The staff is hit or miss and do not really offer an elevated experience and they should at the prices they charge. Today we were in the area and decided to give this spot a try. I've heard a lot of hoopla about Small Cheval and I have to say I wasn't swept off my feet. Service when we arrived was so so as we were the only one in line and it took 3 minutes for someone to come to the register to take our order. After we placed our order we waited 11 minutes for our order and the place wasn't busy. One very good thing was the dining area. Very warm and soothing I'll tell you our order consisted of 2 double cheese burgers , 1 order of fries, and 2 canned waters and tip for a total of $42.37 A bit pricy for the food and service One and done here. The first thing I noticed about this location was all of the parking! Score! The second thing was the nice interior. It was very spacious with lots of seating. It looks like it's outdoors with tons of trees and fun decor. Halfway through our meal, we were surprised to learn the roof retracts! Very cool on a nice day. My sister and I both got the double cheeseburger and fries. Definitely ask for the garlic aioli as it is a game changer. It really elevates both the burger and the fries. I don't usually come to the small Cheval locations, as the am more of a fan of the OG Au Cheval. The don't understand why they open multiple locations of the small, when it doesn't really hold a candle to what you can except from the west loop location. But that aside, I recently stopped here, as it is still a better option than your typical garbage fast food burgers. But I was shocked at how had shrinkflation has hit here! I'd forgotten if the burgers ran the same way as the main restaurant (double being 3 Pattie's, and single being two), so I ordered a single cheeseburger. The bun was larger than the meat! Not only that, but the pickle/dijonaise was laughable. Literally a small drop under the meat, soaking into the meat, with one small thinly sliced pickle. I really feel like I'd ordered a bun with cheese, and a thin slice of deli meat. I am beginning to rethink the whole better than other fast food burger options. Perhaps five guys is a much better option. I think I would have paid the very same amount there, with tons of toppings & a big bag of greasy fries, that would last a second helping. Not having been to Au Cheval yet, it's hard to compare Small Cheval to its predecessor. With that being said, we still tackled Small Cheval. It's a fast casual restaurant with a few items on their menu: cheeseburger, burger, grilled cheese, chicken tenders or chicken sandwich. They also have a smashburger, but why? I ordered the cheeseburger and my wife got the chicken sandwich (on the recommendation of our cashier/server). You can get fries or truffle fries (don't hold me to that, I just don't recall). The fries are large enough for two people. I'm a cheese fry guy. The don't really have cheese fries but you can get a cheese sauce cup on the side. It was okay, nothing spacing. For the chicken tenders/sandwich, they have a bunch of sauces to choose from. My wife had the buffalo sauce and said it was pretty good. As for the burger. It was good. I asked for it medium rare and it was cooked that way. The bun held up so well, that I wish there was less of it. It's very bready (see thick). It was made to order which was nice. It was a good burger overall. The chicken sandwich was delicious! It was a thick, juicy breast lightly fried. And the fried chicken is gluten free. I'm not sure if they have a gluten free bun, but they were proud to tell me the fried chicken is gluten free. They have fountain drinks (just go up and ask for refills). They also serve alcohol, but is a limited list. They even have alcohol to mix in the ice cream. They also have soft serve, shakes, and concrete mixers (like Dairy Queen's blizzards). My wife got a soft serve vanilla cone and I got their banana cream pie concrete mixer. Their soft serve is a mix between DQ and gelato. It's very smooth, creamy, and refreshing. The banana cream pie mixer was really, really good. However, you did have to get through half a small drink size cup to get to the banana cream pie part, but it was good and very filling and easily can be shared. Lastly, the staff was very friendly and helpful giving you their thoughts on what to order. Overall, if you're looking for a good burger, chicken sandwich and some good ice cream, you certainly can't go wrong with Small Cheval. read more

