I met a friend for coffee at Slate and really enjoyed the experience. I had a cappuccino, and my friend ordered a coffee and a pastry -- everything was fresh and nicely prepared. The space itself is beautiful and very comfortable, with a cool, welcoming vibe that makes it an easy place to relax and catch up. It feels like a great hangout spot for just about anyone. One thing to keep in mind: they prefer that guests not use laptops, as they don't want people settling in for hours without continuing to order. Also, be sure to check the hours. We almost got caught off guard when it was close to 5 pm and didn't realize they were about to close! Overall, it's a stylish and inviting spot -- just plan accordingly and enjoy the atmosphere. This cafe is pretty crowded and while I was lucky a table opened up, it was still very tightly packed. The staff was friendly and given how busy it was, they still took their time trying to get orders correct. I ordered the breakfast pizza which I liked but was a bit heavy on the pesto - even for someone that likes pesto I found myself scraping it off. I also ordered a latte which tasted the same as every other place. Im mostly giving this place a 3 because while it wasnt bad, nothing particularly stuck out to me for a reason to come back. I think I'd be more likely to order take out just to avoid the crowded seating. Then again, the menu felt pretty standard that I could order this anywhere in the city. read more

Great breakfast! I was rather limited with what I could order and choose the mushroom scramble. I really enjoyed it! It's a good portion size. I wish there was a breakfast sandwich option for those that don't eat meat or fish. You order at the counter and they'll give you a number to take to hot table of dining in. At 9:30 on a Saturday morning the cafe was at least half full. It took about 10 minutes or so to get my food. I also ordered a hot chocolate. Kind of tasted like Swiss Miss, which even though I make that a home I wanted something a little better. My friend ordered the quinoa bowl and that looked just as good if not better than mine! These people who work here are absolutely rude!!!! First off, one guy didn't even greet me. He just went "what do you want?" And when he didn't hear me when I told him my order he was super rude. And then we got our food and drinks, I put my laptop out, and another guy told me "no laptops are allowed." Which is fine I get that is a rule at cafes but he only really cared to be nice to tell us that. This isn't the first time I encountered rudeness here too. This is usually a great place for quick freshly made all day breakfast and bowls. I made a very bad choice, I ordered the breakfast pizza. It was the greasiest meal I ever had in my life. I could only eat half of it. It was so rich and unappealing. . The Parmesan cheese was so thick, that I had to peel It off the pizza, the pesto was excessive and looked like worms across the sparse fresh arugula. The crust was greasy. Slate Cafe is such a wonderful addition to the neighborhood. It's is on the first floor of the Ansonia, with a bright and positive atmosphere, with high ceilings and a gold and blue color scheme. You order at the counter and they bring your food to your table. There were also many people ordering drinks and food to go. I ordered: - Avocado Burrata (16+): burrata, sliced avocado, roasted cherry tomatoes, fresh basil and balsamic glaze on rosemary focaccia + mixed greens on the side - Hot Tea ($4): lemon ginger The Avocado Burrata was absolutely delicious. It had arugula instead of basil--not sure if this was accidental or intentional, but I actually liked the combination with arugula. Slate should seriously reconsider their "no laptops/tablets" rule, especially during the work week. I sat down for a beverage and sandwich, and while waiting for my food to be prepared was catching up on work emails (2pm on a Wed). Despite the cafe being pretty empty and having only been sat for about 2 min while waiting for my food, I was asked to put the tablet away. A shame because this used to be my favorite spot to stop by for a late lunch during the work week, but no longer. read more

Good coffee, good food, and friendly service in a bright, inviting space. Pretty much everything you could ask for in a neighborhood cafe! I knew they had recently opened on 74th, but when I visited, I was pleasantly surprised the large space and food menu. We have some great coffee shops on the UWS, but fewer that serve food beyond your standard baked goods and maybe a sandwich or two. Slate has a menu that covers the wall, ranging from breakfast scrambles and waffles to bowls and sandwiches. I don't usually get excited by the thought of salads and sandwiches, but the options here are a noticeable step up from the average cafe. My avocado burrata sandwich ($16) was served on perfectly baked focaccia, and they did NOT skimp on the good stuff (avocados, burrata, and roasted cherry tomatoes). I truly wasn't expecting much and instead found myself struggling to save half like I had originally planned. My cortado was also solid and well-priced for the area ($4). The espresso wasn't anything to write home about, but it got the job done. I'm definitely interested in visiting again to try out more of their coffee and food options. read more
