And then there are reasonably priced accommodations making up the vast majority of hotels like this particular Sleep Inn. These are the establishments we use during our domestic road trips. And this is a remarkable option conveniently located just off I-81, where a small degree of luxury can be experienced without braking the bank. The hotel has been beautifully remodeled, with squeaky clean rooms and a sparkling lobby. It was a wonderful surprise! Stayed at Sleep Inn for a long weekend so we could enjoy the Blue Ridge Mountains. Great location for the places we wanted to visit. Pet friendly(with a few) which was great for us. Room was newly renovated and very clean. They did a room refresh part way through our stay and you can tell their cleaners take a lot of pride in cleaning. read more

PART ll Today I ended a 2 night stay,  during which I am attempting to take care of some things my recently deceased sister left behind.  During my stay I interacted with at least three different people at the front desk.  During none of those interactions was I informed of their scheduled parking lot maintenance which would obviously be a slight inconvenience,  due to my expectation of parking at the side entrance.  Late last night, the side parking lot was taped off when I returned. No big deal.  I parked fairly close still, and avoided walking on the pavement in case it would cause a problem with the  new sealant. This morning,  as always when I am planning my 11:00 departure,  first I took my dog outside (walking on gravel and curbs, detouring through the bushes).  Then got my coffee up front,  caught up with work in my room, then showered.  I had enough time to dry my hair, etc, put pet and belongings in car and be out by 11:00.  (It would be easier for me,  but I don't request the late check out offered to platinum members, knowing it complicates the cleaners' schedule).  At 10:40 there is a very loud and forceful knock on my door. I knew it couldn't be house-keeping, because they are very polite if they need to knock.  At the door was a woman holding a clipboard and a scowl.  What had I done wrong? Well, apparently I should have known not to park in the front lot.  While trying to get straight what she was demanding of me,  standing at the door with hair half-dried, body half- dressed, and a confused expression,  she said that no,  they could not wait for 20 minutes when I was due to check out. I didn't give her an apology or whatever she was expecting,  but closed the door *kind of hard*. Without saying anything.   When I came out again,  she was still banging on the door across the hall.  I took that opportunity to ask her why I couldn't have been warned of this during the previous 2 days.  Her immediate and first response was to threaten to call the police. WHAT???   ...I was upset, yes, but hadn't even gotten LOUD yet.  (Check your cameras Sleep Inn Staunton... do you have audio?) So then I go outside and see that the only parking was on the far side of the building.  Opposite end from my room.  Rather than make  4 more trips from one end to the other,  I retrieved my dog and what I could carry to go out the side door and wander through the bushes,  still trying not to mess up their sealant.  I parked across the lot, left my car and ac running with my dog inside (he has a heart problem and can't tolerate heat). Me:  hair wet, no make up, morning ruined, inexplicably already threatened with police action, on the verge of tears after an already emotional weekend.  At the door is the "owner" and someone who obviously had time to do her hair and make-up and iron her her power suit this morning.   I had already asked her on the way back from my first trip if it wouldn't have been better planning if I had been notified at some point prior to the zero minute warning I received.  Her response,  "well, we told the girl at the desk to tell everyone checking in and she said she did."  I have since come to realize, after dwelling on this for much longer than it calls for, that she and the rest of the staff involved this morning were being very aggressive because they assumed I already knew about the parking and was just being spiteful (or something?).  Again, WHAT???  That is when I became a bit LOUDER.  My (reasonable, but possible loud) response: "Well, that obviously wasn't sufficient, and it is somewhat lame to blame the desk clerk for your poor planning" Power Suit:  "I'm done with this conversation."   On my 3rd and final trip to my room, there are owner and Power Suit at the front door, watching me with that empowering kind of shared disdain. You know what I mean. Me to owner: you couldn't have waited 20 minutes? Owner: blank, panicked look, and side-eye to powersuit. Powersuit: (I'm paraphrasing, but not by much) "you're the one who is disrespecting the owner.  (Said with Big, shocked eyes) ..THE OWNER!  Don't you think you DESERVE to be treated like dirt?  You are not even worth my TIME, and how dare you not show the obvious respect due to THE OWNER! I am done with you. Be gone. Then yes, (your imagination is accurate) a flick of the wrist and a toss of the head, while looking at the more important goings-on of her cell phone. admit that I did at some point during my departure, give the OWNER, very respectfully and discreetly, my middle finger.  So, in view of that overarching act of damning retribution and utter blaspemy, I obviously deserved all that happened this morning and, really, I see it clearly now.  They should have called the police BEFORE banging on my door.  But alas, that too would have required some planning. And Wow, I really should have just requested a late check out.  Or hey, maybe they should have offered it?....  what do I know?  I'm only the GUEST. read more

