Let me start off with the decor it's got a nice little comfy "dive in" feel .. I honestly was hoping for a little more seating seemed tight and the lay out was a little awkward.. We were a party of seven and had a tough time fitting all around the table, but the food made up for it! Now I was somewhat hesitant on how good it was going to taste ( my mom makes the best Mac and cheese but whose mom doesn't? Lol) especially with all the random add ins you could do but I went ahead and decided to build my own which included mozzarella and America cheese with chicken, basil and mushroom and it was delicious !! I love that they serve it to you in a stone fry pan great effect and the crunchy crust on top is my favorite !! S'mac is another restaurant that specializes in just one item: Macaroni & Cheese. Far from your standard homemade Kraft version, this restaurant offers gourmet flavors, and they even deliver! The space is small and you have to use good 'hovering' skills to grab a table when it opens up. The atmosphere is very casual, very easy going, and very yellow. Food comes in three sizes: nosh, major munch, and mongo, fast food style. I couldn't resist the Parisienne, which includes creamy brie, roasted figs, roasted shiitake mushrooms, and rosemary. I could have personally done without the figs, but otherwise I enjoyed the rich and creamy flavors. Of course, I like anything with mushroom... Clark enjoyed the Alpine, which features Gruyere and slab bacon. We were pleased with our experience there, and plan to take any true Mac & Cheese lovers in the future. read more

We ordered delivery from S'Mac on Monday. It took almost 1 hour for the food to be delivered to the apartment which was kind of annoying. other than that, i must comment on the packaging of the food. The mac & cheese came in trays inside pizza boxes, which i thought was a super cute idea, and the graphic/logo on the outside of the box is also super cute. mad props for that. In terms of the food, i think that build your own Mac & Cheese may be the best invention ever. We order ours with the 4 cheeses w/ Bacon bits and spinach and it was excellent. It hit the spot 100%, exactly what i wanted. Mac & Cheese can get way too salty and cheesy sometimes, but this wasn't the case at S'Mac, the flavor was just perfect, esp. after adding the spinach. The buffalo wing one was also very good. The price is fair, exactly what i expected and wanted. I'm not certain if I'm the best person to review this but I'm going to try it anyway. You see, I'm not necessarily fancied by macaroni and cheese but when it comes to finding a great place for good old comfort food, S'Mac is a great choice. Whether you prefer to eat-in or take-out, S'Mac has both a separate restaurant as well as take-out area if you don't feel like walking through the restaurant. I ordered the "All American Nosh." If I'm going to try to mac+cheese, I want it to be the old-fashioned way our mothers made it when we were younger. The lady at the register was quick to place my order. The meal was made in about 7 minutes. It was nicely presented to me in an old-fashioned cast iron skillet with the cheese bubbling inside. The strong combination of American and Cheddar cheeses fit perfectly and was sharp to taste. S'Mac has plenty of other choices, whether you're looking for very basic or very plentiful mac+cheese. If it's a cold winter day and you want some warm mac+cheese, I truly recommend S'Mac. But remember, if you're looking for other types of comfort food, I wouldn't recommend S'Mac as your best choice. read more

Unfortunately the prices do not match the portions. As a male who loves to eat, I HAVE to get the Major Munch of something with meat in it just to be full. I just want state that the food is amazing here. I am giving one star review because of the person today (Feb 5th, 2016; 10:34pm) who is answering the phone call was really rude while both of my friends called twice. We were waiting over 2 hours for 2 orders while one order came in. The lady on the phone first stated on the first call that it is on its way. After 10 to 15 minutes later we called again. She was rude stating that it was delivered to the wrong address and we have wait longer ( remind you that it's been over 2 hours). This persons needs to learn manners and customers service. Yum yum yum yummy! This place is amazingly good! If you are a mac n cheese lover (and who isn't?), then you must make a stop here! With all of the different varieties, it seems that almost anyone can be pleased with what S'Mac has to offer. I had the Alpine, combining cheese, pasta and cubed bacon which made my mouth feel like all it's dreams had come true. Seating is a bit hard to come by, I felt a bit guilty for hovering over a couple who had just finished up their meal and were letting the pasta settle before getting up. Oh well, I snagged us a table. The prices are great