I was raving about Cheval burgers to my mom as she was comparing best burger she had at one of the famous GR chef burgers places in Las Vegas and paid $15 for it. We ordered 3 signature double cheeseburgers 2 golden fries a strawberry shake Diet Coke Hot drip coffee The Cost..yeah you don't want to know for a burger meal. There was plenty of parking so as we were walking towards the entrance of the building, we noticed that they have outdoor patio eating, which is nice to see. As we walked in, we were greeted by people waiting for us to order. The staff was friendly and attentive. When I received my drink, the fountain drink is behind the counter, so I don't know if you can get free refills. The ice are those ice pellets that you can easily chew on like the ones they have at the hospital. They gave us a buzzer and we sat down in a booth when we got our food. Fries were in baskets that came with ketchup and garlic aïoli, and then our burgers were in paper to go containers. The burger was a nice size. It's brioche bun and the burger patties were like smashed burger patties. The flavor was good however I noticed that the buns didn't seem fresh and the patties felt like they were either overcooked. Basically the entire burger was dry. I was pretty shocked because I always talk about how good cheval burgers were. But this time I'm not surprised that my mom was not impressed and for the cost of us spending for high quality burgers it was subpar, sigh. Our Golden fries, they seemed like they were twice cooked and it didn't come out fresh and hot but dry, and too crispy. I'm not quite sure why our meals were all dry because they shouldn't be :( I was seriously hoping to write an awesome review because this location is closer to my house. My husband had his coffee and he said the taste was OK My Diet Coke was fine, but I did like the pellets of ice that I chewed after I finished my drink My mom enjoyed her strawberry shake. I could only manage to eat half, but I liked them. Better than the location in Wicker Park, this one has indoor seating and it's really cute. Feels like you're outside. A simple concept and a simple menu. Burgers done well here. Service is good. I was expecting a good burger and they did not disappoint me. Crafted on a brioche bun, accompanied by lettuce, tomato and their signature dijonaise sauce. I had the single w/ cheese. Excellent. Their french fries are fantastic. Hot and salty without being too salty and a generous portion. I decided on a milkshake instead of pop. I had the strawberry shake and I'll say it's one of the best shakes I have had in years. I wanted to give Small Cheval a shot after seeing so many videos on social media about this amazing burger. I dined in at around 8 PM on a weekday and I was able to order right away. I ordered a cheeseburger with everything and added tomato and lettuce. I also had an order of fries with the white cheese sauce. My boyfriend ordered the same. The dining area was really cute - very aesthetic for fast food. They also have a patio that was pretty inviting. The food came out fast - I was given a double cheeseburger - maybe I needed to specify that I only wanted a single. The meat was also cooked to a perfect medium - bright pink center and honestly the most pink burger I've ever ordered. Not sure if that's how they normally cook them - they didn't ask and I didn't have a problem with it, but if you like a well done patty, surely ask. The burger was flavorful and I enjoyed it. I really liked the Dijonnaise sauce and I thought it added a lot to the burger. My boyfriend opted for no sauce (doesn't like mayo based condiments) and said that it needed a sauce. The fries were good. They were thin, hot and crispy and reminiscent of better Steak and Shake fries. The white cheese sauce was good. Would I say it's one of the best burgers around? This newly opened location is clean, bright, and most of the staff was friendly. Limited menu with burgers, chicken sandwiches, and shakes. There is also a $22 wagyu truffle burger if you're feeling fancy. I ordered a basic cheeseburger. They come with pickles, dijonnaise, and onions. If you want lettuce or tomatoes you have to ask for them. The burger is very good with melted cheddar, a toasted bun, and it's nicely seasoned. The $10.99 price for a double burger isn't bad at all. But then it was $3.49 for a can of water (they're too fancy for bottled water), plus a 3.25% surcharge for the pleasure of using their restaurant. I despise surcharges, just be honest with your prices up front. So now I'm paying nearly $17 for a burger and water. If I'd added fries it would be up there in 5 Guys territory. I understand Au Cheval is supposed to be one of the hottest burgers in the country but I would be perfectly happy to go to one of the many local joints serving up burgers just as good for a fraction of the price. OK, so here's the deal - you like Small Cheval, chances are you'll like your visit here. Food is what you expect, staff is friendly enough, and it is a large, well-lit space with