I can't believe i've never written a review for Tony! A total oversight on my part. [[HIGHLIGHT]]My favorite pizza spot for a NY style slice without a doubt, and it also just feels perfectly like a little slice of NY nestled next to a bodega on Tate street.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They have all things Italian, whether you're just looking for a slice, a calzone, sandwiches, pasta, and even some more esoteric pizza options like a mac n cheese pizza. You're sure to find something that calls to you and something you will love. Lately, we've been on a calzone kick. Tony stuffs his full of both creamy ricotta and mozz with whatever fillings you choose. When it comes out of the oven, it's brushed over with a bit of garlic butter, and that is just the perfect icing on the cake. It's always cooked through but never burnt, and the ooey gooey insides are perfect when dipping in his marinara sauce. I want to go on record and say he has the best "red sauce" of any pizzeria in Greensboro. Super addictive, especially with some garlic knots. The one thing I have never had there is any of the Italian dishes. I'm sure they are good, but I really just think of this place as a pizzeria. One day I will partake, I am sure.

My partner has been holding out on me. I've been living in Greensboro for over a decade and he casually mentioned a place near UNCG's campus that does a "pretty decent calzone." Actually, he saw a review from Mikaela B. that got him thinking about Slices by Tony (thanks Mikaela!). I was equally PUMPED to try out this new-to-me place and angry I didn't know about it sooner. There are only a couple places in Greensboro that has a good calzone and I was excited to be introduced to another. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The interior seems really small on the outside, but it does stretch pretty far back. That being said, seating is somewhat limited and groups would not do well in there.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It really is a grab and go type place, but we had the time so we sat and enjoyed our calzone.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The calzones are huge! Even the "small" was easily two-meals worth of food and they cook them to perfection. There is nothing more rage-inducing than to bite into raw pizza dough. Another often missed detail is the quality of the sauce. Theirs was excellent. Robust tomato and garlic flavor, AND, they have it in a really large ramekin. Not at all stingy on the ingredients either, but not overly stuffed. Perfect distribution of ricotta, mozzarella, and pepperoni. Looking forward to returning again! I might try one of their interesting pizzas by the slice.... but more likely, I'm gonna want the calzone.

very cool neighborhood pizza joint vibe!

It was Saturday night. I had no plans for the evening nor did I particularly want to do anything. My son had hooked up my TV in the living room so I could enjoy something on on the tube. My son-in-law got me a new router so I could have internet on my screened in back porch and watch TikTok on my tablet. The question became, what am I going to eat while watching? Suddenly, this incredible craving came over me for Sicilian pizza. Not pizza mind you but Sicilian pizza! When I was a kid in the Bronx if you had $0.15 you could get a slice of pizza, but if you had $0.25 you could get a slice of Sicilian. To this day. I see Sicilian pizza as a step up, a special treat, the pizza of all pizzas. Erik and I kicked around a few places where I could find a good Sicilian pie, and I ultimately decided to give Slices by Tony a chance since I had never been there and it was by by my old stomping grounds at UNCG and it would be a chance to write a new Yelp review! I found parking right in front of the joint. I don't know if that would be the case during the school year, but I was lucky this time! It literally was right across the street from the old music and theater building on Tate Street. Felt like home and I was back in the 70's!! I ordered ahead online so the pizza was ready when I arrived. I love that it's family owned and it was waiting for me. I came home, got into my pajamas, stuck a couple of slices in the oven just to crisp it up a bit, made a big glass of diet Coke with ice and had a freaking ball. Don't judge me, but I ate four of the eight slices that very night. Two slices in front of the TV and two slices on the porch watching TikTok! Oh man, it was so good. It was the right choice and the right place. I went to sleep that night on a full belly and it was wonderful! I've heard really good things about their regular pizza and their sandwiches. I would definitely go back. It's not that far from where I live, it brings back nostalgia, and that Sicilian was excellent. Check them out.

Updated review: still my favorite place for pizza in GSO. Never once had a bad pizza or experience here. The variety, unique pizzas, and quality ingredients always makes me come back whenever I have a pizza crave....and selling by the slices too, can't beat that at all. The perfect sauce ratio and never overcooked pizza. Always greeted well when entering and staff is very welcoming. This last visit I had a (what's typically known as) grandmas's pizza (not sure if they're calling that as well). But it's by far my favorite pizza there outside of their classic NY style pepperoni. The sauce was ample and good amount of sweetness, but the texture and bake was pure perfection. I ALWAYS recommend to out of towners to go to Slices by Tony, hell even people who live in this city, I tell them to go because it's the best.

