Swung by to pick up some soil and seek some advice about repotting an olive tree. A brown haired woman was surprisingly rude to me *and* one of her colleagues ("I told you to sweep that area" condescendingly to the employee, and "Like I said: just use regular potting soil." to me). I asked if they had any 10/10/10 fertilizer and she said "we have 5/5/5 which is basically the same". I asked if she knew the difference, and she did not. (The ratio is the same, but 10/10/10 is definitionally twice as strong, so not a great suggestion really.) It's not the first time I've had a poor experience here. While in the area, we ducked in here to check out their selection of soils and veggie starts. We were so impressed with how many plants they had, and their plant delivery was literally coming off the truck as we wandered the lot. They have a huge variety of items from veggies, to ornamentals, indoor, outdoor, annuals and perennials. Additionally, they have a ton of pots and containers, ladybugs and praying mantis eggs, fertilizers and plant treatment, and lots more. Basically anything you might need whether you're a beginner gardener or a pro. I thought their prices were a little high, however their selection and quality matched their prices. Everything was well organized and easy to find. The only downside is the staff at the time (probably because we were there during delivery) were short with us both outside on the lot and inside at the registers. I've spent a decent amount of money at Sloat despite my green-thumb husband's insistence that the operation is "ridiculously overpriced for the quality they offer." But this location is near my kids' school, so it's convenient. This morning I went to buy a pot and dish for our fiddle leaf. The pot was quite heavy, so I brought in the dish and the sticker from the pot so I couldn't have to carry it in and then back out and into my car. The older man at the register asked that I bring in the pot because "it can be fishy" when they "cannot verify what a customer is actually buying". I invited him to come outside with me to see the exact pot I was trying to buy, and he wouldn't come see it. Instead he, in a scolding manner, told me to "bring the merchandise inside next time" so he can "verify" what I'm buying. Old dude was clearly insinuating I might be stealing. And lazy on top of that since he neither tried to see the pot himself and God forbid offer to help me. I told him I'd take my business elsewhere and left. I'm a 42 year old mother of two and an honest person. I will never set foot in this gross place again. Two stars only because they do have nice pots, however overpriced. Go to Flourish in Petaluma if you want to spend the cash! read more

Really enjoyed coming here. Wish they had bonsai but they have a MUCH better selection then SF has and quality is way better. Ambiance is as well. Only knocking off a star for the lack of bonsai. Social distancing enforced and staff are awesome here. read more

Beware of Assistant Manager "Mike." I just left this Sloat location after a verbal assault from Mike. Parking is right. I drive a two-door tiny car. Couched in a barrage of insults, Mike ordered me to get back in my car, move it three inches, and then wouldn't allow me to exit my vehicle. He said, "You park like a woman." Customers can take a toll on a person, but this guy was unhinged in a way that also felt unsafe. He said he had reprimanded 15 other people for the same thing "all morning." I get it. You don't like customers and people and feel empowered to use gendered insults. This nursery has the lowest star rating of all Sloat locations. If something happens 15 times in a single morning, is it the different people, or is Mike the standard variable? Does Mike yell at everyone, or does he single out women? read more

Extraordinary service at this place!! I am truly impressed by the super friendly staff and very generous policy at this place. I purchased a large indoor Kentia palm and somehow managed to kill it after 6 months. When I called the manager to ask how to take better care of the next time he offered to give me full credit for the plant so I could get a new one (270 USD). The staff also helped me with better guidelines on how to take care of it. I highly recommend you to shop here for your plants:) read more

