Fish is good but really poor value. 20 bucks for a 4 piece Cod and chips. Really small pieces of fish. Card machine prompts for a tip.... another negative.... Fries are good and they didn't skimp there. read more

The first time we visited we got the halibut fish and chips, they were delicious and the sauces were amazing too. The second time we came it was more like the rest of the reviews. We got the Cod Fish and Chips this time and they were so greasy, so slimy. They only had tartar sauce this time, they were out of the other sauce. We forced ourselves to eat it because we didn't want to waste the money but we should've just thrown it away because both of us felt bloated and gross after. Their seasonal blackberry and basil milkshakes are amazing, however that teeny cup is NOT worth $9 (I think they were 16oz?). I started making them at home for a fraction of the price. The first time we came it was great, but after this second experience, we aren't risking it again. read more

A year ago I gave 4 stars. The fact saw 40% to 50% increase in less than a year makes it not worth it. Especially for a walk up place Kids meal was less $8 now $12 (okay $11.99) That is 50% up charge and now no drink that used to have. The dishes that were $11.99 are now $16.99. If I wanted these prices I'd go to a nice sit down at Fish Peddler for better food and full service read more

My wife and I come here every time we're in Ruston. It's a little pricey, but their halibut fish and chips are the best in town. Perfectly cooked and very well seasoned. If only it wasn't so pricey. Regardless, I'd recommend it to anyone and everyone. read more

A nice, quick, and convenient place to grab food when you're hanging out in the area. I was with my cousin and her two kids, and my dog, so it was nice to grab food and enjoy outside without having to find a restaurant to dine in. I got the Calamari and Chips, and it was good and pretty fulfilling. read more

Not our first choice but all the local restaurants were too busy. Was pleasantly surprised. The cod fish and chips were delicious. Light and crispy and flaky. The French fries were also quite good. Blueberry basil lemonade was refreshing. Slightly sweet and slightly tart. read more

This is revision to my first review, today while in the area I stopped and they were finally open! I have to say this was TOTALLY worth the wait! First, the young lady answered all my questions and was knowledgeable about the best choices for what I wanted. The menu was small but in a good way, they do fish, and they do chips, I saw a chowder and like one or two other things on the menu, GOOD, play to your strengths! The fish tasted fresh, and we watched them hand batter it, I went for the four piece because usually these places skimp a little, NOT HERE, I was stuffed after the second piece! I want to give a shout out to their fries too, these are exactly the kind of fries I love, and they are fresh and well seasoned. Last the vibe was Poppin, this whole little area reminding me of L.A. very vibrant and full of life, people hanging out, socializing. This is the kind of place I moved back to the city to be part of. I currently have "what a catch" tied with first place for my favorite fish and chips. read more

I love that they put up a casual fish stand right outside of Wildfin! This place is perfect for a quick casual lunch, and has a good variety of options! I really enjoyed my fried cod, and the French fries were good too! The packaging gets bonus points, I'm a sucker for good presentation. I'm holding back of 5 stars because they didn't have lemon or salt, which was weird for a fish shack. Also, we had heard that the chowder was a specialty but upon sample it was cold, so we had to miss out there. I have to give a special shout-out to the blackberry basil lemonade, it was perfect for the sunny day and fried lunch. I would definitely come here again! read more

Used to love this fish bar as it's a great location but last night we got the cod and chips. The fish was overcooked and was so rubbery it was uneatable. For $20 a plate I would expect a lot better quality. The fries were good. But I don't think I would get fish here again. read more

The sun is definitely out today, so we decided to take a walk around Ruston! This place caught our attention and I've been craving some good fish and chips. It is just a little shop, with a few workers so I could imagine it being busy. I wouldn't go here if you're in a rush though because they do cook and prepare your food by order, or is what it seems. It took like 15 minutes for our order. The girl taking our order was very friendly, and quick! We got the Calamari & chips, and also the 3 piece Cod and Chips. The fries are seasoned to perfection! I was not a fan of the cod because it didn't have much taste to the batter, and it was fried, crispy enough. It didn't even really taste like it was battered. Looking at the photos, the definitely didn't batter mine... As you can see in the photo, it still has some white on it. The size of the fish was REALLY small for $17...The calamari was pretty good though. I could tell it was fresh, the taste and the batter wasn't for us. It didn't really have the crispness that it should've had. The drink we got was the basil lemonade and it was just over powering in sweetness. I would give this place a try again one day, maybe they just didn't have a good day. read more

Was very disappointed with our order today. Co Pared to previous summers, they've cut their portions by more than half. As you can see in my photo, there is barely any fish, and the fish that's in there is just scraps. It's mainly sauce inside the tortilla. And the price- I understand that there is a markup because it's on the waterfront, but even with that taken into consideration paying that much for this is outrageous. I don't know if this is just because these teenage boys were not properly taught how to make a taco or what, but pending some major change we won't be coming back anymore. Major bummer. read more