and service is quite fast. Maybe I'm a little bit biased. Maybe I should go back a few more times. Maybe it's not always like that. It just doesn't get any better than S'mac. I have to say, I absolutely LOVE macaroni and cheese. You know how most kids grow out of mac'n'cheese like they grow out of applesauce and Barney? I never did. I have always been obsessed with it. And so when one of my friends mentioned S'mac, I was there in ten minutes. Not only do I love every variation that they offer (Buffalo Chicken and Alpine are my favorites), S'mac has also inspired me in my own kitchen. I love to cook at home, and their menu is a good jumping-off point for me to begin to experiment with my own variations. Nothing I've made can hold a candle to theirs, but I think I'm getting close. The atmosphere is extremely laid-back, and it's always crowded (that's how you know it's good). Sometimes it's a little overwhelming, though, and I can't deal with it. I suggest going in the afternoon for a late lunch or an early dinner to avoid the chaos. This is definitely not a first-date spot, but it's so much fun if you're not counting calories and want some great food. The wine in plastic cups was exactly what I expected, too. Sorry to say it does not taste the same at all , the whole bottom of the mac and cheese on the inside was full of grease I couldn't even finish it . The service took FOREVER . It was date night, and I was really excited to try out this mac n'cheese place that my friend RAVED about. She's a food blogger, so I assumed that her rave review would warrent the best freakin' mac n'cheese of my life. Literally, I was expecting to have this mac in my thoughts for weeks. I wish I could say that happened...maybe it will be in my thoughts though as my tongue is burned (but, honestly, that's not even the worst part). Just the two of us were going in for date night and assumed we would be able to sit asap, so we go up the counter to order not knowing that you seat yourself. Meanwhile these two ladies that came in after us took the only table available. Great. The woman at the counter was extremely RUDE. Not even sure why/how she has a job. She just stared at us, expecting us to know the procedure even though it was our first time there. She was not personable at all, merely taking our order and ignoring us and the fact that there was no where to seat. We ordered the sampler platter, wanting to try each delicious-sounding combo. After 35 minutes of standing wait for seat, we finally have our chance to battle through the crowd. We seat ourselves, clean our own table, and realize that they have not yet started to make our food as we were not seated. 40 minutes and two complaints later we finally get our food. The simple mac and cheese was good, but not special. Some of the fancier attempts at mac and cheese actually made me feel sick. My boyfriend actually had to spit out the parisienne style. I have been coming to S'mac for years. They are great with allergies with Gluten Free, reduced lactose and dairy free options. There were some technical glitches with the kiosk ordering but the staff was very helpful as we tried to sort those out. It was not that busy so thankfully we did not have to wait long for our food. We both did build your own bowls. The nosh size is more than enough for 1 person, I had a minor food coma after. I ordered reduced lactose with parmesan and cheddar cheese. My mix ins were chicken, spinach and mushrooms, no complaint about any of those. With melted cheese and breadcrumbs on top, it is such a treat, especially for someone who typically has to shy away from Mac and Cheese due to my complicated relationship with dairy. My husband got the gluten free pasta and absolutely loved it as well. Although they basically only sell mac and cheese, there are so many options for what to order you never have to have the same thing twice. I had to powerwalk 40 min there to get S'Mac for lunch (I have a 30 min lunch break). I was hot, super sweaty and not very happy. As you can probably conclude, I had high expectations for S'mac, thinking "This better be worth it." It WAS good, probably the best mac n' cheese I've had. However, the website had said "fresh basil" (I had gotten the Napoletana) and since my mom grows basil, I know what fresh basil tastes like and that was definitely not fresh. