Every time I come to town I want to go to Sluggo's. So I finally got the chance to go. I have been looking on yelp to see what was most popular and found this pecan crusted seitan so I knew that's what I was going to have. As soon as I got there the lady said that that was her favorite, that just solidified my decision more. My mom ended up getting the sweet potato and spinach enchiladas. Everything looked great when it came out and we were both super excited to eat. And can I say this seitan was a vegetarian's comfort food dream I will definitely go back and get that before I try anything else on the menu because it was so good. Mom's enchiladas were good too but they were a little bland, which is why I'm only giving four stars. The seitan was definitely the star of the show. read more

Very interesting, casual, divey, neat little restaurant! It is so nice to have the option to go to a vegetarian restaurant, rather than order something vegetarian from an everyday restaurant. I wish my city had a place like this, although I think it would be more fitting to describe this more as a vegan restaurant. Order at the counter, and don't be shy. There's also no need to wear a fancy outfit. Go in jeans or sweats. I doubt anybody will care. The bf ordered the sweet chili Thai bowl with tofu. It was so refreshing and crisp. Although he thought it was going to be different, he was rather pleased. It had a nice ginger bite to it, without being overpowering. I went for the club deluxe, which was the winner. It gave us both a chance to go all out and have seitan, soy bacon, and tofurkey with tomatoes and avocado and all that other good stuff. I've made a dish with seitan before, but it was a disaster. I've only had him eat tofurkey in the form of hot dogs, so it was nice to be able to eat it as a sandwich. It was fabulous, except for after a while it got a little too salty. I ended up taking the 'meat' out and eating everything else. For my sides I got the curry lentil soup and a salad, both were nice. It looks like there is a Sluggo's in Pensacola. If you are vegan or vegetarian and traveling through Chattanooga, GO HERE. While many vegetarian restaurants seem to cater to some super-upscale gourmet diner that I don't connect with, Sluggo's specializes in vegan versions of foods you'll actually recognize, and basically everything on the menu is tasty. I am addicted to the Philly Seitan sandwich. That's right, a vegan "Philly cheesesteak!" My wife is addicted to the Pecan-dusted Seitan plate, which comes with garlic mashed potatoes and mushroom gravy. They change the side dishes daily. I've tried about 1/4 of the menu so far, in 8 or 10 visits, and I'm yet to find something I don't absolutely LOVE. The style is a sort of "dirtbag chic," which means the soda fountain is usually broken and you pay before they bring your food. Common in most urban areas, less common in the south. Admittedly, I kept not going to this place due to it's appearance from Cherokee Blvd. The building is ancient, and run down. However, I finally broke the seal and went in to check it out, and was pleasantly surprised. The seating isn't very comfortable, but the food is really good and well priced. I've had the walnut mushroom burger $5.25 twice now and it's awesome. Appears to be handmade, with lots of fresh ingredients, fresh made dressing, and a great bun. This place rocks. Sluggo's existence was a significant factor in our move to Chattanooga (seriously). As vegans, obviously my boyfriend and I love this place. But we've also taken visiting carnivores here, and they absolutely adored it. They still talk about it, months later. Essentially, this place is only incidentally vegan. The most notable thing about eating here is that they do a wide variety of "craving" food very, very well. The dishes are super flavorful and the portions are huge. If you didn't know ahead of time that you were eating vegan food, you would never guess it. Brunch rocks - think sweet'n'savory waffle sandwiches, plus great versions of all the traditional fare. For lunch/dinner they do awesome cheesy Mexican food, American stuff like burgers with fried pickles, or fusion fare like a pesto quesadilla. The "panhandle tofu" is just like fried catfish, with grits & delicious griddled cornbread on the side. This place proves that veggie food isn't always health food. If you're in the mood for something lighter, try one of their rice bowls or the caesar salad. You can also create a plate of sides, which you can make as light (steamed greens) or non-light (baked ziti) as you want. But if you're here, why not live it up with something fried or smothered in gravy? Keep in mind - this place is a diner. It smells like a diner. It's the cleanliness level of a diner. It's the healthiness level of a diner. If you're looking for super virtuous food, check out Cashew. But if you're looking for awesome "splurge" food, go to Sluggo's. It's the kind of food you would find at a greasy dive, except much more thoughtfully executed, with more complicated flavors and better ingredients. And since they have a wide variety of options done well, it's a crowd pleaser even if your crowd is in the mood for different types of food. All for a great price given the portion size you get. This was a pleasant surprise! We decided last minute to stop by this place and were not disappointed. We got the Pecan Dusted Seitan with mushroom gravy, collard greens, mashed potatoes and a salad and the BBQ Seitan Sandwich with a side of chili and a salad. The staff was super friendly and everything was AMAZING. The only good southern vegan food we found in the "South." For dessert we got the gluten-free peanut butter cup and the peanut butter pie. I was researching vegetarian restaurants in the Chattanooga area and this one came up as the top option on a list. After reading some reviews, we decided to give Sluggo's a go. When you come in, you have to go up to the counter and place your order, you'll be given a number after you'ved placed your order(if it's busy, it was not when we were there so this wasn't necessary). It is a hipster hang-out with a large photo collage on one wall but on some nights they have trivia and board game nights. When we came in, spaghetti with lentils was the day's special with a salad on the side. We both had this and it was really good! Since we won't get to come back there for awhile, I decided to order their famous Berliner sandwich to go for dinner later that night. It lives up to the hype for sure! However, a slight critique would be that the sauce on mine seemed to be a bit too salty but otherwise it was a very good sandwich. The Berliner is marinated seitan served on rye bread with sauer kraut, their Russian sauce and their vegan cheesy sauce. I will definitely have to get another one of these when we come back to Chattanooga and I do reccomend that if you're undecided that you try the Berliner. read more