So sad, this place used to be one of our fave places in Ruston to grab a bite to eat outside while enjoying the weather and views... I actually laughed at the size of the fish in my two piece fish n chips for $12.99... Not much bigger than a nugget from McDonalds and to make it even worse the fish wasn't flaky and white, the batter had no flavor and was so unbelievably greasy that's all I could taste. I usually love the fries dipped in the yummy aioli sauce but the fries were also a soggy greasy mess. After waiting 10 mins for them to refill the aioli container they were inedible... So glad I didn't spend an extra $5 on the halibut. I would have been livid! Come on "What a Catch", you're right on the water with fresh fish and a very limited menu... You literally have one job to do and you are not getting that right anymore! I won't be back or referring anyone there until they step up their game! read more

Really excellent fries, the fish comes out piping hot and they use a really nice batter. I can't really recommend the blackberry basil lemonade, the basil doesn't really work. The Aioli they have is also great on fries or fish! Only wish they would add cocktail sauce. Great little stop for takeaway! read more

This spot always has a line out in front and I always thought because Point Ruston is always busy on the weekends and full of people and I was assuming Wow they must have amazing fish and chips. For the record their fish and chips are very good. The beer battered fish had the pow factor flavor and the fries were the slightly battered type and delicious. Portion size was on par for an average person. The service was just ok. I was slightly annoyed that everything besides the fish and chips were unavailable when my friend tried to order extras. I was even more annoyed that this wasn't marked on their chalk board menu. I mean how hard is it to use a piece of chalk to cross out an item? read more

For years every time we were at Ruston Way, Tacoma, we had a guilty pleasure eating at What a Catch. And we loved it, but recently their food quality started to go down. Last time we had fish and chips at What a Catch, the fries were way overcooked crispy on the outside like they supposed to be but on the inside they were dry and not fluffy. COD and halibut were greasy and dry on the inside. But the aïoli and tartare sauce as always amazing. But I didn't go there to eat sauce. I don't know if it's staff don't know how to cook or the equipment set up to wrong. It used to be busy on the weekends but last few times there was a small line. It is a shame but I don't think we will be eat there again because for the price there are better places to eat end enjoy the fish and chips. I hope What a Catch will take this in consideration and fix this problem. read more

The service was good and I love their blackberry basil lemonade, but I'm extremely disappointed in the bahn mi cod taco I recieved. The prices are higher in the shop than they are listed online so I paid nearly 12 dollars for a single taco with two tiny pieces of cod. And they wrapped it to make it look much fuller than it was. I basically got two bites of cod that was so overcooked it was like jerky to eat, and then the rest was just a tortilla full of coleslaw. I had walked away from the shop to eat, but if I had stayed nearby I would have asked for a refund. read more

5 stars for the calamari, 3 stars for the halibut fish and chips* The calamari here is amazing. It's thick and lightly battered, seasoned nicely. It comes with jalapeños that complement the rest of the fried goodness. Came back on a Saturday around 1pm and they ran out of calamari... how??! So that was very disappointing. We opted for the fish and chips. The halibut was very over cooked, so the cod was better. The chips that come with the calamari basket are also crispier cause they don't have the weight of fried fish on top of them. read more

Wish I could get away with giving zero stars. Don't bother with this place, and maybe it will give them time to get their act together and make their food worth it. Their employee taking orders was absolutely not helpful with any questions we asked and said "I don't know" to all of them. The man making the food very audibly said G** D***** in front of my children and others. The pieces of fish are teeny tiny, my taco was swimming in an absurd amount of sauce which made it completely fall apart all over my hands. Their bar tables to stand at had bird poop on them and clearly hadn't been cleaned in a long time. We won't be back. read more

What a cute little shop. There were some oddities this morning, but what sane person orders fish and chips at 11am? Usually the line is super long and the sun is just beating down on you when you want to eat here, but this morning we got lucky! Ordered the fish and chips. They offer cod or halibut. They use a strawberry/ berry container for your food, how freaking cute is that? To my surprise the meal was very filling. Oil was clean, fish came out crispy and meaty! I loved the jalapeño aoli, and they have little containers for the sauces. Soda fountain offered, convenient. Will have to try their milkshakes for next time. If you don't want to stand at the tables, there are benches more inside the farellis area and outside near the water. read more

This Fish and Chips walk up bar has been at Ruston Point for a while but it was only this weekend where I finally made it here to try out their food. It's not a sit down and dine in kind of place. You order up at a stand and then you either take your food to go or e stand and eat at several of the tables that are in the vicinity. Prior to arriving I had fish and chips in mind but decided to go with their Crispy Cod Taco. I'm glad I did as I enjoyed all the fish taco ingredients and the deep fried cod was great. Very good! I had corn tortilla chips to go along with the taco and used their sauce station by utilizing their Jalapeño aioli sauce to seve as dip. Very good chips and dip pairing. This is a good place to go if you want to eat outside on a nice warm day and avoid the sit down restaurants nearby which could be more time consuming compared to this place which makes it more efficient if you have other things to do on your agenda. read more