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to go to S'Mac again and would definitely not go there during a lunch break. So... a friend of a friend raved about this place, so I was expecting to have my head blown off. I didn't. I ordered the all-american. It was okay... kind of good, but I definitely prefer my homemade mac and cheese. The flavoring was different for me. Maybe too sharp or something. And it was entirely too soupy/runny. I'm not sure how fair it is that I review this place since I don't really eat dairy and even more rarely eat mac and cheese. However, we had an amazing Groupon for two different Mongo sized mac n cheese with two drinks. Easily that total could've been $45 but was instead only $19. Three of us split two mongos, a beer, and a wine, and it was more than enough. We got the Cajun and the Masala and thought both were fairly tasty. Towards the end, we mixed the two and decided they blended well together. We sat at the tables in front of the window and enjoyed watching troves of people drool over our skillets. I suspect it's a common occurrence and believe our delightful smiles and innocent looking faces recruited more customers in the place. I mean, when we arrived we were the only ones; when we left, there was only one table free. Clearly, we're the draw (nevermind the 1300+ reviews this place has) . . . Best mac & cheese! This is no health food place so don't expect to feel light and airy when you come out of there. This place is no joke but well worth the calories. It's always busy but never too long of a wait for a table. I've never gotten one of the macs off the menu - only ever made up my own. My fave was figs and mushrooms. I think about it all the time. I recommend getting the larger portion and wrapping up the extras to take home. If you don't have time to wait for a table, you can go to the takeout counter next door and get it to go. Prices aren't bad and they have an OK selection of beer and wines. Love this place and there's sure to be some great people watching as well. read more

Yum yum! My pregnant friend and I (not sure why I needed to include that description) had a plan to eat here one Tuesday, and the pouring rain was not going to keep us away - and didn't! We arrived to a damp storefront, with a place for our dripping umbrellas. We chose to hold onto them, as a patron leaving was throwing a fuss about how her umbrella wasn't there anymore. Cue: the "errr" face and darting eyes, as we clutched our umbrellas that much closer and scoped out an empty table by the door. After taking in the rather small restaurant (very cramped - some would prefer "cozy"), we stared at the giant menu on the wall behind the tiny counter and pondered our options. There were many variations on the mac and cheese and all of them sounded absolutely delicious. If this place weren't so far from my UES abode, I probably would have tried all of them by now...but I settled for the four cheese - I didn't want to be too outrageous, just in case I was never able to make it back in, I didn't want an awkward experience just because I happened to pick a bad flavor combo on my first visit. Classic, four cheese macaroni and cheese - can't really mess that up. And they didn't. The dish delivered - and I couldn't even finish the whole thing! Which brings me to their size options, "Nosh" (small), "Major Munch" (medium) and "Mongo" (large). All of these options are served in these cute cast-iron dishes, that go straight from the oven to your table. There was also a smaller size, something like a snack size, but that was large enough itself for a one person meal. I ended up getting the Nosh, and there was a lot leftover! The flavor is just so robust that a small amount fills you up. They also had a large sampler type thing, where you could try all 12 styles. The shop itself is bright and inviting (orange decor, bright lighting), though small as I mentioned before. The employee at the counter was okay, she wasn't going out of her way to be friendly or helpful; she seemed more annoyed that we took our time going over the menu. All in all, would highly recommend to anyone enjoying the consumption of pasta, cheese, quality mix-ins or any combination of those three things. Yum, would return. read more

It's my personal belief that it is better to do one thing and do it right than to do a thousand things poorly. Which is why when I heard of S'mac I was super duper excited. I have a personal love for mac n' cheese, one of my college roomates made a mean ooey gooey version and I have been in love with the ultimate comfort food ever since. Needless to say when S'mac came into my radar I grabbed my two mac n' cheese aficionado friends and readied ourselves with stretchy pants for a night of comfort galore. We ordered 3 Noshes (their size menu is perfection for those who care n' share): the All-American (American and Cheddar), the 4 Cheese, and the Alpine (Swiss, Gruyere, and Bacon), Well, as to all people who get their hopes too high, I was sorely disappointed. The place was nice, almost made me feel like I was a little kid, and the service was good, but all three of us ended our meal with so-so feelings and an appetite for better mac n' cheese to salvage our ho hum meal. It is so unfair because I truly wanted to loveee this place, to buy t-shirts and write to friends and family about the place that serves only mac n' cheese and that is worth the trip, but sadly no bubble of comforting