Nothing beats the original but this spit does come close! A drive to SF is not always possible but this place is! If you're craving award winning pizza this is it! I've been waiting for there to be a Slice House by Tony Gemignani in the East Bay closer to us, and love that there is a new addition to the Castro Valley Marketplace (and the slice house) is now here! I'm a big fan of Tony's pizza and also Pizza de Laura over here in Berkeley (the owner trained with Tony). I've def had my share of Tony's from the OG location in SF, inside Chase Center, and slices from locations in SF, Walnut Creek, San Leandro, and now Castro Valley. Served more so grab & go, although there is seating at the market to eat in-person, I grabbed some slices as I was on the run. Can't go wrong with their classic slice of cheese, pepperoni, and the Detroit-style Hawaiian (comes with Applewood Smoked Bacon, Honey, Smoked Ham, and pineapple rings, not chunks!). To note: they offer NY, Detroit, Grandma, and Sicilian-style pizza. I would research their menu for a few minutes before ordering because there's some decisions of flavor and style to be made! They also offer antipasti options like meatballs, specialties like the meatball sub, salads, dessert, a few pastas, and fun retail items like Tony's Hot Oil and a to-go pizza kit. FYI: 2oz. sides of ranch are $1. Other sides include house-made local hot honey, pesto, and grandma sauce :) Next time I'm in the area, I'm def coming back and hey, might even order a whole pie. I'm a huge fan of slice house, I originally would go to the one in SF & then living in Castro valley I started going to the one in San Leandro so I think adding this to the Castro Valley Market Place was a great idea & thankfully Castro Valley seems to be on the up & coming when it comes to restaurants & business which is cool to watch since I've been here for about 13 years now. The service is always fast in my opinion but I typically am a 2 slice type of person. I don't really care what anyone says but a good cheese pizza is hard to find & theirs is damn good by daughter gets a slice from here almost every Tuesday it's her favorite treat of the week I also enjoy the one with mascarpone & Italian sausage on top - it's minor when it comes to spice but I personally love spice so I always add hot honey. In my opinion the pizza is great on its own so it doesn't really require all the extra toppings. I'm also a fan of the crust it kinda taste like sourdough? As for the ambiance it's inside of the market - the seating is all over the place & this seems to be one of the busier restaurants in here. Location had me worried but just know it's inside of what seems to be an inside market... you go in this building and there's a meat market, other food places and a small grocery market. We LOVED our Detroit deep dish style pizza. I can't speak to anything other than our order as it's our first visit to Slice house. The baked cheese edges, drool! The fact that the sauce sits on top allowed us to each choose how much or how little sauce we preferred. It was perfect! Ngl, it was a bit pricy. And before taking it home and eating it, I would have said I won't go back. But after tasting it, my daughter and I both felt it was worth the cost. I had never heard of this chain before, was in town for work and we went here for lunch at the recommendation of a co worker. All our pizza was delicious! I got the Grandma and it was really really good. Service with a smile and a laugh. This little restaurant in Castro Valley marketplace really surprised me with the level of friendly and attentive service. My mom is gluten-free and they jumped in to help her find something that would work for her. We both ended up getting market salad, which was a good salad. I did think the dressing was a little sweet, but I also liked that it was a balsamic (the sweet part) and olive oil instead of a premixed dressing. I probably could've asked for something less sweet. What I loved about the dressing is that they used olive oil and not canola oil. Most restaurants use canola, and olive oil is so much better. I've tried the pizza from here before. It was brought to our work from someone so it was a little cold, so it's hard to give an accurate review, but it tasted good. Tony's in the city he has my favorite pizza, and it's the same owner, so I'd like to believe that it's just as good as there. The Detroit pizzas are my favorite! Again the stand out was the service. I wouldn't say it was fast food, but it was counter service, and I just really felt the service was above and beyond. I'll definitely go back, and next time I'll absolutely get pizza! read more

Have always been a fan of Tony's pizzerias - from Pyzanos to Tony's Napolenta, Capos and now Slice House. First time at this location and it did not disappoint. They had a lot more pizza-by-the-slice options than posted online, which I was so happy about. There were at least 6 choices. I had the Popeyes Detroit style slice. It was full of flavor - great balance of the parm, ricotta and garlic. After they reheated it, crust was crispy and as good as freshly baked. It was a huge slice, a lot of carbs but I finished it! I also ordered the arugula bacon salad. It was a good shareable size salad. They didn't skimp on the bacon. Was good. Service was great. We ordered our slice and the guy brought it to our table. I was able to get a parking space and a table, so no complaints, but I can see it being a little tricky during peak hours. read more

