Great sandwich shop on Gaffey in San Pedro CA. Owner is from Chicago and his menu reflects Chicago's favorite sandwiches and dishes. I had to try the Chicago style Italian beef because no one makes it like Chicago. We shared the 10" large sandwich but should have bought the 8" medium. Delicious. Tender beef, giardineria in the middle and a big dill pickle on the side. They offer soft drinks, tea and beer or wine. Two dining rooms, one in the bar. Order when you walk in and find a table. I love this place and have been coming here for years. Consistent quality food. They have what you're looking for. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner is covered with this place. Yep! Not only do they have all the sandwiches that you could be craving, but they have an extensive breakfast menu served all day (breakfast burrito is my go to at all hours of the day), multiple salads (Cobb salad is bomb), tacos, dogs, and burgers all served in different ways to satisfy that craving you've had for days. There is this one incident that really hits home with me several years back. On my way to work, I work nights, I ordered via Yelp as always, and as I'm pulling up the shop, I realize I don't have my wallet. @#%$!! I'm friggen hungry, I look at my watch, I don't have time to go back home and get my wallet and still make it to work on time. I decide to walk in and tell them that I'm sorry to have ordered what I did and not have the means to pay for it. I'm thinking, what a waste of food! So, I walk in and I tell the owner what happened and that I apologize. Before I can walk out he says, "Hey, that's ok. I recognize you and things happen. Go ahead and take it and get me next time." To me, the best of the bunch is Pirozzi's. This sandwich was expensive. I think $19.95 for a large. At the old pricing, I would never go back to Jersey Mike's because the Saloon is better but being so expensive, it's a consideration now. There are over twenty different sandwiches to choose from and you can make most of them into combos with soup or salad. The combos are almost the same size as regular salad orders (huge). The same suspects are available that you would see at any sandwich shop. But, here they have Cuban, Italian, and Southwest style sandwiches. The beef dips are amazing, I had the Cuban dip. Wound up back at the incredible Sandwich Saloon last week. John suggested trying their new, elevated, Beef Brisket sandwich. If John says try, I try. It was over the top. The BBQ sauce has changed, in fact I found out they've added some beer for additional flavor. They're spreading a spicy bacon jam on the bread and it matches perfectly with the meat. The bad: I added Costco's everything mustard sauce to my second half because I felt like the sandwich was slightly bland or too dry from the bread (it had a dusty bread coating). It was layered over a mountain of white rice, and the teriyaki sauce was surprisingly flavorful with a nice tang to it. The veggies were broccoli, carrots, and cauliflower, a bit more cooked than I'd prefer, leaning toward the soft side, but they still brought some texture and flavor to the mix. Now the fish taco? That was a standout. It came loaded with two golden-fried fish fillets, tucked into corn tortillas, stacked with slaw, thick slices of avocado, and their secret sauce drizzled on top. That sauce was tangy and creamy, with a kick that brought everything together. Each bite had crunch, creaminess, and bold flavor. It totally caught me off guard, in the best way. Honestly, it was better than most fish tacos I've had at places that only do fish tacos. Definitely more impressive than the teriyaki bowl... or should I say, teriyaki plate. As my palate and income grew, I started to see the Saloon for what it truly is: a reliable, local spot serving good sandwiches--but nothing that'll blow you away. There's something comforting about this place. It's not about fancy ingredients or cutting-edge recipes--it's a place where you can get a solid, satisfying sandwich. And sometimes, that's exactly what you need. No need for a standing ovation, but it's exactly what you can rely on when you want something familiar and satisfying. When I was in high school I thought that I was a forward thinking gormandizer by getting a Caesar salad with Chinese dressing or maybe it was the other way around. I just knew that I was being clever by mixing and matching, But in reality, I was being silly with confidence. But all youth do the same in one way or another- pretend to be a head of their time with odd choices. However, I see that as the privilege of youth--- having the space of choice to find oneself. Or in this case, finding the freedom of choice to find your taste in food. Right now, I am in a kick that revolves around their chicken salad sandwich. It is a creamy chicken melange. It typically comes with salad, tomatoes, peppers, pepporicini, and pickles. I take the sandwich but remove all ingredients that start with a p: but leave the cheese which is provolone. I know the flaw in my ordering, but, it helps me remember what I need to remove when I call. This place is unique because it has the basics--- like chops and soda but it also offers these choices and beyond. For example, when I go I often get Rrusty Island's Chips--- which are a unique treat that I do not see around a lot. The chips, to my palete, are extra crispy that other regular chips. This is just an example of how the Sandwich Saloon differentiates itself from other standard sandwich places. But what really makes this place stand out is there dessert offerings: mini key lime pies, brownies, and the top dessert choice: Chocolate Chip cookies, with nuts, that seriously taste like a dream come true. Sometimes I go and just get them cause their that good. Other times, I get a few to share with co-workers I like. If you have not tasted them, and you have a sweet tooth, I would do myself a favor and get them. The place has grown in its menu so it has a variety of things for many people. Like over the years besides salads, I have gotten chili, pickles, meatball sandwiches, and all of these different things. Apparently, now they have breakfast too.
