We came into town to celebrate our daughter's birthday and she wanted to have her birthday dinner at Skyline. When I made the reservation I asked if possible to have a dessert with a candle and sure enough they did!! The food was incredible, the view is great and the staff are wonderful! We have eaten at the Skyline many times as we ALWAYS stay at The Virginian which is our favorite hotel. We LOVE the panko crusted oyster as an appetizer and last night we had the shrimp and grits. They were without a doubt the BEST we've ever had. We travel quite a bit and have tried shrimp and grits everywhere. The service is always great and the rest of the food is wonderful too. There is also an amazing outdoor area with fire pits to keep you warm and a panoramic view of the city. If you are visiting Lynchburg, it is a must see! read more

The outdoor patio was closed for service and we didn't have reservations. Fortunately a party was leaving the bar as we arrived. If we had a seat on the patio on a warm evening or just a better seat, my critique might be different. As it was we sat in front of the elevators and hostess station at the end of the bar. No t.v. screen to watch anything. Our view consisted of 3 small plants on a shelf. To add insult to injury, the young lady next to us who was just drinking water received more attention from all the waiters -- w/ elbows leaning on the bar -- than any other customer at the bar. I understand biology, but come on. Our tab was $60+, hers was $0. Time for some professionalism Skyline. The food was good, but too expensive for all we had to put up with. read more

My husband and I are staying at The Virginian for just one night and decided to check out this rooftop dining location since it is both convenient and looked like a fun experience. The rooftop restaurant is covered and offers a fabulous view of historic downtown Lynchburg. There is plenty of seating. Upon arriving, the host told us that there would be a wait of about 45 minutes. We expected this as we hadn't made a reservation and came around 6pm. We were seated at the bar while waiting and enjoyed the atmosphere and music in the meantime. Our wait only lasted about ten minutes, which was great! We decided to splurge on the Mezze Platter for an appetizer to share. For $24, we were underwhelmed by the selection of meats (salami and something that looked like olive loaf), as well as the cheeses (a small wedge of blue cheese and two small pieces of Brie). The stone-baked flatbread wedges were warm and delicious. The menu mainly had seafood options. Not a seafood lover myself, I chose the Skyline Burger which came with fries. The burger was advertised on the menu as having bacon, cheddar, caramelized onions, and a brioche bun. It did not end up coming with the onions, which was a little disappointing. The menu described the fries as "black pepper Parmesan fries", but they tasted like plain French fries to my husband and I, and were very lightly seasoned. My husband ordered the Honey Garlic Butter Shrimp with seasonal vegetables. He raved about the sauce and we both found the vegetables to be fresh and well prepared. When we needed a server to bring us things like glasses of water, the check, a condiment...we had to wait for several minutes to try to catch a waiter's eye. Not the best service. The food was decent but the service was horrible. We stayed at the Virginian and so went upstairs for dinner. This was a Monday night. We went up about 530pm. It was Monday so there was no one. Only 2 other tables when we arrived. It took over 40 minutes to get our Brie appetizer which WAS delicious but took forever. Entrees were another hour. We were finally eating our entrees about 715. WAY too long for food. Oddly - by the time we were wrapping up at 8pm the bar did start to fill up. Do yourself a favor and eat somewhere else. read more

While staying at the Virginian hotel, we went upstairs for drinks and a meal at Skyline. In a word, the service, ambiance, and food were perfect. Our bartender, Callie, was friendly and extremely accommodating. In fact, after we finished our drinks and moved to a table for dinner, she also waited on us and provided excellent recommendations and service. My wife had the mahi and said it was seasoned and cooked perfectly. I thoroughly enjoyed the mushroom stuffed trout with balsamic. I've caught, prepared, and eaten trout for decades and what Skyline served is the absolute best I've tasted. Our entire experience was perfect. Rooftop dining. Skyline is the rooftop bar / restaurant at the Virginian hotel and scores three solid stars for venue location and drinks. The location is nice but Skyline is not worthy of five stars, especially if you order food. The vibe is nice when you walk in - seating (tables) is available inside, outside and then some lounge style seating is available if you are looking for some couch / drink action. There is plenty of space between the tables, so kudos to them for not squeezing people in there like most roof-top places. The view is ok- it is Lynchburg and a little too far from the river to see anything of note unless you are into looking at fie escapes on the adjoining buildings. where it does score is on the fresh air / breeze / sunshine aspect of having a cocktail with friends of your significant other. All the fresh air in the world does not make up for the sub-par food however and Skyline suffers the same mediocre food as the William & Henry Steakhouse located on the ground floor. The menu can best be described as American and somewhat limited in offering- there is a little something for everyone on there: pizzas, salads and some sushi rolls are represented. We went with a charcuterie and some sushi rolls. The rolls, while large, were just about terrible - the tempura were premade and just tossed into the rolls, thus ensuring mushiness. The "surf & turf" tempura, in particular, at $23 (I believe) was just meh. All rolls essentially had the same taste. The charcuterie was plain and nothing special with three cheeses and three meats. The three cheeses consisted of a brie, a bleu cheese style offering, and what looked and tasted like a very mild sliced cheddar. Drinks were fine and well made- so no qualms there. Prices were higher than the average in the area, and when combined with the mediocrity it just makes you not want to rush back there. Give it a try for sure- your experience may vary. read more

