Slavko's. Memories of my childhood come flooding back whenever I hear the word. Growing up in Pedro, I remember stopping by Slavko's with my dad practically every weekend morning to pick up a bucketful of chicken & potato nuggets to munch on while cruising with the family on my pop's sailboat. There's nothing like being out on the water and enjoying the greasy goodness of chicken & potatoes. This place is excellent at facilitating memories and they have always been fond ones for me. The establishment is a family affair, customer service is top notch, and you can always count on Slavko's at the last minute... perfect accompaniments to potlucks or picnics. Whenever that sack of chicken & potatoes is offered up, I've yet to hear a person say they didn't like it. And even though I wouldn't call myself a broasted or fried chicken specialist, no other chicken has come close to the deliciousness that I've found here. I view it as more of a take-out place, though there are a few tables available. I was glad to hear on my most recent visit that they're expanding, so I'll be looking forward to seeing the ideas they've got brewing for the new addition. Although I hope they don't change too much. They've got a special something going on here, that just plain works, which is clear to see since they've stuck around as long as they have. read more

I had the much anticipated and hyped Slavko's famous broasted chicken and potato nuggets for dinner last night. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They also seemed to take a goodly amount of pride in their offerings and were generous in providing samples (didn't even have to ask). I tried their Jambalaya and it was just okay. I also tried their potato nugget and it reminded me of Shakey's mojo potatoes, except the nuggets are shaped like cubes. I placed my order and watched as they got to work. It looks like they cook their chicken and potatoes in what looks like a pressurized deep fryer. I patiently waited as they cooked up my order then took the freshly cooked chicken & potatoes to the fam for our dinner feast. The chicken was crisp on the outside and moist on the inside. However, it was remarkably plain tasting and lacked seasoning. Suffice to say we were rather underwhelmed with our chicken, especially after reading all the rave reviews and hearing about this famous chicken around Pedro. Definitely not a do over. read more

After 4 years of living in San Pedro, I'm so glad to have finally tried out Slavko's. Each time my wife and I discussed the possibility, the establishment would be closed that day or the place was being renovated. It seemed like fate was holding us back. Well wait no more, I can now proudly say that I've tried their delicious broasted chicken and potato nuggets. The restaurant isn't in the most tidiest of areas in San Pedro along Pacific Ave. We parked along the street (front entrance), but I believe there is parking available in the back. The establishment itself is quite clean and well furnished. I was impressed how updated and chic the dining area is with comfortable seating and plasmas for your viewing pleasure. The first time, we played it safe and ordered a 6 piece meal with potato nuggets for around $10. The chicken was extremely juicy (even the breast meat). The nuggets were perfect, not overcooked or burnt. Compared to KFC, the chicken at Slavko's is definitely not as greasy. In the future, I'm looking forward to trying some other well-known favorites such as the jambalaya, ribs, and sandwiches. Even though I can't rave enough about the great quality of the food, the service can use more seasoning. The following week I ordered a tray of chicken for my church (60 pieces for $51.50). Don't expect to receive 60 "real" pieces because the establishment will chop up a breast or thigh piece into 2-3 and count them separately. When deciding upon which sides to order and in which size, James was a bit condescending in his tone and seemed impatient as I was contemplating my choices. His demeanor is a bit aloof and abrasive. I wasn't too happy about the way he acted. I asked about dipping sauces, and before I could even finish my question, he flatly stated a dollar something. I was taken aback by his approach. I asked for ketchup and he placed like 8 packets in a little brown bag. Man, I didn't know customers who ordered $80+ worth of food were so disdained. read more

Slavko's is a straight take-out counter. It's a family place, and it's the only place to go for fried chicken in San Pedro. I try to eat here as often as my arteries can take it. This place is about two things: chicken and potatoes. The fried chicken is solid, moist and not to greasy. The chicken nuggets are tasty and not mysterious - they're all white meat. They serve massive hot wings, in a butter based sauce - taste heaven. My favourite thing is their gizzards, which are to die for, especially right after they come out of the fryer. The potatoes are broasted - big chunks of seasoned potatoes, sold by the quart. They'll give you so many potatoes that they'll overflow their bag or box, and you'll be re-frying them for days with breakfast if you've got leftovers. They serve a quite tasty Jambalaya, out of their deli counter, as well. You can also get sandwiches, but I've never made it past the chicken to order one. Slavko's has amazing customer service. They know all of their regulars by name, and they give generous samples and tastes to you while you wait for them to gather your order. read more

