At the end of 2023 my favorite place for carnitas, Carnitas Lonja, closed down for good leaving me without a place to go for carnitas. But I've read reviews about Carnitas Don Raul and have been planning to come here and finally made it. It was Sunday and the place was packed and finding a parking spot was a small pain but I managed to find one. A huge line was forming and I looked at the prices on the menu ahead. Carnitas tacos are $8 a piece. I also wanted an agua fresca. But by the time I got to the lady at the counter I ordered a half pound of lean carnitas that came with 5 corn tortillas and a strawberry horchata and it was far cheaper. They don't have pico de gallo, just onions and cilantro and 2 different salsas available at the other side of the restaurant. I enjoyed the horchata and minutes later my order was ready and the carnitas were made how I liked them but I saw a tiny bit of fat. The corn tortillas were big enough and strong enough to hold an adequate amount of filling and salsa without breaking so a 2nd tortilla was not necessary at all. This is my new favorite place to go to for Michoacan style carnitas. read more

If you are looking for a carnitas (pork) restaurant, this is it! My husband isn't usually a pork eater, so for him to say the flavor was good and that he'd come back says a lot. I ordered the torta de carnitas with avocado and cheese all I can say is 'yummm.' The portions are very generous; I only ate half and was completely full. My husband got the gringa, which was also a great portion size. The restaurant is very clean and the service is quick, even when they're busy. However, the one major downside is that they do not have a changing table in the restroom. I had to go out to the car to change my baby, which was a huge inconvenience. This was my first visit to Carnitas Don Raul and I was so impressed. Let's start with the food. Everything is so delicious. The meat is so tender, and the portions are very generous. They are well staffed and the employees keep the line moving and the food and drinks flowing. They have delicious carnitas in every cut of the pig you can imagine. I opted for the pork belly and the ribs area. I was so full after my taco and quesadilla I thought I was going to bust. The staff is friendly and will explain everything to you when you are at the counter. They also have yummy aqua frescas as well as other drinks. They used to have pepino (cucumber and limon) which i loved. This time they had Hibiscus which was surprisingly tasty. They have a salsa bar with pickled onions, cilantro, hot salsa and avocado based salsa. So good. There is plenty of room to sit and enjoy but come earlier so you can get your pick of the pork. New location means time for a new review! Yes, you heard that right! Carnitas Don Raul has a new location and you have to check it out. This amazing business recently made the move from a food truck to a brick and mortar, and I couldn't be happier for them. Carnitas Don Raul has been serving the most delicious carnitas in the city for the last 5 years. Their new location is just across from the San Antonio Museum of Art with plenty of parking around the area. They are still serving their delicious carnita classic, with some new additions like the gringas (quesadillas with cheese and carnitas). They now have a license to sell alcohol, and serve a wide range of beer, tequila and mezcal. In case you've never been here before I highly recommend you to watch their episode on Netflix's docu-series The Taco Chronicles, in which Carnitas Don Raul was highlighted. After watching it you will have a higher appreciation of their craft and what they are serving, My go-to order is always de taco a la moreliana using maciza. I also recommend their classic quesadilla with carnitas. I promise you've never had anything like that at any other restaurant before! We follow this restaurant on Instagram and saw that they were offering flautas. We had eaten here before and loved all their carnitas. We thought that they closed at 8:00 but they close at 7:00. We got there at 6:40 and thought they were not going to let us in but they welcomed us in and let us order. We ordered the carnitas flautas and guacamole and totopos (chips). It's the best guacamole I've ever tasted and the chips were done perfectly. While we waited for our flautas the music was good and the ambiance was simple and clean. There were so many different flavors that explode in your mouth when you take that first bite of the torta and the meat was seasoned perfectly, and had the perfect amount of flavor not too salty. First experience here. I went around 3pm and there weren't too many people inside. I ordered a cucumber lime agua Fresca which was so fresh and delicious. You can tell it's made in house with natural ingredients. Also got the quesadilla moreliana which is a crispy quesadilla with carnitas. We love the carnitas at Don Raul. However, I can't afford to return after a $51 breakfast--which included two drinks, a small side of avocado, and one pound of pork. I understand you've opened a restaurant now, but in today's economy, most people simply can't afford $51 for breakfast. The metal chairs are also very uncomfortable--a poor choice. And to make matters worse, they discontinued the cabbage slaw. So sorry, but I won't be back unless someone else is treating me. read more

This place is across the street from the San Antonio Museum of Art. After visiting the museum, I was looking for a place to have a quick bite before I got back on the Hop on Hop Off trolley. Since I am in Texas, I wouldn't have Italian food, which I could have any time in NJ. I don't usually eat pork, and I am very sensitive to the scent/flavor of meat. Its pretty steep for waiting in line and ordering, no server and paper plates. $100 for family of 4 is a little steep for that experience. The food is so good i'm willing to overlook this. Service- 3.5 stars. The line gets long and there is 1 person taking orders, getting drinks so be prepared to wait. The staff is friendly but waiting in line that long is miserable. Ambiance- 4 stars. Both times i've been its packed and the tables are tiny. Authentic mexican vives but They just need a bigger place. Overall, 4.5 stars the food is just so good, even leftovers reheated my torta was spectacular. Even with the long lines and small tables I will continue to be back.
