Walking distance to the Miller Ave Sloat Garden Center. I purchase plants, soil, tools, and plant liquid misc/food and such. Staff are very friendly. Really like the atmosphere too. Each time I ask about a product, more specifically along wall of plant products, not once have one, two, or three staff on duty been able to answer questions regarding products. I realize this may be asking too much, to have knowledge on a wall of product, but there must be a way for mngmt. to help them learn enough to answer questions(Mngmt please write basic info about groups of product, figure out a system to help customers : ). I had tried something for indoor plants, used this for a month until almost empty, did not work as directed. Went in again to buy another product similar. I took a new bottle off shelf of the one I had been trying, to show two employees and ask questions as to what I might be doing incorrectly. I also brought to counter another similar product to buy. Staff was nice, although knew nothing pertaining to what either product does or how to use it possibly differently than what I was doing. They put both items next to each other and read the ingredients. Maybe I should have brought the empty container/receipt and ask for refund, not sure. Could be a brand issue but I needed help, so I bought similar and hope it works but would have appreciated insight/suggestions on the two product(the used one and the new one). I'm am amending the below review after the management team at Sloat Garden Center contacted me to make things right. I really appreciate that. I'm a small business owner also and know how hard it is to get employees to represent the values of the owner/management team. Everyone screws up. The question is how the response is handled. I appreciated their truly concerned follow ups. All we can do is try to learn from our mistakes and fix them. Thank you. Had the strangest and most unpleasant customer service experience there this morning. Would never go again. A few weeks ago I'd talked to someone name Sarah, apparently at a different Sloat location. We'd made all kinds of arrangements to have several Norfolk pines delivered to me and she was going to call me back. Never heard a word. So this morning I went to the MV location and went up to a short, rough looking middle aged woman and asked if there was a Sarah who worked here. "Who wants to know," she said gruffly, with a hard look. I was a bit taken aback by the hostile tone and just said, "I do." To which she said, "well, I have no idea who you are so why would I give you information about who works here?" Okay, wow. Pretty outrageous way to start. So I explained and she said, "well, there's no Sarah here." In other words, there wasn't even anyone there with that name that she was presumably protecting from me - a customer. Then she looked at me, annoyed that I was annoyed, and said, "so, what do you want?" So I gathered myself and figured I was here so let me try to put an order together. I explained I was looking for two good sized Norfolk Pines to plant in my front yard. She took me back to see them and I started asking question about best planting times, etc. Her tone had settled down by then but still, the vibe was, why are you bothering me? She then called out another guy, who instead of really answering my questions about the Norfolk Pines simply suggested I should get something else. So I just gave up and left. Wow! Way to go team in driving someone who would have spent a grand out of your business. For what? For asking if there was a Sarah here. Why would that woman give me so much trouble for asking about a person who doesn't even work there? Who knows...but you can kiss one customer goodbye. read more

I was passing by and have been thinking about fruit trees in my back yard. These folks were incredibly knowledgeable and helpful in so many ways. They steered me away from dumb decisions (apple varietals which produce mushy apples) and towards smart ones (trees like pears and a pluot) which are known to grow well in Mill Valley. They gave me a smoking hot discount on soil for my container garden (photos coming) and threw in some soil amendment for free! These folks are awesome. read more

I like Sloat Garden centers in the city, I think ( strangely) the Marina or Sloat Blvd being the nicest staff wise, while 3rd Ave ( Inner Richmond) has their days... In any case, was hunting down to find a bush called Smoke Tree in this awesome variety called Golden Spirit that has really bright lime green almost yellow leaves. So after few phone calls I was forwarded over to this location as they had few. I wanted to confirm that the leaves will stay this bright yellow throughout the season and not turn as they mature to a more dull/regular green color - well whom ever I spoke with kept interrupting me without letting me finish what I wanted to inquire about, as if talking to a mentally challenged 5 year old, and then started telling me in a very condescending tone how leaves change colors, they start green and then turn yellow and red in fall before they fall off.... ???!!! o_0 wow..... after that snooty little comment I had no desire to even try to confirm with this presumably knowledgeable person if the chlorophyll within this variety is structured in such a way to keep the leaves lime yellow, is it a naturally occurring mutation or what ever the story might be. Add to that the price tag of 60 bucks and a change for a single bush, and guess if I am gonna hike there and buy it? yeah..... good luck Sloat Garden, may you treat others the way you wanna be treated. read more

