Sly Fox was my definition of a great time! We ended up here after a concert and dim sum and had two drinks and a couple of green tea shots. The bartender Corey was super friendly and played a bunch of fun music requests which led to conversations with other guests. Their drinks are strong and affordable, which is the perfect combination for me. We had a few margaritas and they were well but I'm really not a tequila snob. I definitely bookmarked them so I can visit next time. I'm in the area and know I'll have a good drink and a good time. No pics just good vibes! read more

I've been past this a million times but never actually ordered a drink in here. It's an utter dive. Very Russian. No nonsense. All things I enjoy. Relatively cheap considering drink prices these days. You can get a well drink or beer for about $7 on non happy hour prices. It was insanely loud when I came in here the other weekend was the only downside and they have these weird black lights and mirrors on the ceiling to give it a club effect. But I feel like it's pretty chill if you show up earlier. Drinks are served in plastic cups. Bathrooms are down and around a corner from the Ukrainian restaurant. So you get to go on a little trip through the building. Drinks are cheap but it gives me very college kid vibes as well. And considering I'm pretty sure I went here on the weekend NYU wrapped up for the year I felt instant regret. Would possibly check it out again in the dead of summer while half the city is away. read more

After making a semi-spontaneous decision to spend the summer of 2011 in Ukraine, I knew I had to have "dosvidanya" drinks at a Ukrainian bar. (Thanks, Yelp, for turning me on to this place.) Karpaty Pub obviously filled that need. And it's in my favorite neighborhood. Okay, so East Village + Ukraine... ultimate win. AND they serve amazing Ukrainian food! (And if you've never had Ukrainian food, clearly you haven't lived...) Was it a sneak preview to my days in Ukraine? Not really, but it sure was fun. And I had a great discussion with the Russian bartender about how we were both scared to fly with Aeroflot (due to the fact that sometime in the early '90s, the pilot let his 15 year old son take over and... obviously, that did not end well). So the point of this review is that, one year later, I came back with the same group of friends. The bartender recognized my friend, and then she turned to me and said "How was flying with Aeroflot?? Did you go to Moscow?" I couldn't believe she remembered our conversation from over a year ago. I mean, this is New York City. Where no one knows your name. So that can only mean one thing: Karpaty Bar is my "Cheers." Because that's the kinda girl I am, and that's the kinda bar this is. read more

Wow this staff is an entire new level of rude. I came in at 6:20pm on Friday at 6/21/2019 and I was the second person in the bar. The bat tender, she took the man next to me drink order and I was clearly next and she decided to recount her entire drawer countless singles and then approach the guy next to me again and then look at me and say what do you need. At that point I said water. Her aura was dark and bothered. I stayed a few while I waited for my 10 co workers to meet me here and then a bar back screamed at us and told us to move because we were taking up too much room.. not sure what he is talking about. This place is a dump. It's dirty. It's loud. It's impossible to find seating. The bartenders can be incredibly rude. On fall weekends, it's full to the brim with idiotic NYU freshmen who have yet to accumulate any braincells. Every terrible review you've read here? They are probably 100% accurate. Sly Fox is a veritable garbage heap. It's also one of my favorite spots to get a cheap drink. Their specials are incredibly reasonable, with a beer and shot combo that won't lighten your wallet. This is a great place to start or end-- it's the perfect setting to get sloshed before heading to one of the more polished (and pricey) bars nearby or it's thee place to fully commit to the blackout you've been working on all night. All said, it's a pit. A fun, affordable pit, but a pit nonetheless. KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Where the heck you're going. This is a dive bar. Expect a dive bar. P.S. Being not much of a fan of most dives, this little bar is definitely not my first choice, but I love the East Village and the Taco place across the street is super convenient and cool too. The worst thing about coming here is the restroom in back which was beyond deplorable last time - water or piss everywhere, looked like it hadn't been cleaned ever. Completely disgusting. I'm not sure if the bar is in charge of this, however. The bartenders played good music, if you like 80s alternative-type stuff. There was no working jukebox though and no DJ. The bar is popular though with a lot of folks, and some good-looking young ppl come here. But somewhere to go if you like to keep it classy. read more

As far as dives go, it's about as spot on as you can get. Dark, cheap drinks, lots of diversity from old timers to NYU kids, and all the bells and whistles in between. Their seating arrangement is interesting given we live in a city where more humans = more revenue. But when you see the spacious seating that make up the banquettes along the perimeter of the interior, you'll wonder just who they built them for. Sumo wrestlers? The offensive linemen of the New York Jets? Whatever the rational, it's like sitting first class inside a legendary East Village watering hole. If you see one available, you best try and snag one. Sly Fox has great fun energy really good vibes and the people are pretty, buff, friendly, and chill. The bar is stocked with some cool ethnic drinks, food, and tunes, people break out into song and dance, and some older Ukrainian folks have their little corner too, while the younger people rock the place. The bartenders are professional, polite, watch for any troublemakers like hawks, and are protective of the ladies. read more

