You can tell everything here is made from scratch -- the crust had that perfect balance of crisp and chew, the sauce tasted freshly made, and the toppings were bursting with flavor. You're sure to find something that calls to you and something you will love. Lately, we've been on a calzone kick. Tony stuffs his full of both creamy ricotta and mozz with whatever fillings you choose. When it comes out of the oven, it's brushed over with a bit of garlic butter, and that is just the perfect icing on the cake. It's always cooked through but never burnt, and the ooey gooey insides are perfect when dipping in his marinara sauce. I want to go on record and say he has the best "red sauce" of any pizzeria in Greensboro. Super addictive, especially with some garlic knots. My partner has been holding out on me. I've been living in Greensboro for over a decade and he casually mentioned a place near UNCG's campus that does a "pretty decent calzone." Actually, he saw a review from Mikaela B. that got him thinking about Slices by Tony (thanks Mikaela!). I was equally PUMPED to try out this new-to-me place and angry I didn't know about it sooner. There are only a couple places in Greensboro that has a good calzone and I was excited to be introduced to another. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The interior seems really small on the outside, but it does stretch pretty far back. That being said, seating is somewhat limited and groups would not do well in there.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It really is a grab and go type place, but we had the time so we sat and enjoyed our calzone.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The calzones are huge! Even the "small" was easily two-meals worth of food and they cook them to perfection. There is nothing more rage-inducing than to bite into raw pizza dough. Another often missed detail is the quality of the sauce. Theirs was excellent. Robust tomato and garlic flavor, AND, they have it in a really large ramekin. Not at all stingy on the ingredients either, but not overly stuffed. Perfect distribution of ricotta, mozzarella, and pepperoni. Looking forward to returning again! It was Saturday night. I had no plans for the evening nor did I particularly want to do anything. My son had hooked up my TV in the living room so I could enjoy something on on the tube. My son-in-law got me a new router so I could have internet on my screened in back porch and watch TikTok on my tablet. The question became, what am I going to eat while watching? Suddenly, this incredible craving came over me for Sicilian pizza. Not pizza mind you but Sicilian pizza! When I was a kid in the Bronx if you had $0.15 you could get a slice of pizza, but if you had $0.25 you could get a slice of Sicilian. To this day. I see Sicilian pizza as a step up, a special treat, the pizza of all pizzas. Erik and I kicked around a few places where I could find a good Sicilian pie, and I ultimately decided to give Slices by Tony a chance since I had never been there and it was by by my old stomping grounds at UNCG and it would be a chance to write a new Yelp review! I found parking right in front of the joint. I don't know if that would be the case during the school year, but I was lucky this time! It literally was right across the street from the old music and theater building on Tate Street. Felt like home and I was back in the 70's!! I ordered ahead online so the pizza was ready when I arrived. I love that it's family owned and it was waiting for me. I came home, got into my pajamas, stuck a couple of slices in the oven just to crisp it up a bit, made a big glass of diet Coke with ice and had a freaking ball. Don't judge me, but I ate four of the eight slices that very night. Two slices in front of the TV and two slices on the porch watching TikTok! Oh man, it was so good. It was the right choice and the right place. I went to sleep that night on a full belly and it was wonderful! I've heard really good things about their regular pizza and their sandwiches. We are UNCG alumni so this is a special place for us. It's walkable to campus on Tate Street. They have been here over 10 years. Tony and the rest of the staff were always awesome. You can order by the slice and our favorites are the white, bbq chicken, and mac n cheese. They also have salads, soups, subs, appetizers, pasta dishes, calzones, stromboli's and desserts. I remember the mozzarella sticks being a favorite of ours as well. Just so welcoming and great service. I went on a weekday morning after they opened. Guy behind the counter got me my food but told me that I had to wait for the boss to come in before I could pay. Owner came in very shortly afterwards so it wasn't a problem, but it seemed a bit strange. Unfortunately, the pizza was overwhelming. I heard this was the best pizza in Greensboro. It wasn't bad, but wasn't great either. Just for context, I'm from the northeast and grew up eating great pizza from local mom and pop pizza shops. Compared to those, this place was "meh" but I suppose in the Greensboro context it might be one of the better