Stumbled across this great food truck when riding around San Antonio with my sister. The food truck is in an area with a lot of murals and while walking around taking pictures one of the guys got our attention to come and try the food. We were both very pleased. Didn't get the guys name taking the order but he was extremely nice and welcoming. Food was fresh and quick and delicious. This food truck is a gem, especially if you are looking for some fantastic food after a late night out. While the service was a bit slow, it was completely understandable since it was just one person handling everything. The food was definitely worth the wait. I couldn't believe I finished the whole plate--it was that good! ​The Mango Habanero loaded fries were a standout. It was a busy night when we decided to try this place for the first time. The line took long, BUT I gotta say I was impressed cuz there was ONE guy making all the orders by himself! Stuff was running out by the time we got there, but the food was worth it! The chicken burgers and fries were delish and such big portions! We're definitely coming back to try the other burgers! Yum. Chicken sandwiches abound. Sweet and savory versions. We went with a 'simple' one since it was our first time. Gigantic fried chicken breast (seriously could feed 2 people; do they serve the food in a to-go box on purpose, knowing you're taking some home?), lettuce, pickles, ranch dressing. So flavorful. The one I wanted to try had jam and candied jalapeños. Also, no peppers today. Today (Monday), all sandwiches were $10 and included fries. The fries are a trip: salt, pepper and sugar-seasoned. Happy one year anniversary to Smack's chicken shack Celebrated the new year with a fabulous family meal at the one year anniversary event of Smack's Chicken Shack. I was blessed with awesome company and delicious food! What can I say that you probably haven't already heard of or know for yourself about this place? I mean, wow! This sandwich is huge in size and flavor (Nashville Hot). A few other choices were Buffalo, Classic, and a PB&J! I loved how moist the chicken was but secretly obsessed with how soft the bread was And man, with your choice of Sugar or S&P fries (Sugar are the way to go) all for $12, it's a sold value But talking about Smack's without mentioning the decor would be just wrong. The vibe of this whole spot is most certainly a nostalgic, hip-hop infused landscape of art, collectibles and trinkets...and I loved every single choice. Their back area is a great spot to kick it and snap some pics of some dope art too. But as you drive down Hildebrand, you'll most certainly catch the amazing murals outside on their front entrance. DMX, Biggie, Nas, Pun, Em...one of the dippers murals in the city. @smackschickenshack is without a doubt in the conversation of San Antonio's King of the Chicken Sando but the only reason I didn't give the 5th star was the lack of communication regarding our wait time for food (hard with kids) and cleanliness in the dining room at the time we were eating. I know I already have a review for this place, but that was for the food truck. I finally had the opportunity to visit the new physical restaurant, and boy! It is beautiful! If you live in San Antonio and have not visited this place, you are missing out on one of life's pleasures. The menu is unique and offers a wide range of chicken sandwiches, which I may add are humongous! You definitely get your money's work of food. I've never had the wings but decided to get the ones with peanut butter drizzled on them. They are so good. I highly recommend trying them. The owner is a genuine sweetheart and always has the attitude that your business is valued. I have read some of the reviews, and yes, it's not gonna be everyone's cup of tea. Some ppl prefer Chick-fil-a, which I ate once and wanted to cut my tongue out tasting that food it was so bland. But for those of us who love this place and its unique foods- it is a cult classic. Nestled into a little development on Lamar St, it's kind of hard to find and you'd miss it if you thought it was in the building there between all the bars, but it's tucked in the parking lot and easily missed. You'll be glad you found it! There's a nice little outdoor eating area with picnic tables and mood lighting. It's a small operation. Just the owner and one employee, as far as I can tell. Opening early afternoon, they sell out of chicken almost every day. Friendly staff, but they have their moody days too! Especially in the hot summer. Very interesting and creative menu! I enjoy trying out everything. They have special limited run sandwiches, like a hot Nashville chicken breast on a blueberry cinnamon roll. Everything is delicious. My favorite is the PB&J. A nice mix of sweet and savory, and the warm peanut butter gives it almost an asian peanut oil flavor. My girlfriend loves the lemon pepper sandwich and gets it every time. Have followed Smack's Chicken since they first started doing pop ups at local markets & fairs. They eventually got a food truck and super happy to see they now have opened up a brick & mortar location. This is the epitome of hard work & determination. Inside, you feel like you're walking into a nostalgic 80's era with walls filled with packaged toys & vintage items, beautifully spray painted & designed walls and plenty of ample seating for those who want to socially distance. So. First off. I wanted to love this place but to be honest at $13 a pop for a chicken sandwich I'm on the fence. I had the Korean and it was ok. Came with sauce and broccoli