Mixed. Perennial plants are generally good, although you pay more for them (it's worth it for a healthy plant and a better variety of plant types.) vegetable starts are very poor. Purchased a tomato start labeled "early girl" this year when I didn't have time to do seeds and it turned out to be a "bush early girl." If Sloat had correctly labeled it, I wouldn't have bought, planted and tended it, as bush early girl flavor is inferior. (Other gardeners in the MV community plot also purchased bush early girl plants mislabeled as early girl.) Also bought Little Gem starts and two of the six immediately died. Go somewhere else if you're looking for vegetables. For the same prices, Green Jeans has healthier vegetable starts that are planted in bigger 6 pack cells. read more

Sloat's is great for me, a professional gardener, because they will do special orders and call me when they come in. The quality of their stock is excellent. I can phone a store to find if a particular plant is in stock. They will also do a quick stock check in the other 8 stores. Then they will hold it for me, deliver it to me or to the store closest to me. They have an excellent selection of indoor plants that have always satisfied my clients. Their pottery selection high quality, and will fit any architectural style and again, they happily do special orders. Sloats will do custom hanging baskets and pots and deliver them on short notice. Expert advice is available on the right plant for the right spot and what's wrong with sick plants. Sloat's has been an essential supplier for my landscaping company and a pleasure to do business with. read more

I hired Gloria Sanchez at Sloat Garden Design to help me with my front landscaping needs. She was nothing but professional, helpful and thoughtful about working with me. It was so easy. She came to my residence to meet with me and talk about the particulars. I had some vague ideas about the plants, but hadn't given much thought to a design. Gloria worked up her ideas to include a lovely pathway and rocks that absolutely exceeded my expectations. She also provided names of landscapers from whom I could obtain estimates to bring her design to life. I couldn't be happier with the results. I know it's part of a chain, but I can't help getting the neighborhood feeling here. sure, prices are a little steep, and perhaps selection isn't as hunormous as some nurseries out in sonoma. but this is where I can wander in with random diseased leaves from my garden, get sympathy, an accurate diagnosis, and walk out with an organic remedy. and a treat for the pugs. read more

The team at Sloat goes above and beyond. I am having a pest problem that is killing my 20+ year old ferns which dominate my yard. I called Sloat from work to get a diagnosis of the problem and within a couple of hours they were at my home to examine the ferns. They determined the pests which are causing the problem and we are aggressively treating. Just want to call out and thank Donna, Dan and Teddy. Great customer service and knowledge! read more

This location is the closest to my house, but I always end up going to the blithedale location instead. There's some weird energy here w/ the staff -- I think maybe there is a management issue and employees are unhappy? I don't know, but the staff isn't nearly as friendly or as helpful as the other location. Generally, I go to Sloat if I'm going to buy a transplant. Or if I need something right away and don't want to drive too far. Otherwise, I shop elsewhere. I was looking for amendments for my tomatoes and not only did sloat not have any of the items I was looking for, but no one even knew what I was talking about. Turns out, the itemsI was looking for are the hot new amendments in gardening - a simple internet search indicated that gardeners should know about these items. I went to GreenJeans and not only did the staff all know about the amendments, but they stocked all but one item and I had a long discussion with the owner about the science behind the amendments. (Check out my review of GreenJeans.) I do like that Sloat offers seminars. That's cool. read more

This place hosts a wide variety of indoor and outdoor plants. The flowering plants were my favorite. They have a good collection of planters and potting soil as well. The staff is courteous and helpful. Definitely a lot bigger than many other sloat garden centers I have visited. read more

Last night I released the cup of ladybugs I bought at Sloats to do battle with all the aphids spring has sprung. Usually when I buy ladybugs there are a bunch of dead ones, but these from Sloats were amazing. It stated on the carton there were 1500 ladybugs inside, and I swear there were 1500 live ones. They are still munching this morning and I'm thrilled to see the aphid banquet shriveling. This must be a very good time to use these little guys and I'm happy to report our local Sloats is the place to get them. read more

Honestly, I've never bought anything from Sloat but I worked in the plaza across from them. I had few interactions with them but all of them involved a very rude troll woman yelling at me about something our business had done to offend her. I'm not even saying her complaints weren't worth hearing, but I've rarely been spoken to in such a rude and degrading manor. She is genuinely the WORST and RUDEST person I've ever had the displeasure of interacting with. I have to imagine they keep her locked in the back to avoid scaring away the customers but they release her to intimidate people they feel need intimidating, i.e. me. Well, no such luck. I, like the U.S Government, do not negotiate with terrorists. read more
