Wow, what a lucky find! We hosted our child's baptism reception at California Bistro today and I am beyond grateful for the experience. They were able to accommodate our group of 22 people easily, had no fuss about splitting our checks, and provided ABOVE and BEYOND service to us. Manager Tony felt like an old friend, going out of his way to assure us we would be well cared for (and following through on that promise 100%). Now let me tell you about the food because holy smokes it was amazing. I had the strawberry salad and added a salmon filet. I'm a self proclaimed salmon connoisseur and that filet may have very well been one of the best I've eaten. Also, the strawberries.... I'm not sure who their strawberry supplier is but it has to be some well kept secret because you cannot buy strawberries that fresh and sweet at a grocery store. The dressing was perfectly balanced in a way that complimented the entire plate, without overtaking it. Everyone else's dishes looked equality delicious. Even the coffee was peak quality. The best part of the entire meal was the bill. My husband had to study to receipt to make sure they correctly charged us because at first glance, the bill seemed WAY too cheap for our family of six! (Esp since our teenager ordered a massive steak!) But there was no mistake - we were simply given a fine dining experience at prices even a big family can afford. I had a birthday lunch with 14 ladies. Tony, one of the managers helped me get everything organized. He was so accommodating. Everything I asked for he said NO PROBLEM. Our waitress was Alma & she was amazing also. The table was set with brown napkins but I wanted red. In a flash, brown napkins were exchanged for the red ones. The food was wonderful. All ladies loved what they ordered. All the food came out together & very quickly. I can't say enough good things about my experience there. I don't know why they are not more busy. I think they should advertise because it's hard to find. Also the restaurant is beautiful with hanging chandeliers & nice tables. Give it a try. They have a wonderful Summer Special for dinner. Came here with a group of 6 for dinner. While we arrived separately were taking our time deciding what to eat because we were visiting, the first round of drink service was lacking, having to ask for a couple of drinks more than once. When we were ready to order, it took a while to flag someone down. The first thing we all agreed on were the rolls tasted like frozen rolls from Costco heated up. There was just no flavor. They also only gave us one pat of butter! To share!!!! And these rolls needed to be smothered in butter to give them any kind of taste. I can't speak for everyone else's food, but I had the Chicken Parm, and it was just OK. The chicken didn't have any, extremely little, breading or seasoning making it taste like grilled chicken covered in cheese with some pasta sauce. The portions were big enough, just not tasty enough to finish. They also failed my refill my Diet Coke test. Not good. The servers were nice enough, just slow. We have been here twice. Once for dinner and more recently for happy hour. The food both times was very good. The service for the happy hour was also excellent. There were few people at happy hour possibly because it is early, only 3-5pm . They may attract more people to the bar if it was longer. The last issue we had at happy hour was a fairly weird one. There was music playing, however one of the workers who I assume was on a break was playing some sort of video on his phone. It was so loud it actually was louder than the music. We didn't complain but it was odd that if owner/manager was in house nothing was said. With all of the fabulous restaurants in this area, they need to do better. read more

Ok. Here we go. Second time and last try. Lunch. It's hot and slow and I get it. But... 2 local gals had taken over a booth with BOTH speaker phones on loud. We were 5 tables down and heard the entire conversations. I complained to our poor server who was embarrassed. The manager in the tie was hiding in the kitchen. Finally husband went to the table and asked her to shut off the speaker, which of course triggered big shot with the phone. So.... considering I've been in the restaurant biz for decades this was a deal breaker. They'd rather have two gals run off any one in there, instead of keeping a room full of potential returns. The menu was rather benign, all the usual expected dishes and nothing really stood out. We asked the waiter what was good, and he struggled to answer. Got the calamari to start - crispy, not chewy, but the sauce lacked flavor. The chicken Marsala was a little dry, sauce and noodles were a little bland. It was nearly eleven, but they assured us we could order breakfast, though by the time we were starting to eat, the lunch crowd showed up and the place got more lively. Perhaps too much so, as the noise level was beyond our preference. Service was polite, prompt, professional and attentive. One of us had ab omelette with some fruit and two slices of completely dry toast, which needed something to put on it, maybe butter, more likely jelly or jam. Two of us had pancakes, one with blueberries and one plain, but they added sliced strawberries to the plain order anyhow. Both were tasty and filling. This restaurant has three serving times, breakfast, lunch and dinner, and a full bar for the after work audience. Very sparse for a Saturday night. Sergio, our server, couldn't have been nicer. Drinks took about 29 minutes, which considering the small number of people was a little surprising.. Food was OK ,, some better than others. One ordered lamb and it was a bit rarer than ordered so our friend got an extra drink as an apology which was nice. My dish of scallops was good. Dessert was peach cobbler and that was delicious. Was disappointed the gelato listed on the menu was not available but didn't hinder experience: one person commented that the silverware was cheap and not a good fit for the atmosphere.. I ended up with the tuna on crispy rice. That was very sad. The rice was not crispy, tuna was ok. I ordered the gluten free eggplant Parmesan. Hardly any eggplant and too much sauce and cheese. I applaud the restaurant for having a gluten free option but it was poorly done. While sitting at the bar two people who sat down ended up leaving as they were dissatisfied with the service as they waited a long time and no one ever came over to take a drink or food order. It is sandwiched in between Willies and Foxy's on the corner of Frank Sinatra and hwy. 111. Upon entering it has stark white walls and black floors. I joined a friend from Palm Springs at the bar. We each had a glass of wine, I ordered the mango shrimp salad, which was ample with very large perfectly chilled, deveined shrimp and avocado ....he ordered the Turkey sandwich with seasoned beer battered fries. There was a delightful aioli in the sandwich and a side of cranberry sauce. Our waiter/bartender was extremely attentive and our meals are delivered in under 10 minutes. Tucked away behind Foxy's in Rancho Mirage, we were both pleased with the clean, welcoming open moden interior. We opted for the Happy Hour seating and were provided with menus for that and for full dinners. I ordered the salmon and my friend the fish tacos from the Happy Hour Menu. His was ok, the fish still cold, but tasty. Mine was fabulous, perfectly cooked small portion of salmon with asparagus, carrots and bok choy and mashed potatoes with a delicious sauce. I ate every morsel. We split an ok caesar salad that thoughtfully came separated in two salad bowls. Service was gracious and attentive without being intrusive. Caesar salad was crisp and delicious, tender prime rib and perfectly cooked vegetables. My friends ordered off the main menu and loved their meals too. Chicken Alfredo and a gluten free eggplant lasagna. I tried the eggplant it was flavorful and delicious. We shared chocolate mousse and tiramisu for dessert. Yum!!! We found a table in the bar and ordered off the happy hour menu, which offers $2 off ALL alcohol, not just select items. My friend got the fish and chips (she loved it) and I tried the venison sliders with blue cheese and caramelized onions. Both dishes had ample portions. Sliders came with sweet potato and regular fries, which was a nice surprise. We shared the apple pie dessert, which felt more like a bread pudding and was absolutely delicious.