He named off a few concoction specials, with house made purées and sour mixes and I went with the peach margarita. It. Was. Heaven. Best drink I've ever had. Now I just trust him to freestyle my drinks when I don't have something specific in mind. He also makes legit whiskey sours, chocolate martinis, etc. Seriously though, ask for Shane. The pizzas are made while you watch if you sit at the bar in a stone oven. They're awesome. We've also had the salads and wings. Just a heads up, if you get buffalo wings, expect a sweeter sauce. This is a rooftop restaurant and watering hole located in The Virginian. This is my second day in Lynchburg and my second visit to this wonderful rooftop place. I can't say enough about the ambiance here. A very well laid out floor plan with an equally good outdoor seating area. As I was dining solo I sat at the bar watching sports on the three TVs. The person behind the bar on both occasions was friendly and helpful. Nice small talk. The pizzas are sublime. That's what I had. My favorite "the carne". They also feature apps, sushi, salads and large plates including roasted chicken breast, grilled salmon, sesame tuna, pan seared sirloin steak among other things. So lots of reasons to return on my next visit. This place hops and in a very good way. Service is attentive, prompt and friendly. Very cool place. read more

Visited Skyline for dinner with business colleagues during a recent trip to the area. The rooftop space is the perfect size so it doesn't feel too crowded. Service was great, as was the food. Some of the best spinach artichoke dip I've had in a while! We also had the tune poke, burger, and a few other items. This is a new (and the only) rooftop restaurant/bar, inside of the Virginian Hotel in downtown Lynchburg. My food was tasty, it just took forever to get it. An appetizer -- corn and crab fritters with arugula, pickled onions, and an aioli. And dessert, a mixed berry trifle. The restaurant was busy. A lot of people come here just to eat; not staying at the hotel. So you might want a reservation. The berry trifle took over 20 minutes to come and so I took it with me [to my room] when it did. Letting it rest for a bit made it taste better because the shortbread wasn't crunchy anymore. The honey drizzle moistened it perfectly. I always enjoy my time at Skyline whenever I visit Lynchburg, VA. It is a rooftop bar and restaurant at the top of the newly renovated Virginian hotel in downtown Lynchburg. As the only rooftop spot in downtown Lynchburg it is popular so definitely get a reservation if you want to come at night. They currently have outdoor heaters and electric fireplaces throughout what normally is the outdoor section of the restaurant. It is also fully covered by a plastic canopy so you can still see the views. It definitely is more of an inside feel so if you are very COVID conscious I would be wary of that. They do still have an uncovered portion on the outdoor section with the large FirePit where you could enjoy a drink. Now on to the food. I would characterize Skyline as mainly seafood, but they do have a chicken and steak option. My favorite part however is the "Big Salads." I always love when restaurants have a salad option as a meal and there's are truly very filling, tasty, and unique. The salmon is also very good. The wine list is extensive and they also have numerous local beers on tap! Expect to spend about $25 on your food and around $6 for a beer and $10 for a glass of wine. read more

I generally really like Skyline, but I will warn they are variable. Tonight as an example I took my spouse for our 20th anniversary. The glass of wine was exactly as it should have been and the Brie appetizer exactly as I've had it before. The rest of the meal was nothing but strange dichotomies. My dinner - steak cooked perfectly, but completely unseasoned, fingerling potatoes almost raw and broccolini also severely undercooked, but well seasoned. My spouse's chicken was way over cooked and wooden and the risotto 1/2 great and 1/2 mushy, but the flavor was excellent. I've also had some of the best meals there in the area and I normally prefer Skyline to William and Henry - though another meal like this one and I will be reconsidering Skyline. For now they remain 4 stars, but I'll be much quicker to return food in future and may downgrade the rating if they remain inconsistent. read more

Huge fan of Skyline. Over the past two years I have visited Lynchburg frequently, and let me tell you this is by far the BEST restaurant I have had the pleasure to be a guest at. For date night I wanted something different, like usual I browsed through Yelp (knowing most of the restaurants in the area already) and found this gem. They had me at rooftop. I quickly suggested this restaurant to my SO but ultimately I wanted him to surprise me so I did not dig in too deep into their Yelp profile. Luckily he did choose Skyline! We went into the nice hotel (I believe it's called The Virginian) up to the rooftop restaurant. It was elegant in every way. Perfect for a romantic dinner, but also good for a casual happy hour outing. It was slow at the time of arrival, we decided to sit outside around one the fires. The view was phenomenal. All the mountains were breath taking. The service was comparable to service of an upscale restaurant. The staff treated us like they were serving us in the backyard of our own home. Blankets were offered since it was a bit chilly out (what?!). Our server was pleasant and suggestive. My partner got the crab cakes and I went with the flank steak, we got a charcutiere board as an appetizer. The food was delicious but not anything extremely special. The price was great, the service was amazing, and the view leaves you speechless. Nonetheless I definitely recommend this for a casual date night or for happy hour with the girls! read more

A trout with zero seasoning baked on some gnocchi cooked in chicken broth with undercooked broccoli. No side choices whatsoever. Overall lack of flavor and portion size leave a lot to be desired.