I like this place. We've come here a couple times. It's more of a place you pop into because you're losing your buzz and need a respite on the way too the next bar (Usually Big Bar) We often just find ourselves here. And, to be honest-- I'm not too mad about it. It's pure dive. It's cheap, the bartenders tend to be really cool and chill. I think once we came in with a beers and pizza in hand and the bartender was fine with it. We actually spent a portion of my 23rd birthday here too, and the bartender gave my group of five free shots. Amazing. It's not a bar I would go out of my way to head too, but I do get warm feelings when I pass by. The bathroom situation is definitely interesting, it's down a staircase, and in the basement of a neighboring building. It's kind of fun to travel down there, but fun in the way like -- "Ha I might get murdered down here one day." It's well lit, just kind of wtf. read more

Playing Connect Four with the bartender while enjoying cheap drinks makes for a memorable evening. We were drawn in by the outside sign advertising great specials. We sat down and struck up a conversation with the bartender, who asked if we wanted to challenge him at Connect Four. Why not?! It was slow here, but it was the end of a holiday weekend, so it was expected. The bathrooms are actually in another part of the building so it was a bit strange walking out of the backdoor of the bar, going through the building by other businesses, then heading to the basement. I'd definitely come back here. Seems like a chill place to hang for a bit. By the way, the bartender is pretty good at Connect Four, so brush up before you attempt the challenge. read more

I love this place! Okay, I know this is probably not the best place for everyone, but I absolutely love it here. I like to come here on Friday and Saturday nights because it tends to be less crowded than any other place in the area. The prices are pretty good for drinks. I love the music generally playing on the jukebox. It's a pretty great jukebox truly. Man this place is such a weird but cool dive. I love hiding with my friends in one of their booths where we can just talk and drink for a long long time. The bartender is pretty cool. The decor is a bit odd and there's mirrors on the ceilings. I love it all though. It's always a trip to come here and everyone I'm with always enjoys it. You'll see so many different types of people here. Oh and warning on the bathrooms, the first time I discovered that, wow that was a trip. The minute you pass through the doors you'll walk into a brightly lit hallway that's part of the Ukranian complex there. It just feels like you've entered into another world and then you'll have to carefully walk down this staircase to find the bathroom. I definitely will be coming back to this place always. This is an awesome, no frills dive bar. You can get cheap drinks and Ukrainian dishes. Ukrainian vodka and herring in white wine sauce are a nice combo to have here. The bartenders may appear moody at first, but they will warm up to you. read more

I arrived drunk, and vaguely remember leaving, so this review isn't going to be the greatest. What I recall is that the prices are rock bottom and fantastic; the blonde female bartender was super friendly, attentive and sweet; and the booths are a nice addition when you're with friends. But nothing really stood out. It's a nice little bar, but not something I'd go out of my way for. The bathroom is pretty trippy. You go through what I remember being an unmarked door at the back of the bar and enter into a brightly lit, open space connected to a community center...or something. Walk to the right and you'll find a somewhat long staircase leading to the bathrooms. A mother was leaving with her child, who I'm pretty sure was eying me with far too much judgement for being drunk. read more

If you want a $2 PBR, you'll hit this place up, but it's a $20 minimum charge for credit cards, and they have no idea what a Moscow Mule is. You will get what you're paying for here, but the regulars might keep you coming back. Well, what can I say. It's Karpaty. If you want dangerously young people, or are Ukranian, I highly suggest this place, in all seriousness. Right next door to the Ukranian house, which is a great venue for just about any raucous party or dance, the biggest thing about this place is: 2 dollar bud and bud light pints. All the time. At least when I went, which was VERY infrequent. Also, when you go downstairs to the bathroom, you'll probably run into some sort of mob or gang type shady guys and if you're drunk enough you'll spit what little you know of Ukranian or Russian and be thoroughly embarrassed and fearful of your life. read more

Let's face it. The number one attraction for this bar is their $4 PBR and a well shot ($5 for tequila). They execute this very well. Otherwise its a pretty standard bar in terms of selection and pricing. I've never had any terrible experiences at Sly Fox. Bartender Andre is always pleasant to talk to. I'm rather fond of the Sly Fox. It isn't anything other than what it claims to be. It's a Ukrainian dive bar. It's a bit worn around the edges. You get exactly what you pay for, which for 5 bucks a beer or we'll drink, isn't a lot extra. The service is gruff till they get to know you. It's a place to get drunk for reasonable prices and if you have your head screwed on right you'll have a great time. Be nice, tip the bartenders, and they'll be nice back. read more