Love this spot. My boyfriend showed it to me years ago and its been one of our fav places to have chicken. Their fried chicken is incredibly moist and delicious and their sides are to die for! They give you samples of their potato wedges when you walk in and it just makes you want to buy a pint of it all for yourself, and I do every time! I've also had their macaroni and potato salad which have been great as well. Definitely one of the best chicken places I've been to..hit me if you know of any better ones! TRY THE WINGS. I walked in with some friends and family and received the warmest welcome i have ever experienced in a deli/restaurant. they offered me samples of the chicken nuggets, potatoes and some sausage.. all were delicious! we settled on some fried chicken, ribs and nuggets to share. everything tasted amazing! not to mention the beer was dirt cheap. My first negative Yelp review, I should mention up front. This review is for people who, like me, don't live in Pedro. Went once before, a few months ago. Slow service, but the sandwich was good. Went back. Ordered a sandwich again. Sat down and waited. Waited for some time. People kept coming in, getting to-go orders, leaving. Were they all calling ahead? I don't know. Started to pay close attention to the staff of three. Didn't really see anyone bustling or swamped. Another table came in and sat near me. They'd ordered dine-in food, too. They waited. I probably waited too long before approaching the guy who took my order. "I have to ask why my sandwich is taking so long," I said, or something like that. He pointed to what looked like a deep fryer -- "One of our machines isn't working." Did I ask how that machine affected the sandwich? I don't remember. I asked about the rest of the staff. The guy referred to another guy in the kitchen. "He's busy," the guy said. Was he the guy who made the sandwiches, but he was too busy doing something other than making sandwiches? Why did this guy tell me the other guy was busy? But this guy was a wall of disaffect -- whether I got a sandwich didn't concern him. As I left -- full disclosure: I drank half a soda cup of soda and didn't pay for it on the way out -- quick reminder: once you've made it clear that you're not going to remain a customer, and the bathroom requires asking an employee for the key, you're kind of screwed -- the table next to me got their food. They were kids, and I got the impression they were local kids who'd been there a lot, and then I realized: This place is a local favorite, and only locals know how to make it work for them. I've been eating at this place since I was old enough to chew! The smell inside is amazing - the aroma of chicken, fried potatoes, and macaroni salad. This place definitely reminds me of all the great things about my childhood. I had Slavkos at picnics, birthday parties, and "date-night" with Dad. The potatoes are to die for and I would also recommend trying the fried chicken, which will kick KFC's ass any day of the week. This place is family-owned, and has been since it opened. I love being welcomed by the same faces year after year. My Dad and I have been on a first name basis with the owners since I can remember. You can taste-test the potatoes, and sometimes they will even put out a small tray while you wait. This place will keep me coming back to San Pedro, even now that I don't live there anymore. If you've never tried Slavko's chicken nuggets you've never tried a chicken nugget!!! All others pale in comparison!!! $7.50 gets you a chicken and potato nugget(also the bomb!) meal. Worth every penny! They have tasty dipping sauces(BBQ,sweet&sour,honey mustard,ranch) as well. You can order fresh turkeys,chicken,duck,lamb,ribs and other tasty meaty treats(advance notice). Scrumptious sides available too(macaroni salad, jumbalaya,etc.). They sell beer,wine,sodas and other beverages too. Staff is super friendly and lots of times give you samples to taste. Plus they just put out a couple folding tables and chairs in case you can't wait to dig in. Believe you me it's hard not to devour your food before getting home with!!! Ok so I've lived here in Pedro for 2 years. Never came here because I thought it was shady, in the hood and a place that I would feel creeps and icky. But I went after a friend showed up at my house with Slavko's chicken nuggets. I went there tonight for hubby and I and got wings, coleslaw, potatoe salad (to die for!!!!), and the nuggets. Mmhmmmmmmmmmmm! That was bomb diggidy! I couldn't stop grubbing the flavors are simple but explosive and traditional. Inside its clean, nice, and great for a Nice dine in and a ice cold beer. So now I'm a believer. It never ceases to amaze me how we can have preconceived notions about a place or even a person for that matter. Then we are completely blown away by what we discover!!!!. This is a gem dining place, oh and the owners stuffed me with samples! I was like wow... All that said I sampled the gumbo. I have had waaaay better. Good effort though, but not the greatest. It is worth a 4 stars. I give the extra one for being owned by the nicest guy ever. When you don't know what to get, you can taste everything. You are almost not hungry after that. The owner is so happy so feed you that his all face is smiling! When you get out you actually feel happy like if he gave you some of his happiness! This is my comfort food here in San Pedro. When I'm hungry and can't decide what to eat- this will always make me smile. The nuggets/nuggets is always a winner in my book. These nuggets beat anyone out in the nugget game. The bad parts keeping it from 5 stars is the lack of eat in area. This is basically a take out joint. I live down the street from this place and its great. I've been coming here for about 15 plus years and it tastes like home. Now that they've added the seating area it's a more cozy spot. The go-to order is Chicken Nuggets, Potato nuggets, and a bag of the bread they sell. Combine it all with some BBQ and it makes an awesome sandwich. The staff are super nice and always are giving us something extra. If you are from San Pedro and haven't tried this, I don't know if you're really from Pedro. read more