Checked in late night after a long day on the road girl at the front desk was unpleasant. Maybe removing her nose ring would adjust her attitude. The rooms at this sleep inn are not as nice as others i have had the pleasure to visit. The sink is right next to the bed. An average size person would be very cramped in the shower or toilet. The toilet door was facing the bed, no privacy. The only good thing was the clean bed. Would not want to stay there again. read more

Well this is my first time staying here and will probably be my last. Very slow elevator. As soon as I stepped out of the elevator it smelled of cat piss. My bathroom floor is super sticky and the shower floor is filthy. I had to wear my flops to take a shower. The air conditioner is super clogged with a mold smell.... Never Again!!!!!! read more

My judgement for a hotel room always comes squarely down to the shower. The showers here are truly beautiful, roomy, adjustable shower head, great water pressure and the head is built for people over 6 feet tall. Room is clean and on a Saturday stop the price wasn't outrageous at all. The hotel is quiet and made for a restful sleep. My only real complaint is the pillows. The bed had two style of pillow one that was a normal size pillow and another that was couch sized. I didn't like the couch sized option. It was comfy as a pillow but it was very small. read more

Where do we start? Never have we had a bad taste in the mouth from sleep inn Staunton that our entire family has stayed in for MANY years. 2 weddings we had the entire floor both times. Family reunion. A couple of funerals in the area. Our family from NC, Florida, MA and NY we all have favored your hotel. We do have family in the Charlottesville area but drive the 40 miles to your hotel to stay. We are all choice members too. Several complaints in the last 2 months from 3 of us separate family members one being myself and husband. We recently witnessed the supervisor screaming at employees in front of guests while trying to enjoy breakfast. The lady that worked with joan. She used to be nice but what we seen was almost wicked. There's a way to handle things and anyone knows good management doesn't do it in front of guests. The hotel looks nice but who's pets are running all over the place up the stairs on the 4th floor where we were just wild unattended by adults and not on chains. We will not be back. Ms Joan ran a very nice environment. This was not. It looks better but the only thing that I can give credit to this new change is that the nite time and early morning young man is very nice as he checked us the past couple of times or checked us out , very nice young man and very professional. Our coffee was cold on a couple occasions and tasted terrible. The breakfast lady was on her phone while we we waited to ask her to switch out the milk that looked curdled. It's really gone down hill. I don't know the middle eastern man's name that checked us in but maybe he should run the hotel and show staff how to operate. Who is the go to person anyway? We will send these COMPLAINTS to Choice and the person in charge that someone is running the property in the mud. Friendly helpful staff, Pleasant, clean rooms make this a decent place to stay. The building is older, but in good repair. The front doors are not automatic. The bathroom nook (yes,I said, "nook" is just that-a nook) was small but nice with a sliding wood door separating the toilet and large shower stall from the sink. The desk area is a decent size and the room had a fridge. The beds were good although the linen was dated, but clean. The curtains were good blackout type with no leaks of light. The breakfast was basic with sausage biscuits, boiled eggs, only 1 waffle maker, cereals, pastries, fresh fruit, instant oatmeal and grits with orange or apple juice, coffee and different types of tea. They also had flavored creamers for coffee. The breakfast room is tiny and sitting room is at a premium. The breakfast lady was very pleasant and refilled everything quickly. It was easy to find and just off the exit. Convenient to many local attractions. A good place to stay. read more