slaw. It was ok. The chicken was outstanding and maybe I ordered wrong. For $13 you get a fairly big sandwich and handful of hand it fries. Had the Thai chicken sandwich and loaded french fries basket. I felt it was a little expensive for the relative quality. The Thai sandwich had a cheese sauce and a sweet Thai chili sauce. The combination of flavors was more of a conflict than harmonized yumminess. The same flavors converged in the loaded french fries. The plain fries that came with the sandwich and had simply season salt were better in my opinion. The loaded fries and the sandwich/fries was $27. I felt the prices were not well published and the guy taking the orders on his phone could have been making up the priced for all I know. *EXPERIENCE DURING COVID-19* Happy national fried chicken day aka. perfect day to write a review of one of my favorite fried chicken sando spots in The Alamo city! Smack's Chicken Shack started over a year ago with a small table outside Brick at Blue Star. Their quality in fried chicken sandos hasn't changed, but their menu has definitely expanded. The esposo and I visited their new food truck location in the St. Mary's strip this past weekend, and I am so glad we did. We arrived to the food truck at exactly 1:15pm (15min after they opened) and they already had an hour wait due to all the phone orders. One of the guys from their team suggested to try again for dinner time (5pm-ish) because it usually slows down by then. We don't live too far from the area, so decided to take his advice and come back to a later time. During our second attempt, they wait time was no more than 15min. After looking at their Instagram, the esposo order their HoodRat Sando and I went for their classic Nashville Hot Chicken Sando. For those of you who don't know, the hoodrat sando is a giant fried chicken sandwich with queso and hot cheetos. Even though the hoodrat looked so much better, the Nashville was ten times more delicious! Their Nashville Hot Chicken is cooked to perfection and isn't too oily like other sandwiches. Both sandwiches came with a side of fries, which has sugar and something else. The fries were equally delicious and cooked to perfection. Wanting to try venue for awhile now and finally got a chance to do it. I ordered the Lemon Pepper Chicken sandwich with their fries. The sandwich was the bomb and really filled me up. I had one around 1:30p and wasn't hungry the rest of the day with an exception of having fruits that evening. Their fries is tasty but after a bit, I think I started tasting some sort of sugar. I thought it was just sea salt but it has some sort of sugary sweet to it. I think next time, I will ask for no sweets on my fries. Overall, I like this place. Pros: Delicious and unique Sandwiches. Visited the shack near Hopscotch. Limited outdoor seating. Chicken sandwich was really good. Large breast, light and flavorful coating, moist and tender. Hot flavor, but just right with a soft bun. Comes with fries that have a sweetness to them. If you order the fries as a separate entree plate, they come with the chicken cut into bite sized pieces - try them with the cheese sauce and thai chili sauce. We recommend giving them a try. As of the date we visited, the gift shop inside Hopscotch validates parking if you use the Travis garage (super close to the Shack!). I recommend brining your own drink. Want a soda? The Smackerel Nashville Hot Chicken is mind blowing! Simple, spicy, and succulent...this is what chicken sandwich dreams are made of! I usually find them pop up in Blue Star outside of The Brick on the weekends. Come early or these bad boys will sell out! I have also tried the lemon pepper sandwich and PBJ styles, too. They all have that homemade feel that you can't get anywhere else. The staff is always friendly and open to feedback. Wow. Just .... wow. Love any kind of chicken sandwich, so I was already ready for a good time. And we'd seen a segment about this place on KSAT, and made plans. Took a little longer, because they had to revert back to a food truck, but we got there today. Only regret? Didn't get there sooner than today. Our order, with description, is pictured below. I had the loaded version, my wife the sandwich. She would have preferred the loaded fry version as well, but signals got crossed. That being said, she loved the sandwich, and felt the sugar fries "made sense," flavour-wise, with it. I have no culinary training like her, l just know what I like - and the cheese sauce with the sweet Thai chili sauce was terrific. (A suggestion: if the sauce was more like queso? Again - no training on *my* part, but maybe something to experiment with.) But the flavours were great, the chicken was breaded nicely, and well-seasoned. Everything was just spectacular. And a separate paragraph, just for portion size..... Look, we all know the phrase "food truck prices," or at least you account for that when you hit one. Not here, man. Look at my picture - those are normal clamshells, and they were *jammed*. Neither of us could finish what we were given, and we hadn't eaten all day. Definite value-for-money. And I said 'they' and 'this place' above - it's one dude right now, making this happen and making it work. Got to talk to Chef Keenen a bit, before and after, and he's an impressive person. It's very clear he's passionate about what he does, and has a clear vision of how he wants it to go. Smack's has gone back to truck form, as getting enough people to follow that vision in a brick-and-mortar in these times is a lot harder to maintain, but I have little doubt he