Had lunch here on a weekday and it was pretty busy. I tried both the New York and Detroit style pizza slices. I dined here so the pizza was warmed up in the rolling toaster. The New York style pizza got really hard after being warmed up in the toaster so it was hard to chew. The Detroit pizza slice was nicely warmed though and it was perfect. Really good pizza. I used to go to the San Leandro location, but finally they opened up a location in Castro Valley. Definitely the best pizza in CV/Hayward area. Lots of different combos, lots of different styles. I normally get NY style or Detroit. I usually get the combo with everything in a large. Good value, high quality dough and toppings. I've told everyone I know in the area about slice house and have introduced it to many of my friends. I just found out they have a points program. I wish I knew that about 8 or 9 large pizzas ago.... oh well. I'm letting anyone reading this about it now. You're welcome. I just found out that there is a HH. Buy a beer, get a pepperoni or cheese slice for $3. This seems like a decent deal if you don't have craft beer on deck at home, or if you just want to eat out. This is the first time I've been to this location. Glad they opened one at the Castro Valley Marketplace. I came here on a weeknight and did a walk-in order. The line to order went quickly. After ordering my pizza, it took about 25 min to get my order. I ordered the Chkn Bacon Ranch with Detroit crust. It was good! Loved the crust! It was crispy and buttery on the bottom and on the sides. Loved the thickness of the crust as well. The ranch dressing, chicken, tomatoes, and onions were all good. No complaints. read more

It was a hike for most of us from different parts of East Bay but, oh, so so worth it! Location: The restaurant is inside the Marketplace with sufficient parking all around it. The Marketplace is still filling up and provides an attractive location. We were a bakers dozen and we tried a bunch of different pies. The GM Colin was awesome and personally took care of ensuring that the pies came out sequentially at the correct temperature. So many choices and just one stomach! This place is always so packed, and rightfully so! Always order ahead of time, so you do not have to wait very long in line. There is also seating at this marketplace if you choose to eat there. Welcome back Tony Gemignani! I used to frequent their location when they started Pyzano's on E Castro Valley Blvd and then sadly closed about 10 years ago. Their pizza was always the "go-to" gourmet pizza when we wanted a break from the chain spots. Fast forward and he has expanded and become an icon in the pizza world with various styles of pizzas: California, Detroit, New York, Sicilian etc. Their hearty sauce is money with a nice balance of sweetness, salt and spices and for me, makes the pizza with their fresh ingredients. First visit friendly and efficient but didn't have any Detroit-style pizza available around 2pm on a weekday. Decided to pick up an arugula salad as always a hit for me. Bacon, freshly-made mozzarella balls, shaved parmesan, sweet peppers and balsamic reduction with olive oil. Flavors all meld nicely with texture. Limited seating inside. Tables that used to be available outside have all been removed and some construction is happening. Hopefully, they're bringing back the seating for customers to dine onsite. read more

This used to be the best pizza chain in the Bay Area, but they've really lost their touch as they've expanded. Given how expensive they are now, it's just not worth it. The employees really don't seem to like working there, the pizza is about a 7 out of 10 at most locations, and they don't allow half-and-half options anymore. They seem to be going the "charge more and provide less" route--which is typical when private equity buys you out and ruins everything. I've since found a few other places that are a much better experience, so I've stopped going entirely. I used to go twice a week. read more

I like how you can pick different styles, e.g., Sicilian, thin crust (NY), Detroit, etc. And I'm sure they're all as delicious as the one we had. The Castro Valley Marketplace is a tough place for restaurants. I'm not sure any of them have been there more than two years and the turnover is crazy. So I really hope Slice House can survive. I love this location! This place is roomy and has great options. The parking was in the back and easy to find. The Bacon Arugula salad is my favorite to side with a slice of thin pepperoni. If you've been to any Slice House, you know that the pizza is phenomenal. Sure, it's considerably more expensive than the other true pizza chains, but I believe it's worth it. What really prompted me to write this review was the incredible friendly service I received today at lunch from guy at the counter. I had an odd request, and it was met with a smile and a "yes, we can help." He really made my day. Also, at time of writing, this location had a 3.9 star rating that feels skewed far too low by Elite yelpers and maybe a Karen or two. Trust me when I say it's a lot closer to 5 stars. read more

This was a great find! The Slice House is inside an area that has several eateries and a small fancy neighborhood market. The staff was friendly. When you come into the area there is a glass case with pizza slices. It has a lot to offer. I imagine it changes from day to day. The pizzas we had were pepperoni and one that had veggies and ham and Alfredo sauce. I wish I would have looked at the name. It was all delicious. I even took home a slice of cheese for my daughter. The slices are huge - really two big slices. The space was nice and clean but small. There was another sitting area around the corner. Overall it's a good deal. I have experienced pizza made by Tony Gemignani when he was at the Castro Valley 580 Market Place off of Castro Valley Blvd, some years ago. I don't remember the pizza being anything special, but that could just be because I am not really a huge pizza eater. The serving size/slice is ample, the line moved quickly and the staff was very friendly. My only complaints are, I watched an employee fix her hair and then she proceeded to help customers with their food orders without washing her hands. Because I worked in catering and food service, I pay attention to this. There should be handwashing going on after touching hair or face. No one wants to imagine eating hair or face oils in their food. The other concern, rather than complaint is that the line when it starts raining will either be diverted to the inside of the natural food market causing a jam up of patrons ordering and waiting for their orders or be diverted outside into the fall/winter weather. I found the prices to be pretty competitive and I will surely be checking out the slice of the day. I'll try it again. This overall was a good experience. read more

Great selection of slices! I came here for a post-dinner dinner and was pleasantly surprised by the variety of slices offered. We got a Detroit style slice and it was heavenly. The dough was so chewy yet crispy on the edges. The quality of the ingredients is great. It's a very small seating area so I would probably do take out here.