The hotel is in a good location, convenient to travelers and the staff couldn't be nicer, but.... Once we arrived and checked in, we went to our room. When we got into the room we had to turn on the AC unit and as the room started to cool, it was filled with a musty scent. Next to the air conditioner and behind the bed was a handful of starburst wrappers, making us wonder if the room was ever cleaned before our stay. The sliding door to our bathroom stuck and we had to lift and pull it to open and close it. The continental breakfast consisted of cereal, yogurt, microwaveable eggs and the waffle maker. The ice machine was also broken and out of service. Overall the area seemed safe and had a nice staff, I just wouldn't stay there again. read more

It was nice and clean Front end desk so sweet and helpful before you even ask. I did not like the breakfast Everything is cooked in the microwave, the waffle maker was not working right, and all you heard was the lady that worked there say" I don't why". She stayed right into of me as I tried to make my choice. I left because I felt very uncomfortable, and returned with my daughter who just was not sure what she wanted because the waffle machine was not working. And there she was following us, as I was trying to ask my child what she wanted, my daughter has special needs, is not easy. Place to eat is so small for the amount of people that were in there. I usually stop in Staunton when traveling from New England to Tennessee and this was my first time at this hotel. You can't beat the location, right off the interstate and close to Waynesboro and downtown Staunton. The front desk staff were friendly and polite. The room was comfortable but the bathroom was a little cramped. The shower door, when it swung open, nearly hits the toilet, so there's not that much space to maneuver. Every other Sleep Inn I've stayed at before offered an expansive breakfast. When I booked this Staunton Sleep Inn I was assured there would be a "full hot breakfast" but what I found was that "hot" means heating up a breakfast sandwich or Hot Pocket in the microwave. I thought there might be hot bacon or sausage or scrambled eggs. That being said, their breakfast area isn't the largest so there is not room to sent up all that. Also unique to this particular Sleep Inn was Jacque, the breakfast attendant. She not only offered to heat up your food for you but cleared your plate and directed seating when the breakfast area got full. Overall it was a good stay and I would probably stop here again if I needed a hotel in Staunton. read more

Had stayed at a Sleep Inn in another state the night before and was very pleased as my husband sleeps in a chair and needs a shower not a tub. Looked at photos on Yelp for the Staunton one, saw a photo of a room with an comfy chair. Call the number listed in Yelp ( same local # on the receipt) and explained we needed a room with a chair with arms and cushions & was assured by man they would reserve that for us and he explained it would also have an accessible bath. Upon arrival found room with no chair. Woman at desk said they had " no men answering the phone but yet she had our name etc. I asked her if she had ever slept in a desk chair but she said they had no rooms with soft chair. Went to have husband talk to her and then after saying could not move chair from the small lobby she finally agreed to call a manager who 30 minutes later finally helped her locate a room in the hotel with a perfect chair and a small but doable shower. Lessons learned. #1 make sure your reservation call is really to actual hotel not just a reservation agent far away answering if hotel is busy. #2 stand up for yourself and be a little pushy to get what you were promised. read more

My wife and I stayed in room 120 on the night of 1/06/17. We checked in, got to the room, showered, turned the heat on and tried to sleep. The heater was making a REALLY loud noise. It was impossible for my wife and I to sleep. I went to the front desk to let them know there was an issue, and for a room change. The clerk said that he could not change the room. I said well, we can not sleep with this racket, and we need the heat. Can we get a refund and I will find another hotel. This was refused. He said there were no refunds. In the morning, when I went to the desk to check out at 8 am, I explained this same thing to the girl at the desk. She just said oh, im sorry, and had no care in the world. I said I would dispute the charge on my Credit card. If you want to stay at a crappy hotel, with zero customer service, stop here. read more

The pictures don't do this place justice! Traveling alone with my dog late at night. Stopped here at midnight. Well lite parking and outdoor dog area. Room was exceptionally clean! Steve at the front desk was very helpful with my bag since I had a young dog! Dog treats were handed out! Safe clean place with great staff! Dog friendly and a great price! Nice, clean rooms and a pretty good breakfast. Bathroom is small but I honestly don't mind it at all. Staff for the most part are friendly but one is very gossipy and rudely talked about me to other guests on a simple matter that would have been resolved if she had just asked me a simple question. Rooms were clean but had a mildew smell to them. Beds are full size not queen. Called front desk to make sure electric car charger was working before we actually booked and was told it is. Explained that it's important because if not we need to go elsewhere. He said it was, got here it does not work he the front desk guy said it's because you don't know how to use it. Cons: the walls are really thin - the dude in the room next to us talked loudly on his phone and watched tv all night so it was as if he was rooming with us and the pillows were too small to put over my head to drown out the noise or suffocate myself at 7am. there was hair and fuzz in our bed and, most notably, the room smelled like butts - like human butts, not the cigarette kind - even though it looked clean otherwise. read more