will succeed and build up from here. I realize I'm fangirl-ing, but he's a superstar, and people should not only buy his products, but look to back him financially. The definition of tender and juicy. Like serious serious juicy and tenderness! My husband and I ordered the BBQ chicken sandwich with Mac and cheese! We were not disappointed! This was unlike any other chicken sandwich I've eaten and I've eaten a lot of chicken sandwiches because I can't eat red meat. I had no idea pop ups were such a thing in SA. I found a few spots on social media, Smackerel being one of them, that rove around the city and open when other local businesses will let them utilize their kitchen or set up shop in their space. I think it speaks volumes about the chefs and ownership behind businesses like Smackerel that manage to make such connections in the community with their passion projects. Smackerel was at Sangria on the Burg on a Monday, and even coming by a half hour or so after opening, the space was packed. The menu, though limited, still made for difficult choices- ultimately opted for the Nashville hot with a side of mac and cheese, and a cocktail from SOTB's bar menu. The sandwiches are definitely worth the hype, boasting a huge chunk of chicken breast, with a thin seasoned crust, cooked thoroughly but still juicy, nestled in a bun that was over buttery but held up through consumption. The seasoning blend used on the Nashville had depth and a good but not overwhelming heat. The mac I'd skip on in the future, in addition to their fries, which are seasoned with sugar- maybe a good contrast for the spice of the Nashville but not a flavor profile I enjoy. I'd try the Lemon Pepper if I caught them again, but here's hoping they eventually get their own space! read more

I wasn't the least bit impressed by the service nor the food. To begin they were out of wings when we went, but in explaining that to us, the pleasant young lady said that it would take 30 minutes to get them. So, they weren't really out? I'm still scratching my head about that one. As we waited for our Nashville Hot and Buffalo chicken sandwiches, I watched an employee comb his fingers through his hands no less than 15 times. After the 3rd time, I started cringing because he was carrying people's orders, which were in styrofoam containers, to them with these unwashed hands. In addition to grooming himself, he was wiping tables clean with a rag that I never saw him take anywhere other than the countertop it sat on in between wipe downs. He never rinsed it out, but it didn't matter. He was going from cleaning to serving food once again. When we saw him fix a trashcan liner, we got up to ask his co-worker to tell him he needed to wash his hands. It looked like he did, but it didn't matter because he went right back to running his fingers through his hair. Normally, I'm the one to ask for a refund and walk out, but I tried to grin and bear it for my husband. We received our meals, sanitized our hands after touching the styrofoam container and started eating. My husband's sandwich was stone cold. No surprise, though, as we saw 4 other customers walk their incorrect orders back up to the counter to be fixed. My buffalo sandwich was more coleslaw and bun than chicken. What measly chicken there was was drenched in Frank's Red hot. Something any of us can do at home. I would've been more impressed if the chicken was seasoned and the buffalo sauce was homemade. Alas, it didn't matter because it was a skimpy, sad piece of yardbird anyway. The fries were good, not hot, but seasoned well. It all came to a screeching halt when my husband turned the cole slaw container (which he'd scooped a forkful out of already) and saw a suspicious-looking hair on the side. I nearly vomited at the sight of it. I don't know what it was or where it came from, but I know it didn't come from us. We won't be back. I can't take a restaurant that doesn't observe the basic fundamentals of sanitation, especially during a pandemic. read more

The sandwiches are BIG, like get ready to hear people say "Oh wow!" or "I could never eat all this!" when they get theirs! The flavors are on point! The Buffalo sauce is perfect, IMO. "Hey, you sexy thang," is what I sang internally to my Katsu Chicken Sandwich from the pop-up restaurant of Smackerel. Pop-up restaurant meaning that they are nomad of cooking in the San Antonio area. They do not serve out of a dedicated kitchen on wheels or in a restaurant, but they adapt to each space that they are invited to cook and serve out of. For instance, I dined with them in Shotgun House Coffee Roasters off of Buena Vista. How did I find out they'd be there you ask? Their social media presence, and I wasn't even following them! Shotgun House mentioned on their Instagram page that Smackerel would be serving out of their space on a Sunday with a link to Smackerel's. If those pictures of their food doesn't get you drooling I don't know what will. Their menu varies depending on what supplies they have on hand to bring to the pop-up location, but they are all variations on the beautiful fried chicken sandwich. That Sunday I went they had Lemon Pepper, Katsu, Chicken Cordon Bleu, Donut, and *drumroll* Golden Grahams (yes, the cereal). You order and pay at the pop-up vs. at the register of wherever the space is being hosted out of, and the folks their are real nice. Polite, friendly, and seem like a bunch of good people. Each sandwich is made fresh to order so the fried chicken comes out the way it is supposed to: hot, crispy, and delicious. The Katsu was the bomb. Spicy mayo, big ole piece of crispy chicken, and a nice cabbage coleslaw to cool the heat and provide some different delicious flavors. 10/10 would get again. Next level chicken would be if the bun was slightly toasted though. Mind would be blown. Smackerel doesn't have brick and mortar roots yet, but I sure hope they are on a track to get them one. read more

