Slavko's has been around San Pedro for longer than a lifetime, and is now in its third generation of family ownership. It must be doing something right -- but at times it is hard to see just what that is. At least the service is fast and friendly. Slavko's claim to fame is that it does deep fried chicken nuggets in a secret batter. This is the signature dish. While the taste may remind the Croatian customers of some old-country flavor they crave, it leaves my palate flat. Instead, I go for the plain spit-roasted whole chicken, large and juicy and fresh, and a world ahead of what you can buy at the supermarket or even the other chicken places. Slavko has a full counter of side dishes. French Fries are cooked to your order in front of you, so you know they are really fresh. The best side dishes are of Croatian origen, and my favorite is the fried cabbage. Slavko's also offers Croatian beer, the only carry-out to do so here in this heavily Croatian town. Downside: only carry out, no place to sit inside, and an early closing hour. By the time I start thinking about dinner, Slavko's is closed. Too bad, as I might patronize them more often if they hung around until, say, 6 pm. read more

The chicken sandwich is huge and comes with a heap of fried potato nuggets. They use slices of broasted (fried then roasted?) chicken breast which is perfectly cooked and served along with the usual condiments inside a soft roll. They used to serve it up with bbq sauce but have since stopped so ask for it if you want it. Their brownies are gigantic and rich and so good. Add a couple of drinks and you've got a perfect picnic for two for around $10.00. All you need is a sunny spot with a view and you're good to go. read more

We were greeted by the owner who gave us yummy samples right away! My husband had the friend chicken with fried potatoes my kids had the chicken nuggets and I had the pulled pork sandwich and boy was it good! I've heard a lot of great things about this place, so decided to give it a try last night. Ordered fried chicken, potatoes, mac & cheese and some olives. The place was good. I'm not going to say it was the best chicken dinner I've ever had (that'd be Knotts) - but it was good. Certainly better than KFC. I gotta say, though - what really impressed me was that fact that the local health inspector was in line in front of me with her son picking up an order. Definitely a good sign. read more

Really great chicken. My family always loves when I get Slavko's to go. The guys there are really nice. I really appreciated when I arrived right before closing the other night. I assumed that if they had some chicken left, I'd take what they had to go. They took my order and cooked it to order (which as I learned that night is the only way they cook their chicken), even though they had to stay late to get it done. Sorry guys--I won't do it again. After coming home from work, my Mom would bring home delicious chicken from Slavko's Harbor Poultry when I was going up in San Pedro. Went down recently to purchase chicken for a holiday party and I see how Slavko's has changed. The restaurant interior is a now double the size of what it was before. Since they always make their chicken fresh, the owner told me it would be a few minutes to cook which I didn't mind waiting. During the wait, he offered me a free sample of their Jambalaya that was hot and spicy which I loved! I'm going to order it on my next visit. The staff is always friendly, as we talked about sports, namely USC football. Before I knew it , my chicken was ready. The aroma of the chicken and the potato nuggets made my mouth water. This is truly a great family run restaurant. I remember stopping by here after visiting the Long Beach Aquarium and stopping by to pickup some chicken nuggets for an early dinner. I took my 1 year old daughter with me and they welcomed us both with open arms. They even gave my daughter a free Slavko's t-shirt to take with us. This is my second time here.. First time I had the chicken nuggets.. Which were great.. Second time I brought my son to try the ribs , thought maybe he would like them here... He didn't.. As I started eating some Slavkos chicken, I had to put my food down and write a review. This place is the absolute BOMB! I alway order chicken with potato nuggets and macaroni salad and letme tell you, it's heaven on a plate. I've been eating here since I was a kid. Slavkos is an institution in San Pedro. Your not going to find any value meals here for the fact that its a small family owned business and have to cover overhead. Amazing food, and the friendliest family you could ever want in a food establishment. We went there for the broasted chicken and it was out of this world, along with the potato nuggets. Brian, the son, also gave us a sample of the ribs and they were so YUMMY! The inside interior is old, but something about it makes you instantly aware that this place has survived all and deserves recognition for the SUPER FRIENDLY, family service they provide. My mother had Slavko prepare many Thanksgiving turkeys for her over the years. Considering she cooked for a large gang she had at least two turkeys on hand. The memories of the wonderful, tasty and moist turkey remained with me and while here for a family reunion, I ordered my own turkey for the party. Jim and family are carrying on the tradition of excellence. The turkey was tasty, moist with gravy on the side to serve. It was roasted and sliced to perfection and all I had to do was pick it up. I have been going to Slavko's for 10 years. My kids always love to go there for a sandwich or chicken . They especially love the Potato Nuggets. They also have many homemade side dishes you don't see in most deli's I ordered my Thanksgiving Turkey from them. They cook it and even carve it for you. It was delicious! This place has been a part of SP history. This place is for locals and those who can appreciate a small business run in town for 90 years. That in itself is all the review one should need.. For those who posted they did not care for it you have a right to your opinion. Maybe they should go back to PV, RH, BH or wherever they are from. If they don't like it move on. Don't desecrate a tradition. If you want to say the chicken is bland for your taste then put some salt or pepper on it . Some of us like to actually taste the food and for some it would be too spicy or salty if they doctored it up too much. This place makes it hand made on the site for you from quality chickens. If you can't appreciate a locally run Mom and Pop, that is as good a place as this, I know I could never "Hang" with you. I even bought a Slavko's T-Shirt I like the place so much. Found out about this place a while ago, but never made it in until the other day. Boy was I missing out!!! This place is great! Family owned since the beginning of time, and a small, simple, and well refined menu. The rotisserie chicken is sooooo good! Juicy, flavorful, and damn right tasty! I've been eating Slavko's since before I could even walk and am always ready when someone suggest it for lunch or dinner. The chicken is fried in a pressure cooker and comes out so crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The batter on the chicken is not especially seasoned like a the fried chicken chains, but the natural taste of the fried meat and skin is great. The menu also consists of chicken nuggets, pastas, potato and macaroni salads as well as the potato nuggets. The potato nuggets are the best ever! If you like potato wedges (crispy on the outside, soft on the outside) you will LOVE these. Just try making it home without eating half the container. They also supply game meat and you can place orders for fried turkey's for the holidays. You can also find Croatian and Italian wine/beer that cannot be found other places. The family that owns this place is great and is always interested in making their customers happy. The only negative is that because it is a family owned business they close on their annual vacation and anytime there is a big family event (wedding). The first time I walked in I was overwhelmed and didn't know what to try first. George ( the best counter guy in Pedro by the way) walked me through the menu and was very patient with me.