Stayed at this hotel with my friends. The room was clean and bright, and the beds were soft and comfortable. Free WiFi is provided along with a micro wave and refrigerator. Front desk personnel was polite and friendly. A few issues, the bed was soft and by 4 am a little too soft. The TV channels were the bare minimum and they were painting the lobby, so there was a paint smell as you entered. Receptionist was not friendly but I let it go because who likes to work graveyard hours. Room smelt humid, funky. Bed sheets look not new. It looked like someone has slept on it. It was messy. There was only one plastic cup. Bathroom was clean, supplies -soap,lotion, shampoo- were there. Fridge and microwave were provided. Breakfast: free and decent. Omelette and boiled eggs were in the fridge. Need to use microwave. Eggs tasted like eggs so it was good. They provided individual cereal boxes which was nice. so cereal not stale. milk was provided as well. They provided apples, bananas and canned fruit. Coffee was decent. It's a pretty basic hotel. Our room was spacious enough. But it had a strange smell. The restaurant area is very small and it was completly crowded. The breakfast has lots of good options like fruits (apples, grapes, bananas) and many types of corn flakes (Kellogg's special K with strawberries). We were in town for my daughter to go to the Hoby leadership conference at JMU. Upon check-in, we were greeted by a very friendly front desk person. She let us check in a little earlier than the 4pm check-in time. The room was very clean and quiet. The mattress was firm yet comfortable. The free breakfast was good and plentiful (although the eggs were cold). Coffee was great and is available all day. We would definitely stay here again! Staff was friendly, rooms small, breakfast not bad. My first issue was with the AC...it didn't turn on! The temp during the day was near 80, so the room felt muggy. Second issue was when my husband turned the iron on, stink bugs came crawling out of it! When I told the front desk staff I was told that stink bugs are harmless and the air should work...talk to the manager in the morning. Stayed here for James Madison University graduation weekend. We were kind of hesitant after reading other reviews, but were happily satisfied with the accommodations. The rooms were recently redecorated,fresh wallcoverings,carpet,and furniture . The staff was friendly and did not hesitate to show us our room prior to checking in. There was no evidence of any noxious smells. The bathroom is small but workable. Overall we would recommend this hotel for a quick trip and would stay here again. read more

Just passing through on our way to Georgia. We spent all of 6 hours here and we're very satisfied. The rooms were very clean, the beds were comfortable, the shower was great-nice and hot, great water pressure. The continental breakfast was perfect for us; waffles, cereal, yogurt, fruit, muffins, breakfast sandwiches. Saved us time allowing us to get back on the road faster. We had no problem making reservations from the road, the night shift was friendly when we arrived and when we left. No complaints. read more

Reception desk was very nice and friendly. Smoke free hotel which is nice. I does not have automatic opening doors. which sucked when i was bring in my luggage. The room was a little bit smaller than expected. But nothing to fuss about. Flat panel TV which I was happy to see. Fridge was big enough to fit a gallon of milk. Microwave and plenty of amenities. The room had a stand up shower, first time I saw that. I did get a military discount. Free breakfast. But the dining area was way too small and crowded. I couldn't sit my family. So I just grabbed things to go. They had decent coffee and to go cups, individual cereals and milks. Bagels, toaster ovens, cream cheese, jelly, various fruits. I had a pleasant stay for the night. This is a four story hotel.... with only 5 tables in the breakfast area. Did not get to eat our included breakfast because there was nowhere to sit. Why bother..... how do they think they can feed the entire 4 floors with only 5 tables. This was the most expensive hotel we stayed in our entire 2 wk trip. The room was so small I don't know how housekeeping could make the beds. There were 2 double beds and every time I rolled over in bed I hit the wall. Super small bathroom and just not at all worth the high price we paid. Will never stay at another Sleep Inn again.... first time and our last time !! read more
