Was in town for a high school football game and wanted to grab something to eat before we headed back to Dallas area. Looked on yelp to decide and gave my daughter the choice between tacos and chicken sandwiches. Chicken won and we gave Smacks a try. The pictures looked good and the combinations were not anything I would come up with if I was making a sandwich, so I was intrigued. The wife got the smacks, daughter got the buffalo no slaw and I tried the peach. I probably should have picked something else since we were eating in the car on the way home at night. The chicken itself tasted plain but it's everything that went on it that shines. The pickled candy jalapeños was probably my favorite part, nice heat and flavor. For $13 a sandwich with fries may seem steep but with the current prices and the size of what you get it was a steel. On the way down to San Antonio we stopped at Buc-ee's and I got the three meat sandwich for 13.99. Smacks chicken sandwiches dwarfed that overpriced sandwich and you get fries. Daughter eat all of hers and the wife picked at hers since she was driving. It would have been better if we ate there. Instead of the car but we were in a rush to get back home. But that was my fault because I didn't want something we could get at home, I love trying new places. Talked with the guy running the shack and he filled me in on the story of how it started. Explain there use to be a brick and mortar and what happened. So if you look at the pictures it is just the small trailer(hard to see at night plus the trees have grown hiding the sign on the shack. First off. This is just a review. Take it as "constructive criticism". Nobody should be offended by my words as they are only used to describe what i personally thought and felt during my visit. This place is just aight. The food looks better on the Instagram than in actual person. There wasn't enough sauce in my sandwich it tasted bland. The chicken was full of batter and grease. The bread fell apart on its own due to being so moist and soggy from the chicken grease. The samdwich was so greasy i used about 20-25 napkins to wipe my fingers as i ate. If u love grease then this is the sandwich for you. The actual place appeared dirty & dingy (tables, restrooms). There were 2 tiny bugs crawling on our table no big deal i smashed them with my fist and flicked their dead carcasses onto the floor. I have nothing to say about the employees. The service was fine. But if they want to be recognized for customer service they should take a page from the Chik Filet employee training manual. Speaking of Chik Filet, I'm not sure what the hype was about at this joint, but Chik Filet still serves a better chicken sandwich. In conclusion, i'll be fine with never coming again. I was a little disappointed that they did not have the Buffalo Mac n cheese when we visited and I wish we lived close by so that I could go back when they do! I'm not a big food truck connoisseur but this little chicken shack is worth the wait. They are in high demand. They only accept cash and Cash App which is a draw back. I'm old school and always carry a little cash. The shack is a one man operation which can get orders backed up. Like I stated, it's worth the wait. Had a great time trying Smackerel's chicken sandwiches with my bestie and her family! Since she is from out of town, so I wanted her and her family to try local foods made by San Antonio's amazing and talented culinary geniuses. We placed our to-go order for a Nashville Hot sandwich and a Tangy House Special. It was REALLY challenging to choose between the TEN chicken sandwich varieties. Creative offerings like the Cheesy Thai, BBQ Mac & Cheese, The Big Peach are attention grabbers! We were told to pick up our order in 30 mins and arrived right on time. The small parking lot was really full, but we found a spot. We were stopped at the door when we tried to enter to pick up the food - "You can't come in now - we are at capacity!" So clearly they are following the current Covid-19 capacity protocols. Someone took our name and said they were running a bit behind - check back in 10 mins. Unfortunately the order wasn't ready for 30 mins - a full hour after we placed the order. Once we got home and FINALLY started to eat, we were so happy! The seasoned fried chicken was HUGE, and the buns were soft and tasty. The tangy sauce had a yummy bite and covered the whole sandwich. We each had half of each sandwich and both were delicious! Really way too big for one person but that didn't stop us! Each order came with fries - either Salt & Pepper or House Sugar. We liked both flavors. They were crispy outside and tender inside - just right. This place has been a hit since the day they opened and they are working to meet the demand. I was a little worried the taste and quality might suffer from them scaling up in size, but nothing to worry about, Everything was just as good if not better then it always was. I find it hilarious that people wax poetic about chicken sandwiches from places like Popeye's and Chick Fil A when you have places like Smack's and Motel Fried Chicken right here in San Antonio. People of San Antonio - wake up! You have two excellent local eateries creating chicken sandwiches that would rival some of the best creations I have had in the Deep South. Stop eating that chain crap and support your local businesses. And seriously, with the massive appetites I have seen in San Antonio, I can't imagine that anyone could complain about the size of orders at Smack's. The chicken sandwiches are absolutely enormous. One sandwich could easily fill two regular sized people and perhaps 1.5 Texans. The flavors for each sandwich are great - my most recent one had some peach, candied jalapenos, cream cheese, and jam all accentuating the flavors of an enormous fried chicken. Don't like all those flavors? No problem. While most of the fried chicken sandwiches here are superbly eccentric, they have a couple of more traditional flavors for those of you who don't like to take so many chances. Between Smack's and Motel Fried Chicken, I think it really comes down to taste. If you want something different and cool that still tastes absolutely delicious, go to Smack's. Your creative side will appreciate what Chef Keenan is doing here. If you want something that is more like a super upscale version of a Chick Fil A sandwich, then go to Motel Fried Chicken. The only time the cumin flavor didn't overpower it was when we got to the honey part (and that part was great!). After reading some reviews here maybe our lemon pepper sandwiches we're probably the bottom last two of the day. Or y'all love salty food. I was really excited to finally try yall's food !!
