Still, the name Shuko had me curious, it's one of Guatemala's most iconic street foods, so I had to try it. For those who don't know, a traditional Guatemalan shuko is street food done right: grilled bun, steamed hot dog, Guatemalan-style guacamole (no onions or tomatoes), sauerkraut, mustard, ketchup, and mayo. Their take here is a bit different no guac on mine, but still packed with flavor. A mix of grilled meats, sauerkraut, and condiments all stuffed into a roll. Definitely not traditional, but still tasty. I also tried one of their pupusas, and it hit the spot. A classic revuelta melted cheese and chicharrón oozing out of a perfectly griddled corn masa pocket. Comfort food, plain and simple. Only downside The fries. They were undercooked, a little limp. Just needed a bit more time in the fryer. But overall, if you're into street food with a Central American twist, Shuko 502 is worth the stop.

Unfortunately, our experience was a complete miss. Parking here is awkward. There's not a proper lot, more of a driveway with grass nearby and people seem to haphazardly park with the idea that they'll be getting out in an exact order where they can just drive forward, over a curb, and exit. For those of us in smaller cars, that isn't really an option. The interior is well decorated to give an upscale feel. On a Saturday evening, they had a singer in a sequin dress and a beautiful voice that made it sound like you were listening to the kind of songs you'd hear on Sunny 99.1 or on Delilah's request show, but live. Right off the bat, we had issues with the drink orders. Items were missing, they were serving tea to people who ordered soda, sweet tea to people who ordered unsweet, etc. The worst was a drink from the bar that came out incorrectly THREE times. After the third time, the waiter offered to comp her something else. My friend took the waiter's offer and ordered a soft drink, but the bartender brought out the drink a fourth time anyway. When she got the bill, the soft drink was charged and the fourth take on the alcoholic beverage, which she never drank, was "comped" after she'd already told them she didn't want it anymore. The waiter dared defend what happened, which I felt was in poor taste since HE was the one who offered to get her something else at no charge. The entrees took forever to come out. We don't know what happened, but we were waiting almost an hour for the food. I was ready to get the hell out of there, and had it just been my wife and me, we probably would have. Unfortunately, we were in a bigger group and we all had long drives home, so we didn't want to be rude. The food was completely forgettable. I don't know of anyone who had anything good to say about what they got. My pork belly was decently seasoned and cooked through, but not quite well enough cooked to give the kind of sizzle and texture that made it worthwhile. The portions were also so small that I wasn't satisfied. My wife ordered the fish and chips. Instead of a whitefish or catfish, they served her fried salmon. The flavor and texture was... subpar... at best, and hardly the kind of thing you'd expect when ordering Fish & Chips in the south. Rather than wait another 30 minutes for a replacement entree, and probably get it wrong given how they were handling the drink orders, she powered it down and we mutually decided that we'd never bother to stop by this place ever again.

I have never received a half a glass Lemon Drop martini. I noticed others ordering the Lemon Drop martinis an all had a full martini glass. Really odd and the taste was not worth the effort of ordering. I noticed the Lemon Drop Martini came with a surcharge. Meaning I was billed for the martini and then another misc charge. I have never been charged a surcharge for a Lemon Drop martini. The menu does not say there is a surcharge. Charge what you are going to charge on one line, in total, like everyone else does OR explain yourself and teach the 20 year old server the answer so she is aware and can share with her customers. So I asked for the manager. Cameron huffed on over like he was in a super bad mood and serving up a huge dose of bad attitude unbecoming of a restaurant manager. I politely inquired about the surcharge for the Lemon Drop martini and was told "that's the way it's been for 8 years and we are not going to change it for you." Apparently when you order the menu item of a Lemon Drop martini you are charged for a shot PLUS the up charge of placing the shot into a martini glass. None of this is explained on the menu. Perhaps state that when ordered because I don't work for Monument Inn and am not privvy to this special wackadoodle way of charging their customers for a martini listed on the menu. Then to be almost attacked as Cameron was apparently perturbed that a paying customer had the audacity to question about this insane way of pricing. I had enough of his belligerent and argumentative behavior because Cameron was doubling down with his less than stellar attitude. As such, I told Cameron he was about the rudest person I have encountered in this service industry and dismissed him. No customer deserves that kind of treatment. Thank Cameron's inappropriate interaction for the one star which Yelp forces us to give. Otherwise I'd not given a star at all. Cameron's nastiness ruined the entire experience. Well that and the overcooked fish with the lackluster Pontchartain sauce. Stick to their fried food menu items which is where this place shines. Oh and don't order the Lemon Drop martini.