This place just sort of screams "hole in the wall," but the food is absolutely delicious. My family and I stopped in on our way through at the suggestion of Yelp. We were surprised to find anything vegan/ vegetarian in an area generally assumed to be hard core southern, but whoa. My dad especially was highly impressed with the BBQ sandwich he had, so much so that he continually compares all other vegan restaurants with this one. The place was clean, service was quick and friendly (though a bit hands off), and the prices were extremely reasonable considering that we all left with full stomachs and leftovers to boot. I still can't believe that there is such incredible vegan food in Chattanooga, Tennessee! I totally thought I'd be stuck eating mediocre Chinese food but instead, I found myself gorging on huge plates of vegan sandwiches, pastas, and cake. Incredible! I typically like to try as many vegan restaurants as possible when I visit a city but I enjoyed my dinner here so much that I had to go back the next day for lunch. I also got another meal to go for dinner that night. Everything I had was good, but my favorite was definitely the reuben sandwich. Can't go wrong with kraut! I liked this place when I first came in. It seemed like a local hub and hang out spot. And the people were really nice. Unfortunately the food wasn't as good. See, the first strictly vegan food I ever had was delicious. The flavors were punchy and diverse. The food was fresh, original, and yet oddly familiar. I wished that lady could cater everything I went to. I could totally be a vegan then. Unfortunately, a lot of the vegan food, especially from vegan restaurants, have failed to live up to that first experience. And usually it's because they're trying to serve normal food, but with vegan ingredients. As far as I'm concerned, I'm never going to have a vegan burger as good as a regular burger. It's just not going to happen. And it doesn't need to. Burgers aren't the only good food in the world. Don't shape my expectations by telling me you're serving me "chicken" friend steak. Just give me something original and flavorful that is also vegan. It will probably be a better dish, and I just might consider being a vegan again. read more

I'm a mostly vegetarian, but not a vegan. That really colors this review, because Sluggo's is actually a vegan cafe, something that was not clear until we got there. Why does this matter? I personally like cheese & dairy products and have a strong dislike of the vegan substitutes for those types of items. If I had known this was a vegan restaurant, I wouldn't have come here in the first place. What really bothered me more than the vegan/vegetarian difference was that, although we specifically mentioned that there was a peanut allergy at our table and wanted no peanut products on any of our food, we received food that had peanuts on it. Not okay. Fortunately, we realized before our son ate those items, but then I spent the rest of the meal paranoid that I had failed to notice peanut products in any of the other food and that he might have a severe reaction as a result. While that didn't happen, I was surprised that a restaurant with such a strong commitment to specific food preferences failed when a severe allergy was mentioned. Pros: *Fairly fast *Some of the food was quite tasty *Convenient location if you're passing through town or visiting the aquarium Cons: *Obviously the peanut allergy thing and the vegan/vegetarian thing. I want to make it clear that we eat out reasonably often and have literally never had a problem with the peanut allergy thing before now. We always have an epipen with us, but this is the first time I've ever worried we'd need to use it. *I found most of the food to be rather bland and uninspired *In addition to a bar, the other beverages available were run-of-the-mill fountain drinks (disappointing!) Kid-friendly scale: Eh. Walking in, I thought it looked really kid-friendly. But I didn't feel like we were particularly welcome as a family, at least not by the other diners. It's got a kind of "dive bar" ambience that doesn't mix well with kids, to me. Vegetarian-friendly scale: Duh. Although if this were omnivore-friendly scale, I'd say not to bother taking a non-vegetarian friend here. Other notes: We were in town visiting the aquarium and it was an easy drive from there to Sluggo's and then back to the highway to head home to Nashville. By all of the amazing reviews, you'd think it was a bucket list type of restaurant, the kind you feel you have to get to at some point. Our clothes, hair, and now the car all smell like a diner. Unfortunately, we have a 7 hour drive ahead of us still and the smell is borderline unbearable. Our view from the window seat was of an abandoned motel and construction lot, although it was close to a cute spot. I'd say the location was fair. Lastly, almost every dish was soy based. Tofu or seitan mainly, no tempeh or abundant vegetables, however they were very easy to work with. Overall, I'd say if you live in the area & want some good vegan food, definitely check it out! If your passing through & have had epic vegan food (ie Wild Cow in Nashville) then I would say take advantage of the other cute parts of town and grab a bite at a different local restaurant. read more