I have to update my review of the place since I wrote my previous entry years ago. They have really put a lot of updates and additions to the place that make it a great place to sit down and enjoys a meal. Now as I said before, stick with what their known for, the chicken and the potatoes. That's their bread and butter. If you veer too far from that, I refuse to be responsible for your culinary experience. Now they do have spicy pickled eggs, mostaccioli, saur kraut, jellow salad, baked beans, etc in their deli case, but the few I tried didn't exciter at all. They also have cevapcici's and ribs in their case, and their okay, but only a distraction from the real good. Get the half pint, or full pint of the chicken nuggets and an equal loving portion of the monstrously delicious potatoes and take them down to royal palms and just chill and take in natures beauty with some of mankind's greatest foods in nugget form. Great customer service... I just happened to find this place for a quick lunch and the service and the food couldn't get no better. I saw that they fried chicken prepared I asked for 2/3 pieces my server added, I supposed what they're popular for, potato nuggets..and a rib and small sample of chicken nuggets!!! I ain't even mad.. This place is the picture perfect place of a mom and pop place. Mostly just the locals of san pedro know of it. Good food and super friendly place. Ive been there dozens of times, but took my guy there recently. Gave me a reminder of how nice local people and small business owners can be. Small small place to eat inside with old school furniture like your grandma used to have. My first time eating here. We had the four peice chicken dinner, jalapeño poppers, mostaccoli and a chocolate chip cookie. The chick was moist and tasted good. I liked the poppers as well. My gf said the cookie was awesome. I almost gave 4 stars but the inside was depressing. Almost empty meat case. Ahhhhh . . . the nostalgic memories I had as I entered this place. It reminded me of a place in my home town where you can get broasted chicken and potatoes. I soon discovered one of my friends was having the same nastalgic memories as we sat waiting for our order. We both hoped the food here was just as tasty as our memories were of our home town place. The staff (I'm assuming they were all family members since it's family owned) were super nice and courteous. Our orders took a little longer than expected, and they kept apologizing for the length of time. They also brought us some potatoes on the house to eat while we were waiting. We ordered the potato nuggets, chicken nuggets, and jalapeno poppers. All were really good without being overly greasy. The dipping sauces were really good too. I believe the barbecue one was completely gone by the time we were finished eating everything. There were lots of different sides in the deli case too. They had some spicy marinated hard boiled eggs that I really wanted to try, but didn't have the nerve to try since I'd been having some stomach problems and didn't want to irritate my stomach further with the spiceness. I will definitely stop by to try them out the next time I'm in San Pedro. Much to my surprise, I learned that my hubby had never had broasted chicken and potatoes before. He was a convert for this approach to cooking.