Well, this place sounds like it was really good in the beginning, but has now gone down the tub. Why put basil in blackberry lemonade, only a very small percentage want basil in there lemonade, healthy yeah, but be real there here for fried fish and fries. Make it good, don't be cheap ass on your product, all orders should be hot and fresh, make it good Everytime and they'll keep coming back. read more

My husband and I left soon after ordering when I saw the fry cook use the same gloves to handle raw battered fish and cooked fish/fries. He left raw batter on the paper liners and cardboard baskets and I'm surprised no one else seemed to notice. The sauces also did not look appetizing in the sun. read more

The Daily Catch is a lovely little walk up store right by the water. It was a beautiful day to sit outside and enjoy some fish! What I ordered: the coconut shrimp basket was very good! It was just nothing spectacular. I enjoyed it. The basket came with a decent amount of food. I had heard so much about the fish here so maybe my expectations were too high. Still a good meal. I will note that the service was good! They were very busy and there were only 2 guys working. They were nice and did their best. There are some standing tables around the restaurant. 3.5 stars Small portions for the price and staff were indifferent. $37 for a taco with fries, 3 piece cod with fries, side of chowder and two drinks. Food was served in berry baskets which was a cute touch. Taco was small but jalapeños packed a nice punch. 3 stars only because the quality of fish was good. Other than that, the portions have gotten so small that the price isn't worth it. My wife and I got the 2 piece halibut and the 2 pieces were no bigger than 2 chicken nuggets at McDonalds. This has been a change in the last year or so and very disappointing. Walk up and order vendor with outdoor standing tables. Got the banh-mi tacos (only came with 1 though), fries, and blackberry basil lemonade. Taco was okay, but wouldn't recommend the lemonade unless you really love basil. read more

The Halibut was fantastic. Big, flaky pieces. I definitely enjoyed them. I'll be back to try the tacos. Reasons it's not 5 stars: - It was an astoundingly long wait time for a counter service/takeout restaurant. It was long enough that I went back to the running store to chat with them and came back and there still were 2 people waiting in front of me. - The fries were WAY too salty. The cod is delicious but the pieces are on the small side and can vary a lot depending on the day. It's not a huge problem for me because I get full quickly but I can see other people being disappointed in the actual amount of fish they get vs the amount of fries. The aioli is good, but I would've liked some tartar sauce (they were all out at the self-serve sauce station and seemed to have no intention of refilling it). read more

I love eating here when I'm walking Ruston. I cannot resist eating a bowl of chowder at the waterfront. They go hand in hand, throw in fish and chips with a special drink (Italian kiss) perfection. The lines get very long and the wait can seem like forever but when I get my food its totally worth it. read more

After a fun day in Seattle, but not being able to find a place to eat without paying $35 to park or…read morefind a table (for a late lunch), I remembered that some friends of ours took us to an amazing seafood place in Tacoma right next to the water...but hidden away from all the large and corporate-type restaurants on Rustin Way. I couldn't remember the name of the place, but we found it: The Fish Peddler! We must have arrived at a perfect interval because there was a table for two that had just been bussed and ready for us near the large counter in the back where food was collected by servers and presented to hungry patrons at any of the 30-40 tables. Our server was genuinely warm and delightful and guided us to the menu and the on-line beer on tap information. Drinks were ordered and delivered in minutes - just enough time for us to announce our selections: A 3-piece halibut and chips for her, and for me, the albacore tuna with spring greens and gouda cheese on sourdough with a pint of I'm Not Afraid Of Music. It had the lowest alcohol content, and since I was driving, didn't want to push my luck. When our huge white dinner plates arrived - oh - did I mention the amazing jalapeño coleslaw? - we were amazed at the size of the perfectly deep fried halibut - which, on their own, provide a good bite, making only a smitten of tartar sauce necessary because you gotta have tartar sauce with fried fish, after all, right? I picked up one my sandwich haves and removed the toothpick with too much gusto and suffered a small splinter that I couldn't remove until I got home a couple of hours later with the help of a magnifying glass, a tweezer and some masking tape. But I ignored the splinter while I enjoyed my "this is NOT your mom's - or HER mom's - Tuna melt". The perfect balance of the albacore spread with the gouda showing up gloriously in almost every bite, the pillowy and cool greens and tomato slice that balanced the heat from the albacore between the two lightly toasted sourdough was my Valentine's Day gift to my mouth. This is a casual place, but the food is quality. We got the fish and chips, which were perfectly crispy. The black cod miso was superb. Very fresh and light and flaky and flavorful. We also got the lobster roll. It definitely rivals a lobster roll from the east coast. The service was great. They took care of everything well. This isn't fancy, but it's just a good seafood place for friends, business or families.