    Great counter

I'm a self proclaimed pizza snob. I've wanted to head over to Slices for a bit, and finally made it over with a friend to check it out. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place is very clean, welcoming, lots of places to sit on an early Saturday afternoon.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It was busy, don't get me wrong! Just not a 'sit and hang forever' place.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The slices were great! I got a pesto slice and my friend got pepperoni. Mine was perfectly crispy and pesto-ey: I'd honestly like even more but I'm a sauce gal. My friend's slice was also delicious: cheesy and chewy! Would def come back to snag another: A+ slice

Ok, so I've gotten this place delivered to my home and office a few times. (Don't judge me, it's that good ) Be hungry when you order. There is always left overs and I am here for it. Food is always hot and freaking delicious. Garlic knots are life! Do NOT let the dark brown on top fool you. These babies are so soft inside and just the perfect amount of crispy on the outside. I'm an absolute addict for them. I got a sandwich this time. Hot Italian. It was delicious. I ate one half at work and saved the other half for dinner. I've also gotten their lasagna. It's not traditional. But it's interesting and different in all the best ways possible. Definitely not stoffers. Service is always perfect as far as my order being hot and correct. love this place!

By the time I left around 6, there were people standing and waiting to be seated. The patio was open with one couple enjoying the nice weather and relative quiet of outdoors. Embur recently relocated to Smyres Place in Greensboro and the new space feels much smaller than I expected. The design reminded me of what I imagine a modern restaurant in Peru might look like. Industrial with solid wood floors, warm finishes, and a large wine display. There are around 25 to 26 tables, mostly two tops and four tops. The largest table seats six, but they will push tables together for larger groups. While I was there, a group of more than 20 came in celebrating something and they were seated quickly without disrupting the rest of the room. The small patio has outdoor seating with about 8 tables and a they have bar area with about nine comfortable seats. The menu took me a minute to understand but I ended up liking the setup. You choose your entrée, which comes with set ingredients, and then choose your protein. Each protein has a different price, so you can control the cost of your meal somewhat. Most menu items can also be made gluten free according to the menu, and vegetarian options seem easy to do. For my appetizer, I ordered the flatbread. Perfection. Rosemary, olive oil, sea salt. Crispy outside, soft inside, and so flavorful I almost ate the whole thing before my meal was served. The server came with water right away and remain attentive but not intrusive the whole time. For my entree, I ordered the Arroz Chaufa with salmon. Arroz Chaufa literally means fried rice. At first the dish seemed a bit salty to me, but once I added the green sauce that comes with it (served on the side), everything balanced out. The green sauce has very mild heat, so if you are not a fan of spicy food, that is the one I would recommend. There is a list of sauces so I assume you can customize your entree. According to my server, the other sauces bring more heat. The salmon was excellent, well seasoned but not too much, and moist. The portion was ample. I was very hungry but I had leftovers to bring home. Service was exactly what I want when dining alone. Attentive without being intrusive. I watched Netflix while I ate and enjoyed my meal without feeling rushed or bothered. The noise level is average for a busy small restaurant. Comfortable enough to relax, but if you want to talk to someone in your group a couple of seats away, you will need your outside voice. This place feels upscale without being fussy, so expected to pay more than average, but I thought it was good value for the quality and portions. I loved this restaurant and will absolutely go back. Must order: Rosemary flatbread appetizer. Tip: Ask about sauce heat before ordering. If you do not like spicy food, start with the green sauce.

The pasta was cooked just right -- not too al dente -- and the flavors were delicious. My sister ordered the grilled salmon salad, and the salmon was cooked perfectly while the salad itself was fresh and delish. We both started with Aperol Spritzes, which were perfect for the beginning of summer weather! The ambiance was warm, inviting, and homey, and our server was so attentive throughout the meal. We were celebrating my nephew's birthday/graduation, and not only did he bring out dessert for the occasion, but he also surprised us with an extra dessert and gave us so much bread and sauce to take home. Such thoughtful hospitality all around. We loved our experience and will definitely be back next time we're in Greensboro!

Unfortunately, our Mother's Day experience at this restaurant was extremely disappointing…read more As visitors to the area, we chose this restaurant hoping for a special holiday meal. We arrived when the restaurant opened and were among the first guests seated, yet the service was remarkably slow from the start. It took approximately 45 minutes to receive coffee, and when it finally arrived, it was undrinkable. We were told there was a cappuccino machine available, but no one on staff appeared to know how to operate it. The wait for food was even more frustrating. After waiting about an hour, our meals finally arrived, only to be met with food that was largely overcooked, burnt, or hard. The waffles appeared to be pre-made frozen mini waffles rather than freshly prepared, which was especially disappointing for a Mother's Day brunch. What was most concerning was the apparent lack of organization. Throughout our visit, food accumulated under the heat lamps while staff and management seemed unsure where dishes belonged or which tables they were intended for. The operation felt disorganized and unprepared for the volume of guests they chose to serve that day. While we understand that holidays can be challenging for restaurants, customers should still receive edible food and reasonable service for the prices being charged. Instead, the experience felt like the restaurant was focused on maximizing holiday revenue without adequately delivering on food quality or customer service. Sadly, this was one of the most disappointing dining experiences we've had, and we would not return.