an exposed roof and an outdoors-y vibe. But I am dinging them because their architecture design firm seriously missed the mark with dining accessibility. If you are in a wheelchair, you have no dining option that is equal to a non-disabled person. The exception is warm weather, when you can eat outside where there are regular tables. Inside, you are out of luck. All the booths are raised up on a stair - you cannot transfer into them if you are in a wheelchair. Its baffling, inexplicable, borderline hostile. The other seats are backless stools that line huge circular tables/toadstools that are somewhere between low tops and high tops in height. One can remove certain stools to roll your chair up to the table, but then you have an Alice in Wonderland scenario - the table height is such that you'll feel like a child eating at the dining room table without a booster seat. The inexplicability of this is exacerbated by the fact that the rest of the establishment is a model of accessibility - parking spaces, fully accessible bathroom stall, wide spaces. But, when I dipped them into the garlic aoli sauce, it lessened the salt taste and brought out the garlic flavor of the sauce. Service: 7/10 It wasn't that crowded, but my order of 6 burgers for my group of 6 took 20-30 minutes to arrive. Should've been faster for a fast food place. Before the lockdown, I worked downtown. Once a week, I would treat myself to lunch out. One of the places we would frequent was Small Cheval at 150 N. Riverside. Earlier this week, I was thrilled to find out there is a suburban location in Rosemount. A group of friends went this weekend for dinner. If you are not in the know, Small Cheval is referencing its big sister Au Cheval on Randolph at Halsted just west of the Kennedy Expressway. It was explained to me that Au Cheval in culinary terms is "topped with a fried egg"; Small Cheval does not have the egg option and is more casual. The Rosemount location had a fair option with the interior having brick pavers, umbrellas, and imitation trees. It reminded me of the county fair section of Great America in Gurnee. The food is limited. Burgers, cheeseburgers, fried chicken strips, french fries, milkshakes, and soft serve ice cream. There is a bar for beer, wine, and some cocktails. We ordered a double cheeseburger and a 4-peice chicken tenders. The burgers were excellent, as expected. The soft brioche buttery bun stood up well to the juicy burger. The chicken tenders were hand-breaded and crispy. While we were finishing up an employee approached our table with two ice cream cones on the house (maybe son one made an extra by mistake?), they were appreciated and a nice finish to a casual meal. It was about $15 per person plus beverage. Water is free (there is a tap at the service area with the napkins and cutlery),bottled water, iced tea, or soda is $3 ish. Beer and wine is $5 - $12. Cocktail and frozen signature drinks are $13. We all made note of how nice the bathrooms were - these were luxury hotel level bathrooms. There is a drive-thru if you want to pick up food from home. Everything came in biodegradable containers; the available cutlery was even compostable. At the price point and menu selection there were a lot of families there. Nice booths on the edges, but the majority of tables are large round picnic type tables for multiple people, forcing table sharing. The food menu is very small. The burgers were good but uninspiring. The fries were good and hot. The shakes were advertised as a highlight, but my wife found them to be just ok. I guess this place is a fast burger shop of a famous restaurant called au cheval. We entered and was greeted by the cashier who was super nice and friendly. She answered any question i had. I got a double and fries. Man the burger was really good. Juicy and had a distinct flavor that most burger didn't have. You can tell the patties were a cut above. The fries were golden with a nice crisp on the outside with a cloud pillow like texture on the inside. And make sure you get extra garlic aioli! That sauce just takes the fries to the next level! This was our second visit to this location. We previously visited soon after they opened. This time the drive-thru was not in service and it was packed as ever. Luckily the patio is open and there is online pickup. We weren't able to order fries or chicken sandwich online for some reason but our burgers and shake were still good. Supposed to be one of the five best burger places in Chicago but my first bite almost made me sick to my stomach! Dejonanais dressing. Dejon mustard with mayonnaise and white pepper! Really WHITE PEPPER?????? I almost threw up! I forced myself to eat it and the greasy top bun made it worse. I will never go back to Small Cheval ever again!