If you're looking for a dive that isn't putting a dive bar facade, Sly Fox is your real neighborhood dive. In my opinion, these are the signs of a true dive: 1) No premium beer 2) Bar staff doesn't seem to care what they look like (or at least not care about being trendy) 3) They don't care who you are or what you look like 4) Many of the regulars look like they've got a story you don't want to know Sly Fox fills all 4 criteria, and that's not all: It's a great mix of people if you're into people watching. On a weekend night, you'll be sharing your drinks with a young, probably just of drinking age, college crowd crawling in for $2 PBRs in plastic cups along with some "interesting" looking locals perched at the bar like the guy wearing a comically fake looking toupee pouring water in his beer to always keep it looking full. Like the toupee guy at this bar, there are a lot of reasons to see this place half full of dive bar kitsch instead of half empty. read more

Make fun of Sly Fox all you want, but I'm a fan. Yes, they tape up paper printouts of the Ukrainian flag on the walls, yes the tables are sticky, yes the bouncers wear Adidas tracksuits. But seriously, where else in Manhattan can you get a shot of Jameson and a PBR for $5? Insanity. Also, the bartenders are courteous but not super chit-chatty, which in my eyes is a plus. It also doesn't hurt that this bar is right next to Veselka--the beau and I like to get crunk here and then go next door for some late-night pierogi and borscht. I've always called Karpaty Pub the Sly Fox, probably because at night the bright red neon sign in the window that reads "SLY FOX" is so much more obvious than the small white letters on an unlit awning that you're standing under. What's great about the Sly Fox is that it has the uncanny ability to slip under the radar of most weekend revelers in the East Village -- i.e. the out of towners and those sweet, young NYU things just learning how to drink -- which is why the Sly Fox is my go-to bar to escape from St. Marks Place whenever I find myself in the unfortunate situation of being in the area on a Friday or Saturday night. (Like Times Square, it's inevitable.) It's the perfect refuge: Moderately busy, but never crowded; well-poured drinks at a reasonable price point (for the 'hood); dark and insulated from the clamor of the outside world because the Sly Fox is set a few feet below street level. One wall is lined with a number of booths that are perfect for small groups; illustrations of scenes from fables or folk tales, in which the sly fox is a reoccurring character, hang on the walls. The one drawback to the Sly Fox is the restrooms. The bar is a part of the Ukrainian National Home and going to the bathroom is a journey. A back door leads into a harsh, fluorescently-lit corridor, then down a set of stairs, and down another institutional-looking hallway. From the restrooms you're so far away from the bar that you can't hear anything but silence. read more

ha, i've been here - but it's one of those places where you never catch the name. it's a total dive - really dark inside - and when i was there, i remember people dancing rather horribly to the loud music on the jukebox. i liked it there - i felt like i was no where near the loud and boisterous st. marks place. definitely a cool place to stop by for a drink! oh, and an added bonus, you can get the pierogies from the Ukrainian East Village restaurant while sitting in this delightful dive bar! read more

*Cheap *Friendly *Conveniently located Definitely a dive bar that is very enjoyable. They have drunks, a juke box, and lots of friendly people. Many Ukrainians and other eastern Europeans from the east village come here to swill beer and it has a pretty good vibe. I wouldn't come here to impress anybody, but if you are looking for a dive bar conveniently located near st marks that is insulated from the bullshit that st marks can generate, it is a good place to stop by. Despite being a dive, it doesn't look like a complete shithole inside. A friend of mine came into town once and I met up with him here because it is conveniently located next to Veselka, where I was getting food when he called me. We met up, got a drink, and ended up staying here for hours because we had so much fun talking to the bartendress and other patrons. read more

A little backstory: Leading up to our trip to NY, my friend had been talking about Yuengling beer and how she remembered it as being a really good domestic beer only found on the east coast. Naturally, as a beer lover, I was interested. Fresh off the plane from Portland and with a belly full of Ukrainian food, my friend and I were walking around looking for a place to go. "There is someplace we're supposed to be right now, we just need to figure it out," she says. Right then we walk by and I notice a chalkboard outside that said "$4 Yuengling." We knew at that point we needed to check it out. We were met with a polka rock band playing in a relatively small place and were instantly reminded of home. We had a couple pints of beer (as far as domestics go, Yuengling is pretty damn good), and headed out. It was only then that we noticed we were next door to where we had had dinner, and had only come across this place after walking around the block. How can you turn down Happy Hour... Every hour? The drinks are by far the cheapest in the East Village, and possibly in Manhattan. There are $2 PBRs, $4 shot and beer deals, $4 pints of Yuengling, and more. The place is actually a pretty decent dive as well. The place seems larger with its cool mirror ceiling and the classy booths in the back make you feel like you're on a roller coaster. I would warn that the bathroom is through the back door, to the right, across the hall, and all the way downstairs. It's a really weird trip to get there. read more