The plants are healthy and vibrant. The staff is friendly and extremely knowledgeable. The parking lot is quite small, so get there early or you'll be jocking for a space or carting your purchases out to the street. Let me first say, I know nothing about plant care. However, I walked into Sloat with my heart set on getting a ficus plant for my apartment. Vicky and Mike were incredibly helpful. They helped me pick the right plant, showed me which items I needed (I wouldn't have thought to get a cork pad to put under the pot), and they walked me through plant watering schedules. Service was surprisingly bad. Perhaps the manager was having a bad day, to say she was "sour" fits well. I asked for help, no smile, kept turning away like she needed to be elsewhere. I felt like I was LUCKY to get her help. It was interesting, another customer thanked her for the help he'd gotten the last time he was there. I said, "I'm glad you're happy, her attitude isn't very nice, I don't like being treated like I'm lucky to get customer service." He said, doctors are like that, they know a lot yet can be a** h****. Well, if I have a surgeon slicing me open I'll care more about his knowledge than if I am in a PLANT STORE. I had just left Kentfield, Sloat, where Skyler was one of the best customer service people you could have representing your business, I was going to tell his boss, who was on the phone as I was leaving. read more

What a joke. I called to see if they had seed inoculant, the woman who answered didn't have any idea what I was referring to (that's OK with me, just ask someone who does) so she asked me to hold while she asked another person working there. She came back and told me that diatomaceous earth was an inoculant! Not even close, DE has absolutely nothing to do with inoculating seeds. I couldn't believe that I'd get such lousy advice from a garden store. So...I just went onto Amazon Prime and had some sent to me. Sad day when I can get much more accurate help from Amazon on garden matters than this sloppy outfit. read more

I arrived about 15 minutes before they were closing, so I was trying to hurry and pick a few succulents for my desk (which was hard because there was a great selection). When I was trying to choose a pot, I knocked over a plant and got soil all over the floor. At this point I was completely annoyed with myself, and would have understood if the employees were too. However, they were SO friendly and helpful. Even after I knocked the plant over they encouraged me to take my time and assured me it wasn't a big deal. Thank you, Sloat, I'll be back. read more

Of the Sloats I've been to (this, the other Mill Valley location and the one on Lincoln in San Rafael) THIS one is my favorite. I always find what I'm seeking here and usually end up bringing home something new and different as well. I haven't seen as much variety, different and new plants, etc. at either of the locations. The one on Lincoln I don't care for at all. I LIKE that the staff doesn't pester and try to "sell" you stuff. To me, being here is like being in a quiet park and most the time I want to be left alone. However, when I do need help I've never had any trouble finding a staff person. My all time favorite nursery in Marin would be Sunnyside in San Anselmo - if this Sloat doesn't have what you seek, definitely go there. read more

The Mill Valley location is under new management with a new and improved emphasis on customer service. If you haven't been back in several years I encourage you to give them another chance. The staff there is incredibly knowledgeable however, as everywhere, there will always be new seasonal employee's who are often just learning the ropes. They also have incredible seminars to take advantage of. I wouldn't shop anywhere else! read more

Wonderful experience here! I am a very inexperienced plant buyer and Vicki and Mike were so helpful. They made great recommendations on what I needed for my new indoor tree. They also had helpful tips for when I can replant the tree and how much water to give. I appreciate the staff's friendliness at Sloat and there was always someone around to offer help. read more

We love Sloat Garden Centers but had a very poor experience at the MV location. Tried to find shade plants that are deer resistant. Went through the entire staff to end up with a guy who did manage to find a list of deer resistant types but couldn't read it to see if the plants they stocked were on the list or not.. Hmmmmm. This fun excursion took about 40 minutes and we didn't end up getting any plants but some water plants that we found by accident. Won't be going back soon... read more

