Summary for phone Yelpers and the TLDR crowd: Without question the very best breakfast you're going to find before heading off to Coachella music festival. Another reviewer nailed the description as it is, essentially, a Denny's / IHOP styled restaurant but with great food with a more unique menu at similar prices. Expect to get out of here for $12 without a drink. If you live in Indio you already know this place is great. Situation: We run up against the same quandary year after year. With a tip from Tony, our amazingly gracious host, we headed to Sloan's for breakfast to kick off the third day of Coachella 2009 (as well as the Monday before leaving for Phoenix). Getting there: Right off of Highway 111. That's about all I can tell you since I don't know the area. The road begins to curve and the restaurant is on the south side... I think. Parking: This is your standard standalone Denny's type lot. One thing worth checking for a quick laugh: There is a shoe repair place in the strip of businesses about 50 feet from Sloan's. Outside of said shoe repair was a beautiful Corvette with the customized license plate "SHOE ONE." Don't let anyone tell you there isn't money in shoe repair. Entering: Sloan's is pretty funny during Coachella weekend. On one hand you've got your regulars consisting of ol' silver haired folks with their tennis balled walkers next to them and cretinous middle aged Indio denizens. Juxtapose this with tatted and pierced teens, twenty and thirty-somethings and, well, you've got every generation dining together in the middle of nowhere family diner. Menu: Surprisingly enough, I grabbed one of their menus when I was in Indio and I still have it! They've got the things you'd expect but quite a few more creative items as well including: corned beef hash, scrambles / skillets, pesto chicken pasta, and a bunch of awesome omelettes. Check this out: First off here's what comes with the omelettes as per the menu: Made with three eggs or egg substitute. Presented with one of the following: Three buttermilk pancakes or hash browns with choice of toast, biscuit or a blueberry muffin or homefries with choice of toast, biscuit or a blueberry muffin. Rancher's Omelette - Hickory ham, Hormel Black Label bacon, sausage, onions, peppers, Swiss cheese and hash browns smothered in country gravy - $9.59 (I don't know why they're so proud of using Hormel products.) Chipotle Bacon Omelette - A fluffy omelette filled with jack and cheddar cheeses, fresh pico de gallo and smoky chipotle bacon. Topped with avocado and sour cream - $8.99 Service: Our waitresses on both days were attentive and handled the Coachella crowds without issue. Our drinks were filled and our food came out very quickly. The food: Everyone enjoyed their food the first day we went... except me. I ordered a mess of a chipotle chicken sandwich (i have a picture of it in my Yelp pics) and it was a total 2 1/2 star sandwich. Two of my friends got the rancher's omelette while another got the firehouse scramble skillet. With the exception of me it was high fives all around. After unsuccessfully arguing against going to Sloan's the day we were set to go back home, I was forced into seconds. This time I smarted up and ordered the chipotle bacon omelette with side of three pancakes, a blueberry muffin, and homefries. It was a truly American amount of food. None of us could finish our whole meal... I mean, who the hell could? Each menu item is like a contest. The omelette was delicious in that way you keep picking at it long after you know you're beyond stuffed. It was two months ago so I can't detail the experience but I do remember saying "thank god this place isn't in Phoenix." Conclusion: If you have ANY reason to end up in Indio, check this place out. It's an unglamorous, delicious, pig-out that's basically a three course meal for less than $10 (entree). Look to get out of there after tax, tip, drink for about $15. Drinks are $2.29 for soda (ouch) so consider sticking with water. If this place were anywhere else it would deserve 4 1/2 stars. But it's not anywhere else... it's in Indio, CA where there is... nothing. FIVE STARS! read more

