The restaurant was very clean, well maintained, and organized with all the extras freely available (i.e. napkins, sauces, etc). I tried for the first time the Skrimp Shack. They have whiting fish; and it is good. I ordered coleslaw, fish, and shrimp to go. Everything was tasty. They do have plenty of seating, but when I went, customers were ordering takeout. I am pleased to know that there is a true fish joint in the Woodbridge area that sells whiting. read more

I love this place! I came to the small town of Dumfries to visit some friends recently, and one of the best restaurants in that small town was this place, the Skrimp Shack. How could I possibly turn down coming to a place like this? I didn't. We come here for dinner the very first night I got into town. It's a small, counter service restaurant in a strip mall. No big crowds, just walked up to the counter and looked at the menu. There was an impressive amount of seafood on the menu! I had never really analyzed seafood availability in this New England area before, but they had plenty of options for me. I came from the Gulf Coast where you could find it pretty readily, and then I moved to the landlocked Orlando, so this was a fun surprise for me. I weighed some pros and cons, and I ultimately decided to get a nice skrimp basket. About a dozen perfectly fried skrimps with some nice sweet potato fries. Nothing was oily. Everything was crispy. Skrimps were plump and cooked well. I was very happy. I also got to try the mac 'n' cheese side, it was exactly what you would expect. Add some pepper on top and it's perfect. I also got the sweet tea to drink. Very sweet. As a Southerner, it was very satisfying. Overall, I was very happy and I think the Skrimp Shack represented Dumfries very admirably. Probably my first and last time visiting this restaurant. Upon receiving the notification that my food was ready, I observed the young man slamming the fry basket against the trash can and what appeared to be food or something that came out of the fryer. Anyways got my order without checking. 15 minutes into my drive I decided to try the food and nearly got in to an accident. I was very displeased with what I saw and after tasting it, I wanted to vomit because it was way over cooked to a crisp and extremely greasy. Wow, fried and grilled seafood with many options! Choose from plates or baskets of fish, shrimp and oysters. Sides are Mac and cheese, fried okra, fries, collard greens, potato salad and cole slaw. Arrived with carload of cranky kids, en route from NJ to NC. Left satisfied and full of delicately fried okra, shrimp and catfish. The Po' boy sauce was delicious. Wish I had realized I could have requested a grilled basket, as it was a lot of fried food at once--but really delicious. Also wish that the family bundles had been on the stationary menu rather than the digital rotating menu, as we saw it only after we had ordered an assortment of meals. Franchise might need to check on the wood surfaces, which I believe were sticky from the finish on the wood degrading. Visited 4 times actually made it to the register ONCE and that visit will be the review of the food so here goes. Whiting and "Skrimp" dinner with puppies and slaw. The fish was perfectly breaded and fried. It was delicious as was the shrimp. Hush puppies were the best I've ever tasted. They were light and flavorful. Not the gut bombs I expected. The slaw was nice and wet with a hint of vinegar but not overpowering. Overall a delicious fish and shrimp dinner. So why the 3 stars? Ok was offered extra tartar sauce got home had zero but did have a red cocktail sauce which was ok but not to be used on whiting. Didn't feel like driving all the way back so.... like I said been there 4 times. They need to do something about the line. 3:30 on a Saturday and 2 pm on a Friday and 40 and 25 people in line respectively. The other visit was a Saturday evening at 6 and couldn't get in the door. Maybe open another register, take pick-up orders by phone with a second register. Glad that your popularity is good but that will wane as people get tired of waiting in line. I was spending some time down in Dumfries and figured I'd checkout Skrimp Shack because who doesn't like shrimp??? There were so many options on the menu that looked good it took me a while to decide. I ultimately got the "Skrimp and Crabmeat Poboy." I also got an order of hush puppies. I did not regret my selection. They did not hold back on the shrimp or the crab on this poboy. I only wish I had asked for extra sauce, that's the only thing it felt like they held back on. The food is good. However, the last two times have been unpleasant to say the least. I am going to try and be nice as possible as my experience with the staff has been unpleasant. The service, especially from the stocky old black lady with dreads has been extremely displeasing and unwelcoming. On December 12, at around 8pm, I was waiting for my order and as she was walking by, she was staring at me with disgust and said "why do i look like that?" in a disrespectful manner. This lady is unprofessional to say the least. The nerve of her to speak about another customer's appearance shows the lack of professionalism that she has. Today, I picked up my order and told the staff my name five times in which they kept asking me over and over again. I repeatedly told them what I ordered and my name too many times. The black lady with the dreads came over to me and once again asked for my name in which I told her and even told her what I ordered. At this point, I am getting irritated because if a customer has told an employee their name, why ask them again and look at them like they are lying? After repeat myself again, She slams my food and cup on the counter and walks away. I have no idea what her issue is or why she is still working there but at the end of the day, management needs to reconsider this employee. read more

I decided after all these years to go. I should have kept driving, far far away. I would have been better off eating the photos of their food on google. Let me first say the man taking the order was very friendly. The food (catfish basket): COLD, soggy, flimsy catfish and that lacked flavor and crisp, the COLD shrimp was ok at best, the "mac n cheese" was COLD and pasty (extremely pasty like patch a hole in a tire glue) and the fries which was the only item that was hot and actually the best item of all the others. The price ($23) and wait (20 minutes) would not have been a problem if the food was at the least hot or had flavor. Waiting that long for food that was cold is an issue. Also, if you ask for my name, I assume you'll be calling my order by name. Instead numbers were called and of course I had not been given a recept so I had no number. This place is a nice find. I came in after seeing this place and reading a few reviews. The line was literally out the door which is normally a positive sign (it could be due to the first Friday in lent) but I suspect these are repeat customers The shrimp and catfish basket was pretty good; the shrimp I really liked. Nicely battered and perfectly fried. The catfish while I wish it had a little more seasoning beyond the four used, i again wished they could have given the whole filet instead of cutting it up. The fries were decent and thick cut but again lacked any noticeable salt beyond what I could add I'm assuming it was old bay or season salt on the table. The po boy (and my guest is from NOLA) isn't bad. It was filled pretty well with shrimp and crab and the Hoogie roll was decent to make it a little more authentic toasting it would elevate the sandwich. Hush puppies were Where they fell short was the grilled scallops. The scallops were grossly over cooked and a beyond seared--#theywereburned I told the manager they were over cooked and were not eaten and while he apologized he didn't offer any concessions. I don't think I will be coming back here again...as you can see from the picture the lunch portion is kind of lacking. With only able to get on side they could at least give you more. Also got the "banana pudding" which came in a red solo cup with a top. Hardly any bananas and you can tell it was made from a can. The last time I had food here everything was made well. The cooks in the back no mask and seem like half of them didn't wear gloves. Or if they did gloves should have been changed more often. Just not up to par in my opinion. If this is supposed to be a soul food restaurant they need to put the cans down and actually cook. All sides still made with pork and I was told they from the can as well. read more