The bf and I wanted to try something different since all of our usual places are closed on Monday. We decided to give Smack's a shot. They were out of a few things on the menu and couldn't make some things, like wings, the big burger, and two chicken sandwiches. Be advised that the majority of their menu is spicy or with some zing, so delicate palates beware! I can't handle spicy myself, so I opted for the #3 which had lettuce, tomato, onion, and Smacksauce. The sandwich itself is two meals on it's own. The chicken breast was thick and outside crispy. Might have been fried a little too long, but I like it like that so no complaints here! The boyfriend got the #2 Lemon Pepper and it also was really good! The fries were fresh and survived the ride home, not succumbing to mushiness, but we could not eat them. We had no idea that the fries would be sweet and covered in sugar :( I wish there was a sign indicating sweet fries just so we weren't surprised. They were good, but just not our thing. Generous portions (huge! And we arrived extremely hungry) Food tasted good. Cons: the employee was texting on his phone a great deal while there were people waiting for orders. He lacked customer service; answering questions about the menu items in a manner which was both condescending and not at all helpful. For example; I asked what the sweet chili Thai sauce was and his smug response: it's a sweet chili sauce from Thailand. Perhaps if he had followed his initial response with an actual helpful answer, his remark would have been appreciated as merely a poor attempt at humor. Looked on yelp to decide and gave my daughter the choice between tacos and chicken sandwiches. Chicken won and we gave Smacks a try. The pictures looked good and the combinations were not anything I would come up with if I was making a sandwich, so I was intrigued. The wife got the smacks, daughter got the buffalo no slaw and I tried the peach. I probably should have picked something else since we were eating in the car on the way home at night. It was really messy because of the ingredients or the amount used. Overall the sandwich was good. They are really big and the fries that comes with it have a great taste. The chicken itself tasted plain but it's everything that went on it that shines. The pickled candy jalapeños was probably my favorite part, nice heat and flavor. For $13 a sandwich with fries may seem steep but with the current prices and the size of what you get it was a steel. On the way down to San Antonio we stopped at Buc-ee's and I got the three meat sandwich for 13.99. Smacks chicken sandwiches dwarfed that overpriced sandwich and you get fries. Daughter eat all of hers and the wife picked at hers since she was driving. It would have been better if we ate there. Instead of the car but we were in a rush to get back home. But that was my fault because I didn't want something we could get at home, I love trying new places. Talked with the guy running the shack and he filled me in on the story of how it started. Explain there use to be a brick and mortar and what happened. So if you look at the pictures it is just the small trailer(hard to see at night plus the trees have grown hiding the sign on the shack. They don't take credit cards, just cash, Venmo and cash app. Spent a total of $40 on these three massive sandwiches. If I come back to San Antonio I will definitely give them another try. read more

We decided to stop by after wanting to try this place for awhile, and it did not disappoint! The outdoor seating was very nice and there was a lot of space. This location is surrounded by bars, but the one right next to it had open mic comedy night. We ordered the BBQ Mac sandwich, enjoyed a show with it and it was exactly what we wanted. A chicken sandwich the size of both of our heads! Absolutely booming with flavor, the pickles that were used were absolutely amazing. It was filling, and the best part is it fed us both and we had some leftovers to bring home. We came later in the night and there was a man working by himself, he made himself familiar with all his customers, taking the time to chat with them, and ask how we heard about this spot. I love the amazing flavor the chicken and breading have, the chicken is so juicy. The filets are also enormous. They are easily larger than an adult hand. I tried the BBQ mac sandwich and I loved the flavor. The fries are also ample and very tasty. I will definitely go back to try their wings. read more

*3 1/2 STARS - Order: Nashville hot sandwich; Buffalo chicken loaded fries; Cheesy Thai loaded fries. The Nashville hot was not at all spicy, maybe they got the order wrong because there was literally no sauce or spice on it - except for the cream sauce. Buffalo chicken loaded fries were pretty good. Cheesy Thai fries were just disappointing, cheese sauce & then sweet chili sauce does not seem "Thai" to me. Would be much better with a curry sauce. What saves everything I think are the fries - some of the best I have ever had. Decor is 80's retro-cool with a selection of movies on VHS available. Service was good - friendly and responsive to requests. I might go again to try other options, but I won't go out of my way to do so. read more