Great stop for a hearty diner-y breakfast. We came in off a hellacious overnight SF---Indio roadtrip (like many other Yelpers here, we were here for some Coachella action). This place was an oasis of breakfast for us weary travelers. Spicy bacon omelette was delicious and huge. I loved the ample sour cream on top, and the eggs were the perfect amount of fluffy. I rarely crave home fries, thoroughly enjoyed these ones though. Their crazy pancakes look delicious (anytime ice cream enters the breakfast equation is pretty exciting), but we were too full to give them a shot. Service was extremely attentive and friendly. Had breakfast at Sloan's this morning and boy was it packed! It was packed with locals which speaks volumes about how the community values this restaurant. Was it a step up from IHop and Denny's? Oh yes. We're the portions ginormous? Holy cow, yes. Was the food awesome, unique or special in some way? Not really, but it was good as was the service, and the check was quite reasonable. The only real bummer we experienced was the coffee of all things! Something is seriously wrong with their coffee. From the first whiff we could both tell something has broken down in their coffee brewing/serving system. It was almost a spoiled or rancid taste which is still lingering in the back of my pallet. We will likely go back there from time to time, but it just isn't a 'we gotta come back here again!' Kind of place. read more

I've been coming here for awhile and lately I've noticed if you don't personally know the waitresses they just completely ignore you and just stand around talking to their regulars or snowbirds. Just because I am a young person doesn't mean I don't tip well. It's disappointing and annoying. Proclaimed "Best Breakfast in Indio" from a flyer, this place was definitely up to par. Avoiding the ghastly long lines at IHOP, this should be the place to be. Seemed like a pretty hot local spot, with senior citizens representing big time. Of course this was besides the rest of place being fille up with coachella folks. The omelettes are pretty good and the OJ was really good. Fast and friendly service definitely a nice place for breakfast at the very least. read more

Greasy, typical and cheap. This is exactly the thing every hipster needs after a weekend at Coachella. Needless to say, it definitely hits the spot and was delicious enough to bring tears to our eyes! Yes, real food and substance remains will apparently do that to you. In any case, since this is located in the middle of the desert, choices are slim and locals are rampant but makes for the atmosphere, homely. Considering the amount of people in our party, the service was great and very well-handled. Absolutely loved this meal. The biscuit was the best I have ever eaten. I had a senior dinner and it was very reasonably priced, but really, I would return just for the biscuit. It was flakey and buttery with a hint of cheese and herbs on top. Nice staff, good fast service, good atmosphere. They were busy with a crowd of us from square dancing and did not get flustered they way the Sizzler did the night before. This is my Coachella music fest diner! I am the veteran of ***8 Coachellas*** and Sloan's has fed me many, many times. I almost always order the exact same thing - the potato pancakes, a bloody Mary (or 2) and a Dutch Baby Pancake to share amongst the friends. This last year I had to go to Sloans alone and you have no idea how sad I was that I had no one to share that giant, delicious, buttery, sugary pancake with me. Service is always friendly - after all, this is Palm Desert, not West Hollywood. This is a real family restaurant, a dying breed in this fair country of ours. I've always noticed how the staff treats the dirty Coachella kid as well as they treat their regulars. One million A+s for Sloans until the day the sun burns out and there are no more music festivals to attend. read more

I guess my expectations were too great. I asked the waitress if they had maple syrup, she said yes, well when I got it it was NOT maple syrup. The employees need to know the difference if they are working in a restaurant. My husband got the chorizo eggs BENEDICT, the egg is supposed to be poached, not hard boiled cause that's how it was. We ordered ham, was over cooked, salty and just plain awful. We were there today and will never go back, and like I said don't know why this place has four stars. Another thing there is carpet on the floor in the whole place, well let me tell you it is filthy! The path to the restrooms is worse. We had two bites of the food and left. We ordered fish and chips and eggs with hash browns. The fish plate was good but not healthy (deep fried, batter), cole slaw and small ceasar salads were good. Breakfast was fine and good portion of potatoes, but not too tasty. Place was clean, not busy at 8:15pm. Not many options passing through town. Found a new place to stop and grab breakfast on our trips to/from Arizona! Many good breakfast choices.... the Hazelnut French Toast and Date Nut Pancakes were both really good! The service is pretty bad............. at least on our visit last week. And they aren't very flexible with substitutions. Most places with give you potatoes instead of meat when you get a breakfast combo........ but not here. You will take the meat and you will like it!!!!!! read more