Tipped off by the Yelp rating, we pulled into Sluggo's in the middle of a long road trip, and it was the best meal and one of the best experiences of the whole vacation. First off, the food. The portions were substantial, so don't take decisions about sides and appetizers lightly. And the quality was outstanding. Serious comfort food, sparing no calories, no flavors. The ingredients stood out though, not just creating a bland reconstruction of your favorite meat-centric meals, but crafting a hearty meal that showcased how damn good a lentil burger can be when combined with caramelized onions and rye bread. Every bite was excellent. Then there was our server, Billy, who guided us through the menu, but also gave us pointers on sight seeing in Chattanooga (and, yes, Rock City is irresistible no matter how kitsch-adverse), insight into booking your best flight and hotel deals, and generally left us with the impression we were picking up a conversation that we must have started weeks beforehand. Very grateful to have met him. Sluggo's is a standout, and at least half the reason we're formulating another trip to see what we may have missed in our brief trip through Chattanooga. read more

My wife and I are from California visiting family. We are vegan, and luckily our family was more than accommodating with our diet. We searched for stuff at Whole Foods, cause that's all we thought we had. Then we get this suggestion to go to Sluggo's. So happy we went(actually went back twice). Once for lunch and once for breakfast. I had the mushroom quesadillas, and for the breakfast I had the breakfast burrito. Both were very good. Once upon a time, UTC had Sluggos on campus about once a week and I would always choose its food over everything else. In the end, they are no longer on campus and I am sad the convenience of eating a Sweet Chili Thai Bowl is no longer made available. It's okay though, because I am so willing to drive the extra 5 minutes for this bowl of deliciousness. Right before the tunnel towards Red Bank, we have this rundown looking building which you may think something is inside. Well, you are right, because inside is this amazing vegetarian restaurant fit for kings. The decor inside is just as creative as it is outside. Filled with what looks like remnants of an old art gallery, Sluggos makes for the perfect grunge scene/cool hangout for a round of cheap beer and snacks. I once attended a garage punk concert in its own location, which so happened to be right next door, and decided to make a pitstop here once more. Sluggo's is by far one of my favorite restaurants in Chattanooga, TN! I've seriously eaten there at least 2 dozen times and never had a meal I didn't love. Now if you didn't read the restaurant's name closely you may have missed the emphasis on 'vegetarian' but do not let that scare you! I've taken several friends here, in particular the more opening minded ones, and while I know normally they are meat & potatoes kind of eaters they also found Sluggo's to be as delicious as I did even sans meat. If you're looking for a fantastic brunch spot Sluggo's is perfect for that too! Usually I'll see their brunch special(s) posted on their Facebook page and always, whether I can or not, feel pulled to go there right then. Speaking of specials they often have off-menu items that are written up on a whiteboard, and what I love about these and what it says about Sluggo's is that the items are so fresh! In fact you may miss out on an item because they get just enough ingredients to make so many of each item on the 'specials' board. So you might get there and see one crossed out or erased entirely if you're not fast enough! So whether you're looking for a nice spot to eat at alone and relax on a busy day, or if you have a group of friends looking for a healthier vegetarian/vegan friendly brunch location then Sluggo's should be your restaurant of choice! read more

If you are always struggling to find vegan food this place not only has "vegan" it has the kind of variety you don't find in most places. I'm gonna have to go back there many, many times if I want to try everything they have to offer. Me and my boyfriend bought three entrees: Pan Handler, Spinach and Sweet Potato Enchiladas, and the Curry Bowl. Then we had coffee and Banana Foster Cake for desert. All of it was off the chain! Im a vegan and he's generally a high class garbage disposal when it comes to food but even he was excited with the taste and variety- not just the amount he could shovel in. Affordable prices and "American" portion sizes equalled a great deal. We had lots of left overs even after eating our fill. This place is awesome! The main ingredient in most if their sandwiches is seitan. I had no idea what this is, and even after asking the waitress, I didn't really understand what I was eating, but in the end it didn't really matter because it was delicious. I got the Italian sub, and as a true meatball sub lover, the seitan was a great substitute. I would get this sub again, but there are so many sandwiches on the menu that I want to try, I probably wont be getting it again anytime soon, I will definitely be back to this place, and I am looking forward to it. read more

So I took my fiancee here for Valentines Day this year and she absolutely loved it! I was in Chattanooga for work so she drove up from Atlanta so we could spend the day together. I had tested it out the day before for dinner just to make sure that the food would be up to par seeing that the environment is very dive-ish/low key. Which is cool for an everyday occasion but for V-day I wasnt sure. Needless to say I was definitely impressed with the food I ordered. (I hate that it took me so long to write this because I have no idea what delicious dish I ordered!) The next night we thoroughly enjoyed our Valentines Day dinner and dessert. Once I again I cant remember what we had but it was great, so good that we went back again for lunch before our drive back to Atlanta the next day.