cheese and love encased my heart after this meal, only the sorrow of one's ultimate hopes dashed and smashed. Oh HELL yeah. This place is what comfort food is all about. I was working in NYC for about a month last year and I hit this place up once a week. And, since all I did was walk, I didn't feel bad about the heavy, heavy cheesiness and carbs...in fact, I found myself addicted to the Veggie S'mac. I'm a HUGE Mac 'n' Cheese fan, and i heard about this place from the cashier at the thrift store nearby ("The Cure"), who told me that this was the best place for gourmet Mac 'n' Cheese, and that i would probably love it... I eventually made it here, and i was in for a wonderful surprise, the menu was just amazing, the different options available was staggering and completely mouth-watering! It gets crowded, and we had to wait about 15 minutes for a table, but by then we had ordered and our Mac 'n' Cheese came out a short while after we had sat down, along with our plastic cups of wine (we were trying to play it fancy, the plastic cups take it down a notch, but really the whole experience is incredible). We ordered the MAJOR MUNCH size of the "Parisienne" and it was delicious! It had Brie, figs, shitake mushrooms, and rosemary, and was amazing, by far the best Mac 'n' Cheese i have ever had the pleasure of eating! Also, that size portion was huge, i had enough left over for a very decent lunch the next day (although i had to restrain myself from waking up and eating it at night, it was SO good i kept thinking about it). We also ordered the NOSH size of "Napoletana" and that was also very good, with that size being just perfect if you're hungry going in! I would go to this place once but probably not again. The place is too cramped to really enjoy the atmosphere. My favorites were the Cheeseburger and the Napoletana! The Cheeseburger was extra cheesy and tasted just like what it was called! ...how would i describe this? burger pasta?! The Napoletana was very interesting, the basil really overwhelmed the cheese and I never had tomato with my mac and cheese. That was quite a delight! My least favorite was All American, probably because I don't really like American cheese. For the Perisienne, the rosemary flavor was a bit too strong for me so it wasn't one of my favorites either. I had a lot of trouble using the plastic forks for these mini pasta dishes. If they're baked in, they should at least offer us metal spoons to scrape off the cheesy goodness. The sampler is like a special off to the side above the menu. Keep a look out! I'm glad we didn't order just one flavor dish. I would have wanted to try more flavors and probably would have bought more than one dish LOL. that would have been horrible because these are really really really filling. read more

I really miss eating at S'MAC! Too bad I had to graduate from NYU ;( . The concept is AWESOME and the dishes are all AMAZING. The food is always served hot in a skillet and there is even Tabasco sauce at each table to add some pop. My favorite is the Buffalo Chicken dish :D YUMMY. If you're ever visiting the East Village and want to try something different, S'MAC is an establishment you MUST visit. S'MAC also offers delivery and they're a great choice for catering events (but you need to call hours in advance). Want to eat your S'MAC at home or in your dorm? NO PROBLEM, there's a location 2 stores down from the main store that is specifically for take-out. The only negative is the lack of seating. This location is very tiny and crowded. It's often difficult to get a table and you need to be proactive! It's best to reserve a seat before ordering your food. The last thing you need is to be stuck with a hot skillet and no table to sit down at so you can enjoy your S'MAC meal. I'd give S'MAC 5 stars if the location had more seating. read more

Perfect place for a cheese-a-holic. This cheese haven was stop #1 for an impromptu food tour that a few friends and I embarked on in early November. The four of us split the sampler. You get a few forkfuls of 8 different varieties of their ooey gooey cheese-covered-carb offerings. The cast iron skillet is thrown under the broiler so you get a really nice slightly burnt cheesy crust on the top. They were all solid mac n' cheeses. Our favorites were the caprese, cajun, and 4-cheese. Our least favorite was surprisingly the one we looked forward to the most, the persienne. It was just didn't have the flavor melting harmony that the others did. The service was slow since the poor girl working was working here AND the take-out location next door. I would probably come back if I was in the neighborhood but probably wouldn't go much out of the way to return. If I lived closer, I could see myself ordering take-out or ordering as a side for a gathering since everyone loves mac n' cheese and this gives a little play and imagination to the childhood favorite.
