

First off their discount Tuesday fish and chips makes my day! It had been a while since I ate at skippers and it tastes like they changed their batter, the fillets seem smaller too. Maybe I always get something different then the one I got on Tuesday, normally I am used to big flat fillets that have panko style breading. But this was small and square and frankly not nearly as good. Their clam chowder still slaps tho. I just wish they had a better system cause I hate waiting forever for a two piece refill. Nice to see a classic old school chain restaurant still in our Puyallup neighborhood. Hadn't been in few years only because we moved away for 5 yrs. but now back. Went for all you can eat Tuesday special at noon now $16.99. Was $12.99 last visit 7 yrs. ago but realize everything is higher unfortunately. The place looked a bit more updated, cleaner than remembered. The cement floors are better than old worn carpet. The two staff members ( assuming one was owner) both very personable and attentive. Food came out pretty quickly, hot, fresh and crisp. Chowder still very satisfying w/ good clam taste no bacon thankfully. Slaw still tasty, fries hot and crisp just wish salt was applied straight out of fryer so it adheres. Fish light and flaky, done right. I personally prefer beer batter but don't think Skippers has ever offered that, not a huge issue as everything made for a pleasant lunch experience. Just a suggestion, with the $17-19 AYCE fish/chip price now I think including a fountain drink or even a sweet treat (soft serve?) would be more of a draw to people spending that much per person. If you lived in the Seattle area in the 80's you know Skipper's. My brother and sister claimed to both know a girl named Stone and that her dad was either the owner or CEO at the time. We often dined there for AYCE. Now, I hate seafood, but my parents would force me to eat at least one piece, then I could enjoy bottomless fries. That also made me the official refill boy meaning any time they needed another backet, I was their runner. I'll never forget the day they added fried chicken, at that point we weren't going twice a month, but there was finally something on the menu I could enjoy. 15 years ago, I left Bellevue and moved to Renton at that time a Skipped was located down the street, but it went to dry dock about 2013. A friend of mine mentions Skippers often, but he is on of those guys that just doesn't venture out of his area, so this location would never pop up on his radar. The surprise on his face as we pulled into the lot was worth the 35-minute drive. We both had a 3 piece, but he spiked his with clam chowder as well. Of course, he had fish, and I had chicken strips. I had read the reviews ahead of time and most people are praising not only this place, but the employees. The health department gave these guys an excellent health rating and when we entered the place at least 2 employees gave a a welcome worthy of a $200 steak house. The service was flawless and the friendliest service I have had in my long history of fast food, and possibly fine dining as well. M friend loved his fish and could not stop talking about it. The chicken was bland and flavorless. Unfortunately, that's what you get with most Food Service chicken, but I encourage ownership to look for another vendor, I've been to burger joints that serve strips that are flavorful and juicy, could give Ezell's a run for their money. I'll give the place4 stars. They probably deserve 5 for service alone, but that chicken was a 1/5 and I can't ignore that. Love fish, shrimp, or clams. I think my family cried a little when we walked in the door. Skippers was a mainstay fast food treat growing up and everyone was devastated when they vanished from Oregon. We'd been toying with the idea of tracking down one of the last ones standing for years and finally did it recently. The restaurant was clean, the workers were exceptionally friendly and attentive, and the food was very good. Is it fine dining? No. But it absolutely is close enough to the hyped up memories of Skippers past to make everyone in the party happy and for us to make a stop whenever we're up north. read more

Ever since the new owners took over this is GREAT. I mean, it's fast food that's deep fried. This is a review of that not a comparison to five star dining at a Michelin starred restaurant. The interior is refinished and I finally feel like I am entering a food establishment instead of a halfway house that serves food. Everything is piping hot and the portions are plenty. The boys and I had a few bowls of chowder which is great. We got a mix of fish, chips, and fries. Everything tasted fresh. The experience and staff were all nice. Now this is not 'fast' food service you've come to expect at other area true fast food businesses. This is great food worth the extra wait. We have been going here for a long time. Puyallup location is very clean including the bathroom. Saturday staff go above and beyond to make sure all customers have a great experience. The fish is tasty, fries are ok. What I really recommend now is the shrimp they started serving about 2 weeks ago. Light breading, plump, great flavor, no tail, cooked perfectly. This was the place my dad would bring us as kids. I hated it at the time...I would have rather had a burger. I remember when all the Skippers disappeared and I thought at the time to my college age self, "good riddance!" Now here I am 15 years later wondering how I ended up back here. Being an American male, I tend to like fried things. Turns out I also love seafood! So what was I thinking as a kid when I didn't want to eat here? Now as an adult, I can see what I was missing. I was pleased to find that there are still a few Skippers left. So after a trip to Mt Rainier, my friend and I were looking for a place to eat. Somehow this place showed up on the way back to Seattle. Coincidence? Hmm, I wonder. So we showed up and were immediately greeted by the nicest guys. Definitely people who enjoyed their work. We ordered the Tuesday AYCE Fish and Chips and found a table. They were definitely doing their best to separate the tables. A family came in and after ordering, began pushing tables together. One of the guys behind the counter came over and said due to state and county regulations, they cannot have more than four people at a table. The people grumbled but the employee was super polite and professional. Now to the food! Excellent fish and chips all around. Fish was full of flavor and good for the price. Fries were crinkly and very good. Tartar sauce was spot on and reminded me of my childhood days of Dad dragging me to Skippers. I hadn't been to Skipper's for ages, and yesterday found myself at the Quilt Barn in Puyallup, so decided to go back a couple of blocks to Skipper's for my dinner. This place never disappoints! Brought my food home and it was still hot and yummy (30 minute drive). Even today my left over fish was perfect. I'm sad that I can't call out the owner's name. He has run this franchise for years and is so friendly and personable. Keep up the great work! I did drive thru so can't speak to interior, but know they remodeled a couple of years ago, and it was always very tidy. read more

I was eager to get home and try the chowder but to my dismay there was a black curly hair in the chowder as I was pouring some out into another bowl. I was so disappointed and disgusted!! 35 years ago, Skippers was our favorite. Today, the Puyallup location didn't disappoint. Austin was a great one man band -- front counter, drive thru, chef and server. The fish has a different breading, but is perhaps better with its crispy exterior and moist interior. The chowder hasn't changed in 40 years. And the coleslaw is still the best of any restaurant I've tried. It's a treat to visit skippers and enjoy a trip back to memory lane. Well done. read more