places. The variety, unique pizzas, and quality ingredients always makes me come back whenever I have a pizza crave....and selling by the slices too, can't beat that at all. The perfect sauce ratio and never overcooked pizza. Always greeted well when entering and staff is very welcoming. This last visit I had a (what's typically known as) grandmas's pizza (not sure if they're calling that as well). But it's by far my favorite pizza there outside of their classic NY style pepperoni. Love this place! Has been my go-to lunch spot for the past 6 years. Generally I do take it to go and go back to my office, as I am taking food back for coworkers as well, but the times that I do eat in, it is a welcomed experience. The service is quick, as I just get a slice or two of the premade pizzas and they just have to crisp them up in the massive ovens. I may or may not get a drink, but they recently switched from Mr. Pib to Dr. Pepper so I am in favor of that change. My go-to slice is the white pizza (no marinara sauce - but be prepared to ward off vampires from the lingering garlic). I'd have a picture for you but I inhale every slice I get, much to the disappointment of my mouth. You think I'd know by now to let it cool ever so slightly - nope! The ambiance is very laid back - mainly tables that seat 4. If you bring a crowd be prepared to sit at multiple tables. They have a wall full of foreign currency and some autographed pictures on the wall. Ok, so I've gotten this place delivered to my home and office a few times. (Don't judge me, it's that good ) Be hungry when you order. There is always left overs and I am here for it. Food is always hot and freaking delicious. Garlic knots are life! Do NOT let the dark brown on top fool you. These babies are so soft inside and just the perfect amount of crispy on the outside. I'm an absolute addict for them. I got a sandwich this time. Hot Italian. It was delicious. I ate one half at work and saved the other half for dinner. I've also gotten their lasagna. I love the mac & cheese pizza, plus other offerings like margherita, bianca, ham & pineapple, supreme, Buffalo chicken... tons of options! It's hard to sometimes find more than just cheese and pepperoni by the slice so I love that they offer that. They also of course offer tons of whole pies with unique, gourmet toppings. I'm dying to try one of the Sicilian pizzas! Their by the slice options have a traditional NY style thinner crust. I personally like my crust not so crunchy so this was perfect for me. The owner was working when we were in and he was very kind. They have quite a few non pizza options too, calzones and subs, but also pasta dishes like gnocchi bolognese, baked ziti and lasagna. We have been pleasantly greeted on both visits so far by Tony, who is incredibly friendly with the most welcoming smile. Newer to the area this year and finding good pizza is always next to impossible. Well, now we found it in Greensboro. Both times we've had the Tony special as a Sicilian. The thick crust, toppings, right amount of sauce, crispy edges, DIVINE! The Sicilian only comes in one size so we always eat pizza for a few days but MAN, is it worth it! It's delicious! Love the buttery crispy edges! Love the thick bread crust! So delicious and the perfect mix of toppings. It's so good we haven't tried anything else yet. This place is AMAZING! I have always noticed this place on tate street but never thought of eating here. I came since my boyfriend wanted to get a quick bite and pizza was on his mind. I walked in and was already drawn to all the delicious pizza they had on display to choose from. I ordered the small caesar salad and was very satisfied with the portion. The salad came with two garlic knots, they were delicious and tasted fresh. I recommend dipping them in the marinara sauce that comes with the pizza. The grated parmesan on the salad was my favorite I always love seeing actual grated cheese. The buffalo chicken pizza was very flavorful. Lots of buffalo sauce but also not overpowering. I drove into Greensboro with the intention of grabbing a quick slice of quality pie. The reviews were solid so I felt it was a safe bet. I got two slices ... the "Grandma" and a regular pepperoni slice. The Grandma was not bad. No complaints. Cooked well but i would give it a generous 3 star rating. The NY pepperoni was undercooked. No color on the crust at all and loaded with cheap, greasy cheese. It was not good at all. Far too greasy and barely any taste of bread and tomato. For a college kid late night snack, probably OK. But not something I would ever get again. Rating on this slice is 1 star. All of the pizzas lacked color and frankly, character. After looking at them all I would go for their Mac and cheese pizza. A narrow, shotgun space with pies displayed the length of one side, Slices by Tony looks like it was lifted from 3rd Avenue and plopped down on Tate Street. Maybe it was... The pizza is the real NYC deal with an excellent thin crust, large slices, and great cheese. Tony offers more than the traditional NY style if you'd prefer Sicilian, or just a thicker crust.
