And if you get the chicken, make sure to add on the charro beans because it definitely made the meal even better. This is going to seem more like a rant than anything which I wanted to avoid. I feel like you should judge an establishment on more than just food. The service, ambience, cleanliness, etc.... The food is AMAZING HERE! Been here a couple of times. Just a little inconsistent and the tortillas are bad. The rest is awesome! The burgers are some of the best I've had in town! The chicken and sides are pretty much great! We've had the discada, fajita, etc.... All great. Our gripes are with the service! I'm confused. There are waitresses there, just don't know why? They take your order, bring it. THATS IT! Several times we've had to flag down a waitress, or one time had to get up and tap one on the shoulder. There is a line for tip, so I assume they are waitresses. They look at you like you are bugging them. I'm so sorry but I feel so unwelcome when we come. I've tried other pollo asado places here in San Antonio but this has to be my new favorite. The chicken was flavorful and juicy, the steak fajitas were also juicy and flavorful. They are very generous with portions and gave lots of rice, beans, green sauce, guacamole and salsa. Large charred peppers and onions on top of the chicken and steak fajitas. We were touring the Missions in the area, and hopped on Yelp to find a local restaurant for dinner. Pollos Asados Don Jose didn't have many reviews, but the ones it did have were glowing. The friendly staff handed us the menu... which was surprisingly sparse. No chips, no queso (I don't think there were any dishes with cheese). Most Mexican restaurants seem to have dozens of dishes, combinations, sides and appetizers... yet we've also experienced how quantity does not necessarily equal quality. Also, we usually fill up on frills and appetizers... which have us so full we don't really care that the food wasn't great... but I digress... My husband went with the 1/2lb Carne Asada and I ordered 1/2lb Fajitas, and it was some of the best Mexican food we've ever had! The sizzling fajitas arrived with soft corn tortillas and rice, and each dish came with a delicious sausage and foil-wrapped/grilled onion half. The Carne Asada was tender with a rich home-grilled flavor. The green sauce was so good, we asked for extra to take home! In the end, we didn't miss the appetizers and options one bit.
