I only gave 5 stars but they deserve 6 for their business ethics. They did a brake repair on my elderly car, and apparently installed a defective part that rapidly failed. So why a rave review? Because nobody is perfect --defective parts and human error happen. It's the response that's important. They did NOT lie to me, blame me, push responsibility elsewhere. They did NOT discuss cost -- just wrote EVERYTHING off (parts, labor, towing) without me saying anything. And I should mention -- the original problem was not easy to find (it came and went). Rather than use the opportunity to charge for unproductive searching, they were up-front and obviously interested in minimizing cost to me. Bad news: My car is old and things are wearing out. Good news: When repairs are needed, I know where I can get excellent and ethical service. That's why I have been taking my car there for years. And will keep doing so. read more

I read some of the positive reviews and had some repairs that needed to be done for one of my vehicles. Before diving in, I decided to get an oil change on another vehicle I own first, just to get an initial feel. I have always gotten conventional oil changes for the 7 years I have owned the vehicle. Without even asking, this garage did a synthetic oil change. What very much disturbed me is that they did this type of more expensive oil change without even consulting the person who brought the vehicle in or having them authorize it first. That said, this made me very uncomfortable and I don't want to pursue further repairs from this garage. read more

The manager who you will interact with was very manipulative and lied to me, the owner told me their mechanics are NOT ASE certified but the manager looked me in the eye and said they all are. He also told me there would be charges for things that I was told would not be charged and then made me uncomfortable about it. The mechanics were all very young and were always standing together hiding in the corner which was really weird. They didn't do what they said they would with my car and gave me excuses which were not true. Dealing with the manager was creepy. Part of my car they removed was missing and he gaslit me and told me it wasn't their fault, it must have been me! I have to see someone else to see if what they said they did was even done. I had a laundry list of repairs from my Toyota dealer but the two items that concerned me was I needed a new Battery & my Trans pan casket was "leaking." Since I work in Rosemont, I went on Yelp to find a car repair shop near work. I decided to give Skylark a chance. Warning: place is tricky to find. But when I walked in, I explained to Ted my two concerns. They were busy but he got back to me by 11am to tell me that my Battery was fine & I would not need to replace it until fall. Ted also told me that the "leak" my dealer warned me about was just a seepage. I could not believe his honesty. When I decided to get a Transmission service, it was 40% of the price my dealer was going to charge me. I am glad to have found an honest mechanic by work. I was referred by a friend. He said the shop gave good service and people are very honest. I brought my car in due to a noise (clunky) noise. I have been taking my car to Skylark for several years. They have been great. Until the last time I took the car in for an oil change. I asked them to please check my tires because the low air light was on. When I came to pick up my car after the oil change I again asked if they had checked my tires. The guy in the office told me they definitely did because that is part of the oil change. I got in my car and the low tire light was still on. I just went home and 2 days later I asked my nephew to check the tires and he said there were 2 tires that were extremely low and it was obvious nobody checked them. I realize this is not a big deal but it scares me now to wonder if they really do everything they say they are doing. I may have to go to Uptown Auto Repair that is further from my house. I live very close to Skylark so I am sad this happened. read more

This is a horrible place. They missed diagnosed my car several times. Broken parts during the process taken back time and time again just to end up with the same oil leak. I ended up losing more than $3000. dollars because of these people misdiagnosing the obvious issue. Also would not honor or even look at work they have done in the past that should have been covered under warranty. They think that they know it all and charge double the cost of what other shops charge. They have been trained to take your money regardless of whether or not the problem was solved. Joe charged a $100 dollars to install a battery that wasn't even properly secured to the car. Loose negative connection from car to battery. I could go on and on about the awful service. If you choose to use them. I would have it looked at by someone else immediately after you get the car back. read more

This morning my wife was on her way to work, or so she thought. She heard the car do an unusual hum and there was a huge puddle of oil below. As she backed out, it could not steer easily. I ended up driving her to work and on the way back I stopped here to check them out, since they are just 2 blocks away from home. I can't believe I never went here in all the time I've been in the neighborhood. This auto shop has been around for 43 years and Ted, the owner has been there 35 of those years. The shop has 6 bays, staffed by ASE-certified mechanics. It is also a block away from the Dee Road Metra station, which makes it commuter-friendly for daytime repairs. The name "Skylark" reminds me of the classic Buick model, which has discouraged me from coming here sooner. Living so close, I've seen a lot of vintage vehicles being worked on at this place. It appears to be a popular place to bring in classics for work to be done but they do all vehicles despite the name. I told Ted about my problem and he concluded it has to be the power steering pump. He handed me a quart of fluid and told me to top it off so I don't burn out the pump on the way to his shop. While it was a busy day for them and Ted could not guarantee the car would be ready by the end of the day, I got a call 2 hours later with an estimate and gave the OK. Just after lunch, I got the call the car was ready for pickup. Steering wheel turns smoothly and the new power steering pump lets the wheel turn easier than it has for some time now. It did not cost unreasonably more than it would elsewhere. Rather than going to a "Jiffy Mechanic" at one of those franchise outfits, I'd rather keep my business with an independent guy like Ted. And while you're there, check out his giant chocolate labrador who sits in a cage in his office. The dog was as tall as my 5 year old and maybe twice as heavy. Very nice doggie too. Based on the friendly service and quick turnaround, I'll be coming back here soon for a radiator flush on my other car and other routine work from now on rather than keep going back to the shop in my old neighborhood in Chicago. read more

When your check engine light comes on, get it checked immediately! Learned through Skylark once there is one code from a check engine light the computer will stop checking for other codes. I have been going here with all of my cars for 14yrs. They are always much cheaper than dealers and they do not fix stuff that doesn't need to be fixed. They completely explain what is wrong and what needs fixing and WHEN it needs fixing...either immediately, or if it can wait. Joe Milam is terrific. The service level at sky Lark Garage is amazing and the pricing is more than competitive. The repaired a leak in the transfer case of my Lexus RX350. Lexus had priced this repair at a substantially higher price. In makeing that repair they also determined that my transmission was damage and needed to be rebuilt. I had notice that the transission was not shifting properly, but I was hoping that it was my imagination. Not my imagination! They also made this repair at a price that ended up being lower than what they originally quoted. When does that ever happen?! We have brought in two of our cars over the past few weeks. In both cases the guys here could have really scammed us. Since we didn't know what was wrong with either car who knew what they'd come up with and how would you ever know if what they said was accurate? One car cost us $42 and the other one they diagnosed the problem, charged us about $40 for that (dealers charge at least double that) and suggested we visit our dealer since there had been recalls on the problem. Skylark is Definitely overpriced. I was just charged over $500 for a simple radiator job. No hoses replaced. Then I get home, and they didn't even top off the coolant. I had to add it myself. You would think after $500 they could have done that. read more

I would NEVER recommend this shop to anyone. I brought my vehicle in for a coolant leak that I was told was coming from the radiator and the owner Ted informed me that if he put this stop leak into the coolant it would resolve the problem. The leak stopped and everything seemed alright...now that winter came along I went to use my heat and it is not working. I took it to a local shop near my work and they looked the vehicle over. I later received a phone call with the shop informing me that I needed a heater core. I told them I had stop leak put in by another shop and they told me that is the reason why my heater core is clogged and my heat does not work. I got quoted $1300 for the repair they put a band aid over the problem and this will cost me 5 times more than it would have cost me from the beginning if they just replaced the radiator. read more