The boo and I were looking for a place to grab breakfast on our way to Orange County, and we wanted something that wasn't IHOP or Denny's. Sloans popped up on Yelp and I'm glad we made the stop! This restaurant is located a few miles off the I-10 in Indio, and it was busy on a Saturday morning but there was still lots of tables available. Service was quick and friendly, just the way I like it. They offer all kinds of breakfast staples, but their pancakes are probably the highlight. Light and fluffy and great with syrup, I definitely recommend them. I ordered the omelette with chipotle bacon and avocado, and it came with three pancakes and hash browns. The prices here are amazing, and the quality is superb. I could barely finish my plate, but I'm glad I did. If you're passing through stop by for breakfast, you won't be disappointed. Based on Yelp reviews we had guarded but high expectations. It was not busy, maybe a third full. We were seated right away at a booth by the restrooms. The table had a large area of sticky glue residue from tape that had held a sign. We asked for another booth which they provided immediately. The service was prompt and attentive throughout our visit. Our order of eggs, ham, hasbrowns and biscuit and our order of buttermilk pancakes arrived quickly. The eggs were over easy not medium as ordered, the large piece of ham was nothing special flavor wise, the hash browns were the best of what we ordered and the biscuit was solid not flaky. The pancakes were under done and fell apart, the flavor was good. Being a visitor to the area we would try some other breakfast locations before we would try Sloan's again. read more

This is a great local joint with good food and atmosphere. You are greeted by Mr. Sloan who will take your name for the waiting list. Despite the fact that he seems to be walking so slow he might stop, the wait was less than expected and his system is very affective. Our party of 4 ordered Chili, Fiesta Salad, Classic Pancakes, Eggs Benedict, Apple French Toast. Portion sizes were big, but not ridiculous. Prices are fair, service was attentive. Sloan's was ok for a breakfast place. I wasn't horrible but I've had better. I consider it better than Denny's because the food seems to be fresher. I had the classic eggs benedict. The eggs were over cooked (hard yolks) and the hollandaise was gloppy, but the flavor was good. I liked that there was a thick slab of Canadian bacon. My sister had the spicy bacon omelette. In her words, "there's enough bacon to make a pig". So, if you're a bacon lover, I'd suggest you get that, because they definitely don't skimp on the bacon. We both got home fries as our side and I like them. They tasted fresh, not left over and had lots of nicely cooked bell peppers. The potion sizes were big and right on target for the pricing. We hit this place heading home from camping in Joshua Tree, heading back to San Diego. I didn't mind the crappy bloody Mary or michelada - I just wanted some alcohol with my breakfast. I ordered an insane omelet that comes wrapped around a chili relleno. WTF. Why haven't I seen this before!? What a brilliant idea! My omelet was good. No real need to experience it again though. Ok, so I ran a half marathon on Sunday and burned somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,500 calories in between 2-3 hours. The menu has basic breakfast items (eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns), but also specialty items as well (German pancakes, specialty eggs benedict). The taste and quality of food was a little above average - not OMG delicious but certainly edible, nonetheless. The cost is a bit more than Denny's - we ordered 3 regular sized entrées, 2 kids entrées, and 5 drinks (1 coffee, 2 soft drinks, and 2 children's drinks). We headed to Sloan's before leaving the desert and heading back to LA. After reading the Yelp review's I knew just what to order. For breakfast I had the warmed chocolate chip muffin to start, then ordered the crabcakes benedict. My mouth still waters for this. In all of my foodie experience I have never seen this type of benedict on a menu. The home made hollandaise sauce was to die for. The crab cakes were to my perfection and everything tasted to good. You make think crabcakes and eggs are not a match but at Sloan's they all mesh so well. Another bonus about Sloan's is the full bar!