CORPORATE MENTALITY is, and has always been the problem here. Staff is often chosen fort what must be willingness to work cheaper, or desperate, since they, in general are not very well informed about plants and gardening. We had a recent problem that ILLUSTRATES the ignorance (maybe greed too) of the ownership. we returned a few plants to Slaot that had died in the pots. now supposedly we were told they give a GUARANTEE and "Happily return" defective items. They took them back and gave us a CREDIT which we immediately spent on new plants (no $ returned to us!). We did return some other plants 2 times....the next time we came in with a return the staff said the ownership said they would take no more returns. NOW if you advertise customer satisfaction, state you are happy to take returns, and then refuse to even take dead or dying plants back what kind of bullshit are you spewing? FURTHER, we never asked for MONEY back, just store credit to replace the dead and dying; in other words, replacement plants. And with Sloat's OUTRAGEOUSLY high prices they could certainly afford to give us new plants! The truly IGNORANT oversight on the part of the ownership was that one with a business sense would realize they should see if we were good customers. Well, we SPENT way way more then they credited us for - and just got more plants when we got a credit. In fact, i remember 2 times we were there and received a credit we used it right away, and spent a GOOD BIT ADDITIONAL! Sloat has a MONOPOLY in the Bay area, but Home Depot has great prices and a great return policy if a plant dies.Not sure about Lowe's, maybe it does too. And then there is Flora Grubb Nursery way out 3rd St, in SF, worth going to see, a large delightful place with a great coffee shop inside....lol, almost like going on a picnic, getting some plants also. they have tools, soils, amendments and gifts also, and clever plantings. read more

I've been getting my plants and soil from them for 3+ decades. The quality of what they sell is and knowledge of the staff are excellent. What they don't readily know they will find out for you. If your plant you got from them bites the dust they will replace it. The only reason I don't give them a 5th star is that I wish they were bigger, but we're lucky to have them at any size in this crazy expensive real estate market. I also like their selection of gloves, clippers and other garden products. It's much easier for me to "weed out" what I want to buy here than in big overwhelming places like Home Depot. And to top it off, they will carry it to your car for you, or deliver it if it's too big to bring in your car. read more

Steve, Manager at Miller Ave (MV) store, does not understand "customer service": I asked for help in selecting groundcover that is drought resistant, not highly flammable and not something deer will like ( which is what is needed in this entire area); told him I had a large hillside to cover ($$$$ in sales). I've tried really hard to like this nursery. They have an impressive selection of perennials and shrubs (though not much else). They're completely understaffed though which is enormously frustrating. Twice I've been here, walked around for 20 minutes, and not seen a single employee. The third time was yesterday where there was one poor kid who was the only one there (seemingly) and was totally frantic trying to help everyone. I highly recommend the other Sloat in Mill Valley for a helpful staff and equally good selection. read more

Over the years I have consistently got informed, helpful service yet today Donna Chapman, manager of the store gave over-the-top service, from finding me a scented plant for a very special birthday, a daphne + found one loaded with blossoms and wrapped it in red foil with a white ribbon, and tock it to my car. This is the second time in two months that the plants were dry, had lots of dead leaves and/or pest infested leaves and should not have been discarded. There is something wrong with this nursery that I have been using since it was Egger's. No more!! I will try other locations to see if the management and inventory is better. read more

Never again! I have tried to like this Sloat Garden Center, and for all my visits and money spent there, simply cannot. Latest experience: I arrive on a slow day, not at a busy time (five cars in the parking lot) to see if there are any vegetable plants around. Small selecton because it is late in planting season is understandable. I tried to ask no less than three sales associates if vegetables were any place else--to no avail. All three associates--who seemed to be the only ones there--were with other customers. Okay, they have priority, and I get that, so I hunted for an associate not engaging with another customer. No one was around. So, back to the associates helping other customers. I approached each of the three, waited politely for a break in the conversation with the other customer and said, "May I please ask you a quick question?" All the time checking it out with the customer and all three nodded or said yes. One clerk ignored me; one told me she was with another customer and would get to me later; the third told me to wait my turn. All three turned away from me and walked off. In one case, leaving their current customer behind. I eventually left, without plants and definitely, with the determination to find another nursery in Marin. Now, I don't like it when I finally get a sales associate to help me and someone comes over and wants lots of attention. But if another customer has a quick question, I'm glad to give them that few seconds to ask the question and get a response and/or have the associate call someone to help with the querying customer. I don't know what is going on at this location, but between the rude service and the prices, I'm never going back. There are other Sloat locations with kinder staff and other nurseries with better selection, prices and staff. read more

An employee named Theresa was extremely helpful and provided the best customer service I have ever had at Sloat. She helped me select a nice arrangement and then helped me add a few more plants. She couldn't have been nicer or more professional and I'm thrilled with the outcome. read more
